Developing African art : innovation and tradition seen through the work of two artists; Lamidi Fakeye and Ahmed Shibrain

Nour, A. I. January 2006 (has links)
The dissertation explores the work of two African artists: Lamidi O. Fakeye a Yoruba wood carver, and Ahmed M. Shibrain a Sudanese painter, as an exemplary development within African art during the second half of the 20th century. It examines their works through the sense of "tradition" as it is seen within the context of their cultures and their histories. It considers their works to be a reflection of their time, a hybrid art and a new tradition emerging within their respective cultures as a result of change in their societies. It argues against the notion that separates their art from their traditions and their histories based on the artificial barriers of "authenticity" in the literature on African art and the various categories that are related to it. It ponders on the contradictions and complexity that this situation has created and demonstrated that these categories negate historical realities. The dissertation is in two parts. The first part describes and analyses some of Lamidi's Christian and secular carvings. His work is placed in its appropriate historical perspective by revealing its close relationship to the carvings of his predecessors in terms of themes, design, content and clients. Innovation and change in his work through time and space is revealed. In the second part, the dissertation defines the connectivity of Shibrain's work to his tradition and its history, and that of his fellow artists who contributed to the development of a new trend in Sudanese art. It discusses their work on the basis of the 'idea' of art in Islam, their training and their heritage of decorative art and Arabic calligraphy. It argues that innovation, influence, borrowing and adaptation, are part of progress in art through the ages.

Theologies Speak of Justice : A Study of Islamic and Christian Social Ethics

Callewaert, Teresa January 2017 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to investigate how religious ethics, while retaining its identity, can contribute to political debate and to the understanding of justice. The inquiry addresses these issues by focusing on theological perspectives which challenge the solutions offered to these questions by the liberal paradigm. Three kinds of challenges are studied, each of which is represented by one thinker from the Islamic tradition and one from the Christian tradition, in order to enable a comparative perspective on the contributions of religious traditions. The thinkers studied are: 1) modified liberalism, represented by Abdullahi Ahmed An-Na’im and Duncan B. Forrester; 2) liberationism, represented by Ali Shariati and Gustavo Gutierrez; and 3) radical traditionalism, as developed by Tariq Ramadan and John Milbank. The study is organized around three main questions. First, how can innovative interpretations of religious tradition be plausibly justified? Second, what role should religious arguments and reasons play in the political sphere? Third, what can religious ethics and theological thought contribute to the understanding of social justice? The questions are engaged by means of a critical and reconstructive engagement with the six thinkers. The suggested solutions are assessed in terms of the criteria of authenticity, communicability, and potential for transformation. It is argued that a religious ethic can rely on a tradition without accepting conservative understandings of that tradition. Furthermore, it is argued that the coherence of religious ethics can be made available for public discourse but that the hospitability of the public forum to such contributions needs to be realized through a deepened democratic culture and a critique of power structures which condition perceptions of rationality. While religious ethics do not articulate complete alternative understandings of justice, they articulate contributions by relating justice to human sociality and to transcendence.

Modélisation instationnaire de l'aérodynamique externe automobile / Unsteady computation of external aerodynamics flow in automotive industry

Delassaux, François 20 December 2018 (has links)
The main goal of this PhD is to develop an unsteady numerical method to study the external aerodynamic flow around real vehicles. The first part of the study focuses on the flow around simplified geometries, such as 25° Ahmed bodies (with sharp and rounded edges on the back of the body), in order to determine the optimal turbulence model, mesh setup and numerical parameters. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) results are compared to experimental data reported in literature conducted in the La Ferté Vidame wind tunnel. Based on this study, Shear-Stress Transport Delayed Detached Eddy Simulation (SST DDES) demonstrates superiority over Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS), Scale Adaptive Simulation (SAS) and Stress Blended Eddy Simulation (SBES) turbulence models, regarding both drag and lift coefficients predictions, and flow topology.Secondly, the numerical procedure is adapted for a real vehicle, the Peugeot 308 SW estate car. A substantial experimental campaign was carried out in the Groupement d’Intérêt Economique Souffleries Aéroacoustiques Automobiles (GIE S2A) wind tunnel to provide data against which the numerical results are compared. Given the geometric complexity of a real vehicle, the car is simplified for this study as follows: the front air inlets are closed, the underbody is smoothed with additional panels and the wheels are replaced by fairings. DDES computations show encouraging results. A significant improvement of the flow topology is obtained with DDES compared to RANS models. However, the prediction of the lift coefficient remains a major difficulty with these hybrid methods.

Translating a Swahili novel into `Kizungu`: Seperazione, the Italian edition of Said Ahmad Mohamed`s Utengano

Traoré, Flavia Aiello 14 August 2012 (has links) (PDF)
This article deals with the translation into Italian of the Swahili novel Utengano by Said Ahmad Mohamed, which was published in March 2005 under the title `Seperazione`by an Italian Publishing House, Rubbettino Editiore. Translation is a very important form of intercultural communication, which can provide contact with new readers, expected and unexpected ones. In the following pages I will decribe the main features of my translation of the novel Utengano, highlighting the main differences between the first version, that I produced as an appendix to the M.A. thesis, and the manuscript that I submitted to the publishing house.

Étude de la dispersion de nanoparticules dans le sillage d’obstacles : cas d’un véhicule automobile / Nanoparticles dispersion study in the wake of obstacles : case of a motor vehicle

Keita, Namamoudou Sidiki 17 December 2018 (has links)
In this thesis, the study of the interactions between ultrafine particles emitted by the exhaust pipes and the wake flow generated by the emitting vehicle was carried out mainly using a numerical approach. An experimental campaign was conducted for validation purpose. The goal of the thesis is to understand the impact of exhaust particles on the surrounding environment on both the pedestrian and the passengers of the following vehicles. For this purpose, the fluid flow was resolved with an Eulerian type URANS model (Unsteady Reynolds Average Navier-Stokes) combined to the Lagrangian approach for the nanoparticles trajectories calculation. This thesis is conducted simultaneously with a collaborative project funded by ADEME (CAPTIHV) whose purpose is to assess the air quality of automotive car cabins, and particulate infiltration from the surrounding traffic in particular of ultrafine particles. The study of the dispersion of fine particles in turbulent flows requires a fine analysis of the turbulent structures that develop in such flows. Our numerical study therefore consisted, first, in analyzing this dispersion in the case of a classic wake flow downstream of a cylinder. This enabled us to characterize the interaction of solid carbon nanoparticles with vortical structures evaluating at the same time the impact of turbulence and Brownian diffusion. This allowed determining the influence of the main mechanisms influencing nanoparticles dispersion. In a second step, we replaced the cylinder configuration by a simplified geometry of a motor vehicle, Ahmed body configuration. Therefore, simulations with and without of particles presence have been conducted and have allowed to highlight the swirls structures and to characterize the particles dispersion through particle concentration profiles and the particles dispersion coefficients. The results of these simulations allowed us determining the important mechanisms / forces that can influence the dispersion of such particles in the wake of a ground vehicle; this facilitated the implementation and analysis of relatively more complex simulations of the aerodynamics of the square back Ahmed body in the presence of nanoparticles simulating soot from the exhaust gases. The interactions of ultrafine particles with vortical structures appearing in the wake of vehicles were evaluated from concentration profiles and transverse dispersion coefficients. The final step was a wind tunnel experimental campaign that allowed us to characterize the average and turbulent velocity fields as well as the particle concentration fields downstream of the vehicle to validate the numerical results

How do you become a successful beggar in Sweden? : an inquiry into the images of begging and giving 2011 to 2016

Parsberg, Cecilia January 2016 (has links)
My first encounter with a begging person led me to spend five years investigating the new situation regarding begging and giving in Sweden. The premise is that every-day actions and reactions to another person can be made visible through aesthetics with ethical underpinnings. My investigation takes place mainly in the urban landscape and in the media. The images always constitute the point of departure for the reasoning and for the staged works. Images that separate as well as connect bodies. Which images are at play in the social choreography of begging and giving? In this context, how can images be activated in new ways? How can new images be generated? Begging is a call to social interaction, and regardless of whether the giver interacts socially with the begging person on the street, the giver is implicated in the asymmetrical value systems of the European Union. In my first staged work I hire a professional market researcher to find out how a beggar in Sweden should behave to be successful. This becomes a film that I then show opposite another film in which begging people talk about how givers give. This is followed by a number of staged works and an interdisciplinary theoretical discussion involving, among others, Judith Butler, Sara Ahmed, and Hannah Arendt, as well as a number of artistic works concerning how images – and bodily actions – are linked to the social image and the body politics. The arrangement of the choirs in the staged work The Chorus of Begging and The Chorus of Giving, indicates a space for social interaction and thus demonstrates a different order that demands different actions in terms of language, movement, and attitude toward each other. It’s a social choreography: when the choirs rehearsed and sung together a political form emerged. My hope is to make visible a space for action between the begging and the giving that can be used for continued ethical negotiations and new staged works.
