Estudo comparativo de duas populações de capivaras (Hydrochaeris hydrochaeris) no município de Pirassununga, SP / Comparative study of two capybara (Hydrochaeris hydrochaeris) populations in the district of Pirassununga, SPVargas, Flavia Carolina 14 September 2005 (has links)
The present research aimed the knowledge of the factors that allow the high ecological densities of capybaras through the population dynamics comparison of two capybara groups in the district of Pirassununga, SP (Campus Administrativo da Universidade de São Paulo USP/Pirassununga and Centro de Pesquisa e Gestão de Recursos Pesqueiros e Continentais CEPTA/Ibama), intending to propose forward a management methodology for capybara population control in the State of São Paulo. The populations monitoring was carried out through direct count of animals during 15 months, which played the main role to determine the population dynamics. Fixed traps were used to allow the weightings, sex definitions and identification through microchips, and also to know the age distribution and sex ratios. It was used bait inside the traps to attract animals and thus make direct counting and capture possible. To analyze population dynamics it was used the population ecological densities comparisons (statistically and descriptively) and also their rates of increase. It was detected social dominance hierarchy inside the traps, thus only the dominant part of population could be caught. Females represented the majority among captured animals. Satellites individuals and new groups were seen during observations and their existence might characterize a biological system of metapopulation. The descriptive and statistic comparisons of population ecological densities, as well as their rates of increase showed population superiority of CEPTA/Ibamas group probably for its bigger reproduction effort detected, which possibly receives influence of anthropogenic and water abundant habitats of CEPTA/Ibama.

Bait Shyness and Neophobia in Several Species of Osteichthyes: An Extension of Taste Aversion Studies to the Superclass PicesRoberts, Brent W. 01 May 1978 (has links)
Three experiments were conducted with five species of tropical fish to investigate the phenomena of taste aversion and food neophobia. In addition, an experiment determined specifically if position in the tank could acquire conditioned aversive properties.
In Experiment 1 , four habituated fish were fed novel meat-flavored pellets on the treatment day. Six were made ill within 30, 60, or 90 minutes (2 subjects each) by intragastric administration of syrup or Epicac. The following day all were fed familiar commercial pellets. On the second day after treatment, all were offered the meat-flavored pellets. Results showed longer latencies, more tasting, and decreased consumption of novel pellets. All measures differed significantly for the treatment subjects compared to their own baseline and controls.
Experiment II demonstrated food neophobia in four in experienced fish. After habituation they were fed novel meat-flavored pellets but not made ill (day 0). On day 1 and 2 they received familiar diet and were made ill after the feeding on day 2. On day 3 they received familiar food again and no change in approach latency, testing response, or quantity consumed occurred. On day 4, they were offered the novel meat-flavored pellets which they refused. These results indicate that the fish associated the illness with the more "novel" food even though their familiar diet was temporally closer to the illness.
In Experiment III five species of naive fish were habituated to 20-gallon tanks and made ill after eating in one end and not in the other. The same food was us ed in both ends. The "illness end" could have taken on discriminitive properties and food consumption there should have decreased, as opposed to the other "safe end". The results indicated that "place" did not acquire aversive discriminitive properties. Food consumption decreased in quantity, food approach latencies increased and length of tasting bouts increased in both ends.
These experiments were the first to use these species of fish in this type of research. The results extend the phenomena of taste aversion and food neophobia. In addition, Experiment III systematically replicated the hypothesis of relevant relations between stimuli and showed that it is easier to learn certain consequences with certain cues than with others. In this case illness was quickly associated with taste but "place" was treated as irrelevant.

Maximising the effectiveness of aerial 1080 control of possums (Trichosurus vulpecula)Morgan, David R. January 2004 (has links)
Aerial control using 1080 (sodium monofluoroacetate) baits is widely used in New Zealand for the control of introduced brushtail possums (Trichosurus vulpecula), with the aim of protecting national conservation and agricultural values from these damaging pests. This thesis integrates research, completed over 25 years, that was motivated by growing recognition in the 1970s of the extent of possum impacts and the need to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the control operation. Field research assessed the palatability of three types of cereal-based pellet baits and carrot baits in different regions, habitat types and seasons. Palatability was assessed by the consumption of the different bait types presented independently of each other on 15-30 plots, with rotation of bait types at plots on successive nights to provide equal exposure to each bait type. There was regional variation in possums' bait preferences, possibly reflecting genotypic differences, whereas seasonal variation was less evident. Carrot bait was preferred or equally preferred to cereal bait in 14 out of 20 field trials. The proportion of possums eating baits was then investigated by, firstly, developing a technique for tracing bait acceptance using rhodamine B, a UV-fluorescent dye. In four field trials, more than 95% of possums accepted three types of dye-marked bait, eliminating bait refusal as a major reason for low kills in winter control operations. In a fifth trial, conducted in summer, only 68% of possums accepted bait suggesting that seasonal availability of favoured foods may influence bait acceptance. Since possums must encounter baits before deciding whether to eat them, field studies were undertaken to assess the coverage achieved in normal aerial baiting operations. Large gaps, up to 400 m in width, were often found between baiting swaths; these could allow some possums to survive. A controlled field experiment, using acceptance of rhodamine-dyed bait as a measure of effectiveness, showed that bait distribution was least accurate where flight paths were not marked. Where gaps of 100 m between flight paths were deliberately created, bait acceptance was slower and less than where coverage was complete. Sowing baits at 3 kg/ha was as effective as at 10 kg/ha, indicating the potential for substantially reducing operational costs by using machinery capable of faultlessly distributing baits at low rates. Navigational guidance systems were evaluated and found to improve the accuracy of bait distribution. During 1993-1997, when a lower sowing rate of 5 kg/ha was adopted operationally by regional managers, control effectiveness was unchanged but annual savings of around $9 million accrued. Because of the lack of suitable sowing machinery, a bucket was developed to permit faultless distribution of baits at lower rates, demonstrating the possibility of yet further cost-savings. The possibility of seasonal food availability affecting bait acceptance was investigated in three different forest habitats. Dyed baits were aerially distributed on 100 ha at each site in each season over two years. In each trial, fat-based condition indices of possums were calculated and the abundance of possum-preferred plant foods described. Bait acceptance was consistently high (85-100%) in the 24 trials, and was not influenced by either condition or availability of preferred foods. It seems likely that seasonal variation in operational effectiveness is caused by either the availability of sharply seasonal, scarce foods that possums may feed on intensively for brief periods, or by warmer temperatures that render 1080 less effective. The influence of 1080 on acceptance of (rhodamine-dyed) baits was investigated in a field trial. Examination of possums for dye-marking showed that 25% of possums refused to eat either a lethal quantity of bait or any bait at all, compared with 98% of possums eating non-toxic bait. This indicated that 1080 is aversive to possums, which is a potential major reason for their surviving control operations. Pen trials were therefore conducted to further examine the problem and to seek solutions. Toxic carrot baits were rejected by 27.5% of possums, equally by smell and taste aversion, whereas toxic cereal pellets were rejected by 34%, mainly by taste aversion. Orange and cinnamon were shown to be among the most preferred of 42 flavours tested and, when applied to toxic baits, 1080 was effectively masked. Bait refusal was reduced to ≤7%, the same as that recorded for possums presented with flavoured non-toxic baits. For long-term control of possum populations, aerial 1080 baiting can be used sequentially with other poisoning methods. However, the compatibility of these methods is dependent on the likelihood of possums developing bait shyness if sublethally dosed. Studies were therefore conducted to characterise and compare the four main toxicants used (1080, cyanide, cholecalciferol and brodifacoum) for induction and mitigation of bait shyness. Shyness was induced in approximately 80% of possums sublethally dosed with cyanide, 60% with 1080, 20% with cholecalciferol, and 0% with brodifacoum. Cyanide and 1080 shyness were found to persist in many possums for at least 12 and 24 months, respectively. Use of alternative bait types, and of baits containing an alternative slow-acting toxin (brodifacoum) were shown to be effective ways of overcoming shyness. This, and other related research, is reviewed to provide operational specifications that maximise the likelihood that all targeted possums will (i) encounter bait, (ii) eat it, and (iii) die. The likely future use of aerial 1080 baiting is described and the technological, economic, environmental and social constraints on its sustainability are discussed. Finally, the uptake of the research by possum managers is considered, and areas identified in the thesis where information is incomplete are summarised as prioritised topics for further research.

Implications of Relative Ant Abundance and Diversity for the Management of Solenopsis Invicta Buren with Broadcast BaitsCalixto, Alejandro Antonio 15 May 2009 (has links)
Higher densities of S. invicta in the United States relative to South America are
explained mainly by the absence of natural enemies and low interspecific competition
(IC). Despite advances in S. invicta management, broadcast insecticide baits remain as
the primary tool for effective control. I studied interspecific interactions of ants and the
use of baits on the management of S. invicta to test the following hypotheses: 1) relative
abundance of native ants increases ~25% for bait treated sites compared to untreated, 2)
behavioral dominance by S. invicta decreases ~10% in bait treated sites compared to
untreated, and, 3) foraging by S. invicta on insecticide baits is higher ~10% in low native
ant densities areas compared to high densities.
Experiments were conducted on three sites with different densities of native ants
(low, medium, high), but with similar densities of S. invicta. An enhanced BACI
(Before/After-Control/Impact) design was used. Experimental units consisted of 0.4 ha
plots. Three treatments were randomly assigned to units and replicated four times; 1)
Slow acting bait, 2) Fast acting bait, 3) Untreated Control. Samples and observations
were collected for several weeks before/after the treatments to account for temporal variation and to determine rates of reinvasion. Ants were monitored using pitfalls and
food lures. Interspecific competition was determined by applying placebo bait. Results
indicate that different management methods did not impact resident ants when they are
at low and medium densities and that S. invicta is greatly affected; at high native ant
density, competition for these baits is observed affecting both natives and S. invicta.
Reinvasion of S. invicta was reduced in areas of low and medium native ant densities
previously treated with baits and native ant abundance increased by ~25%. At high
native ant densities, reinvasion of S. invicta was similar to Control sites. I conclude: 1)
properly used, baits can help in recovery of native ant species that then compete with S.
invicta; however, rote re-treatments may have a negative impact on restored populations.
2) “bait failures” may be due to interspecific competition when initial native ant
densities are high. Preliminary management considerations and recommendations are
presented.

Investigations into the reproductive performance and larval rearing of the Brown shrimp, Farfantepenaeus aztecus, using closed recirculating systemsGandy, Ryan Leighton 17 February 2005 (has links)
The effects of unilateral eyestalk ablation, diets and sex ratios were evaluated on two wild populations of Farfantepenaeus aztecus in a closed recirculating maturation system. Ovarian development and spawning frequencies of ablated females in both studies were higher than the non-ablated females. Replacement of bloodworms in maturation diet with enriched adult Artemia sp. had no negative effect on the number of eggs spawned and resulted in increased hatch and survival rates from Nauplius I to Zoea I. Life span of ablated females fed enriched Artemia sp. was longer than ablated females fed bloodworms. Replacement of the expensive bloodworm diet component with adult enriched Artemia sp. is possible without negative impact on female reproductive performance. Reducing male to female ratio from 2:1 to 1:1 resulted in a 1.25% decrease in spawning activities of ablated females. The life cycle of pond-raised F1 generation F. aztecus also was completed in the closed recirculating system using unilateral eyestalk ablation as previously described. This study found diets that
contained an enriched adult Artemia sp. component performed superior (i.e. hatch rate, nauplii and zoea production) to a diet containing bloodworms. Six consecutive larval rearing trials evaluated changes in select water quality indicators and their effect on growth, survival, and stress tolerance of F. aztecus postlarvae cultured in artificial seawater under closed recirculating and flow-through conditions. The closed recirculating larval rearing system successfully produced five-day-old postlarvae (PL) from Zoea I (Z1) with similar dry weights, lengths and stress resistance to PL produced under standard water exchange practices. The trickling biofilters were found to be a limiting component of this system. A submerged coral biofilter was added to the system and effectively processed culture water for re-use. Addition of the submerged biofilter resulted in improved survival rates in Trials 4, 5 and 6. These studies demonstrate maturation and larval rearing of F. aztecus is feasible in closed recirculating systems. Implementation of these systems in hatcheries bolsters biosecurity while reducing the environmental impact of hatchery effluent. Recirculating and re-use systems are therefore essential in the further development of sustainable hatchery programs for endemic species.

Utilization and evaluation of an indoxacarb-based granular bait (Advion) developed for the control of the red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta Buren (Hymenoptera: Formicidae)Furman, Barry D. 17 September 2007 (has links)
This research evaluated the new red imported fire ant (RIFA) bait Advionâ¢.
Advion⢠contains the active ingredient indoxacarb which, following ingestion, must be
metabolized into an N-decarbomethoxyllated metabolite known as JT333 in order to
become acutely toxic. Laboratory experimentation was conducted to determine the most
effective chemical form and concentration of indoxacarb, as well as the most appropriate
grit size, for use in Advionâ¢. The results indicated that Advion⢠containing indoxacarb
was more effective than Advion⢠containing JT333, that 0.10%, 0.06%, and 0.045%
were the most effective concentrations of indoxacarb, and that standard sized grit (~2
mm) was more effective than small sized grit (<1 mm).
Field experimentation was conducted to determine the most effective concentration
and quantity of Advionâ¢, as well as the most effective placement of the bait, for
obtaining maximum control of RIFA colonies via individual mound treatments. The
results indicated that 10 g (2 Tbsp) of 0.045% Advion⢠placed around the mound in a
circle with a radius of 0.5-3.0 m was the most effective manner in which to treat
individual RIFA mounds. Field experimentation was also conducted to compare the
effectiveness of label-rate broadcast treatment with Advion⢠to the effectiveness of both label-rate broadcast treatment with Amdroî and pre-baiting broadcast treatment with
Advionâ¢. Both pre-baiting broadcast treatment and label-rate broadcast treatment with
Advion⢠ultimately resulted in 98-99% RIFA colony mortality, which was significantly
greater than the 87% colony mortality resulting from broadcast treatment with Amdroî.
The 6.2 d LT90 for label-rate broadcast treatment with Advion⢠was nearly one half that
of the LT90 for pre-baiting broadcast treatment.
Laboratory experimentation was conducted to determine whether RIFA workers were
capable of metabolizing indoxacarb into the toxic metabolite, and the results clearly
indicated that they were. Finally, field experimentation was conducted to evaluate the
effectiveness of label-rate broadcast treatment with Advion⢠at controlling multiple ant
species. The results indicated that label-rate broadcast treatment with Advion⢠resulted
in control of the RIFA and Pogonomyrmex barbatus for at least 7 wk, and Monomorium
pharaonis and Dorymyrmex pyramicus for some period of time between 3 and 7 wk.

The subterranean termite Coptotermes gestroi (Wasmann, 1896) is a pest of major economic importance in the urban environments of southeastern Brazil. In this study, we performed laboratory and field experiments to evaluate the efficacy of sulfluramid, hydramethylnon, boric acid, fipronil, pyriproxyfen and cyromazine as active ingredients in bait. In the first experiment, we tested different concentrations of these active ingredients in Petri dishes, searching for the best slow-acting and non-repellent concentrations for this termite. Concentrations selected from the initial experiment were used in a second laboratory experiment using a large number of individuals. From the results of this second experiment we selected the following concentrations to be fieldtested: 0.01 ppm of sulfluramid; 200 ppm of hydramethylnon; between 12,500 and 15,000 ppm of cyromazine; between 1,000 and 12,500 ppm of pyriproxyfen; between 3,000 and 2,000 ppm of boric acid. The data displayed a fast mortality of termites exposed to fipronil, even in small concentrations, therefore demonstrating that it is not a suitable chemical to be used in baits against C. gestroi. For field experiments, we estimated population and territory size from three colonies of C. gestroi present at the experimental site. Field results showed no repellence for site I (P.S.), II (L.U.) and III (S.O.R.) using sulfluramid 0.1 ppm, hydramethylnon 400 ppm, and cyromazine 15,000 ppm. However, the number of baited used at the selected concentrations were not sufficient to totally eliminate the colonies. This result suggests that, in natural colonies of subterranean termites, different food resources and competition, in this case with the native species Heterotermes tenuis, could influence the success of the control programs.

If attractive, what is the behavior exhibited by the workers? Do they ingest the baits in the spot or take them into the nest? Is there any devolution? Under conditions of multiple food choice, does this attractiveness remain or does it happen only in the lack of the conventional food? What is the outcome of direct or indirect contact between the ants and the baits? Is there significant mortality? Which of the active ingredients is the most harmful? Are the products selective? The results obtained from the tests in laboratory showed that, under conditions of normal exposure, the workers of E. brunneum were not repelled by the insecticide baits. Nevertheless, there was not enough attractiveness as to lead to transporting or ingesting. When the material was moistened, the attractiveness increased significantly, allowing portions of bait to be ingested at the very foraging arena or to be taken into the nest and distributed to the other individuals. Total or partial devolution of the portions carried was not observed in any of the treatments. After a 48 hour exposure the three active ingredients proved to be toxic, for the population was reduced in 35.56% in the treatment with chlorpyrifos, 31.11% with sulfluramid and 30% with fipronil at the end of 20 days of observation. The fipronil based baits were more attractive than the ones based on sulfluramid and chlorpyrifos...(Complete abstract click electronic access below)

Biological Soil Invertebrate Activity in a Tropical Rainforest : A comparison of soil invertebrate activity in two tropical rain forests in BorneoBerglund, Hanna January 2020 (has links)
Logging of tropical forests is increasing worldwide. Logging alters the forest conditions such as temperature, soil water content and litter input into the soil. This study explored how soil invertebrate activity in Borneo differs between pristine forests and two secondary forests, with 10 and 40 years of recovery time since the last logging. To measure the soil fauna feeding activity, the bait lamina stick method was applied. The study was conducted in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo, during April and May 2019. 33 forest plots were examined with ten lamina sticks placed in each of the three replicas per forest plot. The sticks were kept in the soil for four weeks before being removed. Upon removal, the soil invertebrate activity was determined by assessing how many holes of the bait lamina sticks were eaten and at what depth. The activity was related to the above-ground carbon density (ACD, a density measure for amount of above-ground carbon), as well as depth-specific activity in the different plots. Moreover, further relationships with the invertebrate activity and environmental conditions such as cumulative throughfall during the study time as well as the soil water content were studied. The results showed that the soil activity slightly decreased with increased ACD, but no statistical significance was found. This study also suggests that the activity was higher in the upper 0-5cm of the soil than in the lower 5-10 cm. Lastly, the results showed that the activity was highest in the forest with the shortest recovery time (10 years). This implies that it might be possible to regain the original soil activity since the activity of the 40-year-old forest was closer to the pristine forest than that of the 10- year-old forest.
