”Jag är en vampyr” Om unga kvinnors identitetsskapande i det senmoderna samhället / ”I am a vampire” About young women’s identity in the Late Modern AgeRokka, Violetta January 2011 (has links)
The purpose of this Master’s thesis is to investigate if there might be a possiblecorrelation between young women´s fascination with the vampire narrative andtheir search for identity in the late modern age. With the help of contemporarysociological studies in the field of the late modern man and today’s youth culture,I’ve chosen to do qualitative interviews with eight young women in order to examinehow today’s society affects their process of identification. Lately we’ve been ableto see an enormous interest for books that deal with the vampire saga, and while thereaders are mostly young females, it brought me to ask the question why the combinationof teenage drama and vampires seems to be such a winning concept. We live in a time where most young females experience a lot of pressure trying to addup to the demands of society, and as the media keep producing images of youngwomen being thin and looking like supermodels, most teenagers feel a lot of pressureand anxiety trying to live up to such unnatural ideals that in the long run might lead tovarious health issues and eating disorders. As a result of this thesis I’ve found that the vampire narrative answers to some ofthe existential needs we have as members of a late modern society. I’ve also discoveredthat most young women tend to seek comfort in subcultures that deal directlywith vampiric imagery as refuge from the demands of society. However, the identifycationwith vampires and their heroines isn’t something one should encourage since itcan be seen as a form of escapism making most women alienate themselves fromsociety while constructing an identity that is mostly based on otherness. Though thesubculture community does offer some relief from the restraints of society, as mystudies have shown, and aid most young women in their identity making, it is stillimportant to underline the fact that they cannot fully escape from the demands ofsociety since they are, as it is, a member of it. / Program: Bibliotekarie

Informal register in prose fiction and problems of translation into Lithuanian: an analysis of feminist bestsellers Sex and the City and Lipstick Jungle by Candice Bushnell / Kalbos paribių vertimo problemos grožinėje literatūroje: Candice Bushnell feministinių bestselerių „Seksas ir miestas“ ir „Lūpdažių džiunglės“ analizėKranauskaitė, Agnė 05 August 2008 (has links)
The aim of the thesis is to analyze informal register in prose fiction. The analysis focuses on the representation of text messaging, foreigners’ oral discourse, swear words and references to sexual activities, as well as parts of the body in both the original and translation of feminist bestsellers Sex and the City (1997) and Lipstick Jungle (2005) by Candice Bushnell. The analysis is based on the theory of feminist bestseller and the use of spoken discourse in written language.
The paper is divided into six parts and also includes eight appendices. Part One introduces the aim of the paper and gives a short summary of the feminist bestsellers Sex and the City (1997) and Lipstick Jungle (2005) by Candice Bushnell. Part Two presents a short history of feminist bestseller and outlines the theoretical background for the analysis. Part Three focuses on the informal register in prose fiction, namely in the feminist bestsellers. Further, Part Four discusses the differences between spoken and written language, as well as ways to imitate spoken language in the literary translation. An analysis of the cases found in the two feminist bestsellers is presented in Part Five where Chapter 5.1 presents the problems concerning texting and is further divided into Section 5.1.1 which is devoted to the theoretical approach to translating text messages and Section 5.1.2 which analyses the examples of text messages. Chapter 5.2 introduces different perspectives on language interference and... [to full text] / Šio darbo tikslas – ištirti kalbos paribius grožinėje literatūroje.
CSR in PracticeMEIDLER, CLAUDIO January 2015 (has links)
Purpose – The purpose of this work is to examine the actual CSR situation in low wage countries of the textile industry and to identify obstacles and suggestions for improvements of the working conditions. In order to achieve that approach, different sources and various articles, magazines, books and related websites are being researched to get a wide range of information and to avoid a partial reflection. Furthermore an exemplary discussion of the CSR activities of two leading fashion retailers, Bestseller and H&M will be implemented by having a look on their company homepages as well as their current and previous annual reports and stated CSR activities. In addition, interviews with international operating NGO’s, fair trade unions and human right foundations will be conducted to receive widely independent information, deeper insights and critics concerning CSR and Human Development in the textile business. These interviews are of crucial importance for this work, since they provide widely independent assessments of the actual state of CSR implementation within the industry. By considering all the different information, this work provides ultimately indications for grievances and proposals for improvements in Human Development. Methodology – Using a qualitative research strategy, this work begins with a definition of CSR and Human Development, which provides a necessary background knowledge to approach CSR in the textile business. In order to get an idea of some of the industry wide activities and obstacles, this work contains an exemplary description of the CSR work of the two leading fashion retailers, Bestseller and H&M, using their company home pages as well as their current and previous annual reports and an outline of their reflection of the current stage of affairs regarding Human Development. Based on the findings from the homepages of H&M and Bestseller and the companies’ claim, different researched articles and the latest accidents in the news, eleven different interview questions were developed, regarding the actual textile production situation in the RGM industry. These questions are being used for semi-structured in-depth interviews with three different experts of the International Labour Organization, the German NGO Südwind Institute and the Confederation of the German Textile and Fashion Industry to get first hand information about the already achieved progress of the working conditions, as well as crucial driving forces and challenges within the Human Development “sector” of CSR in low wage countries. By considering all the different information, this work finally reveals grievances in CSR and gives proposals for improving the working conditions of the textile factory workers in emerging countries. Findings – The findings show the complexity and necessity of a controversy about CSR approaches in the textile and garment sector of developing countries. Recent accidents and different investigations by independent organizations are supporting the impression of an existing gap between the CSR policies of fashion companies on the one hand and the reality in the firms on the other hand. Different NGO’s are complaining about insufficiently implemented approaches and Codes of fashion brands and retailers within the supply chain. This work provides different suggestions for improving the working conditions of the textile factory workers in emerging countries. Possible ways for a human friendlier textile production are for example the strengthening of trade unions and worker advocacies, the ensuring of a social dialogue and closer collaborations between all the different stakeholders within the industry - including the governments, as well as more legal bindings and stricter regulations. Research limitations/ implications – The findings from this study are limited to the “sector” of Human Development and most of the results or hypotheses are not conclusively audited, due to the difficult validation. Additionally, the study is mainly focusing on the worker situation in selected low wage countries and does not provide global conclusions. Further research should aim to gain even further insights, for instance on a local company or local supplier level.

Previous issue date: 2012-11-09 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / With regards to the contemporary literature, it is clear the occurrence of a continuous dialog between mass culture and the processes of industrialization derived from the last half of the XX century. Because of the relationship between literature and commercial activities that regard the culture industry, mass literature has its value questioned. Questions related to selling, narrating and language are the most debated hot topics when it comes to this type of literature, which ends up being regarded as a "subliterature" or a literature which is less worth-reading. Therefore, having the relationship between art and the cultural industry in mind, the present study aims at realizing an approach that encompasses all social, historical and cultural aspects related to the literary production aimed to the mass, through a subject-reader approach. Also, we will differ the nomenclatures attributed to these literature books- best seller, mega seller, mega best seller, and mass literature- as well as identify the possibilities of approaching and legitimizing the aforementioned categories. Thus, our aim here is to reflect and to question the assumptions about what literature is and the influence of the cultural industry in the arts, through a theoretical background that interacts with the theories of literature, and the social, cultural and historical studies. This way, this study will offer a theoretical opening in terms of contemporary literature and its influences in the mass culture, leading to other research about this topic in the future.
perfazendo, principalmente, o caminho do sujeito-leitor.

Do Women Shine at Work? : Gender Roles in Japan’s Bestseller Films 1998-2018Helander, Sandra January 2019 (has links)
This thesis examines the gender roles in the workplace featured in the selected Japanese bestseller films produced in the last three decades, which saw the introduction of policies aimed at improving gender equality in the workplace. The study argues that despite societal and political changes in Japan in the last thirty years bestseller films have perpetuated traditional portrayal of gender roles. The explanation could be that it is much easier to change rules and legislations, than the perception on gender roles, which have existed in the society for a long time.
