Building Relationships : Assessing the quality of the relationship between leaders and followers as an indication of authenticity vs. toxicity

Ferrec, Romain, Oskam, Petrus January 2014 (has links)
Relationships are so entrenched in the social interaction between individuals that most people do not pay attention to them until they experience trouble in their relationship. Humans create new relationships and end old ones all the time in conscious and unconscious processes. This thesis will give a theoretical and practical overview to reveal the process of social interaction which shapes relationships between a leader and a follower. We focus on the necessary components as well as on the process in which the relationship is built. We approach the process of social interaction from both the side of the leader and the side of the follower to create a balanced picture that will provide systematic explanation of this complicated and multidimensional phenomenon. The primary focus of this thesis will be on the origin and development of an authentic, healthy relationship between a leader and a follower.

Nelson, Katia 12 1900 (has links)
Occupational health has been recognized as an important long-term element of global economic development. However, statistical projections suggest dawn concerns on two levels: workers are aging and psychological well-being is deteriorating. To overcome its problems, strong leaders are sought for growing climate of trust as well as the well-being of their employees. This thesis aims to study authentic leadership as a contributor to the work climate and well-being of employees. To this end, two studies were performed. The first study aimed to translate and validate the Authentic Leadership Questionnaire in French. Confirmatory factor analyzes were performed on two samples of Quebec workers (N = 365, N = 859). The results obtained with a shortened version of the instrument show that a second-order structure with four associated factors provides the best fit to the data. The validity of the measure was further supported with authentic leadership correlates. The results revealed that leader’s personal level of authenticity was positively related to the exercise of an authentic leadership, as well as with the leader’s psychological well-being. Furthermore, the expected links between authentic leadership and followers’ well-being, trust and interpersonal justice were supported. No support was found for the link between auto-reveled authentic leadership by the leader and his/her psychological well-being. The second study investigated a mediation model where authentic leadership has been purported to influence psychological well-being through its impact on work climate. Using a sample of 406 nurses, a time-lagged study design was employed to determine the mediational role of work climate in explaining the impact of authentic leadership. A mediation analysis with the use of a bootstrapping technique revealed that work climate mediated the relationship between authentic leadership and psychological well-being at work. These findings indicate that authentic leadership impacts the work climate in a positive manner; thereby, increasing levels of psychological well-being at work. Finally, in conclusion of this thesis endeavour, results are commented, contributions are presented, practical implications are suggested, limits are outlined, and future research are proposed.

The Need for Caring Pedagogies: A personal look at education in depressed economies

Curran, Catherine 01 January 2007 (has links)
By grounding my work in this series of four essays in literary theory, but telling stories to which almost anyone can relate I hope to begin making the connection between sometimes heady academics and everyday working-class Americans. Only when learners understand their circumstances and the need for education, can they begin to take control of what they learn and how they employ that knowledge.

Multimediální aplikace ve výuce francouzského jazyka / Multimedia applications in French language teaching

Sacherová, Jana January 2014 (has links)
TITLE: Multimedia applications in French language teaching SUMMARY: This thesis describes the possibilities of using tablets as educational devices within learning French as a foreign language. The work has a theoretical part and a practical part. In the theoretical part the role of information and communication technologies (ICT) in the educational process is defined. Tablet is characterized and classified in the system of didactic tools. Studies that have dealt with the teaching and learning via tablets are presented and programmes that enable equipping schools with these devices are mentioned. The way of teaching is transforming due to the upcoming educational technology and also the teacher's role in the process of education is changing. The practical part provides a critical review of the applications available in the App Store, which can be used for the development of different language skills in French class and beyond. Furthermore the thesis offers methodological instructions as a teacher's support. Through these materials, lessons containing work with authentic French applications could be introduced in class. The contribution of this thesis is thus both a critical review of selected educational applications that can serve as basic information for newcomers to the environment of multimedia...

Thematic unit on Aztec, Incan and Mayan culture

Gratton, Carly Marie January 1900 (has links)
Master of Arts / Department of Modern Languages / Douglas Benson / The principal objective of this paper is to provide a thematic teaching unit that explores the Aztec, Incan and Mayan cultures of Latin America, designed for a level II Spanish course. It contains theoretical underpinnings for teaching language, culture and literature while incorporating concepts related to the development of communicative competence; processing instruction; the use of scaffolding in the zone of proximal development; target language instruction; and the inclusion of authentic materials and language in the classroom. The classroom management strategies explained and used throughout the unit include pre, during and post-reading activities; small group activities that help to develop communicative competence through negotiation of meaning and interactional feedback; focused tasks and collaborative output tasks; the use of structured input, structured output and information exchange; the PACE approach to grammar teaching; and the incorporation of authentic aural and written texts. Lesson plans for an eighteen day unit consisting of 40 minute classes are outlined; the lesson objective, necessary materials, time needed for each activity, and expected results of each lesson are included. Each lesson activity is made clear through a description of the activity and instructions for the teacher. The daily lesson plans contain authentic and teacher-created materials that can be found in the appendices section. At the end of the thematic unit, students complete cumulative activities that relate indigenous cultures to present-day life in Latin America through investigating the influence of Aztec words on the Spanish and English languages, analyzing a poem about Peru, and reading an article about discrimination against Mayan descendants in Central America, Mexico and the U.S.

Non-Western Art and the Musée du Quai Branly: The Challenge of Authenticity

Bernard, Mary Grace Cathryn 01 May 2014 (has links)
This thesis discusses the recent construction and anthropological collaboration of the Paris museum: Musée du quai Branly (MQB), an art museum dedicated to showcasing art collections specific to aboriginal and indigenous cultures in the Americas, Africa, Asia and Oceania. The opening of MQB in June 2006 raised a plethora of controversial questions concerning the museum’s methods of curatorial display of the art it has made its primary focus. One of the major issues discussed examines the Quai Branly’s authentic, or inauthentic, representation of certain artworks displayed throughout the museum. Thus, the essay raises the questions: does a non-Western object remain authentic once it is exhibited in a Western society’s art museum? To answer this question, the essay explores the various explanations of art and authenticity in order to reach an understandable conclusion of what constitutes an authentic display of non-Western objects in a Western art museum.

Rosén, Aksel January 2019 (has links)

The impact of authentic leadership on the work environment and patient outcomes in hospital settings : A literature study

Tahhan, Burhan January 2019 (has links)
In Sweden, turnover among healthcare professionals is a significant problem in hospital settings. Efficient leadership of healthcare professionals is vital for enhancing the quality and integration of healthcare. Authentic leadership (AL) is a relational leadership style instigated from the field of positive organizational conduct and is asserted to advocate healthy work environments that impact healthcare professional’s efficiency and positive organizational outcomes. This master’s thesis aims to describe the impact of AL on the work environment and patient outcomes in hospital settings. The method is a literature study. Peer-reviewed English or Swedish articles that examined the impact of AL on the work environment and patient outcomes in hospital settings were selected from seven databases. Quality appraisal, data extraction, and analysis were accomplished on the included studies. A total of 26 articles (n=24 quantitative, n=1 qualitative and n=1 mixed method) satisfied the inclusion criteria. Results were evaluated according to the literature review content analysis. Findings support positive relationships between AL and increased optimism and trust among healthcare professionals, job satisfaction and turnover, patient care quality, structural empowerment, and work engagement. Findings were, therefore, consistent with AL theory. Future studies using more diversity in research themes, settings, study populations, organizations, job areas, geographic origins, and theory context are merited. People in positions of influence in healthcare settings and healthcare practitioners can use the findings of this study as a guide to increase awareness of the processes by which AL promotes positive outcomes in the workplace.

The methodological procedures employed for such analysis were bibliographical research and field research, with interviews with the owners of different enterprises, which were three inns in Pirenópolis and a hotel in Goiânia. We proceeded to the analysis of the history of Goiás s culture formation, with the evolution of the various types of hotels, and we also attempted to understand the motivational factors, such as leisure or business, that attract tourists to different spaces spaces that are authentic and, therefore, guardians of an identity, or spaces that simulate some sort of cultural rescue. Such spaces represent either cordiality and hospitality or standardized places that follow international laws or suggest a simulacrum. In this last case, the cultural legacy needf reconstruction. We concluded that the tourism in Pirenópolis is representative of a historic and cultural legacy, whereas in Goiânia the metropolis tourism takes place with the same dynamics as the city, in a frantic way, without giving room to contemplations, meeting the needs of another tourist segment. In sum, the present research does not aim at exhausting the subject; on the contrary, we believe that the study of hosting means reflecting on one of the physiological needs that are innate in human beings.
