An in-depth, longitudinal, qualitative study exploring the decision- making processes of dual-earner couples in incidents of work-family conflict

Radcliffe, Laura Suzanne January 2012 (has links)
This study employs qualitative diaries and in-depth interviews with dual-earner couples in order to investigate how the demands of work and family responsibilities are negotiated on a daily basis. The methods used are novel in that in-depth interviews were conducted initially with both members of the couple present, and subsequently with each individual separately. Diaries were also completed by each individual privately, as a means of eliciting their experiences of decision-making in a real-time basis. It is argued that the use of such in-depth qualitative analysis enabled new and important findings to emerge, including distinguishing between different types of decision-making, uncovering important new decision-making cues, and gaining a greater insight into those cues previously acknowledged. The findings also demonstrate how these cues have an impact on decision-making in the context of both parties in the couple. In using both couples and individuals as levels of analysis it is possible to identify how this interdependence is manifested whilst also allowing for the discovery of important strategies used by the couples on a daily basis to resolve work-family conflicts. Balancing work and family is shown to be a continuous work in progress and the methodology used here allowed the daily dynamics of that work in progress to be revealed.

Being a unit manager and a parent - a balancing act : A qualitative interview study about male and female unit managers experiences of work-family conflict

Svensson, Elin, Karlström, Lisen January 2020 (has links)

Exploring Work-Family Guilt: Mothers vs. Fathers and Its Influence on Parenting Practices

LaGraff, Melissa R 12 April 2019 (has links)
One emotion experienced by working parents is guilt, yet this emotion is not often studied within the work-family domain. This presentation will serve to define work-family guilt drawing from empirical and qualitative research on the construct. This presentation will also delineate findings related to work-family guilt for mothers and fathers. Lastly, this presentation will highlight the scarce research into the relationship between work-family guilt and parenting outcomes. It has been suggested by scholars that work-family guilt may influence parenting behaviors which could cause negative consequences for children. This presentation will review two studies examining work-family guilt and parenting practices.

Isomorphism as a Paradigm for Examining Self-Managed Work Teams and Work Spillover

Cyphers, Amy E. (Amy Elizabeth) 12 1900 (has links)
This study investigates the effects of a participative-type management approach termed self-managed work teams (SMWTs) and work spillover into the family environment. The perspective of isomorphism by Aldous (1969), and Rapoport and Rapoport (1965), was used as a paradigm to examine both positive and negative effects of the work-family relationship. A total of 76 employees from the Department of Defense's Quality Division was used in the regression analysis, due to recent transitions into SMWTs. Results reported overwhelming support for the perspective of isomorphism: over 40% of the variation in positive work spillover was explained by SWMT characteristics. Communication with other teams was the single most important factor found to have a significant effect on positive work spillover.

Dahl, Emma, Johansson, Elina January 2020 (has links)
Teleworking is a fastly developing field, but the teacher profession has not been among thosein the forefront. Due to the Coronavirus pandemic several professions, including universityteachers, have been forced into telework in order to decrease infection rates of Covid-19. Thisstudy analyzes how forced telework affects the experience of a changed work situation. Theaim is to examine how, due to the pandemic, forced telework have affected universityteachers’ experience of their work situation and work/family balance. Six qualitativeinterviews are analyzed through themes of room for action, work load, workplace support andwork/family balance by using the Command -control(-support)model and Work/FamilyBorder Theory. Level of responsibility, authority and previous technical abilities and digitalexperience are shown to be important aspects in relation to dealing with the changed workingenvironment. The balance between work and family/private life is experienced differently butyoung children and availability are two aspects which makes boundary-making harder nowcompared to before the switch to teleworking.

Lopez, André, Persson, Emelie January 2022 (has links)
Samtliga beräkningar gjordes i Excel Version 2021.

On the theory of life balance: The relation to subjective well-being and the role of self-regulation

Gröpel, Peter 25 October 2005 (has links)
The purpose of this work was to investigate basic personality mechanisms underlying life balance, to specify why life balance is beneficial for peoples well-being, and to identify specific self-regulatory competences that affect that balance. The approach of life balance was initially conceived of in terms of the work-family balance or the work-family conflict. Addressing the suggestion that the work-life system is multi- and not just two dimensional, life balance as a multidimensional construct was operationalized and investigated in the present research. Life balance was defined in terms of appropriate proportion of time spent in major life domains that comprises of activities related to work, social contact and family, health, and the overall meaningfulness of life. Two life balance measurements - the Life-Balance Checklist and the Life-Balance Questionnaire - were constructed as a part of this research. Both measures were found to have sufficient internal and external validity. The main findings were: (a) the congruence of needs, goals and goal attainment within the time invested in goal-relevant behavior predicted the level of life balance and may be viewed as a mechanism underlying life balance; (b) the fulfillment of psychological needs mediated the relationship between life balance and subjective well-being; (c) affective coping (i.e., action orientation) buffered the negative impact of stress on life balance; (d) time management behavior was found to have a positive impact on life balance through improved perception of control over time and reduced procrastination; and (e) persons especially skilled in self-motivation and self-relaxation reported to high competence to choose and attain self-concordant goals (i.e., self-determination) and, as a result, to balance their time spent across life domains more effectively.

Police officer on external duty, a work or a lifestyle?

Pettersson, Ludwig, Humling, Albin January 2023 (has links)
The purpose of the study was to investigate the experience of work-life balance (WLB) for police officers on external duty. The method used was an inductive thematic analysis and the material was collected through 10 semi-structured interviews with police officers who worked as police officers in external service. The results generated three main themes: Managing thoughts and feelings, Police as identity and Perceived success factors. The result showed that WLB could be experienced by several factors. This included, among other things, extraordinary tasks such as handling deadly outcomes and working in unpleasant environments. The result of the study refer to the experience of work-family conflict and family-work conflict. The result showed that the profession entailed an experience of identifying oneself as a police officer and that it rather became a lifestyle more than a profession where life sometimes had to be adapted because of the profession. This led to the conclusion that it was perceived to be challenging for police officers on external duty to achieve a good WLB.
