Bergström, Johan, Linnér, Marcus January 2018 (has links)
Background: Infrastructure and how we choose to build our cities control the population's patterns of activity. Infrastructure and technology have evolved into society and provided alternative approaches to get up and down between different floors. More people choose the escalators and the elevator before the stairs and miss out on the positive effects that are connected to everyday stairwells. Purpose: The purpose of the study was to investigate whether it could affect people's behavior to take the stairs instead of the escalator, by changing the environment with a stairway painting. Method: The study was a prospective, quasi-experimental, descriptive intervention study with a consecutive selection. The people who passed the stairs / escalators for a predetermined period of time were studied. The measurements were made using a traffic measurement system (OTUS3D) and lasted for three weeks. First, a baseline was measured during week one, painting the staircase during week two, and measurement for the intervention week three. Summary of results: This study showed no improvement in behavioral change in pedestrians. The statistically significant decrease of pedestrians in the stairs can be explained by the large number of participants in the study. Conclusion: There are many unresolved questions about what affects people's behavior in their daily lives. The number of factors is greater than this study has tested. Other interventions in the form of another motive or architectural design may produce other results.

Development of an Energy-Information Feedback System for a Smartphone Application

Elliott, Joseph January 2012 (has links)
Energy conservation and efficiency are often widely touted as non-controversial, cost-positive methods of reducing energy consumption and its associated environmental effects.  However, past programs to encourage residential energy efficiency and conservation have failed to make an impact.  A growing amount of research identifies energy feedback as a method to provide consumers with the information and motivation necessary to make appropriate energy-saving decisions.  JouleBug is a social, playful, mobile smartphone application designed to help users in the U.S. reduce energy consumption and live sustainably through behavioral changes.   This project initiated the design of an energy feedback system for JouleBug that provides estimates of a user’s energy savings for completing 38 residential energy saving actions.  Mathematical models were developed to estimate JouleBug users’ energy savings for each of the energy saving actions, based on 13 input parameters. A method was developed to aggregate each of the savings actions across various energy end-uses into a summary of the user’s energy savings over a given time period.  Additionally, the energy models were utilized to analyze an average user’s potential energy, cost, and greenhouse gas savings over a year. Research into the design components of effective feedback systems was applied in the context of JouleBug to compliment the engineering work.  The components of frequency, measurement unit, data granularity, recommended actions, and comparisons were examined.  Design suggestions based on these components that utilized the energy models to provide effective energy feedback to JouleBug’s users were proposed.  Finally, this report describes opportunities for future research using simple energy modeling methods to provide effective consumer energy feedback in a mobile smartphone application.

Decision-making in the inductive mode : The role of human behavior

Nobel, Johan January 2013 (has links)
Economists have convulsively maintained the assumption that humans are able to arrive at decisions by perfect deductive rationality, despite the fact empirical evidences are showing otherwise. The contradicting evidences have resulted in a personal view that instead of finding a unified theory about decision-making, a sound approach would be to study how humans in fact are reasoning in specific contexts. The context of interest for this paper is where it could be assumed humans’ persistence of acting rational is determined by the perceived burden of the problem. In this work, the inductive way of arriving at decisions plays an important role, and the paper will present a way of describing this process in a consistent way. The process will be denoted as the actual level of behavioral change, and represent the core property of this paper. Applying the presented theory is most appropriate for situations where it could be assumed the burden of a problem, expressed as a prevalence rate, will drive the behavioral change. The line of reasoning in this paper will therefore be applied to the important arena of fighting the spread of HIV.

Understanding and responding to algorithm : How different age groups reflect and respond to problematic aspects of YouTube’s algorithm

Khorsun, Nelli January 2020 (has links)
YouTube is a global video sharing platform, affecting millions of users daily with its algorithm. With the lack of research on users’ perspectives this study explored: How different age groups reflect and respond to problematic aspects of the YouTube algorithm. Two different age groups were interviewed to probe their perspectives and test any following shifts in attitudes or behavior. Using the lens of the Transtheoretical behavior change model (“Stages of Change”), these two groups were taxonomised and revealed differing affective perceptions and dynamics towards intentions to change. The younger generations proved to be more rigid, while the older indicated more flexibility to change. These and other perception dimensions such as: self-assessment, level of trust, responsibility issues and engagement practices were explored and compared between two age groups.

A study that examines how user experience the implementation of a MDD process with the purpose of achieving a circular behavior

Pavlovic, Teodora January 2023 (has links)

The plastic bag ban in Kenya : A study on consumer perceptions and attitudes following the plastic bag ban in Nairobi, Kenya

Luzze, Sauda January 2023 (has links)
In 2017, Kenya's government banned plastic bags, to reduce plastic waste and protect the environment. Today Kenya has one of the strictest plastic bag bans in the world.  This study examines the perception of the plastic bag ban by different income classes in Nairobi, as well as what factors influence people's support for the plastic bag ban in Nairobi.  The result indicates that the majority of respondents expressed strong support for the plastic bag ban, citing environmental concerns and the need for sustainable practices. However, a small segment of the population remained skeptical about the effectiveness and feasibility of the ban. The opinions of respondents that the ban was not strict enough is an indicator that the government still needs to do more and work towards a better environment. Factors such as age and education level emerged as influential factors in shaping individuals' perceptions. However, the relationship was not enough to influence opinion on supporting the ban.  Consumer behaviors and awareness about environmental factors were mainly significant in influencing the opinions of residents in supporting the ban. This suggests that people that have reduced their plastic bag usage and are environmentally conscious, are more likely to support the plastic bag ban.  In conclusion, the findings from this study contribute to the public’s opinion on this strict plastic bag ban, in Kenya. The results emphasize the importance of promoting awareness and education to ensure the successful implementation and acceptance of the plastic bag ban. These findings can inform policymakers, environmental organizations, and other stakeholders in designing effective strategies to address plastic waste and promote sustainable practices.

Persuasive Design in Digital Pediatric Asthma Self- Management : Physician Perspectives / Övertygande design i ett pediatrisk självhanteringssystem för astma : Läkarperspektiv

Soltan, Aleksandra January 2021 (has links)
This work explores the acceptability of various persuasive design principles for pediatric users of a digital, asthma self-management solution. While persuasive design methods have been shown to motivate adherence to digital self-management, effective persuasion is highly context-dependent. The gap in research on persuasive design for younger users of asthma self-management applications raises the question of which persuasive principles are acceptable for this group’s unique context. This question is explored through the Persuasive Systems Design model. Based on interviews and workshop feedback from physicians, six persuasive principles were chosen for a redesign of an existing asthma self-management solution. The prototype was evaluated for potential acceptability by user proxies. The Personalization and Simulation persuasive principles were perceived as most acceptable for pediatric, digital asthma self-management.
