Documentation Of Architecture: Photography As An Objective Tool?

Coskun, Esatcan 01 December 2009 (has links) (PDF)
Since its invention, photography has been accepted as a reliable tool for achitecture in terms of its power for creating objective documents of the built-form. The aim of this study, is to question the so-called objectivity and reliability of the photographic representations of the buildings by showing how architectural photography emerges also with an artistic and purely aesthetic character rather than being a mere tool of objective documentation. Taking this formal emphasis on architectural subject as a basis, a broader focus will be given to the photogenic character of the images used in architectural publications. Instead of reflecting real spatial experience, these idealized photographs are used in a given context to constitute a fiction that alters the viewer&#039 / s understanding of the architectural subject. Therefore, the main question is not whether architectural photography is an objective tool of documentation which is capable to represent architecture as it really is or it is a category of purely artistic activity / it is about how photography alters our vision about architecture and constructs new ideas for architectural discourse. By taking Tabanlioglu Architects&#039 / Dogan Media Center building in Ankara as a key study, this thesis aims to focus this alteration and question the potentials of architectural photography.

&quot / reconstructing&quot / The Ottoman Imperial Harem Of The Nineteenth Century: Memoirs Of Leyla Saz On The Old Ciragan Palace

Gunsoy, Harika Belkis 01 February 2012 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis aims to explore the Ottoman Imperial Harem in the second half of the nineteenth century by focusing on the memoirs of Leyla Saz, a well-known poet and musician (1850-1936). Belonging to an aristocratic family, Leyla Saz was admitted to the &Ccedil / iragan Palace at the age of four as Fatma Sultane&rsquo / s, (daughter of Abd&uuml / lmecid) maid of honour and witnessed closely the daily life in the Harem for more than twenty years. Her memoirs, dating 1920, are the earliest examples written by a court member or, in other words, by an insider. They are particularly important for documenting not only the Imperial Harem as a disappeared socio-cultural institution, but also its architectural setting as part of the Old &Ccedil / iragan Palace, built in 1841 but demolished in 1857. Accordingly, this thesis seeks to reconstruct the Old Palace and its Harem architecturally and culturally by reading these memoirs in parallel to the related historical and theoretical literature. In so doing, it discusses whether the memoirs perpetuate or challenge the orientalist discourses.

The evaluation of applicability to urban sustainable indicators-a case study of Kaohsiung

Hsieh, Cheng-Hsun 11 September 2002 (has links)
Abstract With the growing trend of urbanization in the world, subjects of the sustainable urban development keep gaining increasing attentions, and researches about indicators of the sustainable urban development also become conspicuous discussions. Nevertheless, recent decades there were still fewer researches referring to construct indicators of sustainable urban development applying the concept of single city. On the important dimensions of discussing sustainable urban development, we should emphasize both on whether a city grows towards the sustainable trend and monitoring the development process of a city. Decision authority, monitoring the situations of the sustainable urban development, should design the indicator groups of a city in accordance with its particular historical background, geographical conditions, character of existing pattern, and topics people concerned. The analysis framework of this research broadly includes the aspects as follow¡G the natural environment of urban hardware, and the socio-economy and culture of urban software. An empirical study of Kaohsiung City was performed to illustrate the analysis procedures of the entire research process. Recognizing the growing environmental damage and population density increase in Kaohsiung city, actually decision authority need to outline the guidance of strategies or decisions with regard to monitoring the indicators of sustainable development. Using a case study of Kaohsiung, we adopt the indicator groups of measuring urban sustainability in¡§An Assessment System for Sustainable Taiwan¡¨as foundation , expect developing sustainable development indicators for Kaohsiung¡¦s version. Referring to noted assessment systems for sustainable city, this paper established an initial assessment system for sustainable urban indicators dividing into four aspects as follow: product, living, survival, ecology, with regard to aggregating environmental, economic, social, cultural discussions, and et al. Through a survey of expert questionnaire in Delphi method, this paper compiles the recognition and opinions from the experts of different background and the officials of government department, then modifies 31 suitable indicator items to assess Kaohsiung¡¦s sustainability. Tracking whether a city developed towards sustainability to provide references for government¡¦s policy making in the future, we employ statistic numeral data government published from year 1996 to year 2001 for time-series analysis and examine the results of constructing a sustainable city on developmental expense government offered in Kaohsiung city. The goal of this research is through suitability evaluating of an assessment system for sustainable indicators to develop an indicator system with place characteristics according to telling the developmental setting and monitored dimension of a city easier and clearer, and finally fitting the input of substance expense from government for constructing a sustainable city.

Chang, Kuei-chen 29 July 2008 (has links)
Village chiefs¡¦ role has been facing great impact and challenge ever since the transition of society, development of information, raise of education level and popularity of communitarianism. Therefore, how village chiefs¡¦ legal position should be set and integrate with village officers as well as community development have been brought into discussion in recent years. While gaps do exist between current academic study and practical operation, this study centers on village chiefs¡¦ position with the case of An-Shun Li of Kaohsiung City for further study. The exploration of literature is divided into three parts: role theory, village chiefs¡¦ position and village systems, and the relationship between village chiefs and community development. Literature review, in-depth interview, and participants¡¦ observation are adopted as research methods. With the concept of status, role expectation, role conflict and role performance in role theory, the study explores the interaction between village chiefs and other connecting village officers, analyzes the problems that chiefs¡¦ encounter under current legal system and then generalizes the role current chiefs should play. The research finds that the biggest difference between current and traditional chiefs is that the role they play as citizens¡¦ participation navigators and community development managers. While government is examining and adjusting village controlling area and government-assigned chief policy, it is advised that concrete solution to be proposed for individual cases which require specific environment. The regulation of village chiefs is wished to become better in the future. A new organization is looking forward to be setting up as a mediator between village chief and community development organization to deal with community affairs, thus to make the local system in line with modern society demands.

A Study of Social Judgement Theory for Conflict Management : Case of CPC Yung-An LNG Receiving Terminal

Pan, Cheng-chang 01 September 2008 (has links)
¡@Because the public take account of ecological and environmental protection, there are many conflicts between the public and constructors to trigger many obstacles and duels in construction of many infrastructures. Thus, tradeoff between environment, lives, property and economic benefits is a big problem. In the researches of plural public affairs decision making and cognition impact management problems, practical researches found that Hammond(1965, 1975, 1996) developed SJT(Social Judgement Theory) from Lens model and had significant effects and contributions for analysis of public affairs decision making. The thesis uses SJT and studies cognition conflict management on representative case of environmental protection ¡¥the construction of CPC Yung-An LNG¡¦ in Taiwan. ¡@CPC Yung-An LNG began construction in May in 1984. Because environmental consciousness rose, the public gave relief to themselves when encountering environmental pollution. Negligence of communication with the village and of good-neighborliness makes the village not make allow and trigger Yung-An village dueled. This study bases on economic environment, gathers relative literatures and presents four controversial and representative topic for decision variables. They are individually ¡¥X1(benefit of construction of the firm)¡¦ and ¡¥X2(subsidies for the residents)¡¦ for economy, ¡¥X3(threat for ecology and environment)¡¦ for environment and ¡¥X4(threat for lives and property)¡¦ for both economy and society. ¡@This study uses SJT on the construction of ¡¥CPC Yung-An LNG¡¦ for cognition conflict management. The results are as below: (i)Government has higher stability and consistency of making decision than the residents. (ii)Government and the residents have significant difference for weight mean values of X1, X2 and X4. And they are the conflicts between them. (iii)Men and women have no significant difference for weight mean values of all decision variables. (iv)The older deciders have higher emphasis on X3 than the younger. But they have no significant difference for weight mean values of the other decision variables. (v)Lower educational background deciders have higher emphasis on X4, and there is no significant difference for all the other decision variables. (vi)There is no significant difference for weight mean values of all decision variables between core and border area. ¡@Finally, the study gets the judging principles of government and the residents. They are ¡¦average weights¡¦ and ¡¥function types¡¦ of all decision variables. Then, we use ¡¥specify¡¦ on Policy PC 3.0 software to make estimated judging table for all decision situations for government and the residents. Looking into the table can estimate the acceptance of government and the residents for all combinations of decision variables when making policies. We also can use the table to estimate the change of acceptance of government and the residents when any decision variables improve, and the authorizations can use the resources for the most efficient and effective applications when proposing improving methods.

Relationship between employer image and organizational attractiveness as an employer: the moderating effects of the similarity between job seekers¡¦ and organizations¡¦ personality and others¡¦ opinion.

Wang, Ting-wen 06 February 2009 (has links)
Most of previous works focused on the relationship between organizational attractiveness as an employer and instrumental attributes of employer image. Potential job seekers were viewed as rational and alone decision makers. However, in addition to objective facts, potential job seekers consider other facts when they make a job decision such as emotional facts and perceived harmony with organization. Furthermore, potential job seekers hold a vague impression on a potential employer. Others¡¦ opinions of potential employers must be their crucial information sources and they may change decision because of others¡¦ opinion. The study add symbolic meaning construct to employer image and research the relationship between it and organizational attractiveness as an employer and found it is significant related to organizational attractiveness as an employer. The mediated effect of the similarity between potential job seekers¡¦ personality and organizations¡¦ personality and others¡¦ opinions are considered here. Both of them don¡¦t significant mediated the relationship between employer image and organizational attractiveness as an employer.

A Study of Chin Sheng-Tan¡¦s Hermeneutics on Du Fu's Poetics

Liao, Xyuan-hwei 23 July 2009 (has links)
The thesis mainly discusses the hermeneutic system on Du Fu¡¦s poetics, which was established after close analysis of Du Fu¡¦s poetry by a literary critic Chin Sheng-Tang (the end of the Ming and beginning of the Qing dynasties).Among all Tang poets Chin Sheng-Tang admired Du Fu the most for his poetics of seven line stanzas, which was viewed by Chin Sheng-Tang as an epitome of high aesthetical value and poetical canon. The critic proposed a method of decompositional analysis for studying Du Fu¡¦s poetry: he saw the interconnection between the title of the poem and it¡¦s content, and then decomposed the poem into small pieces, conducting close reading, so that the poem was seen as having three level structure from bigger to smaller ¡¥the level of passages, sentences and characters¡¦. First, we start with looking at ¡¥other interpretation¡¦ from the describing trend of hermeneutics on Du Fu¡¦s poetics prevailing during that period of time, pointing out what was the main opinion of the literary critics, and comparing it with the one of Chin Sheng-Tang¡¦s, and looking at his status among the circles of literary critics. Then we discuss the Chin Sheng-Tang ¡¥s ¡¥self interpretation¡¦ , explaining what kind of reader and critic he was. After that we provide the review of poetry reading methods and horizon in literary criticism, explaining how to use the method in literary analysis. After Chin Sheng-Tang¡¦s method of literary criticism becomes clear to us, we look how his caesura method is used to analyze structure of Du Fu¡¦s poetry. Through the caesura analysis we use reader¡¦s, author¡¦s and literary works point of view to find out whether this method is appropriate and whether it can reveal the spirit of that age or is it simply an over-reading. In the end we provide the conclusion about the effectiveness of the hermeneutic system, proposed by Chin Sheng-Tang.

The Influence of The Changes Of Electoral System For Legislators On Political Factions In Kaohsiung County

Hung, Cun-ming 05 August 2009 (has links)
In August, 2004, the Legislative Yuan in Taiwan passed landmark constitutional amendment proposals to cut the number of legislative seats in half, and adopt a "single-district, two-vote" system. In May, 2005, the parliamentary electorate system in Taiwan was officially changed from a single-nontransferable voting system (SNTV) to a single-member district parallel voting system. The new voting system was introduced in January, 2008. Under SNTV, the seats won in Kaohsiung County¡¥s legislator election were in proportion to the two political parties. However, the result of the first election after the electorate system changed showed a landslide victory of the KMT (Kuomingtang). The DPP (Democratic Progressive Party) should not have suffered such defeat in the election with the strength and power that their political factions have in Kaohsiung County. Many factors are for certain involved in winning or losing an election, and the focus of this thesis will be on the changes of political factions and how they can influent vote results. Under SNTV, the most influential and powerful political factions in Kaohsiung County were the Red Party, the White Party, and the Black Party. Under the new electoral system, however, as only one candidate will be elected, the political factions, as well as the candidates, have started changing their ways of thinking in terms of whom they should support. The candidates have been paying much more attention to the local political factions. Taking their own interests into consideration, the local political factions have also changed the way they intend to manipulate the vote results. The awakening of the local political factions indirectly made impacts on the result of the Seventh legislator election. In the future, the results of various elections may very well be influenced by the changes of the local political factions. To gain a clearer view of the changes of Kaohsiung County¡¥s political factions under the new voting system, the thesis will first describe the similarities and differences between SNTV and single-member district parallel voting system. It will then discuss the formation and development of Taiwan and Kaohsiung County¡¥s local political factions. The different electoral tactics of the KMT and the DPP under the two voting systems will then be analyzed, following by the examination of the voting results.
