Synthesizing the Experiences of Children and Youth With Disabilities and Special Needs in Inclusive Education Using Meta-Aggregation

It has been well established that inclusive education is important in order to achieve high-quality education for all. Recent literature reviews examining the experiences of educators, parents, and students without disabilities in inclusive educations show that most have a positive attitude towards inclusive education. However, there is an important gap in the literature surrounding inclusive education, namely the perspectives of children and youth with disabilities and special needs. The first manuscript is a qualitative evidence synthesis on the perspectives of children and youth with disabilities and special needs regarding their experiences in inclusive education. I utilised the meta-aggregative approach developed by Joanna Briggs Institute to select, critically appraise, and synthesise qualitative studies to generate an understanding of the children’s experiences in different areas pertaining to their schooling. I suggest recommendations to be considered by policy makers and professionals working in the education system to better support students with disabilities, educators, and families. The second manuscript presents a reflection on the experience of conducting a meta- aggregative review from my point of view as a novice researcher. I highlight the specific challenges encountered, decision-making process, and the specific lessons learned at each stage of the review process with aims to help guide reviewers taking on a meta-aggregation or other similar tasks. I used my meta-aggregative review presented in my first manuscript as an example, where applicable, to elucidate the processes and lessons learned. Specific strategies and recommendation are outlined in this thesis that can serve to better support the implementation of inclusive education. Additionally, I present recommendations for reviewers and organizations developing literature review methods to improve the field and quality of qualitative evidence synthesis. / Thesis / Master of Science (MSc) / Inclusive education refers to the concept that all students, including students with disabilities, attend their neighbourhood schools and have the chance to participate in programs and activities with their peers. Although inclusive education is believed to be beneficial for everyone, we do not know much about the students’ experiences in these schools. In this thesis, I studied the school experiences of elementary, middle, and high school students with disabilities and special needs. While completing this study, I faced several challenges and difficult decisions. So, I described some likely challenges to doing this type of study, my decision-making process, and the specific lessons I learned while completing my first study; we hope to help guide researchers taking on similar tasks. Findings from my thesis contributes to a better understanding of students’ experiences in school. They also highlight how teachers, families, and others can help and be better supported to improve the students’ school experience.

A Multifaith Military: Religiosity and Belonging Among Muslim Canadian Armed Forces Members

In studying the experiences of Muslim Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) members by way of ethnographic interviews, I investigate both religious accommodation and feelings of belonging among individuals in this minority faith group. Interviews demonstrate that the CAF and its Chaplain Branch are generally equipped and willing to accommodate the practice of Islam by personnel. I argue, however, that as a result of accommodation, which marks Muslim CAF as “different,” as well as military culture, which conflicts with certain aspects of Islamic doctrine and practice, the experience of unity that is fundamental to the Canadian Armed Forces is limitedly available to Muslim members. This research is the first ethnographic study of a specific minority religious experience in the CAF. It builds on a small, but growing discourse about religiosity and spirituality in the Canadian military that includes the development of the Chaplain Branch as a multifaith service. / Thesis / Master of Arts (MA)

Ways to Design Holiday Accommodations for People With Dementia and Their Family Caregivers

The “graying” of the population is proceeding rapidly, and the prevalence of people living with dementia is rising. Dementia is a syndrome due to the disease of the brain, which is characterized by a progressive, global deterioration in the intellect including memory, learning, orientation, language, comprehension, and judgment. This entails an increased need for assistance with daily tasks. In most cases, family members perform the caregiving role. However, providing care and support for someone with dementia is associated with an enormous emotional, physical, and social stress. Therefore, it is necessary for caregivers to take periods of rest regularly and to take care of their own health. In Germany, assisted vacations have been established as an important type of potential support for family caregivers. They go on a vacation together with their care recipient. During their stay, professionals and volunteers assist with the care and, as a result, relieve the family caregivers. Unfortunately, few vacation accommodations meet the specific needs of the target group. Especially, a proper design of the physical environment can positively affect functionality, behavior, and well-being among people with dementia and, thus, also benefit the caregivers. Former research on designing dementia-friendly environments has been heterogenic, and little is known about how to design the built environment for people with dementia outside nursing homes. The purpose of this paper is to explore ways of designing holiday accommodations for people with dementia and their family caregivers. The methods used were, first, a literature review on design and family caregiving for people with dementia. This aimed at identifying dementia-friendly physical features and at determining dementia caregivers’ characteristics. Second, a case study of existing holiday homes was carried out to detect strengths and weaknesses of their built environments. In combination, caregiver’s demands on the design of the built environment were assessed through qualitative interviews with caregivers. Consequently, design criteria were developed through a synthesis of the result of the previous steps. Finally, the resulting design criteria were transferred into a concept for a prototypical holiday accommodation. Results suggest that a holiday accommodation, which meets the demands of the target group on the built environment, has to be barrier-free and dementia-friendly designed; has to offer situational orientation cues; and provides space for activities, communication, and retreat. This paper represents a first approach of exploring ways to design dementia-friendly holiday homes. There is a need to further examine the resulting ideas.

Dialect Contact: Lexical Availability as a Measure of the Acquisition of Characteristics from Another Dialect

This study uses lexical availability as a way in which to measure the level of an individual's acquisition of the dialect of their spouse. Although lexical availability studies are in abundance, to the author's knowledge, this is one of the few, if not the only, type of study that uses lexical availability to measure dialect contact. Lexical availability studies attempt to determine the most readily available lexical items in an individual's lexicon. This study implemented standard methodologies in order to determine whether dialect contact was more likely when specific topics were chosen. That is, if the topic in question was considered a masculine topic, would the female spouse utilise the spouse's word and vice versa. Participants completed vocabulary lists on six different topics of interest in addition to noting down their definition of a series of visual images that appeared before them.The conclusions highlight that, for this study at least, men are more likely to show evidence of dialect contact if the topic under scrutiny is traditionally considered male-related. The same is true for female participants, that is, the probability of their exhibiting dialect interference is greater if the topic is considered female-related. The results also showed that, in general, women are more likely to use their spouse's vocabulary item. The length of time that the couple had been married was not an overly telling factor.

Self-Advocacy Training in Secondary Schools for Students with Learning Disabilities

To be successful in the general education students with disabilities may require accommodations. Students with disabilities need to develop self-advocating skills to be able to request the accommodations needed in the general education. This article describes a study in which six high school students with learning disabilities were explicitly taught to recognize when an accommodation was needed, select the appropriate accommodation, request the accommodation and then implement the accommodation in the general education classroom. The study indicated that students were able to advocate for themselves by requesting accommodations from their general education teacher. Based on data collected though this study, it is important for self-advocacy training to be implemented in the curriculum for all students with disabilities.

Malingering Detection Measure Utility and Concordance in a University Accommodation-Seeking Student Population

According to the Americans with Disabilities Act, universities and colleges are required to provide accommodative services for students with disabilities. Many studies have examined the role of malingering mental health symptoms in order to obtain psychotropic medications, but very little research has been done on the role of accommodations as secondary gain in students who may malinger learning disabilities. This study sought to examine both the usefulness of implementing specific malingering detection measures in psychological evaluations with university students and the agreement of those measures within the population. Archival data was gathered from a university accommodation clinic that provided free psychological evaluations for consecutively presenting students (N=121). Four malingering detection measures were used: the Test of Memory and Malingering (TOMM), the Word Memory Test (WMT), the WAIS Digit Span (DS) and two cut scores for the MMPI-2 F Scale (F Scale 80 and F Scale 95). Scores for these four malingering detection measures were compared in terms of their agreement rates, their classification rates (at a 10% malingering base rate recommendation), and their sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive powers using both the TOMM and WMT independently as diagnostic criterion. A qualitative examination of the data revealed that different combinations of measures did classify some of the same respondents as malingering. Results indicated that each of these four measures share the ability to detect malingering in its different forms and have similar classification rates. Although the TOMM and WMT likely provide overlapping information, the pragmatic implementation of one of these measures may assist in the evaluation of suspected malingering with accommodation-seeking students.

The outcome of this project is a proposal called Nämdöskärgården Marine Wildlife Center, located on Nämdö in the area of Östanvik. The proposal consists of a series of structures that together will function as a gate to the wildlife experience of the national park, for both educational, scientific and leisure purposes. The program is essentially divided in two main components: (1) a publicly profiled visitor center including functions such as exhibition space, science and lecture hall, bar/restaurant as well as an office space and a conference room, and (2) accommodation typologies aimed to meet the needs from a broad variety of guest constellations at any season of the year. Additionally, along the shoreline of the bay the proposal also suggests two leisure oriented structures and jetties; one bathing jetty with a sauna and locker room and one guest jetty for boats and a rental service for outdoor wildlife activities.
