Anti-Semitism and Israel Affiliation in the American Jewish Community: An Analysis of American Jewish Identity

abstract: Relevant literature was analyzed alongside interview data from participants concerning issues of anti-Semitism, Israel affiliation, and Jewish identity. Qualitative coding and theme identification were used to determine possible relationships among the variables, with special attention to the role anti-Semitism plays in influencing Israel affiliation. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 9 young American Jews (18-24) currently enrolled as undergraduate students in universities. The results revealed that continuity of the Jewish people is a core value for many American Jews. Anti-Semitism is often under reported by young American Jews, but for some anti-Israel sentiments are conflated with anti-Semitism. It was also observed that knowledge of anti-Semitism plays an integral role in shaping Jewish identity. Finally, it was found that Israel affiliation polarizes the Jewish community, often resulting in the exclusion of left-leaning Jews from the mainstream Jewish community. This work is focusing on questions of for-social behavior and altruism of nurses. For-social behavior is an important social phenomenon, such an antipole of non-provoked agresivity and probably of all other bad behavior (asocial, antisocial) . It is such behavior that keeps social bindings and that makes us closer one another. For-social behavior is characterized by acts done in favor of others without expectation of reward (financial, material) or social approval. In the first part of the diploma paper, there is outlined question of for-social behavior at theoretical level. Here is defined the term of for-social behavior, altruism, empathy with effort to answer the question why we help others, under what conditions, circumstances and to whom. The intention of this work consists in exploration-description of for-social behavior of nurses. The work deals with scale of empathy, altruism and affiliation of nurses in comparison with women non-working in helping professions. Furthermore, there is investigated the ability of nurses to cope with stress and that is measured by means of optimism scale. I did four hypotheses, all of which proved to be right. I used a method of questionnaire in terms of quantified research. Each hypothesis was based on its own separate questionnaire in question form. It was 200 question forms in total, 100 forms for nurses and the same for women non-working in helping professions as a control group. 174 filled forms were given back. The basic group was formed by 88 nurses and the control group by 86 non-nurses. The outcome of questionnaire research is that nurses show higher measure of empathy, altruism and affiliation than women non-working in helping professions. The nurses were also proved to be less adaptable to stress than non-nurses.

The effect of affiliation activities on drop-out, satisfaction, and performance in distance education

Students who are unable or unwilling to attend classes at an educational institution can often study at home through distance education programs. A consistently noted problem for students in these programs centres on the isolation experienced in such independent study. This sense of isolation may be one of the causes of the high drop-out rates common in distance education. The hypothesis of this study was that interaction with other students via telephone conferencing would decrease the drop-out rate, increase student satisfaction and improve academic performance. Twenty-nine students from a community college in British Columbia were involved in the study. They completed a questionnaire measuring the personality constructs "need for affiliation", "need for achievement" and "need for autonomy". They were randomly assigned to either the treatment or control group. Members of the treatment group participated in telephone conferences with the course instructor and three or four other students. Members of the control group received only individual telephone calls from the instructor. The completion rates of the two groups, measures of satisfaction and marks were compared. Only 2 of the 15 students in the treatment group dropped out while 7 of the 14 students in the control group failed to complete the course. The chi square with one degree of freedom was 4.55 significant at the .03 level. A Yates correction for continuity of curve, which was applied because of the small numbers, lowered the significance to .08. Differences in measures of student satisfaction were not statistically significant. For all students there was a moderate correlation between student achievement as measured by marks and need for affiliation, r=-.38, p=.10. However, when the correlation was computed for the treatment group only, r was -.11, p=.72, but for the control group only, the correlation was r=-.70, p=.08. This suggests that for the treatment group student-to-student interaction may have moderated the effect of the students' need for affiliation on student performance. The results indicate that student-to-student interaction may be beneficial to students in distance education courses and that need for affiliation may play a role in student success. Social cleavage and the party pie : the relationships between social heterogeneity and party systems in Canadian provinces

One of the purposes of political parties is to reduce a heterogeneous polity into a few political elements. This thesis determines if there is a relationship between political parties and social cleavages in Canada. I have used provincial election results and census data from 1956 to 1991. Electoral results are converted into two measures of party system size, the effective number of parties (the number of significant parties in a legislature) and the competitive number of parties (the number of relevant parties in an election). Social heterogeneity is measured by converting census data into a series of indexes that measure the ethnic, religious, and linguistic diversity. 1 also examine the affect of rural/urban and centre periphery cleavages in provincial politics. I have found that there is a significant relationship between social heterogeneity and party system size in Canada. Of the cleavage structure examined, ethnicity is positively correlated with party system size and the size of a province's rural population is negatively correlated with party system size. Curiously, religion and language have mixed affects; religion is positively correlated with the number of parties that get elected but negatively correlated with the number of parties that win seats. Similarly, the size of a provinces French speaking population has a positive relationship with the number of parties that win seats but a negative relationship with the vote distribution among parties. There are two important conclusions in this thesis. First, there is substantial evidence that social heterogeneity influences party systems size in Canadian provinces. This result challenges institutional explanations which suggest that party systems in polities that use plurality electoral systems which elect single members will not be affected by social diversity. My second conclusion is the identification of a largely untouched area of research on provincial party systems. European theorists have used social structural approaches for fifty years to explain how societies and political parties co-evolve. This study examines how segregation affects the Andersberg area in Gävle municipality,  while also examining the socio-economic conditions of people living in the area. Questions  answered in this study are the following: What does segregation look like in Andersberg?  How does segregation in Andersberg affect socio-economic conditions? The topic is  interesting to read because it informs about how segregation can affect the vulnerable areas,  and how the segregation affects the socio-economic conditions in the area is investigated. The target groups that the work focuses on were people living in the area aged 18. The report is based on responses from the survey we conducted, which was both voluntary and  anonymous. In the survey, we gave the respondents the option to answer freely and get  several questions instead of having specific answer alternatives. The report also discusses  several aspects that are relevant to segregation, such as income, origin, class, and form of  housing, we also compiled the results and discussed them in collaboration with various  theories. One of the conclusions we have reached is that Andersberg is greatly affected by segregation. An example of this is that a large part of the area's inhabitants earn less than the rest of the municipality's average income. In addition, we have concluded that only groups with a foreign background choose to settle in the area, which leads to a more segregated area with residents with weak resources. The second conclusion is that the socio-economic conditions for the residents living in Andersberg are affected by segregation in the area, for example, a large proportion of residents live on benefits and a lot earn between SEK 0–8000.

#Adopteevoices : En netnografisk studie om adopterades erfarenheter av utsatthet / #Adopteevoices : A netnographic study of adoptees experiences of exposure

The purpose of this study has been to explore which experiences of exposure transnational adoptees choses to tell about in their Instagram accounts and create an understanding for their experiences and thoughts with the help from theories and earlier research. We have by performing a netnografic study, found our empiric material from two transnational adoptees accounts on Instagram to answer our question formulations: Which experiences of exposure does transnational adoptees publish on Instagram? and: How does transnational adoptees explain the correlation between these experiences and their adoption? It appears in our empiric conclusion and in the analysis that themes of affiliation, indebtedness, racism, colour blindness and identity occur in both transnational adoptees account when it comes to exposure in relation to adoption. These experiences and thoughts are analysed with help from earlier research and theories. The theories we used are postcolonial perspective, stigma theory, intersectionality and social identity theory. In the discussion, conclusions are made about the analysis, where it among other things shows that experiences and thoughts of indebtedness appears to be a larger theme than in our selected earlier research. This phenomenon can be understood using the postcolonial theory, that gives a possible explanation about the occurrence of indebtedness. We discuss further about the relations between physical appearance, affiliation, and lack of racial reflection as how they appear to be distinctive factors for exposedness of the transnational adoptees in this study.

Sweden has become more and more multicultural where research indicate that several minority groups and people with a background other than European one, still experience stress about deviating from “the Swedish norm”. Previous research also shows that these people risk being subjected to special treatment, prejudice, and discrimination. The aim of this study is therefore to analyze the perceptions of second-generation immigrants about their social identity. To collect data, qualitative semi-structed interviews have been conducted with four respondents. The interviews have been analyzed using Goffman’s theory of Stigma and the results show that most respondents feel that their ethnicity and foreign background affect them in school. The results show that there is a certain degree of misunderstanding between ethnic Swedes and students with a foreign background. Furthermore, the respondents paint a gloomy picture about how their foreign descent has affected them in relation to how they develop in school and how their roles and identity are affected. The norms of being a Swedish is perceived as an ideal needed to succeed in Swedish society and for that reason it is disappointing to see how the exchange between the different ethnic seems to be small and the willingness to learn from other, is small from both groups.

Political Affiliations and Interagency Collaboration in Emergency Management in Nigeria

Collaboration has been indispensable in resolving many contemporary problems involved in emergency/disaster management, but it is unclear if key determinants of collaboration established through studies focused on the Western world would apply to countries outside the West. The purpose of this cross-sectional non-experimental study was to examine the effects of political affiliation, an established determinant, on collaboration among emergency management agencies (EMAs) in Nigeria. Barnes's theory of social network and Lévi-Strauss's theory of social exchanges framed the study. Survey data were collected from a sample of 38 EMAs out of the population of 812 EMAs; they were affiliated with 6 political parties in control of different jurisdictions between 2011 and 2015. Data were grouped into 2 categories based on the alignment of political affiliation of the agencies (same party vs. different parties). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and t-tests. Results suggested no significant difference in the perception of the strength of collaboration among the representatives of the EMAs who had similar political party alignment when compared with the perception of the strength of collaboration among EMAs who had different political party alignment (p = .15). Implications for positive social change include recommendations for government officials to focus on the other determinants of collaboration, that is, improving management techniques and making resources available regardless of political affiliation. These could ultimately contribute to making emergency management more effective and efficient, thereby reducing the adverse effects of emergencies and disasters on the citizenry.
