Bus trip to Joni: the story of undocumented Malawian migrants’ journeys to JohannesburgChiumia, Sintha Cynthia January 2016 (has links)
Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Art in Journalism and Media Studies, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, 2016 / This is a story of undocumented migrants’ journeys between Malawi and Johannesburg,
exposing the challenges they face and the corruption that takes place along the borders.
Modern migration between the two countries has taken place for close to two hundred years.
In the past, migrants, most of whom worked in the mines, were protected by law and that
eased their movements. These days, low skilled migrants do not qualify for work permits so
they stay in the country illegally. The South African law qualifies such migrants as
undesirable visitors and bans them from returning to the country for some time. This research
project documents how such migrants return home and come back to South Africa even
before their bans expire. The research exposes how the migrants are aided by corrupt officers
at the borders. The story shows how some of the migrants utilised a weakness in the old
Malawi identification and passport system to obtain new travel documents under false names
and return to South Africa undetected.
This research project adopted an ethnographic approach. The findings are presented in a
longform narrative story, which forms the first part of this document. The story is
accompanied by a method document, which provides the theoretical framework and explains
the methodology. / GR2017

O educar-se das classes populares oitocentistas no Rio de Janeiro entre a escolarização e a experiência / The auto-education from nineteenth-century popular classes in Rio de Janeiro between schooling and experience.Costa, Ana Luiza Jesus da 29 February 2012 (has links)
The main objective of this thesis was to enumerate and make a comprehensive analyzes of the educational experiences of the popular classes in the court/federal capital and province/state of Rio de Janeiro during the second half of the nineteenth-century and the first years of the twentieth-century assuming the active role of the popular classes in their own education. Such experiences were learned from three historical events: the workers associations; the workers press; and the movements for education leaded by householders in the suburban and rural parish of the court and the province of Rio de Janeiro. In these groups we were able to identify what we have called auto-education of the popular classes of the nineteenth-century and its educational representations. Analyzes of the statutes and reports from the workers associations and the resolutions from the imperial Council recommending or not its approval, the newspapers produced by workers and the petitions demanding from the imperial state the opening and reopening of schools allowed us to reaffirm the importance of the struggles of the popular classes, since at least the second half of the nineteenth-century, to transform the status of the education offered to the popular classes from a gift to a right.

This research takes as its starting point the recent history of the struggle for Agrarian Reform in Brazil: a social history of stubbornness, as expressed in the organizational forms of the Landless Rural Workers Movement (MST), since the early 1980s. Understanding the MST as a result of social struggles against dictatorship, the legacy of the history of peasant movements and pedagogy in an act of liberation theology, this work examines the historical oddities in the context of intense social conflict, marked by the violence of landlordism and State. In this case, the study examines, from the sources, one particular violence against children, when the camp of the agrarian reform claims for a new territory of social struggle. This study concentrates its focus of analysis in the history of children from SEM TERRINHA movement (landless children), due to the construction of a collective identity. To this end, the printed sources are studied in their formative dimension, with emphasis on the arguments of the struggle for printing with a reference to the singular dimension of these childrenâs childhood in SEM TERRINHA Journal and Magazine. Here, we highlight the practices of distributing books and reading in the educational spaces of social struggle of SEM TERRINHA children, namely, the Schools of Rural Education, the Meetings, the Congresses, the Journeys of struggle and the Kidsâ Riddles.
