A morphological analysis of loanwords in Russian

Konya, Ilon Julianna January 1966 (has links)
A language is so constructed that the speaker is able to draw out of its resources whatever he wishes to communicate, yet whenever cultural borrowing occurs he cannot altogether avoid borrowing the words which are associated with it. Russian written records indicate that the language has been exposed to numerous foreign influences from very early times. With the intense introduction of "Westernization" since the sixteenth-century both English and French have had a considerable influence on Russian and especially in the twentieth-century this has even increased. For the purpose of this study, therefore, the writer has chosen to analyse English and French loanwords that are found in use in present-day Russian; examples from other languages, especially German, will be given occasionally insofar as they support the arguments presented. This thesis attempts an overall description of the morphological assimilation of loanwords. Phonological analysis and discussion of the socio-cultural context is given consideration in order to enable the reader and the analyst to see this paper as a whole. It was necessary to abstract linguistic elements at different levels of analysis so that some problems that are not explainable at the morphological level, would not be left unsolved. To some extent future borrowings into the Russian language in connection with cultural borrowing may be predicted. The pronounciation of a loanword depends on the degree of assimilation and whether or not the speaker is aware of the fact that it is a borrowing or wants to alert the listener as well. On the whole, loanwords are subject to phonological as well as morphological adjustments. Loanwords are sometimes under the pressure of both the native and foreign morphological systems, which in turn causes fluctuation of forms. Important external factors in the assimilation of loanwords at both levels are the audio and visual means of communication involved in transferring a loanword from either English or French into Russian. An interesting feature for future investigation is the analysis of loanwords on the lexical level and the correlation of lexical patterning with morphology in the process of loanword assimilation. / Arts, Faculty of / Central Eastern Northern European Studies, Department of / Graduate

Slovotvorný proces tronkace a jeho prezentace a uchopení v učebnicích francouzštiny na úrovni B1 / Word forming process of clipping and its presentation and comprehension in French textbooks at B1 level

Niedermaierová, Tereza January 2020 (has links)
Word forming process of clipping and its presentation and comprehension in French textbooks at B1 level This diploma thesis focuses on the word formation process of clipping and its presentation and seizing in French textbooks at the B1 level. The theoretical part of the work aims to describe the clipping in the context of other word forming processes and to provide basic information about this process based on the study of professional publications. This part of the work defines clipping and presents the basic typology (apocope and apheresis). Based on specific examples, the thesis describes the morphological and phonetic attributes of clipping, and also mentions specific forms of words associated with this process, such as lexical amalgams. In addition, the theoretical part mentions the words classes usually affected by clipping, the question of grammatical categories or the concept of clipping in the Czech language. The aim of the practical part is to analyse the occurence of the process of clipping in teaching at high schools, using three contemporary French textbooks at the B1 level according to CEFR. The presence or absence of the clipping process in the teaching is also analysed via questionnaire research in selected years of high school. The thesis is based on the assumption that the...

Kategorie singulativu v ukrajinském jazyce / The category of singulative in the Ukrainian language

Struk, Lina January 2021 (has links)
In this thesis we focus on singulatives, which, according to S. Bevzenko, are most common in the Ukrainian language. In the study, we analyzed many meanings of the term singulative from different linguists and chose version of V. Musatov, which, in our opinion, is the most accurate. The theoretical part is dedicated to general information about singulatives, their presence and meaning in Slavic languages as well as classifications, by which researchers divide these nouns. The general stylistic characteristic of singulatives in Russian, where these nouns are investigated in more detail, is also presented in this part. In the practical part with the use of Hrinchenko's "Dictionary of the Ukrainian Language" (1907 - 1909), "Dictionary of the Ukrainian language" in eleven volumes (1970 - 1980) and the academic "Great explanatory dictionary of Modern Ukrainian language" (2009) we research singulatives in the Ukrainian language, including changing or preserving their lexical meanings and stylistic markings during 1909 - 2009, as well as their use in fiction and folklore. Key words: singulative, the Ukrainian language, word formation, noun, connotation

Los compuestos verbonominales en español: ¿sustantivos o adjetivos?

Tabares Plasencia, Encarnación, Rodríguez, José Juan Batista 02 August 2022 (has links)
In this paper we refuse the generalized idea within linguists working on Spanish word formation that compounds with a verbal element in Spanish language are nouns. Based on different criteria (morphological, syntactic and semantic) and attending the evolution of Spanish language, we like to show in contrast that these formations are adjectives.

Neologie v současné francouzské slovní zásobě / Neology in Contemporary French Lexicon

Hánková, Anna January 2017 (has links)
The present thesis deals with the study of neology and neologisms in contemporary French. The theoretical part defines the concepts of neology and neologism, word-formation processes in general and specific word-formation processes classified as formal neology, semantic neology and borrowings. The empirical part describes the formation of the corpus created for the purposes of the thesis, which is based on texts selected form current French press (the daily broadsheet Le Monde and the weekly tabloid Voici). The core section of the thesis presents samples and analyses of individual word-formation processes which appeared in the author's corpus. The data are accompanied by a basic statistical analysis of the relative proportions of individual word-formation processes. The research shows that borrowings, especially those from English, represent the most frequent word-formation process in both newspapers. Borrowings constituted nearly a half of all identified neologisms (45%) in Voici and nearly one third of the neologisms (28%) in Le Monde. KEYWORDS Neology, neologism, language registers, official word formation, word-formation processes, French press, Le Monde, Voici

Étude des relations entre productivité et polysémie dans les processus de formation de mots : le cas de l’espagnol

Licheri, Alejandro 04 1900 (has links)
This thesis deals with the process of word formation. We assume that productivity and polysemy are guiding the speakers in the way they create words. To confirm this assumption, we have studied the list of Spanish words with suffixes included in the “Diccionario de los sufijos de la lengua española (DISULE)” by Silvia Faitelson-Weiser (2010, cf. www.sufijos.lli.ulaval.ca ). We have evaluated the levels of productivity and polysemy of each segment identified as a suffix. We have then correlated the values thus reached for each feature. In this approach, which we have fully tested, the morpheme is recognized as a unit of analysis in line with the grammatical model Item and arrangement (Hockett, 1954). Even though our analysis did not enable us to find strong correlations between the two variables for all suffixes, when we define specific contexts of competition, we see that the relations between productivity and polysemy are following specific patterns. We also notice that the chosen pattern is more effective to describe polysemy than to explain productivity. We are thus led to question how relevant the opposition between word and morpheme, as units of analysis, really is. Our study focuses on these two notions of morphology.

[en] POLYSEMY AND PRODUCTIVITY IN WORD FORMATION: A STUDY OF THE PREFIX RE- IN CONTEMPORARY PORTUGUESE / [pt] POLISSEMIA E PRODUTIVIDADE NAS CONSTRUÇÕES LEXICAIS: UM ESTUDO DO PREFIXO RE- NO PORTUGUÊS CONTEMPORÂNEO

FERNANDO GIL COUTINHO DE ANDRADE 12 September 2006 (has links)
[en] This work investigates the meanings of the prefix re- as a morphological element used in verb formation in Brazilian Portuguese. It concentrates on the question of lexical productivity and its relation to the polysemic and/ or multifunctional aspect of word formation. Initially, we analyse several approaches to word formation by prefixation in Portuguese, examining the precepts of traditional grammar, the point of view of the structuralists and the generative view on the phenomenon. Then we present and discuss different descriptive proposals for the prefix re- in Portuguese. Next, we discuss the complex notion of productivity in lexical theory and introduce the question of polysemy in lexical constructions and its relevance in determining specific processes in word formation. Having in mind the theoretical issues brought into our previous discussion, we then analyse the relation between productivity and polysemy in the Word Formation Rule of re- addition in Portuguese verb formation. The analysis is based on corpora consisting both of contemporary written newspaper language and of standard spoken language (NURC data) of about the same length. Our results reveal the polysemic nature of the prefix re- in contemporary Portuguese and point to the precariousness of current descriptions which focus on the notion of repetition as being the sole productive semantic contribution of the prefix re- in verb formation. Furthermore, the research shows that it is possible to predict the meaning(s) of a re- + V formation on the basis of the semantic properties of the basic verb. This strongly supports the hypothesis that the multiplicity of meanings of the prefix re- does not constitute a case of random or incidental polysemy, but rather accounts for a phenomenon generated by a convergence of meanings which leads towards a functional direction in word formation by prefixation.

Aspectos sincrônicos e diacrônicos do sufixo -ístico(a) no português e no galego / Synchronic and diachronic aspects of the suffix -ístico(a) in Portuguese Language and in Galician Language

Garcia, Nilsa Arean 13 February 2012 (has links)
The present work, a result of researches carried out by the GHMP (GMHP in Portuguese) - Group of Historical Morphology of the Portuguese Language - aims at studying both the synchronic and diachronic aspects of the suffix -ístico(a), as well as its existing relations with its evolution -ística and with the suffixes -ismo and -ista in Portuguese and Galician, in order to justify its morphological change from a deverbal to a denominal nature, its further semantic changes as well as the languages responsible for its dissemination. For such, by making use of the method evolved by the group and with lexicographical, historiographical, not to mention literary and journalistic corpora, initially we aim by means of the elaboration of a general prospection, to establish the initial period of functioning of the suffix besides observing how it is understood by the present linguistic works in the two languages under study. Then, its Greco-Latin genesis and subsequently its functioning in other languages are analyzed as well as its syntagmatic and paradigmatic relations with the other suffixes involved in order to establish an evolution throughout the centuries by means of the elaboration of functional-semantic classifications of each period under study, as well as to assess the importance of languages of culture and of processes of translations in the dissemination of the suffixes in question. Thus, with the construction of a glossary of dating and sample sentences of formations with -ística, the evolution of -ístico(a), the great importance of the German language, unlike the French language, in the diffusion of the suffix can be observed. Finally, with the analysis of the productivity of -ístico(a) in Portuguese, it can be demonstrated that a suffix is not only possessed by both a semantic and functional meaning, but is also constituted by various other nuances, among which the ones that characterize the textual gender in which it functions.
