La France face aux Deux-Siciles (1734-1792) : les impasses de la grandeur / France Faced with the Two Sicilies (1734-1792) : the Limits of Greatness

La présente étude trouve son point de départ dans le sentiment de malaise et de déception que la France éprouve vis-à-vis des Deux-Siciles entre 1734 et 1792, alors qu’un Bourbon, cousin du roi de France, est roi des Deux-Siciles. En effet, malgré sa puissance, la France ne parvient guère à s’imposer face aux Deux-Siciles, ni sur la scène politique européenne, ni à un niveau plus local, méditerranéen, côtier, où se jouent des intérêts économiques assez mineurs pour les Français. Cette thèse, qui étudie les relations entre la France et les Deux-Siciles du seul point de vue de la France, vise en premier lieu, à travers un parcours chronologique initial, à retracer les conflits et à faire apparaître les pierres d’achoppement qui attestent la difficulté et la dégradation de la relation bilatérale, qui expliquent le mélange de déception et d’irritation ressenti et qui mettent en même temps sur la piste des erreurs d’appréciation commises par les serviteurs du roi de France. Se plaçant, précisément, du point de vue de ces acteurs, l’étude a ensuite pour ambition de saisir ces erreurs d’appréciation, et donc de montrer comment la prétendue victime est, à bien des égards, l’auteur de son propre malheur : comment, en d’autres termes, le tour pris par les relations entre la France et les Deux-Siciles renvoie, à un niveau plus profond que celui des événements, à un constant défaut de lecture des réalités napolitaines et siciliennes. Ce constat établi, il s’agit, enfin, de comprendre pourquoi le roi de France, qui dispose pourtant de représentants nombreux, n’est pas en mesure de parvenir à une meilleure appréciation de la situation et donc à une action plus profitable et plus incisive sur ce partenaire a priori plus faible que lui. / The starting point of this thesis is the sense of discomfort and disappointment that France feels vis-à-vis the Two Sicilies between 1734 and 1792 when a Bourbon king, a cousin of the king of France, rules the Two Sicilies. Despite its power, France is unable to assert itself over the Two Sicilies on the European stage or at a local scale, that is on the coast, where French economic interests are rather low. The purpose of this thesis is to study the relationship between France and the Two Sicilies from the French point of view. First, conflicts and stumbling blocks are presented in chronological order. This analysis shows the difficulties and the deterioration of the bilateral relationship, that explain French disappointment and annoyance and that put us on the track of misconceptions prevalent among many French king’s servants. Then the study focuses on these misconceptions and shows how the alleged victim is the author of his own misfortune. In other words it shows how beyond all the incidents, France fails to understand Neapolitan and Sicilian realities. After that, this study investigates the reasons why the French king and his many representatives are unable to improve the knowledge of the situation and therefore to carry out an appropriate policy.

Raising the pillar in the "house of fiction" : a study of the processes of development and change in the central characters of two novels of Henry James: The portrait of a lady and The ambassadors.

The thesis focuses on a variation of James's interest in the "international theme", the effect of transatlantic influences on the development of personality, culture and idea. In the context of this theme it seeks to understand the processes in the development of, and portrayal of change in, the identities of two central characters in the fiction of Henry James, Isabel Archer and Lambert Strether. The two novels analysed, The Portrait of a Lady and The Ambassadors. have a strong contextual relevance to the ''international theme", and compass the span of James's career, providing some degrees of comparison. Beginning with a view of the preliminary vision that James had of the main elements of each central character, the thesis seeks to understand how Isabel Archer and Lambert Strether are subsequently shaped, and developed, by way of the incidents and experiences they meet, and what they make of them. To study the focalization, this research will explore notably The rhetoric of fiction, by Wayne C. Booth (1983), Discurso da narrativa, by Gérard Genette (1995) and Teoría de la narrativa, by Mieke Bal (2001). Si Catherine de Médicis a fait l’objet d’une attention jamais démentie de la part des historiens, aucune recherche n’a jamais été menée sur un aspect pourtant central de son action politique : la diplomatie. Or, elle a abondamment écrit entre l’avènement de François II le 10 juillet 1559 et sa propre mort le 5 janvier 1589 : il reste aujourd’hui 5 958 lettres d’une correspondance dont le rythme n’a jamais réellement fléchi pendant ces trois décennies. La part extérieure encore conservée représente quant à elle 2 454 pièces et forme une source centrale pour comprendre la politique étrangère menée par la reine mère. Toutefois, dans le cadre de cette étude, les dépêches de Catherine de Médicis aux résidents français ainsi que les réponses qu’elle reçoit d’eux ont surtout été abordées comme un objet d’histoire plus encore que comme un témoignage des négociations diplomatiques. L’intérêt s’est donc porté sur l’épistolarité comme moyen de gouvernement à une époque où l’éloignement entre les acteurs fait de la lettre, qui dans le domaine diplomatique prend le nom de dépêche, le seul lien qui les unit. / Historians have always been interested by Catherine de Medici but no research has even been produced on a central aspect of her action: diplomacy. Yet, she has written an enormous amount of letters from the accession to the throne of her son François II in 1559 to her own death in 1589 and we still have 5 958 letters from a correspondence that has never weakened during three decades. Among them, we can find 2 454 foreign letters, that forms a central object to understand the foreign policy decided by the Queen Mother. Yet, during this work, the letters written by Catherine de Medici to the French ambassadors and the replies she received from them has mainly been considered as an historical object more than a testimony of diplomatic negotiations. Therefore, the interest has been focused on epistolarity as a means of government in a time when distance between actors makes the letter to be the only link between them.

The perfect job : a study of the relationship between employer branding and person organization fit

This research thesis has researched about how employer branding and its relationship to person - organization fit. It focuses on personality traits of applicants and how it can impact their attractiveness of the organization advertised in job adverts. The purpose of this research thesis is to explain what relationship employer branding via job advertisements has when it comes to establishing P - O fit. In this case between future business students and organizations. The thesis had a deductive approach a cross - sectional research design was applied. A quantitative research method (logistic regression) was used and came from primary data. The research findings show that employer branding has a positive relationship to creating attractiveness of firms and also has an impact upon person-organization fit. Our findings also indicated that personality characteristics is hard to categorize in order to see what specifically in employer value proposition can attract a specific employee preference. The limitations were the number of respondents, a larger sample unit could have impacted the results more. Also, using a qualitative method in terms of semiotics could give a more detailed output on respondents’ personality traits. The original value of the research thesis is that it focused specifically on business students and to what degree employer value proposition is related to person-organization fit.

Diplomats and diplomacy: assessing the influence of experience in the implementation of U.S. foreign policy

Pickering / In 2008, Ambassador’s Neumann and Pickering wrote letters to Senator’s Obama and McCain, with recommendations on qualifications for US Ambassador’s. Both Senator’s had recently received their party’s nomination for President, and Neumann and Pickering took the opportunity to suggest qualifications they believed were necessary for US ambassadors to perform their diplomatic tasks better. Their letters suggested that career ambassadors perform better, and they recommended that political appointees be limited to ten percent. The historical average has been roughly thirty percent. They also recommended that ambassadors have previous regional experience, and be knowledgeable about the countries in which they would be assigned, as well as speak the local language. What their letters were missing was evidence these traits actually make a difference in how well ambassadors perform their roles. In fact, this evidence is missing from the extant literature describing ambassadorial roles and responsibilities. This dissertation seeks to quantitatively and qualitatively analyze Neumann’s and Pickering’s qualifications, marking the first time this important subject has been examined using social science methodology.

Syftet med denna studie var att genom ett medarbetarperspektiv få en fördjupad förståelse för konceptet arbetsgivarvarumärke och vad som uppfattas attraktivt i ett varuproducerande företag på landsbygden. För att uppnå syftet har ett kvalitativt metodval med semistrukturerade intervjuer använts som datainsamlingsmetod. Intervjuerna har skett med både tjänstemän och kollektivanställda. Dessutom användes företagets medarbetarenkäter för att generera ett rikare datamaterial. Studien bidrar till förståelsen att arbetsgivarvarumärkeskonceptet kan användas i ett varuproducerande företag på landsbygden. Resultatet visar att företaget är unikt genom att de är en av få arbetsgivare på orten samt att de erbjuder branschunika arbetstider. Vidare visar resultatet att företaget är attraktivt av anledning att de erbjuder trygga anställningsförhållanden i en trivsam och säker arbetsmiljö. Dessutom erbjuds utvecklings- och karriärmöjligheter, tillfredställande kollegiala relationer och en familjär atmosfär. Resultatet visar även att arbetslivsbalansen och relationen till chefen är attribut som värderas, trots att dessa inte nämndes spontant av respondenterna. Studiens resultat påvisar även en skillnad mot tidigare forskning, att förmåner i form av lön inte har någon större påverkan på attraktiviteten så länge de basala behoven tillfredsställs. / The purpose of this study was to gain a deeper understanding of the concept of employer brand and what is perceived as attractive in a manufacturing company in the countryside through an employee perspective. To achieve the purpose, a qualitative method choice with semistructured interviews has been used as a data collection method, where the interviews have been conducted with both chiefs and coworkers. In addition, the company's employee surveys generated a richer data material. The study contributes to the understanding that the employer brand concept can be used in a manufacturing company on the countryside. The result shows that the company is unique because it is one of few employers in the area and that they also have unique working hours. Furthermore, the company is attractive because of the secure employment conditions in a pleasant and safe work environment. In addition, the employer offers development and career opportunities, satisfactory relationship between colleagues and a familiar atmosphere. The results also show that the work life balance and relationship with the manager are attributes that are valued, even though these were not spontaneously mentioned by the respondents. This study also displays a distinction towards previous research that benefits in the form of pay have no major impact on attractiveness as long the basic needs are satisfied.
