Family and society in Said Ahmed Mohamed's novels

Aiello Traoré, Flavia January 2008 (has links)
The depiction of family ties is one of the core elements of Swahili novels in Tanzania, especially in the post-Independence, socialist period, conveying all the contradictions of that social and cultural context. On one hand the representation of family relationships in terms of tense and aggressive behaviour (Mlacha 1987: 82) reflects the clashes of those years, between town and countryside, between genders and between different generations. On the other hand, the image of a new family - like for instance Chonya, Masika and her baby in Ndyanao Balisidya’s novel Shida (1975) - stands as a commitment to an alternative society, a dream of a better life inspired by Ujamaa which marked the Swahili prose of the 1970’s (Mbughuni 1980: 92). Said A. Mohamed, after his first novels which dealt with the colonial and pre-revolutionary past, turned his attention to contemporary society, but has continued to develop the idea of the family as a symbolic space where relationships between the characters articulate the inequalities and the conflicts within Zanzibari society. His literary discourse, as will become clear in the following pages, brilliantly investigates the deep roots and the countless facets of authoritarianism in contemporary Zanzibari society, depicting a gallery of fathers - in a biological and in a metaphorical sense – who are despotic, immoral, hypocritical, and increasingly cynical.

The "renovated" poetry of Theobald Mvungi and Said Ahmed Mohamed: on mechanisms of transformation of traditional Swahili verse

Frolova, Natalya S. January 2007 (has links)
Contemporary Swahili poetry is developing according to three main trends. The followers of the first trend - the so called "traditionalists" - stick to classic forms of old Swahili poetry. Following the Swahili canon of versification, traditionalists continue to be within the limits of two main genres of old Swahili literature - tendi (long poems) and mashairi (moderate lyrics and philosophical verses). In Swahili poetry foregoing sudden changes were marked by the appearance of a group of young authors on the poetic stage in the 1970s, who gave a dare to tradition. Their venture radically changed the character of Swahili literature, marking the appearance of the second trend of Swahili poetry, the \\\"new\\\" or \\\"modernistic\\\" poetry. But along with traditional and \\\"modernistic\\\" schools there exists a third trend of Swahili poetry - it is that sort of versification, which one may call \\\"transitional\\\". In general it looks lile pure \\\"modernism\\\", where at first sight one cannot see even the faintest resemblance with the traditional canon, but the more careful search makes it obvious that there is a true continuity between traditional and contemporary art. The best examples of such transformation are the poems of two prominent figures of contemporary Swahili poetry, the Tanzanians Theobald Mvungi and Said Ahmed Mohamed.

An interpretation of Said Ahmed Mohamed`s novel Kiza katika Nuru and some aspects of translation

Nocera, Pompea 14 August 2012 (has links)
This article presents an interpretation of Said Ahmed Mohamed`s forth novel Kiza katika Nuru (1988). My aim is to show that this novel is an engaging model of modern Swahili fiction, in which the author provides a very acute perception of the contemporary social and political realities in Tanzania. The article focuses on the plot and characters, and will wouch some aspects of language usage and problems of translation. The latter aspect is derived from my work experience in translation Kiza katika Nuru into Italian: Il buio nella luce (Nocera 2004).

Discovery of a Novel CCR5 Antagonist as an Effective Therapeutic Agent for Prostate Cancer

Ahmed, Tasrif 30 July 2010 (has links)
Previously, the CCR5 receptor was found to be a good target for treating prostate cancer (PCa). Dr. Yan Zhang’s laboratory designed several CCR5 antagonists, which were screened for their inhibitory effect on the growth and invasion of the M12, DU145 and PC-3 PCa cell lines. Primary in vitro screening showed one compound (Drug 17) significantly inhibited the proliferation of PCa cells at 1μM concentration, with a half-maximal inhibitory concentration of 237.68 nM. Further in vitro assays including a proliferation, cytotoxicity and invasion assay confirmed the inhibitory effect of drug 17. The physiological effect of drug 17 was tested by the Ware laboratory in vivo by subcutaneous injection of M12 cells into male, athymic nude mice. Tumor growth was slowed in mice receiving injections of drug 17 compared to sham injected controls. Thus, in vitro and in vivo assays suggest drug 17 might be an effective therapy to block PCa progression.

"Muskeljazz... stökigt, snabbt och svårt" : En kvalitativ undersökning av jazzmusikers erfarenheter av jazzkultur utifrån ett feministiskt, fenomenologiskt perspektiv

Öhman, Marcus January 2019 (has links)
This thesis explores how jazz musicians in Sweden experience jazz culture in terms of hierarchies and structures of power through a feminist phenomenological perspective. Through qualitative interviews with four jazz musicians with experience of attending different music colleges in Sweden, I explore their experiences of jazz culture in general, as well as specific contexts which are common within the culture. Using my theoretical approach, mainly consosting of the theories of Sara Ahmed and Iris Young, I review my informants´ possibilities to orientate themselves toward and within Swedish jazz culture. The informants all have different views of who holds the authority within the jazz culture. The study shows that male representation, masculine patterns of movement and structures of class differences has an impact on the informants possibilities to orientate themselves within the culture.

Under The Skin : An Ahmedian perspective on the participants' emotions of disgust and pain in Go Back To Where You Came From / Under skinnet : Ett Ahmediskt perspektiv på deltagarnas avsky och smärta i Flyktingar Åk Hem!

Gosser Duncan, Neil January 2013 (has links)
This essay argues that Sara Ahmed’s methodology for reading the emotionality of texts, through its focus on the relationships between emotions, language and bodies, can be applied to the emotional responses of Australians to refugees and asylum seekers. This essay specifically focuses on the emotions of disgust and pain in the participants of Go Back To Where You Came From, a three-part Australian documentary/realia TV series, because these two emotions’ preoccupation with surface and proximity provide a useful metaphor for what can be observed in the participants’ emotionality. Sensuous proximity in the form of sight, taste, smell, touch and hearing underlies the disgust experienced by the Go Back participants, while shared surfaces enable the participants to feel the pain of others. The essay concludes that Ahmed’s methodology is indeed an effective tool for analysing the emotions of people “affected” by the transnational movements of others.

Savoir Vivre Cosmopolite: Ahmed Midhat&#039 / s Avrupa Adab-i Muasereti Yahut Alafranga As A Source For The Modernization Of The Codes Of Social Behavior In The Late Nineteenth Century

Cekic, Can Eyup 01 September 2009 (has links) (PDF)
This study aims to reevaluate Ahmed Midhat&rsquo / s treatises on Ottoman society by revealing his exceptional objectives, which recently have been used in contemporary interdisciplinary studies concerning the 19th century Ottoman social transformation. In view of that, the thesis is formed as a re-reading of Ahmed Midhat&rsquo / s etiquette book, titled Avrupa Adab-i MuaSereti yahud Alafranga, according to some recent debates like that of occidentalism, geographic mapping of culture and civilization, the question of cosmopolitanism and elitism, everyday life practices. The most important aim of this thesis study is to expose the ability and the tool-kit of an Ottoman intellectual, who claims himself belong to the Ottoman Nation, making use of the knowledge of the west for domestic politics and arguments in order to propose and create a genuine, self-governing and permanent Ottoman culture. Besides the knowledge of the west, Ahmed Midhat&rsquo / s Alafranga represents a very significant literary form that demonstrates the modern change in the intellectual production in Europe. In that perspective, exposing his motivations behind writing an etiquette manual, a literary form which is related to the modern idea of creating a mechanism of self-control for the individuals, and at large for the society itself, is significant the ways in which these motivations represent the ideas of a Tanzimat intellectual on the modernization of the Ottoman society, considering his sympathy for the Hamidian worldview and modernization projects.

Experimental Investigation Of Flow Separation From Rigid Walls With Salient Edges

Akcali, Fikri 01 February 2004 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis presents the experimental results on the formation of flow separation from a rigid wall with a salient edge. In the case of automotive vehicles or aircrafts with rear cargo compartment doors, such salient edges are at the origin of separated wake flows resulting in increased drag and other disturbing effects. Recent studies of Ahmed et al. (1984) on simplified geometries showed the strong influence of the slant angle on the flow separations. In this study, the geometry is further simplified to examine the flow separation under two-dimensional conditions. The experimental configuration consists of a fixed horizontal front panel and an attached rear panel with variable slant angle. The experiments were carried out in a low speed water channel to analyze the flow structure by flow visualization techniques. The hydrogen bubble technique nd PIV measurements are used to obtain both qualitative and quantitative information on the flow structure. The electrolytic precipitation technique is used to analyze the flow separation in more detail. The slant angle varied between 0 and 35 degrees while the Reynolds numbers of the model was fixed to 24800 and 50500. As a function of slant angle and Reynolds number, two different types of flow separation were observed: boundary layer separation due to adverse pressure gradient and the so called &ldquo / inertial separation&rdquo / at the edge singularity. Future strategies to control the formation of the wake flow highly depend on the very different flow structure of these two types of separation.

Auktoritet i idyllen : Maskuliniteter i Carl Larssons fadersgestalt

Ribeiro, Maria January 2017 (has links)
This thesis investigates representations of masculinities and the father figure in the Swedish painter Carl Larsson’s (1864-1919) self-portraits from 1895. The paintings are analysed through the concepts authority, a term closely connected to the father figure, and idyll, a term often used to describe Larsson’s art. Sara Ahmed’s theory to see beyond what is taken for granted, in Queer Phenomenology, is theoretical starting point for the thesis. The analytical method is adopted from Tamar Garb’s Bodies of Modernity. Figures and Flesh in Fin-de-Siécle France. The conclusion is that the masculinities in Larssons’s father figure are coherent with the paterfamilias in the late 1900s, consisting of the provider, the authority figure, and the husband/lover. Furthermore, that the idyll is constructed by those with the authority to construct it, and that the authority thereby is defined by the idyll it constructs. Figures and Flesh in Fin-de-Siécle France.

Development of Innovative Load Transfer Mechanism to Reduce Hurricane-Induced Failures in New and Existing Residential Construction

Ahmed, Sheikh Saad 14 January 2010 (has links)
Implicit in current design practice of minimum uplift capacity, is the assumption that the connection's capacity is proportional to the number of fasteners per connection joint. This assumption may overestimate the capacity of joints by a factor of two or more and maybe the cause of connection failures in extreme wind events. The current research serves to modify the current practice by proposing a realistic relationship between the number of fasteners and the capacity of the joint. The research is also aimed at further development of non-intrusive continuous load path (CLP) connection system using Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) and epoxy. Suitable designs were developed for stud to top plate and gable end connections and tests were performed to evaluate the ultimate load, creep and fatigue behavior. The objective was to determine the performance of the connections under simulated sustained hurricane conditions. The performance of the new connections was satisfactory.
