An Analysis of Undergraduate Creative Writing Students'Writing Processes: Gauging the Workshop Models' Effectiveness Through the Lens of Genre Theories

Chrisman, John 01 January 2015 (has links)
Current approaches to teaching creative writers the ways to success in creative writing courses consist largely of workshop style classes. While workshops often vary from class to class in style, generally a workshop will consist of a group of writers, led by a mentor/instructor, who exchange drafts and provide reader and writer focused feedback to the author. Yet because the workshop approach has not been the subject of close empirical study, it is unclear whether it is an effective pedagogy. This thesis serves two purposes. First, it presents an argument for new research into creative writing pedagogy and creative writers' processes and suggests that any future research should take an empirical turn. However, because creative writing has developed few theories or methods useful for the empirical study of creative writing, I suggest adopting theories and methods from the field of rhetoric and composition. The second part of this thesis is an empirical study of three creative writing undergraduate students in an introductory creative writing course over one semester. This study uses qualitative methods: semi-structured retrospective interviews, close textual analysis, and in-class observations to understand how creative writers are enculturated into the creative writing community using Christine Tardy's theories of acquiring genre expertise as a framework for analysis. Based on this research this study concludes that while creative writers enculturate in different ways, based on several factors, all creative writers develop greater awareness of genre complexity, authorial identity, and intermodal influences on their writing. Furthermore, this study recommends further case studies into creative writers writing processes and the effectiveness of various workshop models on student enculturation. ?

Optimization of the organization of air exchange of lead-smelting production

В., Kozyrin, K. V. January 2019 (has links)
The focus of the research is on the problem of ventilation on lead-melting production. The main sources of lead emissions in the refining shop are determined. The primary conditions for convective jet saving for its further removal and cleaning are defined. With COMSOL Multiphysics simulation platform the shop model is created for fluid flow analysis. The results of numerical calculation of air exchange scheme and its comparing with experimental data are shown. An own scheme of air distribution in refining shop is offered. The scheme takes into account all the requirements for saving of convective circulation, initiated by convective jets from melting pots.

Junca, Emily 12 1900 (has links)
Since the 1920s, the discourses of menstrual product advertisements have been punctuated by stigmatizing norms. These norms are part of a paradoxical and contradictory system. Thus, Josefin Persdotter proposes the use of the neologism menstrunormativity, in order to depict this system that differentiates good menstruation from bad. In the 1960s, various artists and feminist activists appropriated menstrual discourses in order to question the norms found therein. During the 2010s, a menstrual and artistic revolution emerged on the Instagram platform and tended to transgress menstrunormativity, particularly through illustration. On Instagram, menstrual brands reappropriate feminist discourses and share the work of illustrators while reiterating menstrunormativity through the diffusion of contradictory norms. This research highlights the complex encounter between feminist artists and menstrual brands on social media. These artists participate in the deconstruction of norms, while taking part in the paradox composing the Instagram accounts of these brands. Throughout this research, I imagined and then organized a creative workshop with a feminist illustrator, creating primarily around menstruation. This workshop offered the artist a space to reflect around the topics addressed by this research, while illustrating how she perceived menstrual art/illustration in the advertising context. This dissertation aims to participate in critical menstruation studies by exploring the strategies mobilized by menstrual artists to subvert menstrunormativity.

Bridging Business and Design : A Business Thinking and DesignOps Centralization Approach

Jakobsson, Petter January 2020 (has links)
Creating and communicating the business value of design is a complex task. This case study set out to bridge the fields of business and design by investigating how design consultants can communicate the value of design to their clients. More specifically, the study investigates (1) how desirability can be linked to viability by using Strategy Maps and Conditional Statements, (2) how to quantify design output by calculating Return on Investment of Retention and (3) how to verbally and visually communicate design through relevant terminology and communication techniques. To do this, a Business Thinking approach was applied. A first research phase consisting of 12 interviews were conducted, focusing on understanding the work environment of design consultants at the digital consultancy firm Futurice and how they collaborate with their current project clients. The results were used as a blueprint for the second research phase, consisting of one-on-one co-creation workshop sessions between design consultants and their current clients. The sessions were evaluated in Business Thinking experiments and interviews. Physical co-creation canvases were implemented and used in the workshops. The experiments demonstrate that tools and methods inherited from Business Design and Business Thinking can be integrated without disrupting the existing DesignOps at Futurice. Further, the results indicate that the Business Thinking approach can be applied both to the design process of individual design consultants and into DesignOps management, which encourages application beyond the case of Futurice. To what extent is profoundly dependent on the design maturity of the individual designer and the organization. This is assessed and discussed based on the Design Ladder. Fysiska a co-creation kanvaser implementerades och användes i samtliga workshops.

City scoop

Molodij, Anna January 2020 (has links)
This project is speculation in search of possibilities and rethinking the potential of Gamla Stan. Society is continually changing, as are the cities that we live in. The old town is mainly a residential area, but also a “living, pedestrian-friendly museum”. This is a place out of time and frozen in its form, a certain sensitivity is required when thinking about such a fragile context. However, the urban structure is not a fixed entity, but a dynamic and evolving one. By gentle carving in the existing city fabric, the aim is to re-introduce a workshop space in a contemporary manner. The idea is tested on the block of Cassiopea, where its building components get interconnected to make a continuous interior. The new space is about forgetting about the hyper-productivity mindset, with an intention to promote aesthetic pleasure and a slow pace of life. This collective and multifunctional space is a representation of artistic expression, a city atelier for making craft using technology. A space for artists, makers, and education, visible to the public.
