Cheetah of the Serengeti Plains: A home range analysis

Laver, Peter Norman 03 January 2006 (has links)
Cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) persist under continued conservation threat in small populations mostly in protected areas in an historically reduced geographic range. Home range, a useful trait for threat assessment, species reintroduction, and population estimation, is plastic in cheetah with sizes ranging from 40 km2 to over 1000 km2 depending on location. Previous home range estimates for cheetah used the minimum convex polygon (MCP), assuming asymptotic home ranges and MCP insensitivity to sample size. They reported metrics of home range size and overlap based on only outline methods. I use 6 481 observations of 240 female and 315 male cheetah from > 60 matrilines over 25 years in the Serengeti Plains to investigate lifetime, core, yearly, and seasonal range size with kernel density estimation. I investigate autocorrelation using time to statistical independence of locations. I confront the assumption of asymptotic home ranges by testing the traditional and multiscaled home range predictions and provide a novel method for determining kernel asymptotes. I challenge the notion of Serengeti cheetah as a migratory carnivore with analyses of site fidelity and objectively defined core ranges. I assess year to year and seasonal location shifts, showing that yearly shifting lessens as females age. I provide quantitative evidence for philopatry in female- and juvenile dispersal in male cheetah of the Serengeti Plains. I use simple overlap metrics to show that overlap in lifetime and core ranges is greater in related than unrelated female pairs. I use multi-response permutation procedures (MRPP) to show that overlap in unrelated female pairs varies with season. I use correlation of utilization distributions to show that avoidance is apparent only in unrelated pairs of females. My results call into question previous MCP estimates of cheetah home range size, and provide guidance for future sampling of cheetah locations. My home range results will guide management of this imperiled species and my methodological findings may be general and applicable to a wide range of taxa. / Master of Science

Jerrimar Moraes de Araújo 03 December 2015 (has links)
This work consists the historic report of the origin of Fractal Geometry, and highlighted the figure of Benoît Mandelbrot, identified as pioneer in this area, whose fractal bears his name. Shows the pioneers fractals, as well as the construction of these using the computational tool "Asymptote". It must be said that, from the construction of these, it is noted, easily a intense use of contents present in the curriculum of basic education, such as the calculation of perimeter and area of plane figures, potentiation, in counts problems, among others, they can be addressed in order to start the study of such content or to same deepen it. Finally, we will make use of Mathematical Induction to demonstrate some of the formulas found.

The Concept on dynamic of European geopolitical metamorphosis for perpetual peace since 1945 : The idea of an EU, integral European politie and clever positive international power

Habyarimana, Emmanuel 16 February 2012 (has links)
Notre travail comprend trois parties. / Our work falls into three parts. The first part analyzes and presents the remarkable geopolitical constructions which punctuate the dynamic of European geopolitical metamorphosis since 1945. Since T ESCS to the Treaty of Lisbon via the TEEC and the TEU, the EU doesn’t always manage to heave up level of a European integral politie. It is situated somewhere between the trans-politie and the politie. The mythic fences do not stop to gangrene it path. With the second part, we establish the representative infinitesimal curb of that new process of European geopolitical mutations which demonstrate how far the mythic fences stop the EU to bond beyond the asymptote of perpetual peace. With the elementary catastrophes, since the collision of geopolitical attractors and social networks, it emerge the flux of European soul which once well structured should bring to Europe much more coherence and cohesion necessary to cross the mythic barriers. In the third part, with the scale of international geopolitical powers, we see the EU as only an M+ power. Consequently, we propose the necessary attributes so that EU can change from M+ into an integral European politie as an international geopolitical power, clever and positive.

Underlying Conditions

Eqbal, Mariam 06 May 2013 (has links)
The following is a collection of lines, curves, and dots on a plane, representing words fashioned to communicate my ideas about relationships between the thing and the nothing. This thesis is like a map, a contour drawing, an assortment of lines, speaking my thoughts about things in relation to space and time. As something moving, developing into another thing, as a thing sentient, I am viewing, performing, and processing incremental acts. I am looking at water and I can see my reflection break into a thousand pieces. It is like watching time.

Development of a Variable Camber Compliant Aircraft Tail using Structural Optimization

Good, Matthew G. 21 July 2004 (has links)
The objectives of the research presented in this thesis are the development of a seven degree-of-freedom morphing airplane and the design and integration of a variable camber compliant tail. The morphing airplane was designed and manufactured to study the benefits of large planform changes and flight control morphing. Morphing capabilities of each wing consist of 8 in. wing extension and contraction, 40° of wing sweep and ±20.25° of outboard wing twist in addition to 6 in. of tail extension and contraction. Initial wind-tunnel tests proved that for a large range of lift coefficients, the optimal airplane configuration changes to minimize the drag. Another portion of this research deals with the development of a structural optimization program to design a variable camber compliant tail. The program integrates ANSYS, aerodynamic thin airfoil theory and the Method of Moving Asymptotes to optimize the shape of an airfoil tail for maximum trailing edge deflection. An objective function is formulated to maximize the trailing edge tip deflection subject to stress constraints. The optimal structure needs to be flexible to maximize the tip deflection, but stiff enough to minimize the deflection of the tip due to aerodynamic loading. The results of the structural optimization program created a compliant tail mechanism that can deflect the trailing edge tip with a single actuator ±4.27°. / Master of Science
