Images of Eight Branches of Journalism Perceived by Journalism Students at North Texas State University

Choo, Kwang Yung 08 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to specify quantitatively the meanings and images of eight branches of journalism as perceived by a selected group of college students majoring in journalism. The problem of this study was to identify the locations of these meanings, using a semantic differential, as points in a three-dimensional semantic space consisting of evaluation, potency, and activity dimensions. The study was also designed to test two hypotheses. Hypothesis One was that there would be a significant difference between the male and female groups in their perception of the same concept about a journalism branch. Hypothesis Two was that there would be a significant difference between two concepts perceived by the members of the same sex group.

Astwerk jako pozdně gotický přírodní dekor v Českých zemích v mezinárodních souvislostech. / The Astwerk like late gothic natural decor in Bohemian lands with interatinal kontext.

Škrancová, Markéta January 2016 (has links)
The Astwerk like late gothic natural decor in Bohemian lands with international kontext Abstract The diploma thesis presents introduction to problems of naturalistic dekor and use of the motif cut branches / astwerk in Bohemian lands. The focus will be primarily using in the field of sculpture of stone. There will be explained starting area use of astwerk decor, way to the Bohemian lands and Moravia, followed by the development of a retreat in the context of the Renaissance. After a critical review of the literature the work will indicate a chapter on cultural-historical context. The situation in the Bohemian lands after the Hussite wars will be introduced, when in insecure religious circumstances was chosen King Vladislav Jagiello in Kutna Hora, and so begins a new period of prosperity of the country again. Mentioned also will be his representative program in response to Charles IV. Soon Vladislav Jagiello also became King of Hungary and change the new seat to Buda. The influence of the character of the change should be noted. Above it is meant unbroken artistic production and later inspiration the early Renaissance form. The subchapter is a courtly art especially during the reign of Vladislav Jagiello. In this part there are presented foremost works and their authors also including B. Ried. In this...

Lejeune, Geneviève 11 April 2018 (has links)
Stem taper (variation of stem profile) and branchiness (variation of branch basal diameter) equations are useful in evaluating the value of lumber recovery through sawing optimization. In this study, taper and branchiness equations were calibrated for black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) BSP) using data derived from past biomass and crown morphology studies. Equation parameters were estimated by a linear mixed effect method employing a first-order continuous autoregressive error process. The resultant stem taper equation captured variation across a wide range of stand and environmental conditions. Similarly, using tree diameter at breast height (Dbh) and crown length as explanatory variables, the resultant branchiness equations enabled the prediction of the (1) largest branch diameter per tree, and (2) mean branch diameter per tree. Tree height measurements are not always available in common forest inventory data, but are essential to taper and branchiness prediction. Consequently, an additional equation to predict tree height was also developed, based on Dbh and site index.

Bank branches and Entrepreneurship : A spatial analysis of new firm formation in Swedish regions and industries in a changing financial landscape

Ho, Cynthia Sin Tian January 2019 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to analyse how bank branch closure has affected the formation of new firms and to explore the varying local relationships between the accessibility of bank branches and new firm formation in 290 Swedish municipalities. In the first paper, the effect of bank branch closure is examined through spatial econometric analysis, in particular, the fixed effects and the random effects spatial panel models. The findings of the first paper show that an increase in the weighted distance to the nearest bank branches due to bank branch closure negatively affects new firm formation, based on the random effects spatial panel model. The analysis also shows that spatial effects should be included in the analysis due to spill-over effects from neighbouring municipalities. In the second paper, the varying relationships between new firm formation and its determinants in 290 Swedish municipalities are examined through Geographically weighted regression (GWR). Mostly positive relationships with new firm formation are shown for firm density, human capital level, industry diversification level and percentage of immigrants living in the area. In contrast, mostly negative relationships are shown for weighted mean distance to the nearest bank branches, establishment size, unemployment rate, industry specialization. Spatially constrained multivariate clustering is also applied to group municipalities with similar conditions. Patterns in the industry composition and the location attributes are analysed for each cluster. / <p>QC 20190923</p>

Transition fronts and propagation speeds in diffusive excitable media / Fronts de transition et vitesses de propagation dans des milieux diffusifs excitables

Guo, Hongjun 11 June 2018 (has links)
This dissertation is concerned with transition fronts in various media, which generalize the standard notions of traveling fronts. The main results are as following. For bistable reaction, we prove the time monotonicity of all transition fronts with non-zero global mean speed, whatever shape their level sets may have. For time-periodic bistable reaction and combustion-type reaction, we prove the existence and the uniqueness of the global mean speed. Meantime, we show that almost-planar fronts are actually planar and we show the existence of non-standard transitions fronts in $\mathbb{R}^N$. For spatially periodic bistable reaction, we show some continuity and differentiability properties of the front speeds and profiles with respect to the direction $e$ by providing the existence of pulsating fronts with nonzero speed in all directions $e$. Then, we prove that the propagating speed of any transition front is bounded by the minimal speed and the maximal speed of pulsating fronts. Finally, we study the mean speed of bistable transition fronts in unbounded domains: exterior domains and domains with multiple cylindrical branches. In both domains, we prove the existence and uniqueness of the global mean speed of any transition front under some assumptions.

Medidas provisórias: os efeitos não antecipados da EC 32 nas relações entre Executivo e Legislativo / Provisional measures: the unanticipated effects of EC 32 in the relations between the Executive and Legislative

Oliveira, Fernanda Machiaveli Morão de 16 December 2009 (has links)
This dissertation focuses on the Constitutional Amendment n.32 of 2001, which regulates the use of provisional measures (the Brazilian president´s executive decrees) and sets material limits on its content and more rigorous proceedings. Among its main rules were the prohibition of decree re-issuances and the establishment of a 45-day period for provisional measures to be appreciated by the Congress, under penalty of limiting the legislative agenda. First, the dissertation examines the reasons that led lawmakers to adopt the new rules. The argument is that such adoption was not the congressmen´s reaction against the president´s usurpation of the legislative function, as had been then justified. The advance in the constitutional amendment of the provisional measures results mainly from an internal division in the government coalition, which paved the way for the strategic behavior of the opposition. Moreover, changes in the opinion of the Justices of Brazilian Supreme Court and the Brazilian Bar Association´s campaign for the limitation of the instrument increased the costs of delaying the assessment of the proposal. Events taking place in other arenas have changed the payoffs of the players in the parliamentary arena, creating incentives for cooperation between government and the opposition. Finally, the upcoming presidential elections and the uncertainty about each party´s roles in the next government provided an environment conducive to agreement. Next, we investigated the effects of the new rules in the relationship between executive and legislative branches. Contrary to expectations, the new proceedings failed to reduce the number of presidential decrees. The use of the instrument increased in the years following the approval of the constitutional amendment. The main reason was the mechanism to limit the agenda under Constitutional Amendment n.32, which secured the president wide control over the legislative agenda. The provisional measures started to be assessed within 120 days, with a high percentage of approval. The unexpected effect of the constitutional amendment is explained through the flawed assumptions that led the campaign for the limitation of provisional measures. The \"usurpation of legislative powers\" was justified by the paralysis of Congressmen, who refrained from voting the provisional measures and left room for the Executive to legislate unilaterally. Broader use of the instrument in the period following the Constitutional Amendment n.32 confirms that the provisional measures are not used against the preferences of the majority. Instead, even with mandatory voting in the floor and the frequent use of legislative quorum denial mechanisms by the opposition, the government emerges victorious in most of the votes. Thus, control of the agenda is useful to coordinate the preferences of the majority and strengthen its power.

In this context, the comparative anatomy of the formation of the brachial plexus awakens interest since the nineteenth century and remains one of the most intriguing topics of contemporary anatomy. The aim of this study was to describe the origin and the antimeric distribution of the brachial plexus nerves in Macaca mulatta, as well as the innervated muscles. Ten male rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) were used, from the Non-human Primates? Breeding Department at the Laboratory Animals Breeding Centre (Cecal/Fiocruz), donated to the Animal Anatomy Department of the Rural Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRRJ). The specimens were fixed in formaldehyde solution by infusion of 10% solution. They were subsequently wrapped in a low-density polythene container with 500 liters of formaldehyde 30% solution over a period of 12 months. After this period, they were washed in running water and subjected to X-ray examinations of the neck at the Small Animals Veterinary Hospital of the UFRRJ to characterize the number of cervical vertebrae. Then, they had both antimeres dissected aiming at the exposure of the origins and the nerves arising from the brachial plexus. Data were presented both in absolute frequency and in simple percentage. In 11 (55%) animals the resulting nerves were constituted by the connections between the ventral spinal branches C5, C6, C7, C8 and T1. In 5 (25%) animals, the participants roots were C4, C5, C6, C7, C8, T1 and T2. In 2 (10%) animals C5, C6, C7, C8, T1 and T2. In the other 2 (10%) animals the formation of the plexus was observed from C6, C7, C8, T1 and T2. The ventral branches formed three nerve trunks: cranial, middle and caudal. The suprascapular nerves, subscapular, axillary, musculocutaneous, radial, median, ulnar innervated the intrinsic muscles and the subclavian nerve innervated the thoracodorsal, medial cutaneous arm and forearm, long thoracic, cranial pectoral and caudal pectoral innervate extrinsic muscles. The results obtained in this study contribute to the comparative anatomy of primates and to the information for applied research, serving as basis for clinical and surgical procedures that uses this species as an animal model.

Almost every private and public sector enterprise that we can think of, has been faced with the problem of locating facilities at one time or another of its history. Τhis has led to a strong interest in location analysis within the operations research and management science community. Locating a new bank branch, an important part of branch network planning and management is a complex decision making progress. This decision making progress can benefit from the use of Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) progress by making the progress more explicit, rational and efficient. In the present work we examine the problem of locating a bank branch using MCDM.
