The Effects of Workshop Training and Coaching on the Acquisition and Generalization of Teaching Skills

Almon, Holly C. 12 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study was threefold: (a) to examine the separate effects of increased accuracy on multiple-choice/rank-order written tests and coaching on the teaching performance of participants; (b) to compare generalization across tasks produced by the workshop and coaching; and (c) to assess maintenance of teaching performance. Following baseline, two adults received a lecture on discrete trial teaching procedures. A written test measured verbal performance on workshop material periodically throughout this phase. During the next phase, each adult then experienced further training via in-situ coaching. A multiple baseline design across tasks was used during the coaching phase. Results of the workshop training package revealed an inverse relationship between the strongest verbal performance and strongest teaching performance skill areas. In addition, only with the introduction of the in-situ coaching package did teacher performance improve significantly across all behaviors. Child responding remained relatively constant throughout the study, regardless of teacher performance. Some generalization of teacher behavior was observed across tasks, but was extremely variable across both workshop and coaching conditions. After the cessation of coaching, teacher performance remained stable across maintenance phases and at a 6-week follow-up.

Separation of Transition and Heavy Metals Using Stationary Phase Gradients and Chelation Thin Layer Chromatography / Evaluation of the Effectiveness of POGIL-PCL Workshops

Stegall, Stacy L 01 January 2017 (has links)
Gradient surfaces exhibit a variation in functionality along the length of the surface. One method for preparing gradients is controlled-rate infusion (CRI). In Part 1 of this work, CRI was used to prepare gradients for the purpose of separating transition and heavy metals. Initial work on this project was focused on controlling the retention of the metal ions by varying the number of amine groups, aminoalkoxysilane concentration, and the infusion time. The retention factors of four metal ions varied predictably with increasing number of amine groups, increasing aminoalkoxysilane concentration, and increasing infusion time, producing small but useful changes in the retention factors. The continuation of this project involved the preparation of two-dimensional multi-component gradients on TLC plates, which were used to separate six transition and heavy metals. The retention, and thus the separation, was affected by the presence or absence of a gradient and the direction of the gradient. Part 2 of this work focused on understanding the factors that motivated instructors in the early and late stages in the process of change. Instructors who attended the POGIL-PCL (Process-Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning in the Physical Chemistry Laboratory) workshops were asked to complete online surveys. The goals of the first survey were to understand the factors that initially interested instructors in POGIL-PCL, to determine if instructors enter the implementation stage, and to understand the factors that affect how instructors implement POGIL-PCL. Later surveys were designed to explore the development of the POGIL-PCL network and assess whether implementation is sustained over time.

Supporting a non-modular professional doctorate

Frame, Charles Ian January 2013 (has links)
Purpose: This research considers the design and operation of a non-modular professional doctorate to meet the needs of professionals working in the built environment who wish to obtain a doctoral qualification. It seeks to identify the essential components and support mechanisms to provide an alternative to other forms of doctorate which draws on their strengths while addressing some of their shortcomings. It answers questions regarding the suitability of a programme which can successfully operate within a reasonable timeframe. Research Design: The research is set in a real-life phenomenological paradigm concerning the experience and development of candidates registered for a professional doctorate. The conceptual framework governed both the design of the research and the design of a two-stage curriculum. Regular intervention and evaluation using action research methodology was used to improve practice. The research produced findings through multiple sources of evidence. Data were collected from course documentation, online discussion forums, focus groups, individual reflections and interviews. Findings: The work found that a community of practice consisting of candidates and staff, specifically focused on learning and the continuous development of candidates, provides a suitable vehicle for professional doctorate work. Candidates benefit from engaging in carefully constructed summative and formative assessment with prompt feedback. The assessment informed regular workshops containing an active learning format supplemented through additional support from a virtual learning environment. Crucially, all three components are required to support each other by drawing on their individual strengths. Conclusion: This action research project made a modest but significant contribution to curriculum development at doctoral level. The research developed a model which enabled academic practice to help candidates improve their professional practice. Self-motivated candidates with appropriate supervisory support can complete a professional doctorate within a realistic timeframe when there is carefully constructed synergy between their doctorate, its supporting mechanisms and their own professional practice.

The Separation of Rehabilitation from Production Costs in the Vocational Rehabilitation Workshop

Houston, William Stanley, 1936- 08 1900 (has links)
The problem with which this study is concerned is the separation of rehabilitation from production costs in vocational rehabilitation workshops. Within workshops there are those functions and tasks—testing, counseling, and the administration thereof—which clearly are rehabilitative. The costs of these activities, therefore, are solely rehabilitation costs. In the production area of workshop operations, however, where production and rehabilitation efforts are intertwined, two kinds of costs are incurred simultaneously: (l) rehabilitation or training costs and (2) production costs. As yet, no generally accepted procedures exist for separating these joint costs.

Managing diversity and attitude change in a South African food-processing company

Friedman, Michelle 03 November 2006 (has links)
Faculty of Humanities, School of Education, Master of Education research report. / This is a retrospective case study of an intervention aimed at transforming communication and interpersonal relations in a small company in South Africa. The objective was for the Innergize consultancy to integrate black factory workers and white office staff across race and class into one team by healing the psychological effects of Apartheid. The research questioned how change would be recognised and if it could be sustained within an organisation. The workshop method used by Innergize separated the two groups so that conflict within the groups could be resolved, personal growth facilitated and attitudes towards race surfaced. Then the staff joined together and continued the process through communication, cultural exchange and gender awareness. The staff developed on a personal level, interpersonally, and a climate of trust resulted. The success was partly due to individual attention given to each person, clearing the past before addressing the present, and offering tools for sustaining the process. Structures were set up to sustain changes at the organisational level, however the project ended abruptly, due to a number of factors. The study concluded that in order for a transformation process to be successful at both interpersonal and organisational levels, management must remain committed to a longterm process. Keywords: managing diversity; attitudes; healing; race; organisational change; personal growth; South Africa; workshops; communication.

Entre o desejo e o medo: oficinas de trabalho como espaço de reflexão e empoderamento de adolescentes / Between desire and fear: workshops as a space for reflection and empowerment of adolescents

Amaral, Marta Araujo 21 March 2005 (has links)
This study is part of a plan in the sexual education area involving adolescents, who are part of the Querubins Project in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais. Among the problems presented by the participants, sexual initiation has stood out as an important concern in their lives, reflecting not only the present moment, but also the future, besides being related to several questions in the social and familiar level, as well as the gender one. Our aim is to understand the adolescents social representations related to sexual initiation and their interface with the feminine identity formation and the future plans. In addition to those, this survey aims at analyzing the Workshop as an emancipating strategy for adolescents groups, considering as the starting points the presuppositions of participation, shared responsibility, self-esteem and empowerment. Sixteen female adolescents between 11 and 16 years old took part in this survey. They were divided into 3 (three) different groups according to their age. The data were collected in 4 (four) Workshops and analyzed on the basis of the social representation theory by means of the discourse analysis and association of ideas techniques. The understanding of the social representations made the values, ideas and practices of the adolescents and their family clear. It was also clear that those values, ideas and practices were in frequent transformation in the social field. The analysis of the gender questions was essential for the understanding of the construction processes of the feminine identity and its influence on the affective relationships, on the exercise of sexuality and on the future plans. The Workshop as a technique of data colleting and as an educative practice was considered efficient and very close to this age group public, being also considered as a space for participants reflection, expression and transformation.

Oficinas intergeracionais: saberes e fazeres da experiência, mediação cultural e significação / Intergenerational Workshops: knowledge and practices of experience, cultural mediation and significance.

Paiva, Simone Borges 12 June 2015 (has links)
O encontro da saberes e fazeres intergeracionais, somados à articulação de saberes e fazeres científicos, profissionais e da experiência pode constituir-se em caminho para a instauração de novas e promissoras relações entre informação e significação, preservando e valorizando processos de apropriação e criação de conhecimento e cultura na \"era da informação\" / This thesis reaffirms the importance of intergenerational exchange of experiences in the qualification of construction processes of knowledge and culture, in contemporaneity, based on the development of an educational and cultural mechanism - the Intergenerational Workshop - in an institution that assists children and youths in the community of Paraisópolis, located in the southern region of São Paulo. The research was based upon the assumptions of the collaborative methodology, where the subjects are understood and treated as creators of knowledge and culture that act in association with the researcher, building actions together around the common object of the intergenerational exchanges. By promoting the interruption in the usual daily flows of members of different age groups of the Paraisópolis community and of the PECP (Einstein Program in the Paraisópolis Community), Intergenerational Workshops promoted and allowed the emergence and the recreation of a stream of knowledge and practices that constitute, give support, confer, reconstruct identities, signs and relational and cultural practices. In other words, the meeting of the intergenerational knowledge and practices, added to the articulation of scientific, professional and experienced knowledge and doings, can be the way for the introduction of new and promising relationships between information and signification, preserving and valuing creative processes of knowledge and culture in the \"information age\".
