The objectives in this study were to identify the mathematical function that best fits the growth of Canchim and MA (offspring of Charolais bulls and ½ Canchim + ½ Nelore cows) females, and to estimate the heritability of parameters A and k of the function that best fitted the data and the genetic correlations of these parameters with age (IPP) and weight (PPP) at first calving and age (ISP) and weight (PSP) at second calving. Brody, Richards, Von Bertalanffy and two alternatives of Gompertz and of Logistic non-linear models were fitted by Gauss Newton method and NLIN procedure of SAS. Weight-age data of 1,923 females born from 1972 to 2006, with weighing at least at 37 months of age and at most at 100 months of age, and with at least seven weighing were used. The comparison between the models was based on the biological interpretation of parameters and measures of quality of adjustment. The genetic parameters were estimated by the restricted maximum likelihood method using one and two-trait analyses with animal models that included the fixed effect of contemporary group and the random additive direct effect. The Brody and the Von Bertalanffy models adjusted the weight-age data well, while the others did not converge, and the Brody function was chosen to obtain the parameters A and k of each animal. The heritability estimates were 0.32 ± 0.05, 0.12 ± 0.04, 0.12 ± 0.04, 0.43 ± 0.06, 0.19 ± 0.06 and 0.44 ± 0.06 for A, k, IPP, PPP, ISP and PSP were, respectively. These values suggest that it is possible, but difficult to obtain changes in the pattern of the growth curve of the animals by selection. Estimates of genetic correlation of parameters A and k with the other traits suggest that selection to change A should cause changes in the same direction in PPI, PPP, ISP and PSP, and that changes in k, if they occur, should also be followed by changes in the other traits, but in the opposite direction

Estimativas de parâmetros genéticos de características reprodutivas de ovinos Santa Inês utilizando inferência Bayesiana

Montalván, Zoila Catalina Rabanal de 26 July 2013 (has links)
The objective of this study was to estimate the values of the (co)variance components and genetic parameters for reproductive traits in Santa Inês sheep raised in different states and registered with the Associação Sergipana dos Criadores de Caprinos e Ovinos (Goat and Sheep Breeders Association of Sergipe). The database used was provided by the Association and comprised pedigree observations originating from 11,483 registered individuals, out of which 2,238 were born in the program and had calving records, being part of the relationship matrix. After restriction application, there remained 843 animals for analysis which had data related to the age at first calving (IPP1), 151 with data related to the median calving interval (IPM2), and 151 to the interval between first and second calvings (IPS3). To obtain the values of (co)variance components and genetic parameters, we used the Bayesian inference under an animal model with the Gibbs sampling algorithm aided by the MTGSAM program. The two-trait linear model used considered the contemporary group as the fixed effect for IPP1, IPM2, and IPS3, and the type of calving and the age of the animal at calving as the covariate effect. The estimated values of h2 for IPP1, IPM2, and IPS3 were equal to 0.19 ± 0.0459, 0.0169 ± 0:36, and 0:35 ± 0.016 respectively. The estimated heritability for IPP1is considered average and the values for IPM2 and IPS3 were considered high, which leads to the conclusion that these characteristics can be used as selection criteria in a breeding program of Santa Inês sheep. The estimated value for the correlation between IPP1 and IPM2, and IPP1 and IP2, were negative and equal to rg12 = -0.2569 ± 0.0546, rg13= -0.1134 ± 0.0553, which were physiological expected low values that represent a trend which suggests individual selection for those traits. However, the rg23 shows a positive and high trend of 0.9601 ± 0.0091 for IPM2 and IPS3 suggesting indirect selection as the best option for these traits.

Reproduktionsmanagement in Milchviehbetrieben

Przewozny, Agnes 07 March 2011 (has links)
Brandenburger Milcherzeugerbetrieben erhoben. Die Fragen betrafen u.a. / This study provides a comprehensive characterization of current management methods of dairy farms, focusing on herd fertility. Relations of management factors to fertility and milk performance are analyzed following a bio-social approach. In 2007 a questionnaire survey including face-to-face interviews and direct observations was conducted in 84 East German dairy farms, mostly located in Brandenburg. Questions referred to housing, stress prevention, and management of herds, reproduction and personnel. Herd performance data stem from milk performance testing in 2007. Data analysis combined qualitative and quantitative methods. Calving interval (CI) and 305-day-milk yield (MY) were used as dependent variables. Mean values of herd size, CI and MY were, respectively, 306.3 cows (+/-238.3), 413.2d (+/-18.73d) and 8555kg (+/-1132.9). CI tended to decrease with increasing MY (r=-0.188, p=0.10). MY increased with rising herd size (r=0.29, p=0.01). Floors were wet and slippery in 71.25% of farms. In these farms CI tended to be longer (+16.6d, p=0.055) compared to farms with dry and non-slippery floors. Lying areas were in 29.9% of the farms dry and flexible. Here MY was higher (+1110kg, p=0.011) than in farms with wet and hard lying areas. A clear assignment of responsibility for heat detection showed a trend of decreasing CI (-6.3d, p=0.129). Female herd managers with academic qualification achieved a higher MY than likewise qualified men (+752.9kg, p=0.005), with no difference in CI. Thus, herds managed by highly qualified women showed a better MY:CI ratio. Employee motivation by material and social incentives or by allocating responsibility to workers and pursuing good communication was related to higher MY than motivation by performance pay alone (+1000kg, p=0.009); CI remained unaffected. Performance pay had no positive effect on targeted parameters. Results underscore the need for improved housing and recommend further study into personnel management in dairy farms.

Untersuchungen zu Milchejektionsstörungen bei erstlaktierenden Kühen

Heidig, Katrin 30 July 2007 (has links)
The present study was designed to describe the occurrence and determine the causes of disturbed milk ejection (= MES = Milchejektionsstörung) in production herds. The question was treated in an examination with five parts with difficult methods: record individually courses of calving and the first milkings, observe the behaviour in the last weeks before the calving, measure psychophysiological parameters (heartrate, elektromyogram, skin conduction and electrical skin resistance) during a test of stress sensitivity and during the first milkings and an genetic analysis. Nine saxonian herds were involved. The data record was for 20 months in the years 2004 / 2005 and cover 1767 heifers. We found clear connections between social strains, they work in the groups of animals and was caused through suboptimal environment, and the occurrence of MES. We found more MES in herds, where animals had a chronical stress situation in the last weeks bevor the calving. The most important stressors are the presence of multiparous cows in mixed groups with cows and heifers and the lack of room for motion in the box when heifers are alone. The circumstances of calving and the first milkings are not the primary causes of MES in this study, but they can influence this problem. So we found an increase of risk for MES, when 1. the time between the transport of animals in the calving box and the calving was too short, 2. the calf stayed with the cow, 3. the time between the calving and the first milking was too short 4. the animal has health problems in the time around the calving. The animals with the highest risk for MES have low stress resistance are unstable for stress, have a low range in the herd and showed an introverted behaviour (timid, humble) in the test. There was no difference in the stress sensitivity between the herds. During the first milkings we found just little differents at behaviour and at measured parameters between animals with and without MES. Animals with MES showed a small disposition to overreactions or to restrict the ability of reaction in elektrodermal parameters, but the differences are often not significant. We couldn´t found genetic causes of MES. The heritability was h² = 0,009. In conclusion, MES is an herd specific problem. In the herds that were examine, the important causes of MES are suboptimale environment and management of the groups of animals.
