Este trabalho gerou um desenvolvimento técnico da equipe envolvida e preciosa economia de recurso não renovável / Abstract: This work aims to show the efficiency of Six Sigma Methodology application in reducing waste of a manufacturing process. The making process of disposable respirator was chosen to this case study because it generated an enormous amount of fiber scrap used as raw material. Improving methodologies applied every since had reduced significantly the waste level but a different approach was needed to reduce it even more. Following the Six Sigma Methodology, a team was formed to focus the whole attention on reducing this waste and breaking the paradigm which inherent waste of a process cannot be eliminated. Through an addition of a new process step in order to reprocess the waste ¿ pressed fiber discharged by the end of this process - all of it was recovered, keeping the same characteristics of raw fiber. Therefore, the waste was 100% eliminated. Sigma level, which was historically lower than 3, became higher than 6 by the end of the work. The statistics tools applied demonstrated the optimized set point of the raw and recovered fiber mixture in order to maintain the final product properties under the point of view of end-users. This work resulted in team technical development and precious non-renewed raw material savings / Mestrado / Planejamento e Gestão Estrategica da Manufatura / Mestre em Engenharia Mecânica

Integrated multibody dynamics and fatigue models for predicting the fatigue life of poly-V ribbed beltsElmaraghi, Omar A. 05 1900 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Belt-drives are used in many applications such as industrial machines, washing machines, and accessory drives for automobiles and other vehicles. Multibody dynamics/finite element numerical models have become an effective way to predict the dynamic response of belt-drives. In this thesis, a high fidelity numerical model was built using a multibody dynamics/finite element code to simulate a belt-drive. The belt-drive transmits power from a turbine of a Rankin cycle (that uses the exhaust waste heat of the internal combustion engine as heat source) to the crank shaft of the engine. The code uses a time-accurate explicit numerical integration technique to solve the multibody dynamics differential equations. The belt was modeled using three-node beam elements to account for the belt axial and bending stiffness/damping, while the pulleys, shafts and tensioner body were modeled as rigid bodies. The penalty technique was used to model normal contact between the belt and the pulleys. An asperity-based friction model was used to approximate Coulomb friction between the belt and the pulleys. The dynamic response predicted using the model was validated by comparing it to experimental results supplied by Cummins Inc. A parameter sensitivity study was performed to evaluate the change in response due to change in various belt-drive parameters. A fatigue model was developed to predict the belt fatigue life using output from the explicit finite element code including normal and tangential forces between the belt and the pulleys and belt tension. The belt fatigue life was evaluated for alternative belt-drive configurations in order to find the configuration with the longest life.

The Effects of Chinese FDI and Infrastructure on Economic Growth across the Belt and RoadStockmann, Ann-Sophia January 2019 (has links)
China has gone through a phase of rapid economic development in the last four decades. The country is the world’s biggest economy, measured in GDP purchasing power parity terms, and the largest trading nation in terms of the total sum of exports and imports of merchandise trade. With the launch of the century’s largest infrastructure project – the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) – by Xi Jinping in 2013, China is planning to revive the Ancient Silk Roads in order to gain geopolitical power beyond Asia. Thus far, huge flows of FDI have already made their way from China to countries along the Belt and Road, especially the ones in need of additional infrastructure provision. In this paper, the effect of Chinese outward FDI on economic growth in the BRI economies through infrastructure development is examined, thereby conducting a cross-country analysis with panel data for 34 and 27 countries, respectively, over the period 2005–2017. The direct effect of Chinese FDI on economic growth in BRI countries is ambiguous, supporting previous literature on FDI and economic growth. When adding infrastructure indicators to the regressions and accounting for the endogeneity problem, the effect of Chinese FDI on economic growth changes but remains insignificant, nevertheless. This is most likely due to the reduced sample sizes, on the one hand, and the fact that Chinese construction contracts play a bigger role than actual FDI in the BRI.

This Doctoral thesis focus on the end of the Precambrian, the Neoproterozoic, a pivotal period in the Earth history, by the study of ophiolitic units dated between 800 and 700 Ma. This work essentially deals with the petrography, geochemistry and magnetism of serpentinites from these ophiolites. They are associated with Panafrican orogenic belts along the West African and the Amazonian cratons and witnesses the subductions and the oceanic lithosphere associated to the break-up of the supercontinent Rodinia. The study of these neoproterozoic ophiolites allowed us to propose the formation settings for these sections of oceanic lithosphere. Another question behind this work is: Does the study of serpentinization and associated hydrothermalism allows one to provide constraints on the oceanic paleoenvironment? Work on the serpentinites and associated mafic rocks from the Araguaia belt ophiolitic units (757 ± 49 Ma1, Brazil) constitute the first geochemical study realized on these units. The Cr-spinel chemistry coupled with geochemical modeling, concerning essentially the REE concentrations, attest to a highly refractory protolith that endured between 14 and 24% of partial melting. This work also indicate an abyssal affinity (i.e. MOR rather than SSZ) of these serpentinites, which is confirmed by the N-MORB and E-MORB geochemical signature of the associated basalts. It appears that the serpentinization of these units probably took place in two steps, first in oceanic domain and then by interaction with fluids derived from the surrounding sediments after obduction, leading to strong LILE, B and Li enrichments in the serpentinites. Finally, we propose two potential settings concerning the origin of the sections of oceanic lithosphere presently found in the Araguaia belt: (1) an ocean-continent transition or (2) slices of a more mature lithosphere trapped into an accretionary wedge. Fieldwork, petrography and geochemical analysis on serpentinites from the Khzama (762± 2 Ma²) and Aït Ahmane ophiolitic sections (Anti-Atlas, Morocco) firstly allowed to confirm the supposed link between these two ophiolites. Cr-spinels in serpentinites from these units are characterized by very high Cr# and low Mg# testifying of a protolith having endured partial melting greater the 25%, confirming their affinity with the anti-atlasic subduction zone. This is corroborated by very low incompatible element concentrations such as Al, Ti, HREE and HFSE. Thus, the most likely setting for the genesis of these sections of lithosphere is a same intra-oceanic back-arc spreading center at the margin of the Rodinia supercontinent. The comparative study of all studied serpentinites from Neoproterozoic ophiolites in different settings also demonstrates the ability of magnetic measurements in monitoring the Cr-spinel alteration degree, a method which can be extended to other types of rocks. In particular, we show that Cr-magnetite and ferritchromite can be identified using thermomagnetic curves. Finally, the association of magnetic, petrographic and geochemical methods allows us to propose a model concerning the formation of the massive magnetite veins of the North Aït Ahmane unit. We show that the triptych consisting in: altered serpentinites, spinels and centimetric magnetite veins, results from a fossil, black smoker type, abyssal hydrothermal system. In this context, the oxygen isotopic compositions of the magnetite veins provide a 18O value of the deep Neoproterozoic oceans of -1.33 ± 0.98 (VSMOW), a value that is very similar to the current one (between -1 and +1 VSMOW). It also settles the debate on the evolution of the 18O of the oceans during geological time, attesting of its consistency, at least since the Neoproterozoic.

Design and Analysis of a Tensioner for a Belt-driven Integrated Starter-generator System of Micro-hybrid VehiclesOlatunde, Adebukola Olsanmi 26 February 2009 (has links)
The thesis presents the design and analysis of a Twin Tensioner for a Belt-driven Integrated Starter-generator (B-ISG) system. The B-ISG is an emerging hybrid transmission closely resembling conventional serpentine belt drives. Models of the B-ISG system's geometric properties and dynamic and static states are derived and simulated. The objective is to reduce the magnitudes of static tension in the belt for the ISG-driving phase. A literature review of hybrid systems, serpentine belt drive modeling and automotive tensioners is included. A parametric study evaluates tensioner parameters with respect to their impact on static tensions. Design variables are selected from these for an optimization study. The optimization uses a genetic algorithm (GA) and a hybrid GA. Results of the optimization indicate the optimal system contains spans with static tensions that are significantly lower in magnitude than that of the original design. Implications of the research on future work are discussed in closing.

Structural control plays a major role in gold deposits. Thus, understanding the different structures present in the area, as well as the relationship between these structures, is a key issue. This work aims to identify the structural control of the gold deposit of C1-Santaluz. It also presents the tectono-stratigraphic stacking of the rocks and the main deformation phases that occur in the area. The C1-Santaluz deposit is located in a Greenstone Belt and has a complex structural setting. Therefore, there is a need to better understand the structures that can influence the geometry of the mineralized bodies. The rocks of the study area were mapped in 1:750 scale. The study was carried out through macroscopic and microscopic description of rocks, as well as scanning electron microscope and of x-ray diffraction analyses. The rock units that occur in the area were divided in two main domains, base to top, Sequência Vulcânica and Sequência Metassedimentar. The mineral paragenesis related to the auriferous mineralization is represented by sulphides, pyrite, arsenopyrite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite and stibnite. Arsenopyrite showed direct relation with the presence of gold, detected by scanning electron microscope analysis. A total of 3 deformational phases were identified: Dn-1, Dn, Dn+1. Phase Dn-1 and Dn have direct relation with the mineralization since mineralized quartz veins occur parallel to the Sn foliation (S0//Sn-1//Sn). The intersection between the bedding S0//Sn-1 and Sn foliation generates an intersection lineation that is parallel to the Dn fold axis, plunging to NW. These structures are favorable for the increase of the volume of the mineralized bodies, plunging to NW. The rocks were metamorphosed under lower greenschist facies conditions (biotite zone).

Anomalie thermique et sous-placage en zone d'avant-arc : exemple du massif Triasique de El Oro, Equateur / Thermal anomaly in forearc position : the Triassic andean margin of EcuadorRiel, Nicolas 20 January 2012 (has links)
Since about 540 Ma, two subductions systems co-exist on Earth: the subduction-collision systems (Hercynian, Himalayan or Alpin belts) and the circum-pacific subduction system. For the last the forearc region constitutes a key zone to understand the dynamic of the subduction. Indeed the forearc region in contact with the slab may records various tectonics events and/or metamorphic conditions (e.g. formation of paired metamorphic belt). Theses geological records are direct evidences of the linked geodynamical context. The El Oro metamorphic complex in Ecuador is a unique example where a whole Triassic forearc section is tilted and well preserved. The complex is made of low to high grade metasedimentary rocks intruded by S-type granitoids, juxtaposed with gabbroic rocks and blueschists. This study is focused on the high-temperature metamorphism and its retionaships with the high-pressure metamorphism. In order to constrain the tectono-metamorphic affecting the forearc region and the formation of a paired metamorphic belt we used strutural, metamorphic, geochemical, geochronological and themal modeling studies. Our results show that during Triassic times the Ecuadorian forearc underwent a strong episode of partial melting in extentional context. The migmatized part of crust is 10 km thick. Pressure-Temperature estimates indicate that partial melting started at 4.5 kbar and 650°C for the upper metatexitic part until 7.5 kbar and 720 °C for the lower diatexitic part. The resulting geothermal gradient exhibits two parts: an upper part caracteristed by a thermal gradient of 40°C/km and a lower part caractérized by a near-adiabatic gradient. The absence of ultra-high tempetature paragenesis is attributed to the high fertility of the metasedimentary protolith. Geochemical results show that granodiorite made of a miwing between: (1) the melt extacted under muscovite dehydration melting and (2) a basic magma. U-Pb ages on zircon and monazite reveal that the anatectic event was short, between 229 and 225 Ma. The origin of the thermal anomaly is attributed to the emplacement of the gabbroic plutonic unit at ~230 at root level. Successively, the blueschites are underplating triggering a strong coolng of the forearc region. The anatectic recorded in the El Oro metamorphic complex at Triassic times is part of a larger thermal anomaly affecting the whole south american margin between 260 and 220 Ma. During this period the margin is under extentional conditions and exhibit a strong S-type magmatic activity. This magmatism is mainly located in arc and forearc position. We attribute this large-scale thermal anomaly to slab fall in the lower mantle. In the light of the geodynamical context, we suggest that the formation of the El Oro paired metamorphic belt is related to slab breakoff.
