The matter of memory : visual and performative witnessing of the Greensboro massacre

Pryor, Michael Scott 26 November 2012 (has links)
This report explores the role of documentary art in the constitution of collective memory in Greensboro, North Carolina, between the years 1999 and 2004. In that city on November 3, 1979, Ku Klux Klan and Nazis killed five labor organizers in broad daylight. Television news crews, on site to cover the anti-Klan march scheduled for that day, captured the killings on film. In spite of this evidence, all-white juries twice acquitted the Klan/Nazis of any wrongdoing. In the weeks and months that followed the massacre, city officials and mainstream media sought to disassociate Greensboro from the event, generating a master narrative that portrayed both the Klan/Nazis and labor organizers as outsiders, and the city as an innocent bystander. This narrative covered up the fact that the Greensboro police had extensive prior knowledge about the potential for violence, and yet were mysteriously absent when the Klan/Nazis arrived on the scene. In a third trial—a civil suit brought against the city by survivors of the shooting—Klan and police were found jointly liable for wrongful death. Twenty-five years later, the massacre and its aftermath served as the impetus for the first Truth and Reconciliation Commission in the United States. In the years leading up to the Commission, six artists—including the author—made or presented artwork in Greensboro about the killings. Importantly, none of the artists were from Greensboro or had any direct connection to the massacre. However, through their creative processes and final artworks, they made an implicit claim about the political relevance of remembering and engaging with the full history of November 3, 1979. Collectively, the art spanned a variety of mediums, including theater, paintings, music, and dance. Through interviews with the artists, archival research, and qualitative analysis, this report argues that the artists helped to generate the potential for an expanded, poly-vocal collective memory of the massacre. They did this through practices of citation and translation—converting the archive of factual history into aesthetic and material forms—that made the events of November 3, 1979 available to community members for encounter and interpretation in the present. / text

In Search of Wholeness: Holism's Quest to Reconcile Subject and Object, from Leibniz to the Deep Ecology Movement

Dessertine, Jordan 26 August 2015 (has links)
This thesis explores the ways in which key holistic thinkers over the course of the last three hundred years have articulated unity between the human subject and objective world. I borrow the term “holism” from the philosopher J. C. Smuts, who coined it in his 1936 work Holism and Evolution, and I use it here in an expanded sense that includes all thinkers in the Western tradition who, like Smuts, have been preoccupied with the question of unity. Although the nature of cosmic unity and the individual’s place within it have been questions for philosophical debate since the classical Greeks of the sixth and fifth centuries BC, from the seventeenth century onwards these questions became largely associated with a series of thinkers who sought to overcome the dualistic separation of subject and object introduced by Galileo, Descartes and others in the mechanistic philosophical tradition of Western thought. My consideration of the holistic tradition includes selected writings by Leibniz, Hegel, Whitehead and Arne Naess, cofounder and key communicator of the deep ecology movement. In my discussion of these authors I observe an emerging pattern that has gradually carried holistic thought away from its traditional dependence on an absolute universal Being as the origin of unity in the world, towards an increasing emphasis on Becoming as the origin of Being. This pattern is confirmed by my broad analyses of Renaissance philosophy and of the Counter-Enlightenment thinkers Vico, Hamann and Herder. It is further confirmed by Naess’ vision of the deep ecology movement, which emphasizes plurality and diversity in the struggle to create more ecologically sustainable forms of human living. The pattern is challenged, however, by my discussions of Heraclitus and of the deep ecology movement, which both exhibit features that also contradict the existence of a definite linear progression “from Being to Becoming.” Insofar as the deep ecology movement recognizes the validity of a broad diversity of philosophical views and premises as grounds for ecological action and decision-making, it is part of a larger movement in contemporary societies that is helping create an open space wherein all perspectives are appreciated as valuable in their own right. This movement seeks to challenge all absolute and hegemonic claims to truth (which in the early twentieth century gave rise to fascism and in our present day continue to inform our views of nature and the self), and, as I suggest, is also contributing to the emergence of an apophatic perspective in our own day that is a precondition for change. / Graduate / 0422 / 0585 / jdesser@uvic.ca

Grassroots peacemaking : the paradox of “reconciliation” in El Salvador

Velásquez Estrada, Ruth Elizabeth 13 July 2011 (has links)
This paper examines how ex-combatants of El Salvador’s 1980-1992 civil war view post-war processes of reconciliation. I demonstrate that contrary to dominant understandings of ongoing political polarization in El Salvador, perpetuated by Salvadoran political parties, many former army and guerrilla combatants are coexisting in the same communities and working together in various ways. I show how the Salvadoran Peace Accords and the apparent political polarization has opened a space for the recreation of social networks and the creation of communities in post-war societies. I call this process “grassroots peacemaking,”emphasizing the everyday negotiations of remembering and creating new social relations in a nation torn apart by war and violence. / text

The Ambon conflict and social work interventions : a critical study of reconciliation efforts between Muslim and Christian communities initiated by governmental and non-governmental organizations

Lessy, Zulkipli. January 2005 (has links)
Thus thesis focuses on the roles of social work (on the part of governments and NGOs) in dealing with Indonesia's Ambon conflict (1999 to date). The research seeks to map the roots of the conflict and the interventions made by both level of government and NGOs and to examine the strengths and weaknesses of their social work efforts in conflict resolution. Based on an analysis of these efforts of these institutions, this thesis offers some suggestions as to an enhanced role for social work in dealing with future reconciliation in Ambon especially and in Indonesia generally.

[toliau žr. visą tekstą] / This paper investigates the interoperability solutions and specific methods of the reconciliation of business rules, small and medium-sized business (hereinafter referred to as SMB) management in information systems, as well as the problems and opportunities related to such reconciliation. The main objective of the research is to review and analyse the problems of business rules reconciliation and their solutions. The paper will attempt to create a method based on results, which will allow users to reconcile business rules in enterprise interoperability solutions more effectively. The goal of the paper is to investigate existing reconciliation methods of business rules, their limitations and possibilities, as well as offer a method which will be more effective in reconciling negotiation rules of two or more companies. Utilising the proposed method, the paper aims to find solutions to the problems related to automated negotiations where previously outlined negotiation rules between two or more parties are automatically reconciled and applied to the exchanged business documents with a minimal participation of people. The need for such research arose from the increased competition between SMBs, the necessity to enhance companies’ interoperability when fulfilling orders, as well as the pursuit to offer more effective, better quality services. The paper consists of the introduction, six parts and the conclusion. The first four parts encapsulate the relevance of the problem, the... [to full text]

När döden knackar på : Uttryck för försoning i det lidande som amyotrofisk lateralskleros innebär

Lowert, Antonia, Oddli, Emelie January 2013 (has links)
Background: To suffer from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is traumatic for the affected individual and usually leads to a drastic shortening of life. The absence of reconciliation towards the dying person´s destiny may lead to that the remaining part of life comprises despair and agony. Therefore, it is important for care givers to have knowledge about meaning of reconciliation. Aim: The study aims to examine whether, and if so, persons diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis express reconciliation with their deadly and rapidly progressive disease. Methods: The analysis performed was inspired by Lundman´s and Hällgren Graneheim´s (2008) method of qualitative content analysis to examine the latent expressions of the concept of reconciliation. The analysis is based on four autobiographies. Results: Moments of reconciliation can be expressed as bearable suffering, experiences of satisfaction and experiences of safety through existential thoughts. Factors that could enable moments of reconciliation may be the development of new perspectives, comfort which results in the absence of fear and through creation of a meaning of life situation. Conclusion: Experiences of reconciliation can be expressed in many different ways based on individual factors such as social context and values. Moments of reconciliation can occur over short periods and are not a constant condition.

Timing equity issuance in response to mandatory accounting standards change in Australia and the European Union

Wang, Shiheng 11 July 2008 (has links)
This study examines the association between changes in accounting performance resulting from mandated adoption of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and managerial incentives to engage in opportunistic equity issuance. Based on 2,719 Australian and the European Union firms that are required to adopt IFRS starting in 2005, I find that firms disclosing a material decline in reported net income under IFRS relative to reported net income under local standards are revalued downwards, while firms disclosing a material improvement in reported net income under IFRS relative to reported net income under local standards are revalued upwards. This indicates that relative to financial statements prepared according to local accounting standards, financial statements under IFRS convey new information that impacts market value. Building on the market timing hypothesis, I find that managers exploit their private information about the effects of changes in accounting standards on accounting performance and that managers strategically time equity issuance before their firms disclose those effects. In particular, during the three-year window prior to a firm disclosing the financial statement effects of IFRS adoption, the firm’s likelihood and size of equity issuance are negatively associated with the change in reported net income resulting from IFRS adoption. This is consistent with the prediction that firms whose reported performance is negatively affected by mandated changes in accounting standards are more likely to issue equity and issue a larger volume of equity in advance of the disclosure of those negative effects. The association between equity issuance and the relative decline in accounting performance resulting from IFRS adoption is robust to alternative definitions of equity issuers, specifications and measures of accounting performance, and changes in sample composition. I find some evidence that equity issuance is positively associated with earnings forecast optimism, where earnings forecast optimism is another proxy for information asymmetry arising from mandatory adoption of IFRS. / Thesis (Ph.D, Management) -- Queen's University, 2008-07-10 17:39:27.512

Bearing One's Cross: A critical analysis of Mary Grey's view on atonement.

Festus, Heather. January 2008 (has links)

&nbsp /

The aim of this research project was to seek a reinterpretation of the Christian motif of' bearing one's cross'. This motif has been widely criticized by feminist theologians as an instrument that exacerbates the oppression of women, since it encourages self-sacrifice and in this way legitimizes abusive relationships.
