Eliciting User Requirements Using Appreciative Inquiry

Gonzales, Carol Kernitzki 01 January 2010 (has links)
Many software development projects fail because they do not meet the needs of users, are over-budget, and abandoned. To address this problem, the user requirements elicitation process was modified based on principles of Appreciative Inquiry. Appreciative Inquiry, commonly used in organizational development, aims to build organizations, processes, or systems based on success stories using a hopeful vision for an ideal future. Spanning five studies, Appreciative Inquiry was evaluated for its effectiveness with eliciting user requirements. In the first two cases, it was compared with traditional approaches with end-users and proxy-users. The third study was a quasi-experiment comparing the use of Appreciative Inquiry in different phases of in the software development cycle. The final two case studies combined all lessons learned using Appreciative Inquiry, with multiple case studies to gain additional understanding for the requirements gathered during various project phases. Each study evaluated the requirements gathered, developer and user attitudes, and the Appreciative Inquiry process itself. Requirements were evaluated for the quantity and their type regardless of whether they were implemented or not. Attitudes were evaluated for process feedback, as well as requirements and project commitment. The Appreciative Inquiry process was evaluated with differing groups, projects, and project phases to determine how and when it is best applied. Potentially interceding factors were also evaluated including: team effectiveness, emotional intelligence, perceived stress, the experience of the facilitator, and the development project type itself. Appreciative Inquiry produced positive results for the participants, the requirements obtained, and the general requirements eliciting-process. Appreciative Inquiry demonstrated benefits to the requirements gathered by increasing the number of unique requirements as well as identifying more quality-based (non-functional) and forward-looking requirements. It worked well with defined projects, when there was time for participants to reflect on the thought-provoking questions, structured questions and extra time to facilitate the extraction and translation of requirements, and a knowledgeable interviewer. The participants (end-users and developers) expressed improved vision and confidence. End-users participated consistently with immediate buy-in and enthusiasm, especially those users who were technically-inhibited. Development teams expressed improved confidence, and improved user communication and understanding.

Based on the Appreciative Inquiry method, group dynamics were organised and conceived as encounters between inmates and the prison staff. Starting from these meetings, week after week and along the interactions, the study set its purpose: to find out what are the goals and other benchmark standards to behave into the prison. Then, thanks to the data analysis, the issue about the prisoners rehabilitation (ressocialização in portuguese) was highlighted as the most relevant one. What appeared central to the discussions was the use of this expression as a keyword by the prison unity so that this one could implement the legitimacy of its action. Nevertheless, since the end of the empirical activities, it has been appointed that the meaning of this word as a goal for the prison in question has not been discovered yet. Therefore, in the frame of this research, the notion of rehabilitation in jail is going to be explored and discussed factually, that is to say, by the people who are experiencing the daily life in this place. Indeed, rather than a guide for action concerning everybody in the unity, rehabilitation has been understood more as language convention between the different profiles of persons. This way, as a deal, it may enable the prevention of open conflicts into the institution in question.

Forgetting to remember : organisational memory

Van Rensburg, Madri Stephani Jansen 02 1900 (has links)
Organisations need to learn from their current and past experiences to optimise their activities, decisions and future strategies. Non-governmental organisations are similar to public or governmental departments in that learning is crucial for their existence. One of the key factors influencing learning is the development and maintenance of a functional organisational memory. The organisational memory is a dynamic entity encompassing more than the storage facilities provided by an information technology system. It also resides in human form, acting as reservoirs and interpretation centres and feeding the organisational memory as a whole. Previous research in organisational memory focussed mostly on describing the structure of the storage systems, with the current focus on developing management information systems to enhance organisational memory storage and retrieval. Some work has been undertaken to describe the processes involved, which include accessing, storing and retrieving the memory. Other functions that need special attention are the development of data to information, and especially creating and using knowledge. The studies mostly involved existing organisational memory as it was represented at a specific time of the organisations’ development. This study looks at all the different developmental phases of a regional NGO, which include start-up, expansion in target territory, expansion in activities, consolidation and close-out. To investigate the temporal changes of organisational memory in a regional intermediary NGO, a retrospective case study methodology was used. The NGO was closing down, providing an opportunity to investigate all the stages of development. The data collection, analysis and interpretation involved various in-depth interviews with current and past staff members and other key stakeholders, such as beneficiary organisations and consultants. In addition, a complex set of documents were studied, including proposals, strategic documents, minutes of meetings, and audiovisual material. The main themes and factors, such as individuals, leadership, electronic and other management of the organisational memory, culture, including the importance of a vision and theory of change, policies and global developments are discussed using a temporal ecological framework. The key findings of this study illustrate the importance of directories as part of the metamemory in accessing seemingly dormant organisational memories. The conclusion is that organisational memory survives after the demise of the organisation and that it is accessible through directories. / Psychology / Ph. D. (Consulting Psychology)

The aim of this dissertation is to develop of a appreciative evaluation process of the Center of Juridical Practices of Faculdade de Direito do Recife (NPJ/FDR), so that to bring to the lights “what works well”, so how this occur and the implications of the results achieved during institutional performance on as integrant part of professional formation of the law graduation students of UFPE. It was studied themes such as: Brazilian public administration and the federal public university focused on management form able to provide teaching, research and extension in an inseparability way, with background of inherent practices to the law student formation. The approach e methodology of appreciative inquiry (AI) gave support to application of appreciative evaluation of institutional design of NPJ/FDR, formed by public defense institution, a federal police outpost and a conciliation, mediation and arbitrage chamber. The methodology was developed based on an exploratory, descriptive, explanatory and interventionist research, launching documentary, bibliographic data and case study strategy. The appreciative evaluation intent the data be object of collecting and analysis integrated to the 5-D model: Definition, Discovery, Dream, Design and Destiny, practice according to collaborative research performed by teachers (including coordinators and formers coordinators of NPJ), students of law graduation, administrative technicians and the public defense institution and federal justice members as well. Therefore, it was constructed appreciative interviews, meetings and workshops with the research members. The present work was performed through data analysis collected, data theoretical triangulation and validation by collaborative team. As result, was established among collaborative team an action plan for the NPJ, whose objective is to implant improvements and innovations suggested, as well as to plead support and compromise of center direction whose NPJ is subjected. Appreciative evaluation lead to clear comprehension about what works well in the NPJ/FDR department, by establishment of a train of thought about what occur in the past, realize the relevant facts in its former actions, identifying areas subjected to fit, innovations and improvements, for let may could be have a satisfactory professional formation of the law graduate students of FDR/UFPE, from a provocative proposition performed by NPJ team: NPJ should be promote, in the practical students formation the inseparability among teaching, researching and extension, motivating the development of skills and competencies to apply law acknowledgment. Lastly, the conclusion is the perspective about adopted evaluation, brings to the light how to achieve the consecution of an appropriate participative approach based on people capacity to stand up in a strategy of analysis, which had been meant an learning experience and reference point to self knowledge about what the institution should deliver. To the future is expected the development complementary studies having as a focus other departments of FDR, aiming to promote a kind of positive revolution, large in possibilities to be adopted in organizational of FDR departments.

Pastoral participation in a school context: transforming trauma

Geldenhuys, Marina, M.Th. 30 November 2007 (has links)
The research started in a school context where the teachers were severely affected by the changes in and closing of their school. In my qualitatively based research project, I embarked with the research participants on a pastoral, narrative- and appreciative inquiry approach which assist the teachers to deal more efficiently with the effects of the changes they experienced. By sharing and reflecting on their stories, a climate that's conducive to their well-being was constructed. I describe how my participatory action research invited the teachers to be active research participants, who are responsible for their own construction of richer or alternative meanings in their lives. / Practical theology / M. Parents-initiated interventions to prevent HIV among adolescents in Swaziland

Magagula, Nomsa 12 1900 (has links)
Research has identified the important role that effective parent-adolescent communication about sex and relationships signifies in reducing the chances of adolescents engaging in risky sexual behaviour. However, many parents find it difficult to discuss issues related to HIV prevention at family level because HIV prevention is inherently linked to sex, which is still regarded as a taboo in some countries, including the country of the study, Swaziland. In addition to cultural barriers related to effective parent-adolescent communication, parents seem to lack the knowledge, approach as well as the confidence regarding communication about sex and relationships. The purpose of the study was to use appreciative inquiry (AI) to engage parents of adolescents in the design of interventions to prevent HIV among adolescents in Swaziland. Non-probability, purposive sampling was used to select parents of adolescent children (10-19 years) attending school at the two purposively selected high schools in Manzini. Twenty-four (24), 23 female and 1 male parents took part in AI. Participatory action research was conducted to involve participants actively in the process of initiating interventions for preventing HIV among adolescents. The process was guided by appreciative inquiry. Data was collected by means of appreciative interviews, comprising paired and focus group interviews according to different phases of the 4-D cycle of AI. Thematic analysis of data was done throughout the 4-D cycle of AI. The themes that emerged from appreciative stories of exceptional experiences shared during the discovery phase were perceived gains and open communication. The findings of the dream phase included expressed wishes for open parent-adolescent sexual health communication, support for parents and a community of HIV free adolescents. In the design phase, parents constructed and initiated interventions for effective parent-adolescent sexual health communication and parental comfort with communication about sex. In the destiny phase, parents made statements, which were based on what they committed to do to prevent HIV among adolescents. / Lucwaningo lukhombisa bumcoka bekukhumisana kahle kwemtali nemtfwana loyinsha ngetindzaba tebundlelwane bebantfu labatsandzanako netekulalana kuze kutsi kunciphe kutsi intsha ingabi sengotini yekutfola ligciwane HIV. Engaging with a Prevention Approach: System Supports Needed in Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention

Vilches, Silvia L, McDaniel, Beth S., Sherman, Haley, Burks, Brianna, Merritt, Allie, Jackson, Terra, Flowers, Synithia W. 03 April 2020 (has links)
Public policy has been shifting from child abuse and neglect (CAN) intervention toward prevention, using public health style frameworks, which emphasize shared community and legislative responsibilities to support families (Browne, 2014; CDC, 2014). Analysis of qualitative data from statewide focus groups held in 2019 in Alabama with 99 community-based CAN prevention workers shows strengths in community collaboration, but also, struggles to help families meet basic needs because of lack of community resources, such as transportation and quality child care, and other barriers, including stigma. The results demonstrate confusion between prevention, which is intended to build family resilience to avert crisis, and intervention, meant to reunite families after child protection services involvement. We recommend researchers consistently link CAN research to prevention frameworks so as to build meaningful understanding how to create better prevention programs. Future practitioners should understand prevention, and be prepared to document their work so as to demonstrate need.
