Linear Power-Efficient RF Amplifier with Partial Positive FeedbackKing, Matthew E. 01 June 2012 (has links) (PDF)
Over the last decade, the number of mobile wireless devices on the market has increased substantially. New “multi-carrier” modulation schemes, such as OFDM, WCDMA, and WiMAX, have been developed to accommodate the increasing number of wireless subscribers and the demand for faster data rates within the limited commercial frequency spectrum. These complex modulation schemes create signals with high peak-to-average power ratios (PAPR), exhibiting rapid changes in the signal magnitude. To accommodate these high-PAPR signals, RF power amplifiers in mobile devices must operate under backed-off gain conditions, resulting in poor power efficiency. Various efficiency-enhancement solutions have been realized for backed-off devices to combat this issue.
A brief overview of one of the more extensively researched solutions, the Doherty amplifier, is given, and its inherent limitations are discussed. A recently proposed amplifier topology that provides the efficiency benefits of the Doherty amplifier, while overcoming some of the fundamental problems that plague the standard Doherty architecture, is investigated. A step-by-step design methodology is presented and confirmed by extensive simulation in Agilent ADS. A design example, tuned for maximum efficiency at peak output power, is implemented on a PCB and tested to verify the validity of the proposed circuit configuration.

This work concerns the development of high repetition rate femtosecond lasers with high average power (>10 W)and energies in excess of 100 μJ. Such lasers are paramount for the development of new industrial applications(athermal micro-drilling, eye surgery, ...) and for fundamental research on high repetition rate laser matter interactionstudies. After a brief introduction and the state of the art summary on high-average power femtosecond laser with ytterbiumdoped materials, a compact high-average power femtosecond laser with a large mode area microstructured rod typeamplifier will be presented. It will browse the main limitations in terms of energy and average power. Limitationsare mainly due to the strong confinement of the electric field propagating in the fibre core leading to non-linear effectsaccumulated during the amplification. On the other hand, for larger core diameter (> 70 μm), the fundamental modeguiding (TEM00) is very weak and thus very sensitive to the internal thermal load of the fibre. This laser source has been used in two specific applications: athermal drilling of thick stainless steel plate for mineclearing(an application of interest for the Direction Générale de l’Armement) and High order Harmonics Generationat high repetition rate (related to CELIA activities). These two applications are presented in the third chapter. In order to stretch the limits and generate more energetic and a shorter pulse, a new amplification scheme has beenproposed, namely high brightness optical pumping of ytterbium doped materials. This concept presented in the lastchapter benefits from the development of high average power single-mode fibre lasers source emitting at 976 nm.This amplification scheme allowed us to realize a high average power Kerr-lens oscillator delivering pulses with apulse duration below than 70 fs and an average power of 2.3W at a repetition rate of 73 MHz. In a second phase, wealso developed a « booster » amplifier with a high single- pass-gain. These two results have been obtained by usingYb-doped CaF2 crystals. This material presents the advantage to have a very broad emission bandwidth (> 60nm)suitable to generate and amplify femtosecond pulses and to be compatible with high average power laser due to hisvery good thermal conductivity.

Experimental and Numerical Studies of Mist Cooling with Thin Evaporating Subcooled Liquid FilmsNovak, Vladimir 11 April 2006 (has links)
An experimental and numerical investigation has been conducted to examine steady, internal, nozzle-generated, gas/liquid mist cooling in vertical channels with ultra-thin, evaporating subcooled liquid films. Interest in this research has been motivated by the need for a highly efficient cooling mechanism in high-power lasers for inertial fusion reactor applications. The aim is to quantify the effects of various operating and design parameters, viz. liquid atomization nozzle design (i.e. spray geometry, droplet size distribution, etc.), heat flux, liquid mass fraction, film thickness, carrier gas velocity, temperature, and humidity, injected liquid temperature, gas/liquid combinations, channel geometry, length, and wettability, and flow direction, on mist cooling effectiveness.
A fully-instrumented experimental test facility has been designed and constructed. The facility includes three cylindrical and two rectangular electrically-heated test sections with different unheated entry lengths. Water is used as the mist liquid with air, or helium, as the carrier gas. Three types of mist generating nozzles with significantly different spray characteristics are used. Numerous experiments have been conducted; local heat transfer coefficients along the channels are obtained for a wide range of operating conditions. The data indicate that mist cooling can increase the heat transfer coefficient by more than an order of magnitude compared to forced convection using only the carrier gas. The data obtained in this investigation will allow designers of mist-cooled high heat flux engineering systems to predict their performance over a wide range of design and operating parameters.
Comparison has been made between the data and predictions of a modified version of the KIVA-3V code, a mechanistic, three-dimensional computer program for internal, transient, dispersed two-phase flow applications. Good agreement has been obtained for downward mist flow at moderate heat fluxes; at high heat fluxes, the code underpredicts the local heat transfer coefficients and does not predict the onset of film rupture. For upward mist flow, the code underpredicts the local heat transfer coefficients and, contrary to experimental observations, predicts early dryout at the test section exit.

On The Peak-To-Average-Power-Ratio Of Affine Linear CodesPaul, Prabal 12 1900 (has links)
Employing an error control code is one of the techniques to reduce the Peak-to-Average Power Ratio (PAPR) in an Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing system; a well known class of such codes being the cosets of Reed-Muller codes. In this thesis, classes of such coset-codes of arbitrary linear codes are considered. It has been proved that the size of such a code can be doubled with marginal/no increase in the PAPR. Conditions for employing this method iteratively have been enunciated. In fact this method has enabled to get the optimal coset-codes. The PAPR of the coset-codes of the extended codes is obtained from the PAPR of the corresponding coset-codes of the parent code. Utility of a special type of lengthening is established in PAPR studies

Previous issue date: 2015-04-28 / In this work we focus on tests for the parameter of an endogenous variable in a weakly identi ed instrumental variable regressionmodel. We propose a new unbiasedness restriction for weighted average power (WAP) tests introduced by Moreira and Moreira (2013). This new boundary condition is motivated by the score e ciency under strong identi cation. It allows reducing computational costs of WAP tests by replacing the strongly unbiased condition. This latter restriction imposes, under the null hypothesis, the test to be uncorrelated to a given statistic with dimension given by the number of instruments. The new proposed boundary condition only imposes the test to be uncorrelated to a linear combination of the statistic. WAP tests under both restrictions to perform similarly numerically. We apply the di erent tests discussed to an empirical example. Using data from Yogo (2004), we assess the e ect of weak instruments on the estimation of the elasticity of inter-temporal substitution of a CCAPM model.

Crest Factor Reduction using High Level SynthesisMahmood, Hassan January 2017 (has links)
Modern wireless mobile communication technology has made noticeable improvements from the technologies in the past but is still plagued by poor power efficiency of power amplifiers found in today’s base stations. One of the factors that affect the power efficiency adversely comes from modern modulation techniques like orthogonal frequency division multiplexing which result in signals with high peak to average power ratio, also known as the crest factor. Crest factor reduction algorithms are used to solve this problem. However, the dominant method of hardware description for synthesis has been to start with writing register transfer level code which gives a very fixed implementation that may not be the optimal solution. This thesis project is focused on developing a peak cancellation crest factor reduction system, using a high-level language as the system design language, and synthesizing it using high-level synthesis. The aim is to find out if highlevel synthesis design methodology can yield increased productivity and improved quality of results for such designs as compared to the design methodology that requires the system to be implemented at the register transfer level. Design space exploration is performed to find an optimal design with respect to area. Finally, a few parameters are presented to measure the performance of the system, which helps in tuning it. The results of design space exploration helped in choosing the best possible implementation out of four different configurations. The final implementation that resulted from high-level synthesis had an area comparable to the previous register transfer level implementation. It was also concluded that, for this design, the high-level synthesis design methodology increased productivity and decreased design time.

Performance evaluation and protocol design of fixed-rate and rateless coded relaying networksNikjah, Reza 06 1900 (has links)
The importance of cooperative relaying communication in substituting for, or complementing,
multiantenna systems is described, and a brief literature review is presented.
Amplify-and-forward (AF) and decode-and-forward (DF) relaying are investigated and
compared for a dual-hop relay channel. The optimal strategy, source and relay optimal
power allocation, and maximum cooperative gain are determined for the relay channel. It
is shown that while DF relaying is preferable to AF relaying for strong source-relay links,
AF relaying leads to more gain for strong source-destination or relay-destination links.
Superimposed and selection AF relaying are investigated for multirelay, dual-hop relaying.
Selection AF relaying is shown to be globally strictly outage suboptimal. A necessary
condition for the selection AF outage optimality, and an upper bound on the probability of
this optimality are obtained. A near-optimal power allocation scheme is derived for superimposed
AF relaying.
The maximum instantaneous rates, outage probabilities, and average capacities of multirelay,
dual-hop relaying schemes are obtained for superimposed, selection, and orthogonal
DF relaying, each with parallel channel cooperation (PCC) or repetition-based cooperation
(RC). It is observed that the PCC over RC gain can be as much as 4 dB for the outage
probabilities and 8.5 dB for the average capacities. Increasing the number of relays deteriorates
the capacity performance of orthogonal relaying, but improves the performances of
the other schemes.
The application of rateless codes to DF relaying networks is studied by investigating
three single-relay protocols, one of which is new, and three novel, low complexity multirelay
protocols for dual-hop networks. The maximum rate and minimum energy per bit and
per symbol are derived for the single-relay protocols under a peak power and an average
power constraint. The long-term average rate and energy per bit, and relay-to-source usage
ratio (RSUR), a new performance measure, are evaluated for the single-relay and multirelay
protocols. The new single-relay protocol is the most energy efficient single-relay scheme
in most cases. All the multirelay protocols exhibit near-optimal rate performances, but are
vastly different in the RSUR.
Several future research directions for fixed-rate and rateless coded cooperative systems,
and frameworks for comparing these systems, are suggested. / Communications
