Liliputtar, strippor och exotiska stammar : En studie över mänskliga attraktioner på tivoli Gröna Lund under 1900-talet

This paper discuses three different freakshow-attractions at the amusement park Gröna Lund in Stockholm during the 20th century; two tribes from the African continent, the exhibit of people with dwarfism and all female striptease. These attractions have been examined with international and intersectional perspective aswell as their effect on the possible heritage status of the amusement park Gröna Lund and their part in creating a so-called dissonant heritage. The thesis does not examine individual freaks or the amusement often refereed to as burlesque that also was an important part of the amusement park Gröna Lund. By studying the amusement park Gröna Lund’s company archive at the Centre for business history in Stockholm I found the main source material for this thesis. This material consisted of pictures, commercial flyers given out at exhibitions, advertising banners and articles from various Swedish newspapers. The material has then been exposed to both textual and image analysis. The result is that the human attractions at Gröna Lund can, and should, be seen as a part of an international freakshow market - although influenced by social and political trends and institutions. I also argue that the amusement park, and the human attractions are a part of a dissonant heritage, a more intersectional Swedish heritage. This is a two years master’s thesis in Archive, Library and Museum studies.

O presente estudo propõe-se a analisar pavilhões expositivos nacionais na Exposição Mundial ocorrida em 2015, na cidade de Milão (Itália). Faz uma leitura geral dos pavilhões da Expo 2015 e se atém a quatro pavilhões nacionais representativos da diversidade arquitetônica presente no evento: Áustria, Holanda, Emirados Árabes e Brasil. Pretende responder a questão central da pesquisa: existe ainda espaço, atualmente, para a investigação arquitetônica nesses eventos? Sua metodologia baseia-se em pesquisa de campo, pesquisa em fontes primárias diversas e pesquisa bibliográfica referente a cada um dos casos analisados e ao contexto histórico do evento. / This current research aims to analise national pavilions, focused on the World Exhibition that took place in Milan (Italy), in 2015. It gives a general reading of the Expo 2015 pavilions and keeps to four national pavilions that represent the diversity found in the event: Austria, the Netherlands, United Arab Emirates and Brazil. The intention is to answer to the main question of the research: Is there still space for experimental architecture at this kind of event? It\'s methodology is based on field research, primary sources, and bibliographic research related to each of the four pavilions and to the historical context of the event.

Combining imperial, national and local scales, these 'Old cities' exploit several dynamics. First, these historic entertainments resulted from the restructuring of the Western and Central European empires. Indeed, the permanent injunction of national questions - here Czech and Hungarian - into the Austro-Hungarian empire and the expansion with a universalist aim of the French empire interfered within the construction of the 'Old cities' and their educational vocations. However, these imperial and global dimensions came into reaction with national and local scales due to the promotion of local products - architectural, commercial - serving the cause of the host nation. Thus, the various adaptations of 'Old city' recorded the materialization of collective memories fabricated to correspond to the challenges of the re-composition of empires and national agendas. These time capsules, fixing the past of the host city for one or several centuries, were like commercial attractions with educational purposes....

This diploma thesis deals with the national presentation of the Czech Republic at EXPO 2010 in Shanghai in terms of mythology, symbols, signs and codes. It describes the history of the World Exhibitions, attempts to highlight Czechoslovak achievements and on the basis of that to define key points of successful communication for an international, predominately Chinese audience. By comparing information on traditional Chinese symbols and values with that of Czech explains correlations between Czech and Chinese culture. This can help visitors from China identify with the Czech Republic. A mythological analysis is executed examining the exterior of the Czech pavilion, the exhibition inside, and notes narrative structures of individual exhibits and how they work to provide the preferred interpretation. Part of the overall analysis includes an overview of supporting events, which also help to strengthen the perception of Czech Republic to visitors. The information gleaned is used to summarize learnings that could be useful for the upcoming EXPO in Milan in 2015.

This thesis deals with Czechoslovakian pavilion architecture at the world exhibitions in the first half of the 20th century. The thesis is divided into three sections. The first section deals with a participation of Czech artists at the world exhibitions before the creation of independent Czechoslovakia. Next two sections focus on Czechoslovakian representation at the world exhibitions in the twenties and thirties of the 20th century. The thesis deals closer with preparations, looking for a basic solutions, choosing of architects and requirements which have been imposed on them. In the conclusion there is outlined development of our participation at the world exhibitions in a given period and its way to the famous EXPO 58.

First documented in the early 18th century, the glassworks has been in existence for three hundred years. However, its prominent status among Bohemian producers of glass is not only due to its long history. What makes it noteworthy is its traditionally outstanding craftsmanship and technological facilities, and mainly its foresighted efforts to employ and further enhance diverse techniques in working with crystal and coloured glass. En España, al igual que en el resto de países europeos a finales del siglo XIX y principios del XX, se hace exhibición de "lo primitivo": personas (indígenas procedentes de los nuevos territorios colonizados) y objetos (piezas de arte y artefactos de la cultura material de los indígenas procedentes de las colonias). Algunas de estas muestras coinciden con las primeras exposiciones organizadas en España: Exposición General de las Islas Filipinas en Madrid (1887), Exposición Universal de Barcelona (1888) y Exposición Internacional de Barcelona (1929). El presente trabajo analiza la presencia o ausencia de "lo primitivo" (personas y objetos) en los principales acontecimientos expositivos españoles, su relación con acontecimientos homónimos en otros países europeos y su posible recepción en colecciones museísticas (museos de antropología, etnología y misionales). / In Spain, as in the rest of European countries at the end of the nineteenth century and beginning of the twentieth, aboriginal from the new colonized territories and "primitive" objects (art and artefacts from the material culture of the colonies) were also exhibited. Some of these events coincide with the first organized Exhibitions in Spain: General Exhibition of the Philippines Islands in Madrid (1887), Barcelona World Exhibition (1888) and Barcelona International Exhibition (1929). This work analyzes the presence or absence of "the primitive" (people and objects) in the major Spanish exhibitions, the relationship with similar events in other European countries and the possible reception in museum collections (museums of anthropology, ethnology and missionary).
