Occupational Factors Affecting the Accommodative Response in the Human Vision System

Hynes, Niall J. January 2020 (has links)
Accommodative microfluctuations (AMFs) are temporal variations in the accommodative response. AMFs can be divided into two categories, the low frequency component (LFC) measuring below 0.6 Hz and the high frequency component (HFC) measuring between 1.0 and 2.3 Hz. This thesis examined occupational factors that may affect AMFs comprising of cognitive demand, visual fatigue and the type of digital display used. These effects were measured by assessing changes in the LFC, mid frequency component (MFC), HFC, and RMS accommodation. Analysis of chaos and the overall accommodative response (AR) was also used. Furthermore, an investigation into inter- and intra-participant variability was completed. The HFC was shown to increase in line with increasing cognitive demand. A significant effect for task duration was found at higher accommodative demands for the overall AR, LFC and MFC. There was a significant effect on the LFC and AR depending on the type of display used during near work. The HFC and MFC were found to be less repeatable in the same participant relative to LFC, RMS accommodation and AR measurements. AMFs appear to have an effect on occupational factors, however more research is required to assess how much of an effect they may have relative to other ocular factors that affect occupational settings.

Who calls the tune? Participation and partnership in research

Karban, Kate, Paley, C., Willcock, K. January 2011 (has links)
Yes / This paper explores issues of partnership and participation in research and evaluation, drawing on the experiences of evaluating a move from hostel accommodation to independent supported living for people with mental health difficulties or learning disabilities. The service change project involved a partnership between a local authority and a housing association with over 300 people moving into their own tenancies in newly-built flats and bungalows. The accompanying evaluation was designed on a model of service user participation and action research and was specifically concerned to explore the impact of the changes on people’s actual or perceived social inclusion into local communities. Ten service user and carer researchers, some of whom were directly involved in the move from hostel to independent living, were recruited and worked with ‘professional’ researchers to examine both the process and the outcomes of the move. The work will be viewed through the insights offered by feminist, transformative and participatory approaches to research. The ‘positioning’ of the researcher in relation to boundaries and the construction of the ‘other’ will be considered, emphasising an approach grounded in reflexivity and an acknowledgement of the complex ethical issues involved. A key feature of this study has been the negotiation involved between a complex change project and a participatory evaluation design. Learning points from the work so far will also be considered in terms of their wider application in future evaluations of complex change projects that involve multiple stakeholders.

The effect of light crude oil contamination on the geotechnical properties of kaolinite clay soil

Ota, Jonathan Okore January 2013 (has links)
Crude oil is of economic importance to any nation. However its poor management and disposal method has resulted in oil spillage and ground contamination. Most emphasis on crude oil contamination on the environment has been on surface and ground water pollution, as well as plants and animals with little or no attention paid to the engineering properties of the contaminated soil. This research is thus aimed at investigating the effect of light crude oil contamination on the geotechnical properties of kaolinite clay soil. This research is a laboratory based experiment in which the contaminated soil was prepared by adding different percentages of light crude oil (2%, 5%, 8%, 10%, 15% and 20%) measured by weight of the dry soil sample and mixed until a uniform mixture was obtained. The British Standard Test Methods for Civil Engineering purposes BS 1377: 1990 (EUROCODE 7: EN 1997: 2-5) was adopted with few modifications. The calculations were based on the fact that the pore space in the contaminated soil is occupied by water and crude oil so water content was calculated from the fluid content and the rate of evaporation of crude oil during oven drying was also considered. The classification results showed that crude oil contamination caused an increase in linear shrinkage, liquid limit, plastic limit and plasticity index between 0% to 20% contaminations. The compaction result showed that there was an increase in maximum dry density while the optimum moisture content decreased between 0% and 15% of crude oil contamination. The result showed that the soil could not compact at 20% contamination and above. Also, the coefficient of permeability increased with increase in the percentage of crude oil contamination while the coefficient of consolidation value (Cv) increases with increase in the percentage of contamination. There was a decrease in the cohesion value and the frictional angle due to the introduction of the crude oil into the soil. Although crude oil altered the geotechnical properties of the kaolinite clay soil and reduced its strength, the soil can still be used for geotechnical purposed after remediation.

A Phenomenological Inquiry: The Impact of the Process of Dietary Acculturation and the Nutritional Discourse in Canada on Female Immigrants with Type II diabetes

Katem, Eman January 2015 (has links)
Nutritional communication research helps with public health promotion, government dietary intervention and future outlooks for the dietetics profession. This research explores the way health professionals target niche population groups to educate on nutrition. The phenomenological methodology and the Communication Accommodation theory framework guided interviews with 10 Arab-speaking females diagnosed with type II diabetes or prediabetes. The findings reveal eight major underlying themes: language, socio-economic impact, level of integration/adaption to new environment, role of religion in life, health is a personal responsibility, role of family/specific family members, role of health professional and views on the Canadian food/culture. Ultimately, dietary acculturation of the sample group is influenced by level of English language proficiency, health literacy, exposure to health information and cultural values.

The Rise of the Far-Right Movement in Sweden : an Analysis of the Political Effects of an Increase in the Shre of Asylum Seekers.

Lindén, Linnéa January 2021 (has links)
This thesis investigates how a change in the municipal asylum seeker share affects voting for the Sweden Democrats (SD), a far-right anti-immigration party, in both national Parliament and Municipal Council elections in Sweden. To circumvent the endogeneity problem, I use an instrumental variables strategy where the share of available apartments in Allmännyttan is used as an instrument for the municipal share of asylum seekers living in Migration Agency provided accommodation (ABO). I have exploited municipal level panel data on municipality characteristics, allocations of asylum seekers and national elections. I am not able to find support for any effect of a change in the municipal share of asylum seekers on voting for the Sweden Democrats. Consequently, I cannot provide any support for either the group position theory or the contact hypothesis.

Nutritionsvård inom särskilt boende för äldre- distriktssköterskors erfarenheter

Granflo, Jessica January 2020 (has links)
Background: Risk of malnutrition and long night fasting for elderly people living in special housing is something that has been noted according to current research. The reason why the subject feels important to study further is that a night fast over 11 hours can be the first step to malnutrition. Malnutrition, in turn, can cause physical suffering and increases the risk of fall injuries, infections and severe wounds. Aim: The purpose of the study was to elucidate district nurses´ experiences of nutrition care in special housing for the elderly. Method: The study was conducted according to a qualitative inductive approach using semistructured interviews. Eight district nurses were interviewed. The data collection was analyzed based on a qualitative content analysis. Results: Analysis of the result generated three main categories and seven subcategories. Team collaboration plays an important role in the nursing work, both with regard to communication and the role of the district nurse. Management´s support or sometimes lack of support and organizational issues have an impact on how nutrition work is prioritized in the various health care professions. Participation includes both the elderly peolpe and the nursing staff. The person-centered care is reflected in how participation is utilized and used for a positive purpose. Conclusion: A well-functioning collaboration and good communication between all health care professionals involved is required to create good care for the elderly people and to avoid suffering in the form av malnutrition and long night fasting.
