Procedures for searching evidence in the investigation of computer-related crime in Bulawayo, ZimbabweNcube, Njabulo 11 1900 (has links)
Text in English / The continued advancement in myriad technological, societal and legal issues has affected the investigation of computer aided crimes. The investigators are confronted with tremendous impediments as the computer aided and traditional crime scenes differ. The study sought to analyse the procedures for searching evidence in the investigation of computer-related crime with the intention to improve admissibility of such evidence.
The researcher employed empirical design to reach conclusions based upon evidence collected from observations and real life experiences. This aided the researcher to obtain information through face-to-face interviews. The study was qualitative in approach as it consisted of a set of interpretive and material practices that make the real social world visible.
The training curriculum for investigators should include aspects of computer-related crime investigation, search and seizure of computer evidence. Search and collection of computer-related evidence should be done preferably by qualified forensic experts, so that evidence is accepted in court. / Police Practice / M. Tech. Effects of treatment on Lantana camara (L.) and the restoration potential of riparian seed banks in cleared areas of the Victoria Falls World Heritage Site, Livingstone, ZambiaNang'alelwa, Michael Mubitelela January 2010 (has links)
The exotic plant Lantana camara L. has invaded the riparian areas of the Victoria Falls World Heritage Site in Livingstone, southern Zambia, threatening native plant communities which support populations of species of special concern. I trialled the mechanical control method of manual uprooting and 3 different herbicides applied through paint brushing of an imazapyr concentrate at 250g. l¯¹, spraying on cut stumps with metsulfron methyl at 600g.l¯¹, and foliar spraying on re-emergent lantana foliage with glyphosate at a dosage of 166g. l¯¹ in July 2008 in 20 100m2 treatment plots, 5 invaded control plots and 5 uninvaded controls. Follow-up treatments for re-sprouting lantana stumps and emerging seedlings were undertaken in June 2009. I measured effectiveness of the methods using adult lantana mortality in June 2009 and lantana seedling density in the different treatment plots during the follow-up exercise. The cost of the various methods and human labour applied were compared across the four treatments at initial clear and at follow-up. All treatments recorded a high adult lantana mortality rate, though there were no significant differences in lantana adult mortality amongst the treatments. Overall, uprooting had the highest adult mortality, followed by imazapyr, metsulfron and lastly glyphosate. Germination of lantana seedlings after clearing was high for all treatments but with no significant differences occurring between the treatments. Both adult lantana mortality and seedling density were however significantly different from the control. With labour included, chemical costs were far higher relative to uprooting, though uprooting costs were the highest when it came to the follow-up because of the emerging seedlings and some resprouting stumps. The effects of mechanical and chemical treatments on vegetation composition in the cleared areas were also assessed in order to detect any non-target and medium term effects of treatments. Contrary to expectation, none of the chemicals showed any significant effects on vegetation composition in the short and medium-term and no significant differences were found in plant species richness, diversity and seedling density between invaded and uninvaded plots at baseline, in October 2008 and in September 2009. In order to determine potential for unaided vegetation recovery in the riparian areas of the study site after lantana clearing, I conducted an investigation of soil seed banks and seed rain using 60 seed bank samples measuring 1800m³ collected from 30 invaded and uninvaded plots. Using the seedling emergence method, 1, 991 seedlings belonging to 66 species representing 27 families germinated from the seed bank. Sedges (Cyperaceae family) were the most abundant taxa in the seed banks from invaded areas, followed by Ageratum conyzoides, lantana, Triumfetta annua and Achyranthes aspera which also occurred in the uninvaded soil seed banks. The seed banks from uninvaded plots were dominated by the grass Oplismenus hirtellus. Overall, species richness, diversity and seedling density from seed banks in invaded areas did not differ significantly from seed bank in uninvaded areas and there was a low similarity in species composition when above ground vegetation was compared to seed banks from invaded and uninvaded areas. It would appear if natural regeneration occured from the current seed bank in disturbed areas, future vegetation would largely comprise of short lived, early successional species in the short term as the seed bank is dominated by non-native herbaceous weedy species. From the seed traps investigating seed rain, a total of 27 species numbering 623 individual seeds were found in the thirty 1m² seedtraps distributed in invaded and uninvaded areas at the five sites, over an intermittent period of three months. Lantana had the highest monthly arrival rate in the seed traps followed by Phoenix reclinata and Ricinus communis. The number of species with invasive potential found in the seed traps located in invaded areas was more than that found in seed traps under native vegetation cover by far. Considerable forest remnants still occur around the invaded sites, and these could serve as an important source for long-term natural re-establishment of native vegetation if seed availability by animals and wind dispersal continues, while the re-invasion of lantana is prevented by ongoing follow-ups and futher clearing of lantana invaded areas. It is concluded that while uprooting and other treatments are effective in the control of lantana, its successful control in the Victoria Falls World Heritage Site will require extensive clearing to keep it from reinvading infested areas after clearing as shown by the seed rain data. The high seedling density of lantana in the seed banks and in the cleared areas shows the need for ongoing follow-up in order to deplete soil stored seed banks. There is need for longer term research to establish what the exact follow-up requirements are in order to contain lantana re-infestation and create favourable micro-sites for native species to establish. It is predicted that ongoing lantana control in the cleared plots will most likely initiate long-term community recovery.

Reducing conflicts within rural women's self help groups in Hwange District, ZimbabweNyathi, Cresencia January 2017 (has links)

It examines the causes of conflicts and consequences of the conflicts in the SHGs. This is achieved by adopting the conflict transformation approach. Succinctly, the theory views conflict as not necessarily destructive, but as a vehicle for change. This therefore, has implications for one’s understanding of the causes of conflicts. SHGs have been adopted by rural women so that they can work collectively to address their socio-economic problems. The study was conducted in Matetsi ward, Hwange District where conflicts within the groups were broadly detected. The information used in the study were produced from face-to-face interviews, focus group discussions, minute books and testimonials throughout field work in the designated ward. The study exposed that conflicts in the study location emanated from delays in loan repayments by SHG members. Individuals’ failure to fulfil their obligations of saving and returning loans on time created tensions which in turn resulted in conflict among the group members. The conflicts became complex and recurred due to unaddressed animosity, fear and anger, resulting in frustrations in the groups. Conflicts in the groups also led to the collapse of some of the groups. The research findings indicated that SHGs were not only sources of income for rural women, but also represented a yearning for self-sufficiency among rural women in spite of the socio-economic strife in Hwange District. / M

Challenges in the Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Zimbabwe in intergrating and evangelising minority groups after independenceNdlovu, Sikhumbuzo 30 November 2013 (has links)
The integration and evangelisation of the minority groups in Zimbabwe in general,
and in the Seventh-day Adventist Church in particular poses a challenge. The
situation has become more acute after independence. Evidently, the socio-political
atmosphere in Zimbabwe has not ameliorated the condition. Certainly, challenges
stem from issues concerning racial prejudice, finances, cultural differences, as well as
worship styles. While the efforts of the current multicultural ministries are
appreciated, the results of the survey indicate that a lot still needs to be done. First, the
organizational structure of the ministry needs to be reviewed. Such a review is
relevant in order to check and regulate the balance and distribution of power, control
and authority. Second, the need for the recruitment of leaders from within the
minority groups themselves especially from the white population was clearly
articulated. Third, it may be necessary to approach the whole issue from a social
standpoint, so as to formulate theological strategies. Apparently, the social distance is
more pronounced than the theological one. In addition, integration and evangelisation
specifically among the Coloured population is further compounded by the split, which
occurred in the early 1990s. Most of the Sabbath-Keeping Adventists from this group
anticipate challenges if they would opt to merge with the national Conference. Some
of the major barriers to such a step revolve around issues of properties, finances, and
positions as well as the general upkeep of the workers. Unless, these apprehensions
are clarified and the fears are allayed, integration seems enigmatic. Ecclesiological
unity and theological unity in diversity seem to be eclipsed by racial solidarity and
socio-economic and political expediency. Similarly, the reconciliation among the
black majority itself, also needs a close and deliberate attention from both the church
and society in Zimbabwe. For that reason, tribalism, racism, ethnicity, nepotism and
any other discrimination should not be tolerated, first and foremost by the church and
second, by all peace loving Zimbabweans (Gal 3:28). The reconstruction of the
cultural landscape in Zimbabwe demands an affirmation of the common destiny for

The small enterprise section of the economy : a study of the role of social capital in the success of women entrepreneurs in Harare, ZimbabweMutsindikwa, Canisio 12 1900 (has links)
This study to meant to determine the extent to which the Zimbabwean women in the small-scale business sector depended on their social capital to make it. The primary question of the study was: What is the significance of social capital in determining the success or failure of women’s businesses in Zimbabwe? Methodologically, the study followed the constructivist approach, which aimed at obtaining detailed and thick in-depth descriptions from the women who are socially a vulnerable group. It followed the qualitative research design; whose characteristics were dependence on the narratives of the discussants to explain phenomena. Non-probability sampling was preferred, and the sampling techniques used were mainly purposive. The sample comprised 21 participants, drawn from a population of women in small scale businesses in Glen Norah A, Glen View 1 and Highfield in Harare. The researcher used focus group discussions and individual interviews for data collection. Data was analysed thematically. The key findings were that women were dependent on their bonding and linking social capital to succeed (or fail) in business. Thus, such findings constitute some of the major contributions of the study to the commonwealth of knowledge. In particular one contribution is that women’s business development in the small-scale informal sector follows a particular lifecycle where different types of social capital are required. The findings led to the recommendations that women must be recognized as key players in economic development, and should be assisted at nascent stages so that their participation in economic development can be more robust and visible. / Sociology / D. Potential strategies for harnessing indigenous rainmaking practices to combat the negative effects of climate change in Chimamimani District of ZimbabweMarango, Timothy 18 September 2017 (has links)
PhDRDV / Institute for Rural Development / Currently, there is limited understanding, appreciation and dissemination of indigenous raining making practices. Yet indigenous rain making is part of the rich African heritage. The current study was premised on the view that indigenous rain making practices can help combat the negative effects of climate change if properly integrated with western science. A mixture of exploratory and survey designs was adopted in this study, which sought to examine the common indigenous rainmaking practices in Chimanimani District of Zimbabwe prior to developing strategies for reducing the negative impacts of climate change on the livelihoods of rural households. Various studies with the following specific objectives were carried out: to analyze the general community perceptions on the potential of indigenous rain making practices in combating the negative effects of climate change; to examine the components of indigenous rainmaking practices; analyse the means of disseminating knowledge on indigenous rainmaking; to identify the negative effects of climate change on the livelihoods of rural households; to assess the effectiveness of existing strategies used by households to cope with the negative effects of climate change; and to propose strategies for utilizing indigenous rainmaking practices to counter the negative effects of climate change on the livelihoods of rural households. Semi-structured interview guides and a questionnaire requiring responses on a Likert-type scale were used to collect data. Key informants and ordinary community members were selected using judgmental, convenient and snowballing sampling techniques. The Thematic Content Analysis technique was used to draw meaning out of the qualitative data. Chi-Square tests for Goodness of Fit were conducted using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) to establish if there were significant relationships among perceptions.
It was indicated that the shift in seasons as exemplified by the Nyamavhuvhu wind which now swept Chimanimani in September or October instead of end of July to August was evidence of climate change. Responses with respect to the negative effects of climate change included food insecurity, and drying up of streams and rivers. Availability of water for domestic, agricultural and animal use was becoming increasingly unreliable. The respondents argued that they believed in the effectiveness of indigenous rain making if it is conducted following local customs and traditions. Significant differences in the following perceptions were observed for “Besides makoto and Christian prayers there are other common rainmaking practices practiced in Chimanimani District” (p < 0.05). Similar results were observed with regard to “I believe indigenous and western knowledge of rainmaking can complement each other” (P < 0.001), and “There is increase in pests and plant diseases than before” (P < 0.01). identified in the current study included rain making ceremonies (makoto), which entailed use of beer, sacrificial bird (normally a cock) and natural resources conservation such as keeping places for local rain making rituals sacred (zvitenguro), not destroying very big trees for example fig tree (muonde: Ficus capensis), mukute (Syzygium cordatum) and others, and treating forests as sacred. With respect to the negative effects of climate change, a highly significant difference was observed for duration of stay in relation to, “There is now a high risk in planting winter wheat due to changes in climate” (P < 0.01); “Wetlands are disappearing in our area” (P < 0.01); “There is general reduction in yields due to climate change” (P < 0.001) and “We are experiencing scarcity of water for domestic animals and for household use” (P < 0.05). Lastly, highly significant relationships between “Rivers are drying up in our area” and education (P < 0.01) and duration of stay (P < 0.001).
Methods used to disseminate indigenous knowledge of rain making were said to be ineffective. Information was being passed on through oral means. It was indicated that better use of modern technology and social media, in particular radio, television, Twitter, WhatsApp and Facebook might enhance people’s knowledge on indigenous rain making. By so doing, the perception that indigenous rain making was merely history and not knowledge that can be used in people’s daily lives would be eliminated. Furthermore, current strategies utilized to combat the negative effects of climate change were reported to be unsustainable. Among these were reliance on harvesting wild fruits for sale and hunting. Human activities such as veld fires, deforestation and over harvesting of wildlife were viewed in negative light with respect to combating negative effects of climate change. It was proposed that communities should revert to respecting traditional beliefs of conserving forests. This said to be key in normalizing climate, attracting back the birds and animals that used to be key in weather forecasting. Replanting and indiscriminate cutting of trees along rivers as effective prevention of stream bank cultivation were proposed. Re-introduction of heavy fines by traditional leadership was suggested as a tried and tested strategy that was no longer being applied when implementing conservation initiatives. The observation made in this study that western science and indigenous rain making practices were similar in many respects, suggested that these were opportunities that could be used to anchor strategies for integrating them. In addition to this, the need for establishing collective deliberation or interface platforms coupled with continuous communication and careful management of intellectual property was obvious.

Investigating the performance of a community based approach to solid waste management: A case study of Nkulumane Suburb in Bulawayo, ZimbabweMkumbuzi, Sinqobile Helen 18 May 2018 (has links)
MENVSC / Department of Ecology and Resource Management / Solid waste management (SWM) has become an issue of increasing worldwide concern as urban populations continue to rise and consumption patterns change. The health and environmental effects associated with SWM are escalating, predominantly in the perspective of developing countries. The rise in rural-urban migration rates in developing countries has left local authorities overwhelmed and failing to cope with the increase in solid waste. This has led to a shift from conventional systems of solid waste management to contemporary systems such as community based solid waste management (CBSWM). Despite the shift, it seems local authorities in developing countries still fail to manage suburban waste effectively. This study investigated the performance of a CBSWM scheme in Nkulumane, a high-density suburb in Bulawayo. Both quantitative and qualitative data were collected, hence a mixed methods approach employed. The study incorporated systematic sampling and purposive sampling in the selection of research participants. Data was collected through qualitative questionnaires, semi structured interviews and field observations. Thematic content analysis and descriptive statistics from SPSS version 25 were used in data analysis. The study revealed that community members from Nkulumane had sound knowledge on what CBSWM entails, however the community members had negative attitude towards CBSWM and traditional notions on SWM had an influence of their perception of CBSWM concepts. The study also revealed that Bulawayo City Council had managed to create employment for the community through a CBSWM scheme. Furthermore, operating expenses of the city council had decreased over the years. The level of environmental awareness had improved in the study area as well. However, Bulawayo City Council has battled with community participation problems, financial constraints and inter-institutional infighting. This study provides a comprehensive report on the performance of the CBSWM scheme in Nkulumane high density suburb, Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. / NRF

An investigation into nation building through the national anthem in Zimbabwe : a sociolinguistic approachDlodlo, Sindile 11 1900 (has links)
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 171-177) / The study is an investigation into nation building through the national anthem in Zimbabwe. It
takes a sociolinguistic dimension where the languages used to sing the national anthem in
Zimbabwe are interrogated. The impetus behind the study is that Zimbabwe introduced a new
language policy through the constitution where sixteen languages are officially recognised.
While citizens look forward to the use of their languages, national symbols such as the national
anthem still exist in dominant languages, at least officially. The study therefore sought to find
out the views and language choices of citizens when it comes to singing the national anthem.
This purpose was fulfilled by eliciting data through questionnaires which were distributed to
four areas where marginalised languages are spoken. Participants were drawn from Plumtree,
Gwanda, Hwange and Binga. Apart from questionnaires, focus group interviews were
conducted with language activists who participate in language associations. Individual
interviews were conducted with academics in the area of language. The conceptual framework
of the study is nation building which is underpinned by four tenets, while the theory that guided
the study is Bourdieu’s theory of social practice. The conceptual framework and theoretical
framework were chosen to allow the study to investigate nation building in relation to the sociopolitical context which determines the use of languages in different spheres in Zimbabwe. The
study extricates that language is politically malleable and at the same time has the potential to
make or break the nation. Respondents were of mixed views concerning the non-use of their
languages in the national anthem, bringing out the hegemonic tendencies. The findings of the
study show that language is a form of identity and a strong tool of nation building. However,
language policies which are not clear tend to confuse the citizens and there is need for the
political elite to be involved in the implementation of such policies. The study hence advocates
for marginalised languages to be accorded the status they need in order to be used for national

The use of mobile phones in disseminating agricultural information to farmers in Mashonaland west province of ZimbabweMabika, Benhildah 11 1900 (has links)
The study investigated the use of mobile phones in disseminating information on
agriculture to the farming community of Mashonaland West Province of Zimbabwe, with
a view to improving the coverage gap created by the available initiatives. Relevant
literature on the available and successful mobile phones agricultural information
dissemination platforms were extensively reviewed, taking into consideration the
Mashonaland West Province farmers’ information needs. Formats, channels and
sources currently being used to transmit agricultural information to farmers were
investigated. Barriers to the use of mobile phones in transmitting agricultural information
were as well investigated. Data was gathered on the farmers’ access to mobile phones
and ownership of mobile phones. The survey research methodology was used for data
collection because the research involved a large sample in a widespread geographical
area. Quantitative research approach was used and questionnaires were used for data
collection. The respondents for the study comprised farmers, network providers and
other agricultural stakeholders in the province. A sample of 384 farmers, and 13
network providers and other stakeholders participated in the survey. Quantitative data
was analysed using the the SPSS software while the little qualitative data which was
available was analysed through content analysis. The findings of the study indicated
that farmers in Mashonaland West Province of Zimbabwe were willing to get updates on
agricultural information via cell phones. However, majority of the farmers could not
afford the high mobile data tariffs being charged by network service providers, and the
costs of subscription charged by the available agricultural information dissemination
platforms. The study mainly recommended that the government should establish mobile
phone agricultural information dissemination platforms that can be accessed by farmers
for free or that which will charge affordable rates. The study adds to the existing
knowledge on how mobile phones can be used in disseminating agricultural information
