Online giving and university development

This study examined the profile of the potential online donor to a small, private, liberal arts institution. Attitudes towards online giving were studied between participants who donated online and those who did not. Additionally respondents of differing class years were compared to determine which age groups were more likely to donate over the Internet. A total of 576 surveys were returned for an effective response rate of 38%. Collected data were entered into an SPSS database. The data revealed most respondents had been using the Internet for over 5 years, and accessed the Internet almost everyday. Data also revealed that most respondents accessed the Internet from their homes or offices and own two e-mail addresses. Through data analysis, it was discovered that a small percentage of respondents currently donated to other nonprofits over the Internet. However, the majority of respondents were unsure about online giving and its role in the philanthropic process. Additionally, respondents' attitudes towards online giving did not differ between class years. Respondents' preferred method of communication was through the mail, however, the majority of respondents reported they would be willing to receive monthly e-mail communications from the institution. Conclusions and recommendations included that credit card security and information privacy were viewed as very important to donors if they were to donate over the Internet. In addition, it was concluded that donors who made financial transactions over the Internet were more likely to make a charitable contribution over the Internet. Recommendations included the institution should begin the process of educating their alumni as to the benefits of online giving, and integrate online giving into their comprehensive fundraising process.

A study of the membership of the national FFA alumni association: volunteering, loyalty, and benefits

Harbstreit / There has been little research conducted related to the National FFA Alumni Association since its establishment in 1971. The purposes of this study were to determine the demographic characteristics of the membership of the National FFA Alumni Association, determine whether differences exist regarding members’ motivation to join and engage themselves in the local FFA Alumni affiliate, and whether differences exist in members’ loyalty to the FFA Alumni at the national and local levels based on their level of engagement. This descriptive study utilized survey research to accomplish the purpose, assessing the motivational functions for volunteering and measuring loyalty to the local FFA Alumni affiliate and the National FFA Alumni Association. The population of this study was the membership of the National FFA Alumni Association for the 2009-2010 membership year (N = 49,589). A proportional stratified random sample (n = 1,000) was used to identify study participants and ensure representation from the four membership regions of the National FFA Alumni Association. Based on a final usable sample (n = 913), the researcher obtained a final response rate of 43.7% (n = 399). The National FFA Alumni Association is comprised of predominantly white, male, college-educated, actively engaged former FFA members with an average age of 49.6 years. The results of independent sample t-tests indicated a significant difference between male and female members in the importance they place on six motivations for volunteering. Female members were considerably higher in the motivational functions of values, understanding, enhancement, social, career, and protective. A correlation analysis also indicated that age of the respondents played a role in the motivation to volunteer. Older members were less motivated in the areas of career, understanding, values, and enhancement. Paired samples t-tests determined members were significantly more loyal to the local FFA Alumni affiliate than the National FFA Alumni Association. There was also a significant difference in the loyalty of members based on their level of engagement with a local FFA Alumni affiliate with more highly engaged members expressing more loyalty to the association.

Exploring inter-organizational relationships in historically black colleges and universities: cooperation, coordination, and collaboration

The continued threat to historically black college and universities (HBCU) survival, due to the lack of resources they need to operate and compete, is at the forefront of concerns for many HBCU presidents and supporters. Research suggests that to have success in acquiring more resources, universities will need to work with their alumni associations and foundations. The purpose of this qualitative, multi-case study was to contribute to the limited research on the relationships among HBCU leaders responsible for growing resources. Numerous aspects contribute to increasing alumni giving and this study will contribute to that knowledge. The discussion of inter-organizational relationships and how the processes of cooperation, coordination, and collaboration transpire should be a part of the dialogue. Exploration of these relationships and processes can highlight possible solutions and deficiencies in the success of institutional advancement. Sites for this study were purposefully selected to examine these inter-organizational relationships. Data included in-depth interviews and related documents and artifacts. Thirty patterns and three themes emerged from the data analysis. The three themes include an understanding that (a) “working together” enacts cooperation, coordination, and collaboration; (b) human capital and organizational structures affect coordination and the ability to reach goals; and (c) the goal for increased resource capacity focuses the efforts of cooperation, coordination, and collaboration. This study extends the discussion to looking at inter-organizational relationships as another perspective to enhance resources. This investigation also introduces dialogue about alumni association and foundation volunteerism as an important component in developing effective solutions. The understandings portrayed in the identified themes will help university officials, practitioners, advancement volunteers, and supporters of higher education enhance their institutional advancement strategies and help set forth norms for productive behaviors.

A model of donor behavior for law school alumni.

Past higher education fund-raising studies examining alumni giving across several institutions have had two main limitations. First, the multitude of independent variables used in these studies has made it difficult to determine whether past studies have discovered many different factors that influence levels of alumni gift revenue, or whether they have discovered a few common factors that have been represented by different sets of variables in each study. Second, past studies have failed to adequately describe causal mechanisms through which variables significantly related to gift revenue influence levels of gift revenue. The current study addresses the aforementioned limitations in creating an aggregate model of donor behavior for law school alumni. The study examines alumni giving at 41 ABA-approved law schools. The results indicate that four basic factors account for most (87 percent) of the variance in amounts of alumni annual fund revenue among different law schools. The four factors, listed in order of importance and shown with the variables that load highly on each factor, are the following: Factor l--"Institutional Quality" (variables are average LSAT scores of accepted law students; reputation of law school among professors at other law schools; reputation of law school's graduates among judges and practicing lawyers; average starting salaries of new graduates of the law school; total number of volumes in law library; number of volumes in law library divided by FTE enrollment;). Factor 2--"Institutional Size" (variables are: FTE law school enrollment; number of living law school alumni; number of FTE law faculty; total number of law school advancement staff people). Factor 3--"Relative Advancement Effort" (variables are: number of law school advancement staff people divided by number of living law school alumni; number of law school reunion classes solicited for special gifts each year). Factor 4--"Institutional Age" (variables are: age of law school; age of law school's parent institution). Differences between the factor structures for public and private law schools are examined. The study suggests possible causal mechanisms through which these four factors influence the amount of alumni gift revenue raised by each law school.

Employment Status and Job Satisfaction of Clothing and Textiles Graduates from 1969 to 1978

The purposes of this study were to determine the employment status of North Texas State University clothing and textiles majors who graduated between 1969 and 1978 and to provide a measurement of their job satisfaction. The data were gathered through two mailed questionnaires, a general one developed by the researcher, and the Job Descriptive Index, a standardized job satisfaction index. Graduates in clothing and textiles tended to seek and obtain employment related to their major field of study, and they are generally satisfied with their jobs. Factors tested statistically in this study included age, marital status, parental status, salary, tenure, and organization size. No significant differences in job satisfaction or employment tatus were evident relative to any of these factors.

The problem of this study was to obtain the professional opinion of male physical education graduates of North Texas State University with respect to appropriateness of their professional preparation in association with their teaching experiences. An opinionated questionnaire was developed and used to collect the data. Standard and Advanced First Aid and Safety Education, Teaching Physical Education in Secondary Schools and Foundations of Health were the required courses found to be most valuable to the participants in their teaching experiences. Basketball, track and field, football and volleyball were the activities most often used by the participants in their teaching activities.

Avaliação de programas de doutorado em Administração sob a perspectiva dos egressos / Evaluation of doctoral programs in business administration according alumni\'s perspective

Com a expansão do sistema educacional, em especial do ensino superior no Brasil, intensificou-se a preocupação com a qualidade das instituições educacionais. A pesquisa sobre egressos (ex-alunos) é considerada um dos importantes meios para informar sobre a qualidade institucional e demonstrar os impactos gerados na sociedade. Apesar disso, é observado que as instituições brasileiras raramente utilizam os egressos como fonte de informações para os cursos, e quando captam informações, não as utilizam eficazmente para a melhoria da qualidade educacional. Nesse contexto, esta Tese tem como pergunta de pesquisa: Que indicadores podem subsidiar a avaliação, sob a perspectiva dos egressos, como ferramenta para o aperfeiçoamento dos Programas de Pós-Graduação Stricto Sensu? Para tanto, a pesquisa foi desenvolvida em duas etapas: (a) proposição teórica das dimensões e dos indicadores para Avaliação de Programas de Doutorado em Administração, sob a perspectiva dos egressos; e (b) aplicação desse conjunto de indicadores, junto a uma amostra de egressos, por intermédio de um e-survey, para Avaliação de um Programa de Doutorado em Administração. Os resultados propõem a classificação dos indicadores em três dimensões: (1) Avaliação das Repercussões (mensuração das mudanças ocorridas no nível individual em função de uma determinada intervenção educacional); (2) Avaliação do Relacionamento (análise do nível de participação, envolvimento e engajamento dos alunos e dos egressos na vida da Instituição/Programa) e (3) Avaliação da Qualidade dos Serviços (visão dos egressos sobre a estrutura e os serviços prestados pela Instituição/Programa de formação). A aplicação e validação do conjunto de indicadores, em uma amostra de 141 egressos, mostraram serem válidos e consistentes os instrumentos utilizados e as dimensões propostas, permitindo chegar a constatações com relação às repercussões, ao relacionamento e ao nível de qualidade do Programa de Doutorado avaliado. Nesse sentido, a principal contribuição desta pesquisa reside na proposição das dimensões e indicadores para avaliação de Programas de Doutorado em Administração, a partir da visão dos egressos, que podem ser ratificadas em futuras pesquisas, com replicação dessas dimensões e dos indicadores em Programas de diferentes instituições ou áreas / With the expansion of the educational system, especially higher education in Brazil, concerns about the quality of educational institutions were intensified. Research on graduates (alumni) is considered one of the main sources to inform about the educational quality and to demonstrate the impacts on society. Nevertheless, it is observed that Brazilian institutions rarely consider alumni as a source of information for their courses, and when these institutions capture information, they do not apply them effectively for improving the educational quality. In this context, this Thesis presents the following research question: What indicators can support the evaluation, from alumni\'s perspective, as a tool for improvement of Graduate Stricto Sensu Programs? Therefore, the study was conducted in two stages: (a) theoretical proposition of dimensions and indicators for evaluation of Doctoral Programs in Business Administration, according alumni\'s perspective; and (b) application of this set of indicators in a sample of graduates, through an e-survey, for evaluation of a Doctoral Program in Business Administration. The results suggest the classification of indicators in three dimensions: (1) Impact Evaluation (measurement of changes at the individual level in terms of a particular educational intervention); (2) Relationship Evaluation (analysis of the level of participation, involvement and engagement of students and graduates in the Institution/Program life) and (3) Services Quality Evaluation (the alumni insight into the structure and the services provided by the institution / training program). The application and validation of the set of indicators, in a sample of 141 graduates, showed that the tools used and the proposed dimensions are valid and consistent, allowing reach findings regarding the impact, the relationship and the quality level of the evaluated Doctoral Program. In this sense, the main contribution of this research is the proposition of dimensions and indicators for evaluation of Doctoral programs in Business Administration, from the alumni\'s perspective, which can be ratified in future researches, with replication of these dimensions and indicators in programs of different institutions or areas.

The significant presence of women in the course is evident from the time of enrollment in the selection process until its conclusion, which reflects the expression of strong female presence in the clothing industry. One of our goals is to reflect on the view that the corresponding diploma of the course would be the guarantee of getting a job, without any mediation. At CEFET School, a student must attend the courses and traineeship to obtain certification as a technical level. The diploma would facilitate the acquisition or guarantee of employment? This is one of the focuses of our research. The future projections of the student of daytime have continuity in their school career and night school student, in turn, does not always prioritize continuity, preferring to enter the job market. One who is already inserted in the job market demands better qualifications. For analysis, data concerning the professional careers of the interviewees were collected. The selection of the eleven former students was defined from the criterion of being inserted in the job market. The main result obtained with the analysis of the data refers to discrepancies between training and jobs done, because knowledge of the entire production process is not seized / Esta dissertação de mestrado aborda as relações entre formação profissional e a inserção no mercado de emprego de um grupo de egressas do curso técnico em vestuário do Cefet-MG, de 2002 a 2008. A significativa presença das mulheres no curso se manifesta desde o momento da inscrição no processo seletivo até a sua conclusão, o que reflete a expressão da forte presença feminina na indústria do vestuário. Um dos nossos objetivos é refletir sobre a visão de que o correspondente diploma de conclusão do curso garantiria a obtenção de emprego, sem quaisquer mediações. No CEFET-MG, o aluno precisa cursar as disciplinas e o estágio curricular para obter a certificação como técnico de nível médio. O diploma garantia ou facilitaria a obtenção de emprego? Esse é um dos focos da nossa pesquisa. O aluno do curso diurno possui projeções futuras de continuidade em sua trajetória escolar e o aluno do curso noturno, por sua vez, nem sempre prioriza a continuidade, preferindo a inserção no curto prazo no mercado de emprego. Aquele que já está inserido procura melhor qualificação. Para a análise foram coletados dados relativos às trajetórias profissionais das entrevistadas. A seleção das onze egressas foi definida a partir do critério de estarem inseridas no mercado de emprego. O principal resultado obtido com a análise dos dados se refere às dissonâncias entre formação profissional e o emprego realizado, pois o conhecimento de todo o processo produtivo não é apreendido
