A Performance Guide to Bernd Alois Zimmermann's Trumpet Concerto, "Nobody Knows De Trouble I See"

Haley, Matthew 05 1900 (has links)
Bernd Zimmermann's Trumpet Concerto, "Nobody Knows de Trouble I See" is an important twentieth-century work for trumpet. Despite the stature of the composition, it has rarely been performed due to its considerable musical and technical demands. Integrating these diverse demands into a coherent performance requires careful consideration of the various performance practice consequences. The study begins by exploring the historical and musical context in which the work was written. It then considers the individual musical elements of the concerto. Finally, the study examines the performance practice implications of the work. The performance guide serves as a framework for making intelligent musical and technical decisions through context, analysis, and practical considerations.

Body Coupled Communication: Ändring av prototypkort

Andersson, Isak, Karlsson, Melki January 2014 (has links)
Communication using the human body as a transmission medium, the capacitive coupling between the skin and sensor, has been an active research area for PAN (Personal Area Network) since Thomas Guthrie Zimmerman introduced the technique in 1995. The reason for this is to examine the benefits and uses of a communication method that does not emit RF signals and thus reduce the risk of unauthorized interception. This report describes a thesis that examines the possibility of elimination of USB to UART converter on Microchip BodyCom through software USB-stack and combine this with Body Coupled Communication functionality in a single microcontroller. Furthermore, studies on if the application code in Body Coupled Communication transmitters can be modified to extend functionality. It was given in the conditions that microcontrollers from Microchip should be used, furthermore, low price and low power consumption were important, especially for the transmitter. The method for achieving this has been the use of Microchip BodyCom development kit with USB Microchip low pin count development kit and Microchip USB firmware framework. The result was that the USB- to UART-converter could be integrated with Microchip BodyCom, using software USB-stack and a modified program code for BodyCom in a single microcontroller. Only your imagination sets the limits for Body Coupled Communication can be used for. For example, it would be possible to exchange electronic business cards by a handshake or open a locked door only by using the handle.

The Realm of Self-Regulated Learning (SRL): An Examination of SRL in an Elementary Classroom Setting and its Relevancy to Trends in our Current Curricula

Lutfi, Duaa 01 December 2013 (has links)
Teaching and instructing students is a necessity, but creating ways to challenge them is a priority. This thesis focuses on Barry Zimmerman and Timothy Clearly’s Self-Regulation Empowerment Program (SREP). This model uses a problem-solving approach in establishing Self-Regulated Learning (SRL) strategies in students’ learning. Stemming from interdisciplinary questions such as, “what will help students be successful in and outside the classroom?” and “how do teachers challenge students without stifling their creativity?” this purpose of this study aims to explore the realm of Self-Regulated Learning (SRL). The present study further examines if SRL strategies and practices foster learning and are prevalent in current trends and curricula such as, Marzano and Common Core. After thorough analysis of student observations and coding of data, the findings concluded that SRL strategies fostered student learning. Students studied were more readily motivated to regulate their learning and attempt challenging tasks. Moreover these findings indicated an increase in student success and metacognitive knowledge, as the students were provided with more opportunities to engage in self-talk, self-reflection, strategic planning, and goal setting. Results suggested the flexibility of the SREP model and its application to current instructional practices. Implications and recommendations for further research into the SRL model across other disciplines are also presented and discussed.

A Study of the Utilization of Panel Method for Low Aspect Ratio Wing Analysis

Newey, William Barton D 01 June 2020 (has links) (PDF)
This study demonstrates the applicability of using a modified application strategy of panel method to analyze low aspect ratio wings at preliminary design phases. Conventional panel methods fail to capture the leading edge vortex (LEV) that is shed by wings with low aspect ratios, typically below 2 depending on planform. This aerodynamic phenomenon contributes to a significant amount of the lift of these wings and the result is a drastic underestimation of the lift characteristics when analyzed by conventional panel method. To capture the effect of the leading edge vortex, a panel method code was used with an extended definition of the Kutta condition along portions of the leading edge inducing a vortex to shed from the leading edge and flow aft just inside the leading edge. To validate that this method, it was applied to 2 elliptical planforms with constant thickness where experimental force balance data was available. Additionally, the same 2 wings were analyzed using a finite volume solver to compare pressure distributions and to demonstrate the difference in magnitude of solution times. For comparison purposes, the resulting forces and moments from both computational methods and experimental testing were plotted over a range of angles of attack. Overall, the results demonstrate that a modified panel method could be used during the preliminary design phases for low aspect ratio wings. The panel method can reasonably model the lift and induced drag characteristics of low aspect ratio wings. This method loses applicability beyond the stall point where the leading edge vortex breaks down and oversimplifies pitching moment relation to angle of attack. Additionally, when compared to finite volume solutions of the same scenario, the panel method provided a result 20 to 30 times faster than the finite volume solutions. With this in mind, the modified panel method application strategy lends itself to preliminary design phases of low aspect ratio wings where the level of detail does not warrant finite volume analysis and solution speed has higher priority.

Pierre-Joseph-Guillaume Zimmerman (1785-1853) : l’homme, le pédagogue, le musicien / Pierre-Joseph-Guillaume Zimmerman (1785-1853) : the Man, the Teacher, the Musicien

Ueda, Yasushi 16 September 2016 (has links)
Born as the eldest son of a piano manufacturer, Pierre Joseph Guillaume Zimmerman (1785-1853) was one of the piano promoters in the first half of the nineteenth century, this can clearly be seen from his activities as a piano virtuoso, educator, composer and socialite. His unique role consisted of his dual occupation as a successor to Cherubini in academic composition, and also his role as a passionate supporter of the modernization of the piano. This thesis is a monographic study of Zimmermann, and explores the multiple aspects of the activities in which the musician became famous for in different periods of his life. In the first part, I discuss his origins and his life before 1831. I discuss his studies at the Conservatoire, his first pedagogical contributions, his marriages, his classical piano works (Sonata op.5 and two concertos) and two operas. The second part covers the period from 1831 to 1842. I consider the increase in the number of students from his class who became winners of the annual piano competition, his method Encyclopédie du pianiste compositeur – which favours the études as a genre – and the salon concerts that he organized at his apartment in the Square d’Orléans. The third and final part relates to the post-Cherubini period from 1842 to 1853 in which I focus on his contribution to the organization of the Association des artistes musiciens, his two masses, his last years as a professor of Conservatoire, and the life after his retirement in 1848. The information provided in the second volume of annexes also highly complement this study by presenting a family tree, his portraits, civil registers of the Zimmermans, his letters and the other documents.
