On Black Anger: An Analytic-Philosophical Response to the Problem of Social ValueHumphreys, Christopher 01 January 2018 (has links)
The fact of racial injustice in the US presents the difficult question of which emotional responses are (conceptually) appropriate to the perpetration of that injustice. Given that our answer must be informed by the nature of the injustice, this paper takes up Christopher Lebron’s diagnosis of the persistence of racial injustice against blacks in the US as a problem of social value in order to analyze a candidate response on the part of black americans. If Lebron’s theory accurately describes the problem, then it seems that anger appropriately responds to the injustice. The paper’s aim, then, is to give a positive account of black anger in response to the problem of social value. The account is informed by an analysis of “angry black literature,” i.e. a selection of essays from W. E. B. Du Bois, James Baldwin, and Audre Lorde. Approaching the subject within the framework of analytic philosophy, the paper concludes that anger is appropriate in virtue of its being a response to specific moral failures, and further notes that anger offers the ameliorative benefit of pointing out where those failures have taken place, and how we can avoid them in the future.

Caring and Respect in Preschool Classrooms: Connecting Ethical Theory to Empirical ResearchJanuary 2014 (has links)
abstract: This study focuses on the principles of caring and respect for persons, and how they are manifested in the preschool classroom. Caring and respect are core ethical principles. When applied, they inform our thinking and guide our behavior. Leading ethicists, including Immanuel Kant and Nel Noddings, have argued that caring and respect are vital elements in ethical human relationships. This dissertation is at the forefront of a new line of inquiry which is seeking to connect the philosophical with the empirical in ways that can be illuminating for both, and for education research and practice more generally. The study connects ethical theory with a qualitative analysis of how the principles of caring and respect do and do not manifest in pre-K classrooms. The empirical portion of this study is a secondary data analysis of classroom videos collected for a large-scale research project conducted by the National Center for Research on Early Childhood Education (NCRECE). Using maximum variation sampling, I identified six preschool classrooms to examine in regard to my research questions and identify observable behaviors associated with caring and respectful interactions. These video samples of teachers interactions with small and larger groups of children were then transcribed, described, analyzed, and discussed through the lens of the ethics of care and respect for persons. The study found that caring and respect for persons were either not demonstrated or were demonstrated in very limited ways in the observable behaviors of teachers in the samples of preschool classrooms under examination. Sveriges narkotikapolitik har en tydlig noll vision; Sverige skall bli ett drogfritt samhälle. För att uppnå det målet följer Sverige en så kallad nolltoleransmodell, vilket innebär en strikt policy som säger att all hantering och bruk oavsett volym och syfte är olagligt. Jag argumenterar att det är en skadlig och ineffektiv policy att applicera på drogproblematiken i Sverige och argumenterar därför istället för att införa en så kallad skadereducerande policy. Detta är istället en policy som accepterar att droger är en del av samhället. En sådan policy jobbar främst med förebyggande och behandlande åtgärder, jag argumenterar för en avkriminalisering av personligt bruk av drog. Jag kommer använda mig av empirisk källor och moralfilosofiska argument för att påvisa att en skadereducerade policy gynnar samhället både ur ett socialt och ekonomiskt perspektiv.

It has become quite noticeable that modern world politics across the globe has lacked a guiding morality in which we can hold states morally accountable in both the international and domestic spheres. This can be seen in the never-ending wars and occupations across the Middle East, South-East Asia, and many other places around the world. Now, attempting to implement such guiding moral principles seems to be an impossible task mainly because of the massive difficulties that one would face in trying to get the 195 countries around the world to agree on such principles. Because of this, most will probably accuse me of eurocentrism, which I hope to avoid in this paper. Despite this fact, I believe that the inevitable effects of the Climate Crisis and the need to see basic human rights observed across the world are enough reason to at least discuss the question: How can we begin to hold collective agents, states specifically, accountable for their actions?

A Capabilities Approach to Late Modernity : Flexibility, Singularity, and Human Flourishing in the Labor MarketGürtler, Paula January 2022 (has links)
In my paper, I argue that the underlying social ideals of the late modern labor market, namely flexibility and singularity, undermine human flourishing as conceptualized by Martha C. Nussbaum. It is on these grounds, that we should be critical of late modernity. For an account of late modernity, I rely on the sociological works of Ulrich Beck (1992), Zygmunt Bauman (2000; 2007a), and Andreas Reckwitz (Reckwitz & Pakis, 2020). My account of this socio-historical era focusses on the three main components that set it apart from the previous industrial modernity according to the aforementioned sociologists: the revolution in ICT, the creative economy, and the socio-cultural revolution within the new middle class. It becomes clear that these three components contribute to a more liquid, flexible, and singularized setting. On this basis, then, I will introduce the ethical theory of Martha C. Nussbaum: The Capabilities Approach. I will justify the methodological choice of using her theory, and not that the Capabilities approach of Amartya Sen. My focus on human flourishing will be defended against the accusation of being universalist or biased, and the suggestion that preference utilitarianism would be a better fit for my research objective. The main body of my paper is the ethical analysis and weighing of arguments for and against my thesis, that we ought to object to the social ideals promoted by the late modern labor market because they undermine human flourishing. I will give two main arguments in support of this thesis, each corresponding to one of Nussbaum's central Capabilities. The first one identifies a conflict between the requirements for our emotional Capability and the kind of self-sufficiency needed to achieve the social ideal of flexibility. I show, that flexibility has become a necessary coping strategy for the late modern individual, making the conflict a pressing one to solve. My second argument draws out a lack of respect and dignity granted to those who perform functional labor (mostly in the service sector) in late modernity, because the functional worker can not live up to the social ideal of singularity. The lack of respect for functional workers pushes them below the threshold required for human flourishing. Finally, I will consider the counterargument, that the late modern labor market provides better opportunities for creative expression and self-actualization. Is that not the epitome of human flourishing i.e. the actualization of one's potentialities? However, I refute this counterargument on multiple grounds: firstly, the goal is not human flourishing, but economic profit. Secondly, it promotes a kind of consumerism, that seems to conflict with emotional needs. Lastly, the workers who are enabled creative expression, are and will remain few.

The balance also relates to the right to privacy which can be limited with the intention to protect the child, but the child’s evolving capacities and autonomy is to be taken into consideration. The purpose is to search for a plausible understanding of the ethical balance of children’s autonomy and the parental responsibility to protect within the context of the digital sphere. This means I make the case that how the child’s autonomy is viewed is fundamental for determining the balance within this context. Two theoretical perspectives on autonomy of Amy Mullin and Joseph Raz are utilized in the study. Additionally, I offer an analysis of a general comment on children’s rights in relation to the digital environment and other material from UNICEF’s research centre Innocenti.

standard of what work should be for all human beings, based on the normative idea that
being human entails a realization of one’s potential and the expression of one’s intellect and
creativity as a necessary part of living a full and flourishing life. Thus the key ethical
foundation upon which my argument was built rests primarily upon classic Aristotelian
ethical theory as well as more contemporary adaptations thereof. In reality, however,
research reveals that up to eighty percent of people engage in work that is not meaningful
in the sense that they are unable to experience both excellence and enjoyment through
their work. This problem has been labeled as “employee disengagement” and has been
acknowledged by organizations as a disturbingly growing trend particularly because of the
financial cost it carries through lost productivity.
My objective in this thesis was to outline the scope of the problem, and to make a strong
case for the recognition of employee disengagement as a moral problem, and not simply as
an economic one. Thus a major focus of this thesis was to unpack the concept of meaningful
work and to argue for its moral value. Throughout my thesis, the importance of
understanding meaningful work as a balance between both the subjective and objective
elements that make work meaningful for the individual was emphasized. Having established
employee disengagement as a moral problem, my attention then turned towards analyzing
the potential causes of the problem at a systemic, organizational and individual level. My
primary conclusion was that the modern paradigm facilitated a certain way of organizing
business activity as well as a certain way of construing the relationship between work and
life that has ultimately had a deep seated causal effect upon the absence of meaningful
work. Thus addressing the problem entails a detachment from this paradigm and
challenging some of the basic assumptions about organizational life.
Finally, I proposed a business model that serves as a framework for a new way of working
which has the capacity to be more fulfilling to the human spirit. This model assumes the
tenets of virtue ethics as its core. In this model, individual employees, the organization as a
community and leaders in the business all have specific roles and responsibilities to bring
the model to life, and thus the quest for meaningful work has to be undertaken as a
collaborative effort. The field of business ethics, with a refreshed Aristotelian mindset, has a
lot of value to add in offering much needed ethical guidance to help steer this radical, yet
exciting workplace transformation process in the right direction. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die kerngedagte van hierdie tesis is dat betekenisvolle arbeid die normatiewe standaard sou
skep van wat werk vandonderstel is om vir die mensdom te beteken. Dit berus op die
veronderstelling dat menswees meebring dat die individu se volle potensiaal, intelligensie en
kreatiwiteit sal lei tot ‘n betekenisvolle bestaan. Die sleutelargument steun primêr die
klassieke Aristoteliese etiese teorie asook hendendaagse aanpassings daarvan. Navorsing
bewys egter dat tot 80% van die arbeidsmag betrokke is in betekenislose (sinlose) arbeid in
die sin dat hulle geen genot of uitnemendheid ervaar nie. Die probleem word geetiketteer as
“werknemersonttrekking” en word deur maatskappye beskou as ‘n onstellende tendens ten
opsigte van die finansiële impak en die gepaardgaande verlies van produktiwiteit.

vlak. Die gevolgtrekking is dan dat die moderne paradigma ‘n sekere invloed het op die

onmisbare etiese leiding, om hierdie radikale maar opwindende transformasie in die
werkplek mee te bring.
