A produção espetacular do espaço: as cidades como cenário da Copa do Mundo de 2014 / The Spectacular production of the space: the cities as cenary to the 2014Gonçalves, Glauco Roberto 05 February 2016 (has links)
This research approaches the conditions and contradictions between the production of urban space and its image, based on the FIFAs Football World Cup 2014 event. For this purpose, uses the theoretical and methodological bases arising from Henri Lefebvre, Guy Debord and other members of the Situationist International, as well as Karl Marx and Robert Kurz. The Cup host cities in 2014, especially Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and São Lourenço da Mata/Recife, constitute the scope of analysis to understand the relations between state and capital as well as their ways of realization in daily life and space. Seeking to unravel the States role in the (critical) reproduction of capitalism, we have analyzed the Federal Laws aimed at the 2014 World Cup, the BNDESs line of credit granted for the construction of the World Cup stadiums; the Differentiated Contracting Regime; the Public-Private Partnerships; and the Development Incentive Certificates granted by São Paulos City Hall. The results and consequences of this process are materialized in urban spatiality and in daily life through strategies such as the FIFAs Fan Fests; smart city; naming right; areas of trade restraint; crime of ambush marketing; ranking city-brands; FIFAs image rights and marketing rights. In light of this arises the hypothesis that the production of space becomes spectacular, and the city becomes scenario to the extent that its image is produced and marketed autonomized of its contents and contradictions. Reduced to scenario, the city faces new processes of fragmentation and segregation, which enables us to a better understanding of the new business with the urban and its landscape.

A Copa do Mundo de 2014: Brasil entre cidades de exceção e cidades rebeldes / The World Cup 2014: Brazil between exceptional cities and rebel townsCarvalho, Mauricio Costa de 13 March 2015 (has links)
This dissertation aims to examine the implementation of the World Cup 2014 in Brazil, taking into consideration not only its legacy and most obvious impacts, but mostly understanding it as a substantive part of the wider dynamics of the capitalist way of production in its relationship with the host cities, the places. As some of the biggest events on the planet, the World Cups are presented as individual and transitory vehicles of the aggregation process of capitalism, while being simultaneous matrices of time and space during this historical period marked by global economic crisis. In this movement, having spaces as the places of their full realization, these mega events leave deep marks; they promote the qualification of a certain fraction of the time in which they occur, determined by the needs of capital to play profitably, something complex during this critical moment. The totality, this \"web of events\" tangled between the concrete needs and possibilities of places, gains new designs in cities from contact with the agenda set by the mega event. Since 2007, when Brazil was chosen to host this event and the economic crisis had already appeared on the North American and European horizon, Brazilian cities are living the reality of a critical agenda guided by the International Football Federation (FIFA). In the background of the rigid strategies of the sponsors and corporations interested in the event, a true state of emergency is promoted to meet norms and \"FIFA standards\". Taken by an avalanche of construction sites and real state negotiations unrelated to strategic plans that take into account the needs of the population, the host cities become experiments in new forms of privatization and dispossession, under the regime of emergency laws and rights violations. Such dynamics - imposed on the World Cup cities as a whole - is clearly manifested in the drafting of a new central location in the metropolitan area of Recife through the construction of large real estate project called \"Cidade da Copa\", around the stadium built for the event. This is the outbreak in Brazil of a fundamentally urban crisis, where on the one hand \"cities of exception\" are structured, and in another vertex a creative power of resistance is also promoted. As demonstrated in the multitudinous urban protests of June 2013 and the uninterrupted protests that followed them, the requital that took places in host cities can also structure \"rebellious cities\" as legacies.

Development of Experimental and Finite Element Models to Show Size Effects in the Forming of Thin Sheet MetalsMorris, Jeffrey D 05 August 2019 (has links)
Abstract
An experimental method was developed that demonstrated the size effects in forming thin sheet metals, and a finite element model was developed to predict the effects demonstrated by the experiment. A universal testing machine (UTM) was used to form aluminum and copper of varying thicknesses (less than 1mm) into a hemispherical dome. A stereolithography additive manufacturing technology was used to fabricate the punch and die from a UV curing resin. There was agreement between the experimental and numerical models. The results showed that geometric size effects were significant for both materials, and these effects increased as the thickness of the sheets decreased. The demonstration presents an inexpensive method of testing small-scale size effects in forming processes, which can be altered easily to produce different shapes and clearances.

The 2010 FIFA World Cup and the use of the housing asset for income generation : ǂb a case study of the eThekwini Municipality.Goorbhare, Orisha. 29 October 2014 (has links)
South Africa was presented with the unique opportunity of hosting the first 2010 FIFA World
Cup (FWC) on African soil. This unique opportunity further extended itself to the non-hotel
accommodation providers, as it was the first time in history that FIFA agreed to accredit non-hotel
accommodation providers for the tournament. The research intended to examine the
extent of the use of the housing asset to generate income from the 2010 FWC. The study was
conducted in the municipal area of eThekwini Municipality (Durban), South Africa. The case
study areas consisted of the lower-middle income, upper-middle income and high-income
areas of Umbilo, Manor Gardens and Durban North respectively.
The data collection method used in the study areas was a household survey with 30
respondents. The respondents were from the high-income area of Durban North, upper
middle-income area of Manor Gardens and lower-middle income area of Umbilo. Interviews
were conducted to collect data from financial institutions. Data was collected from
conventional and non-conventional financial institutions. The findings of the study revealed
that the extent to which the housing asset was used to generate income from the 2010 FWC
was not high or considerable. This was due to many home-based enterprise (HBE) owners
stating that FIFA would stand to benefit largely from the 2010 FWC, with no institutional
support for HBE owners to benefit from government. It was also found that conventional and
non-conventional financial institutions were not willing to provide financial assistance to
HBE owners specifically for generating income from the 2010 FIFA World Cup, due to the
short duration of the event.
In conclusion, it was recommended that instruments to drive the implementation of the
policies be deployed, to create an enabling environment for the small business sector to grow
at a household level. A policy should be developed in eThekwini Municipality that
standardises the land use management applications and zoning for accommodation providers
and HBEs in line with the eThekwini Municipality’s drive to be the ‘Events Capital of
Africa’. Intervention from government at all levels is required to ensure that the HBEs in the
small business sector benefit from mega-events such as the 2010 FWC. / M. Housing University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban 2013.

Nzokou, André 05 1900 (has links)
Acetabular implant revision with large bone defects, can be challenging. One of the reconstruction options is a large outer diameter cup or “jumbo cup” (≥62 mm in women and ≥66 mm in men). We hypothesized that cementless jumbo cups is a reliable technique to preserve or reconstruct hip center of rotation. We also evaluated stability at least 2 two years follow up.
Fifty-three consecutive non septic loosening acetabular arthroplasty revisions at Hopital Maisonneuve-Rosemont where a cementless jumbo cup was used were assessed. Bone defect was evaluated according to Paprosky classification. Mean implanted component size was 66 mm (62-81) in women and 68 mm (66-75) in men. Cancelous bone chips allograft was used in 34 cases and bulk bone allograft in 14. Immediate postoperative AP view showed a mean abduction cup angle of 41.3° (26.0-53.0). Hip centre were found at satisfy position in 78% on mediolateral axis, in 71% on craniopodal axis and it was improved in 27% in this late axis. At the mean follow up of 84.0 months (24.0-236.4) radiologically and 91.8 months (24.0-241.8) clinically: 6 patients were died and 3 were lost of follow up. Complications were: dislocation in 5 cases (4 revisions with constrained liner), infection in 4 cases (2 treated conservatively and 2 revised in 2 times procedure) and radiographic loosening in 1 case. Bone graft integration was completed in all except in 3 cases. Clinically, the mean HHS was 82% +/- 17, WOMAC 86 +/- 14, physical SF-12 46 +/- 12 and mentally SF-12 53 +/- 13.
Jumbo cups appear as a reliable procedure to manage bone loss in acetabular revision. It allows conservation or improvement of physiologic hip center. Also, cementless fixation promote bone integration. with subsequent cup stabilitity. The complication rate is comparable or may be less than others reconstruction procedures .

Previous issue date: 2017-03-02 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / This research sought to understand the symbolic production of media discourses relating to World Cup 2014, identifying a possible amalgamation between the arguments of advertisements and news stories related to the event, mainly directed to the construction of a idealized fan. This theme was designed after identifying a more positive tone in advertising and journalistic materials directed to competition, during and after the riots of 2013 in Brazil, in which, among several guidelines, critical to the achievement of the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil questioned the excessive governmental spending and local rights violations communities located in the host cities. As objects of study, was selected advertisements of sponsoring brands of the Brazilian Team and journalistic content of the Jornal Nacional and ESPNS’s SportsCenter, which were submitted to Discourse Analysis. In order to understand the communication processes and cultural practices involving this sport, we base the theoretical assumptions on Cultural Studies, seeking to understand the interface between football, the media discourse and cultural production of the media. We identify the reproduction of stereotypes consolidated about the Brazilian people, Brazil and, beyond that, trying to shape a committed supporter but docile. Among journalistic objects analyzed, the information contained in SportsCenter was the least approached this profile, but with the approach of the mega event, reports unveiled the ethos of the perfect Brazil and chimeric fan.
