A Região Metropolitana de São Paulo (RMSP) sofre de sérios problemas de congestionamento, assim como muitas outras cidades de grande porte. Uma possível solução, proposta por pesquisadores de transportes, economia e ciências ambientais, é a implantação de um sistema de congestion charging, chamada no Brasil de pedágio urbano. Um dos objetivos do presente trabalho foi estabelecer os conceitos relacionados a este assunto e ilustrar as principais questões relacionadas à sua implantação. Espera-se que este trabalho possa auxiliar o desenvolvimento de estudos de avaliação da viabilidade e de impactos de sistemas propostos de congestion charging. Para atingir este objetivo, toca-se em diversos assuntos, como a definição de congestionamento e as formas de medi-lo, a base conceitual e teórica dos sistemas de congestion charging e seus diversos esquemas de diferenciação. São expostas também as medidas de mitigação de congestionamento que já foram implantadas na RMSP, quais foram os estudos já desenvolvidos considerando este tipo de política para a RMSP, e casos em que sistemas de congestion charging já foi implantado. Neste trabalho, desenvolveu-se também um modelo de escolha discreta a partir dos dados da Pesquisa Origem e Destino 2007 do METRÔ, onde pessoas deveriam escolher entre \"Transporte Coletivo\" e \"Transporte Público\". Este modelo foi utilizado para avaliar o potencial de impacto na divisão modal e de arrecadação de um congestion charge aplicado ao centro expandido de São Paulo. Adverte-se, porém, que os resultados obtidos são meramente ilustrativos. Mostra-se, também, que é possível avaliar a capacidade ociosa do sistema de transporte coletivo a partir dos dados disponíveis de bilhetagem e de GPS dos ônibus. Este processo é exemplificado através do cálculo de capacidade de uma única viagem de um único ônibus, dada a dificuldade de automatização deste processo para abranger toda a frota. / The São Paulo Metropolitan Region (SPMR) suffers from severe traffic congestion, as do many other large-scale urban areas around the world. A possible solution to this issue, which has been suggested by transportation, economics and environmental researchers, is the implementation of a congestion charging system. One of the objectives of this project is to establish clear concepts and shed light on the main issues regarding these systems by means of a comprehensive literary review. It is expected that this project may help the development of in-depth studies carried in order to evaluate the viability and impacts of congestion charging proposals. In order to achieve this goal, many subjects are addressed, such as the definition of congestion, how its measured, the theoretical backgrounds that support congestion charging schemes, their different degrees of differentiation, which policies were enacted in order to reduce traffic congestion in São Paulo, what considerations and studies have already been developed for Brazil and São Paulo regarding these systems and where have these systems been successfully installed. Later chapters deal with another goal of this project: estimating how a congestion charging system would affect SPMR. This was achieved through a multinomial logit model, where decision-makers choose between \"Public Transportation\" and \"Private Automobile\". The results presented at this phase are merely indicative of certain tendencies and should not be considered final. This project also attempts to show that given the available Automated Fare Collection (AFC) data and Automated Vehicle Location (AVL) data, it is possible to estimate the current public transportation system\'s unused capacity. The author shows this by calculating the capacity of one bus trip using these data, but also explains the difficulties of expanding this analysis to the whole of SPMR\'s public transportation system.

Simulation and validation of in-cylinder combustion for a heavy-duty Otto gas engine using 3D-CFD techniqueArimboor Chinnan, Jacob January 2018 (has links)
Utsläpp från bilar har spelat stor roll de senaste decennierna. Detta har lett till ökad användning av Otto gasmotorer som använder naturgas som bränsle. Nya motordesigner behöver optimeras för att förbättra motorens effektivitet. Ett effektivt sätt att göra detta på är genom användningen av simuleringar för att minska ledtiden i motorutvecklingen. Verifiering och validering av simuleringarna spelar stor roll för att bygga förtroende för och förutsägbarhet hos simuleringsresultaten. Syftet med detta examensarbete är att föreslå förbränningsmodellparametrarna efter utvärdering av olika kombinationer av förbrännings- och tändmodeller för Otto förbränning, vad gäller beräkningstid och noggrannhet. In-cylindertrycksspår från simulering och mätning jämförs för att hitta den bästa kombinationen av förbrännings- och tändmodell. Inverkan av tändtid, antal motorcykler och randvillkor för simuleringsresultatet studeras också. Resultaten visar att ECFM-förbränningsmodellen förutsäger simuleringsresultaten mer exakt när man jämför med mätningarna. Effekten av tändningstiden på olika kombinationer av förbrännings- och tändningsmodell utvärderas också. Stabiliteten hos olika förbränningssimuleringsmodeller diskuteras också under körning för fler motorcykler. Jämförelse av beräkningstid görs även för olika kombinationer av förbrännings- och tändmodeller. Resultaten visar också att flamspårningsmetoden med Euler är mer känslig för cellstorlek och kvalitet hos simuleringsnätet, jämfört med övriga studerade modeller. Rekommendationer och förslag ges om nät- och simulerings-inställningar för att prediktera förbränningen på ett så bra sätt som möjligt. Några möjliga förbättringsområden ges som framtida arbete för att förbättra noggrannheten i simuleringsresultaten. / Emission from automobiles has been gaining importance for past few decades. This has gained a lot of impetus in search for alternate fuels among the automotive manufacturers. This led to the increase usage of Otto gas engine which uses natural gas as fuel. New engine designs have to be optimized for improving the engine efficiency. This led to usage of virtual simulations for reducing the lead time in the engine development. The verification and validation of actual phenomenon in the virtual simulations with respect to the physical measurements was quite important. The aim of this master thesis is to suggest the combustion model parameters after evaluating various combination of combustion and ignition models in terms of computational time and accuracy. In-cylinder pressure trace from the simulation is compared with the measurement in order to find the nest suited combination of combustion and ignition models. The influence of ignition timing, number of engine cycles and boundary conditions on the simulation results are also studied. Results showed that ECFM combustion model predicts the simulation results more accurately when compare to the measurements. Impact of ignition timing on various combination of combustion and ignition model is also assessed. Stability of various combustion simulation models is also discussed while running for more engine cycles. Comparison of computational time is also made for various combination of combustion and ignition models. Results also showed that the flame tracking method using Euler is dependent on the mesh resolution and the mesh quality. Recommendations and suggestions are given about the mesh and simulation settings for predicting the combustion simulation accurately. Some possible areas of improvement are given as future work for improving the accuracy of the simulation results.

Evaluation of transit signal priority effectiveness using automatic vehicle location dataSundstrom, Carl Andrew 01 April 2008 (has links)
Transit Signal Priority (TSP) is an operational strategy that can speed the movement of in-service transit vehicles (typically bus, light rail, or streetcar) through traffic signals. By reducing control delay at signalized intersections, TSP can improve schedule adherence and travel time efficiency while minimizing impacts to normal traffic operations. These benefits improve the quality of service thereby making it more attractive to choice riders. A TSP system can also allow for fewer buses on the same due to travel time reductions and increased reliability, thus reducing transit operating costs.
Much of the previous research on TSP has focused on signal control strategies and bus stop placement with little of it analyzing the effectiveness of the system using actual data. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the system using a bus route corridor in Portland, Oregon through real-time Automatic Vehicle Locator data. Key measures that TSP is promoted to improve are evaluated, including travel time, schedule adherence and variability. The TSP system on data was collected for two weeks and is compared to an adjacent two weeks of bus data with the TSP system turned off such that there is no skewing of data due to changes in traffic volumes or transit ridership.
This research has shown, that on certain corridors there may be little to no benefit towards TSP implementation and may possibly provide some disbenefit. The direct comparison for TSP on and off scenarios completed for this research yielded no significant differences in reduction in travel time or schedule adherence performance. An additional interesting result was that the standard deviation of the results did not have any specific tendencies with the TSP on or off. Based on these findings, recommendations are made to increase the effectiveness of the system.

Previous issue date: 2006 / Resumo: Este trabalho visa destacar as vantagens e os pontos que devem ser tratados em um sistema AVL (Automatic Vehicle Location), baseado nas tecnologias de posicionamento por satélites e transmissão de dados via rede de telefonia móvel, quando aplicado ao transporte coletivo por fretamento. Neste sentido, três linhas de ônibus fretado que atendem funcionários da Universidade Estadual de Campinas foram monitorados por um período de 07 semanas no trajeto bairro-universidade. O módulo de rastreamento possibilitou a coleta eletrônica de dados de operação do veículo. Também foram registrados, manual e eletronicamente, informações sobre os usuários do serviço. Os dados coletados foram transmitidos via GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) para a central de controle e disponibilizados na rede mundial de computadores em tempo real. Foram verificados os pontos de parada e os itinerários e foi feita uma análise financeira das linhas de fretamento da Unicamp monitoradas durante a pesquisa. O monitoramento de transporte coletivo fretado, relatado neste trabalho de maneira provavelmente inédita, possibilitou a obtenção de dados para gerência e controle do serviço de fretamento. Observou-se, como esperado, que o sistema permite de maneira eficiente o acompanhamento da operação com registro de posições e velocidades desenvolvidas pelo veículo monitorado e dos locais de parada e itinerários cumpridos. No caso em questão, entre as vantagens obtidas destaca-se a possibilidade de realizar uma fiscalização mais efetiva, tanto pela operadora do transporte, como pela universidade, controlando os horários programados, os itinerários e os passageiros. São apresentadas sugestões para melhoria do sistema de rastreamento utilizado / Abstract: This research aims to point out the advantages and what still needs to be improved in an Automatic Vehicle Location ¿ AVL - system applied to the charter bus service. The sample of three charter bus lines serving Campinas University (Unicamp)¿s workers on their way from home to office, in a seven weak period. The AVL equipment was used to collect electronic operational data. Users information were collected automatically and manually. These data were sent through GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) to the control station and become available in the internet in real time. The itinerary and the bus stops were verified, and a financial analysis of these three lines were made. This could conclude that the system allows monitoring vehicle position and speed, bus stops, traffic points, etc. - supplying data for management and control of the service. It has showed that AVL, when applied in the Unicamp¿s fleet, support better management and control of routes and timetables. The Complexity of Splay Trees and Skip ListsAdelyar, Sayed Hassan January 2008 (has links)
Magister Curationis / Binary search trees (BSTs) are important data structures which are widely used
in various guises. Splay trees are a specific kind of binary search tree, one without
explicit balancing. Skip lists use more space than BSTs and are related to them
in terms of much of their run-time behavior.
Even though binary search trees have been used for about half a century, there
are still many open questions regarding their run-time performance and algorith mic complexity. In many instances, their worst-case, average-case, and best-case
behaviors are unknown and need further research. Our analysis provides a basis
for selecting more suitable data structures and algorithms for specific processes
and applications.
We contrast the empirical behavior of splay trees and skip lists with their
theoretical behavior. In particular we explore when splay trees outperform skip
lists and vice versa.
The performance of a splay tree depends on the history of accesses to its el ements. On the other hand, the performance of a skip list depends on an indepen dent randomization of the height of links that lead to specific elements. Therefore,
probabilistic methods are used to analyze the operation of splay trees and skip
lists.
Our main results are that splay trees are faster for sorted insertion, where
AVL trees are faster for random insertion. For searching, skip lists are faster than
single class top-down splay trees, but two-class and multi-class top-down splay
trees can behave better than skip lists.

Evaluating ITS Investments in Public Transportation: A Proposed Framework and Plan for the OmniLink Route Deviation ServiceLee, Jennifer Ann 09 September 2002 (has links)
When implementing an intelligent transportation system (ITS), stakeholders often overlook the importance of evaluating the system once it is in place. Determining the extent to which the objectives of an investment have been met is important to not only the agency involved, but also to other agencies, so that lessons are learned and mistakes are not repeated in future projects. An effective evaluation allows a transit provider to identify and address areas that could use improvement. Agencies implementing ITS investments often have different goals, needs, and concerns that they hope their project will address and consequently the development of a generic evaluation plan is difficult to develop. While it is recognized that the U.S. Department of Transportation has developed guidelines to aid agencies in evaluating such investments, this research is intended to complement these guidelines by assisting in the evaluation of a site specific ITS investment. It presents an evaluation framework and plan that provides a systematic method for assessing the potential impacts associated with the project by defining objectives, measures, analysis recommendations, and data requirements. The framework developed specifically addresses the ITS investment on the OmniLink local route deviation bus service in Prince William County, Virginia, but could be used as a basis for the evaluation of similar ITS investments. The OmniLink ITS investment includes an automatic vehicle location (AVL) system, mobile data terminals (MDTs), and computer-aided dispatch (CAD) technology. / Master of Science

Many cities suffer from problems with high traffic flows in the city centers which leads to a desire to get more people to choose public transport over cars. For many car drivers, the main reason to take the car is the convenience and time efficiency; the price is often of less importance. The public transport providers should, therefore, strive to improve their Level of Service (LOS). A general process that can be used by public transport providers or other stakeholders to evaluate the LOS in a public transport system based on Automated Vehicle Location (AVL) data is developed and presented in this thesis.The process values the quality and suitability of the AVL data, propose which KPIs to use and how to use the results to find possible improvements. Four different types of erroneous data were discovered: outliers in position, outliers in speed, outliers in travel time and general errors. KPIs are developed in three main areas: on-time performance, travel time distribution and speed, where each KPI is divided into several sub-areas.

No Brasil existe a perspectiva de crescimento expressivo do volume de dados a ser processado pelas prestadoras de serviços de rastreamento em decorrência do aumento natural do uso de sistemas de rastreamento e também para atender a Resolução 330 de 2009 e Deliberação 135 de 30/01/2013 do Conselho Nacional de Trânsito (CONTRAN). Este crescimento gera a necessidade da incorporação de ferramentas analíticas nos sistemas de gerenciamento do rastreamento e monitoramento de veículos e na gestão de risco, para aumentar a sua eficiência e atender o crescimento do mercado. O objetivo desta dissertação é de propor uma metodologia que permita caracterizar o comportamento de movimentação de um veículo, com a finalidade de auxiliar o processo de tomada de decisão no gerenciamento e monitoramento de veículos. A caracterização do comportamento de movimentação do veículo foi feita pela geração de um modelo analítico do comportamento de movimentação, coletando os dados pretéritos da posição espacial e temporal. Este modelo baseia-se na movimentação e considera os aspectos comportamentais espaciais e temporais de forma independente. The behavior characterization generates reports able to identify the spatial and temporal behavior of the monitored vehicle for a given level of reliability.

Aerodynamic Analysis with Athena Vortex Lattice (AVL)Budziak, Kinga January 2015 (has links) (PDF)
This project evaluates the suitability and practicality of the program Athena Vortex Lattice (AVL) by Mark Drela.
A short user guide was written to make it easier (especially for students) to get started with the program AVL.
AVL was applied to calculate the induced drag and the Oswald factor.
In a first task, AVL was used to calculate simple wings of different aspect ratio A and taper ratio lambda.
The Oswald factor was calculated as a function f(lambda) in the same way as shown by HOERNER.
Compared to HOERNER's function, the error never exceed 7.5%.
Surprisingly, the function f(lambda) was not independent of aspect ratio, as could be assumed from HOERNER.
Variations of f(lambda) with aspect ratio were studied and general results found.
In a second task, the box wing was investigated. Box wings of different h/b ratio: 0.31, 0.62, and 0.93 were calculated in AVL.
The induced drag and Oswald factor in all these cases was calculated.
An equation, generally used in the literature, describes the box wing's Oswald factor with parameters k1, k2, k3 and k4.
These parameters were found from results obtained with AVL by means of the Excel Solver.
In this way the curve k = f(h/b) was plotted.
The curve was compared with curves with various theories and experiments conducted prior by other students.
The curve built based on AVL fits very well with the curve from HOERNER, PRANDTL and a second experiment made in the wind tunnel at HAW Hamburg.
