Escape Velocity: A Narrative Short

This thesis book describes the development and production of Escape Velocity, a short narrative film. The writing, pre-production, shooting, and editing of the film are reviewed. Script drafts and a final budget are included in the appendices. The film concerns Larry Pipe and Percy Knuckle, best friends who dream of moving to Barbados. They hope to open a beachside bar and spend the rest of their days relaxing and watching girls. When Percy starts dating Melinda Bundt, however, Larry's jealousy threatens to destroy the men's friendship. When Percy needs money to follow Melinda to Atlanta, Larry must choose between supporting his best friend or pursuing their dream of Barbados alone. Escape Velocity examines the ways we hold ourselves back from pursuing our dreams, the reasons we justify doing so, and the changes in our life that finally inspire us to move toward our goals.

The silence in Journey was observed as a composition element of language, in other words, as something that wasn t purposely said but could have produced some kind of communicational effect on the route of the narrative that was proposed to the plot. So, we discovered places and characters that compose the playful universe of this electronic game by the metaphore of silence, approaching narrative systems, technics of art direction and projectual relations established by this context. This is the central point of this project, translate the silence and its absences in a communicating element, transformer of players perception and sensibility by the narratives and the art direction of an artistic expression in shape of videogame. / Esta pesquisa propõe a abordagem teórica do silêncio como elemento comunicacional, como um elemento ligado a materialidade da linguagem, como um meio capaz de produzir ritmo narrativo e de edificar as bases projetuais destinadas ao desenvolvimento e a implementação da direção de arte em um projeto voltado a criação de Journey, um jogo digital independente para os videogames de sétima geração. O silêncio em Journey foi observado como elemento compositivo de linguagem, isto é, como aquilo que intencionalmente não foi dito, mas que conseguiu produzir algum tipo de efeito comunicacional no percurso da narrativa proposta para a trama. Assim, descobrimos os ambientes e os personagens que compõem o universo lúdico deste jogo digital por meio de um estudo de caso e da metáfora do silêncio, abordando os sistemas narrativos, as técnicas de direção de arte e as relações projetuais estabelecidas a partir deste contexto. Este é o objetivo central deste trabalho, traduzir o silêncio e suas ausências em um elemento comunicador, transformador da percepção e da sensibilidade dos jogadores por meio das narrativas e da direção de arte de uma expressão artística em forma de videogame.

A partir dessa constatação, definiu-se como proposta de pesquisa a compreensão de como esse imaginário é apropriado e traduzido visualmente por essas produções via direção de arte e design de identidade visual, com ênfase no que aqui é chamado de identidade visual gráfica. Para tanto, realizaram-se estudos de trajetória histórica e constituição social da Idade Média, mapeamentos de cultura material e cultura visual na história da arte medieval, relações entre práticas medievais de trabalho e práticas contemporâneas de design, estabelecimento de figuras e formas do medievo, conforme metodologia proposta por Omar Calabrese (1987), mapeamentos de representações do medieval no contemporâneo e, finalmente, análises específicas do universo empírico da pesquisa, constituído pelas seguintes produções: a trilogia de filmes O Senhor dos Anéis, a série televisiva Game Of Thrones e o jogo eletrônico World Of Warcraft. Com isso, e com o resultado prático que integra a pesquisa (um guia de estilo gráfico da estética medieval), objetivou-se uma contribuição acadêmica na direção de auxiliar pesquisadores e profissionais da área no sentido da reflexão acerca das práticas abordadas. / This study is the result of an observation of the existence of a recurring theme and aesthetics of the medieval imagery in contemporary audiovisual productions. From this observation, it was defined as a research proposal to understand how this imagery is appropriate and translated visually by these productions via art direction and visual identity design, with emphasis on what here is called graphic visual identity. Therefore, it was made studies of historical trajectory and social constitution of the Middle Ages, as well as mappings of the material culture visual culture in the history of medieval art, and also relations between medieval working practices and contemporary design practices, and the establishment of figures and forms of the medieval, according to the methodology proposed by Omar Calabrese (1987), as well as mappings of medieval representations in the contemporary. Finally, it was also made a specific analysis empirical universe of this research, which consists in the following productions: the film trilogy The Lord of the Rings, the television series Game of Thrones and the electronic game World Of Warcraft. With this, and with the practical result that integrates the research (a graphic style guide of medieval aesthetics), this study was aimed to be a contribution in order to help researchers and professionals in the direction of a reflection on the practices addressed.

El presente proyecto de investigación tiene como objetivo principal realizar un análisis acerca de la presencia de aportes de la dirección de arte a su narrativa fílmica. El caso de estudio será la película peruana Una sombra al frente, dirigida por Augusto Tamayo, en el año 2007. Para desarrollarlo, se toma como punto de partida a las discusiones teóricas sobre la dirección de arte, narrativa fílmica (construcción y perfil de personajes) mencionadas por Augusto Tamayo y Nathalie Hendrickx (2016). Asimismo, por David Bordwell y Kristin Thompson (2002) en sus libros de investigación acerca de los elementos de la dirección de arte. Estas categorías se realizarán a manera de un estado de la cuestión. Además, para la profundización teórica, se revisaron estudios de autores tales como de Deborah Nadoolman, (2014), Bruce Block (2010), José Pérez (2016), Robert Mckee (2004), entre otros, desde una perspectiva audiovisual y cinematográfica. Finalmente, sobre esta base, se propone una investigación con diseño metodológico cualitativo centrado en el análisis de contenido de estas cinco dimensiones (vestuario, utilería, maquillaje, peinado y locación) en la película referida. A través de este proyecto, una vez recopilado los datos y se elabore el análisis, se busca crear y explorar los beneficios que contiene los objetos que utiliza la dirección de arte en el cine, películas, series entre otros. / The main objective of this research project is to carry out an analysis about the presence of contributions from art direction to its film narrative. The case study will be the Peruvian film Una sombra al Frente, directed by Augusto Tamayo, in 2007. To develop it, theoretical discussions about art direction, film narrative (construction and character profile are taken as a starting point) mentioned by Augusto Tamayo and Nathalie Hendrickx (2016). Also by David Bordwell and Kristin Thompson (2002) in their research books on the elements of art direction. These categories will be made as a state of the art. In addition, for the theoretical deepening, studies by authors such as Deborah Nadoolman, (2014), Bruce Block (2010), José Pérez (2016), Robert Mckee (2004), among others, were reviewed from an audiovisual and cinematographic perspective. En la actualidad, las mujeres se encuentran en una constante lucha por prevalecer sus derechos frente a una sociedad sometida a pensamientos androcentristas. Esto se expande inclusive al plano artístico musical pues en el género pop urbano prevalece el manejo de mensajes machistas y la cosificación de la mujer. Frente a esto, artistas del género adoptan una práctica con enfoque feminista en búsqueda de la liberación de la mujer. En este contexto, el presente trabajo de investigación busca analizar cómo se representa el feminismo en los videos musicales de artistas feministas del género pop urbano en los últimos años. Para ello, se determinará el uso del concepto creativo e intencionalidad desde los realizadores y/o artistas con relación a las piezas de videos musicales realizados. Posteriormente, se identificarán los componentes estéticos y las propuestas discursivas que manejan. Este articulo se realizara en base al tipo de investigacion interpretativo con enfoque cualitativo. Asimismo, la metodología que se aplicará para la producción de datos será el análisis de contenido. / Today, women are in a constant struggle to prevail their rights against a society subjected to androcentric thoughts. This even expands to the musical artistic plane because in the urban pop genre the handling of macho messages and the objectification of women prevail. Faced with this, artists of the genre adopt a practice with a feminist approach in search of the liberation of women. In this context, this research work seeks to analyze how feminism is represented in the music videos of feminist artists of the urban pop genre in recent years. For this, the use of the creative concept and intentionality from the filmmakers and / or artists in relation to the pieces of music videos made will be determined. Subsequently, the aesthetic components and the discursive proposals they handle will be identified. This article will be made based on the type of interpretive research with a qualitative approach. Desde el éxito de la canción “Despacito” de Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee, el género urbano del reggaetón ha venido obteniendo mayor presencia en países de habla hispana. Así como este género musical se ha venido popularizando internacionalmente, han surgido diversos movimientos a favor de la igualdad de género y la defensa a los derechos de la mujer, y al mismo tiempo aparecían nuevas cantantes de reggaetón que se destacaban por demostrar el empoderamiento femenino tanto en las letras de las canciones como en los videoclips musicales. Por ello, el presente trabajo es un análisis narrativo audiovisual de los videoclips de reggaetón de Karol G entre los años 2017 y 2019 desde un enfoque de género para explicar la representación de la mujer en los videoclips como productos audiovisuales y publicitarios de alta difusión musical. Desde un paradigma interpretativo y un enfoque cualitativo se plantea un estudio de caso aplicado a los seis videoclips más visualizados de la artista en Youtube lanzados entre 2017 y 2019. Se propone analizar tres categorías relacionadas a la narrativa y la dirección de arte desde un enfoque de género; perfil de personajes, acciones y contexto. / Since the success of the song "Despacito" by Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee, the urban reggaeton genre has been gaining more presence in Spanish-speaking countries. Just as this musical genre has become internationally popular, various movements have arisen in favor of gender equality and the defense of women's rights, and at the same time new reggaeton singers appeared who excelled in showing female empowerment both in the lyrics of the songs as in the music video clips. Therefore, this work is an audiovisual narrative analysis of Karol G's reggaeton video clips between 2017 and 2019 from a gender perspective to explain the representation of women in video clips as audiovisual and advertising products with high musical diffusion. From an interpretative paradigm and a qualitative approach, a case study is proposed applied to the artist's six most viewed video clips on YouTube released between 2017 and 2019. El cine peruano está creciendo y con el crece el arte visual. La dirección de arte es una representación visual con mucho valor para la narrativa de una película. Es por eso que en este trabajo de investigación busco ver como los elementos de la dirección de arte, tal como; la paleta de color, el vestuario, la utilería, la escenografía y locaciones, ayudan al aporte narrativo de una película. Las películas ha analizar será la trilogía de Asu Mare, siendo de las películas más taquilleras en el Perú pero, al mismo tiempo, también siendo una película duramente criticada por falta de valor visual. Se podrá ver como los distintos elementos de la dirección de arte demuestran de manera sutil los sentimientos en lo que el personaje principal Cachin se encuentra en determinadas situaciones. Tambien ayudaran a demostrar el tiempo narrativo durante las películas. Ayudaran a notar las diferencias entre sectores socioeconómicos en la capital, Lima. Busco demostrar el valor narrativo de la dirección de arte a través de ejemplos exitosos en el cine peruano. / The contribution of production design elements on the visual narrative of the trilogy of Asu Mare. Peruvian film industry is increasing and so is the visual arts in it. Production design is a visual representation with a lot of value on the narrative of a movie. That’s why on this investigation I’ll try to show how production design element such as, colour pallet, wardrobe, props, stage design and location, help on the narrative side of a movie. The movies that are going to be analyse are going to be the 3 movies form the trilogy of Asu Mare, being part of the most viewed movies in Peru but also being criticized hardly because of lack of visual value. You could see how the elements inside the production design shows in a subtle way how the principal character is feeling in certain situations. It will also help to demonstrate the narrative time during the movies. Also it will show the difference on the socioeconomic groups of the capital, Lima. La dirección de arte tiene un papel importante en la elaboración de una producción audiovisual. Se divide en tres categorías, la primera es el diseño de vestuario que contribuye a la construcción estética de un personaje; la segunda es el maquillaje y peinado que caracteriza al actor como el personaje; y la tercera es el diseño de locaciones, que incluye la utilería y el decorado de un ambiente. El objetivo es analizar el rol de la dirección de arte en la representación de la pobreza que se construye en el cine peruano, tomando como ejemplos dos películas peruanas: Rosa Chumbe (2015) y Canción sin nombre (2019). En estas veremos cómo los personajes de bajos recursos son representados mediante las diferentes áreas de la dirección del arte, vestuario, maquillaje y peinado, y escenografía. Esta investigación es de carácter cualitativo, puesto que se utilizarán entrevistas personales como instrumentos de recolección de datos. Asimismo, la investigación contribuye a demostrar si la dirección de arte influye o no en la construcción de estereotipos respecto a la pobreza. / Art direction has an important role during the process of elaboration of an audiovisual production. It is divided into three categories: the first one is costume design which contributes to the aesthetic construction of a character; the second one is hair and makeup that distinguishes the actor as the character and, the last one, set design which includes props and decoration of a location. The main objective is to analyze the role of art direction in the representation of poverty constructed in Peruvian cinema, taking as cases of study two Peruvian movies: Rosa Chumbe (2015) and Song Without a Name (2019). Within these we will see how low-income characters are represented through different areas of art direction: costume, hairstyle and makeup, and scenography. This research is qualitative by nature, due to personal interviews being used as instruments to recollect data. In addition, this research contributes in demonstrating if art direction influences or not in the construction of stereotypes regarding poverty. / Trabajo de investigación
