Cultivating the Domain: Alexander Campbell, Print Capitalism, and Denomination Building in the Trans-Appalachian West, 1810-1850

January 2018 (has links)
abstract: This study examines how a populist religious leader, Alexander Campbell, altered the economic value system of religious material production in the early United States and, subsequently, the long-term value structure of religious economic systems generally. As religious publishing societies in the early nineteenth century were pioneering the not-for-profit corporation and as many popular itinerants manufactured religious spectacles around the country, Campbell combined the promotional methods of revivalism and the business practices of religious printers, with a conspicuously pugilistic tone to simultaneously build religious and business empires. He was a religious entrepreneur who capitalized on the opportunities of American revivalism for personal and religious gain. His opponents attacked his theology and his wealth as signs of his obvious error but few were prepared for the vigor of his answer. He invited conflict and challenged prominent opponents to grow his celebrity and extend his brand into new markets. He argued that his labor as a printer was deserving of compensation and that, unlike his “venal” clerical opponents, he offered his services as a preacher for free. As Americans in the early national period increasingly felt obligated to find the “right kind of Christianity,” Campbell packaged and sold a compelling product. In the decades that followed his first debate in 1820, he built a religious following that by 1850 numbered well over 100,000 followers. This dissertation considers the importance of marketing, promotion, investment capital, distribution networks, property law, print culture, and ideology, to the success of a given religious prescription in the nineteenth century American marketplace of religion. Campbell’s success reveals important social, political, and economic structures in the nineteenth century trans-Appalachian west. It also illuminates a form of religious entrepreneurialism that continues to be important to American Christianity. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation History 2018

The Journey from Innocence to Experience : Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials as a female Bildungsroman

Nordlén, Lisa January 2009 (has links)
In this essay the main aim is to consider Philip Pullman’s trilogy His Dark Materials with its female protagonist as a Bildungsroman. The principal source of the study is Jerome Buckley’s Season of Youth – The Bildungsroman from Dickens to Golding. Buckely’s presentation of the significant characteristics of the Bildungsroman will be applied to Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials in order to explore if these characteristics are present, modified or not, in the trilogy.   The second aim is to investigate how His Dark Materials relates to the patterns of the hero’s journey. In order to approach this question, Joseph Campbell’s work The Hero with a Thousand Faces is applied as a main source.    Since most material concerning both the Bildungsroman and the hero’s journey are from a male point of view and concern males, the female perspective will be represented by Susan Fraiman and Linda Wagner who both write about females and the bildung narrative.   In the section called The Story of Lyra, the trilogy is summarized briefly in order to give the reader a chance to understand what the trilogy is about. In the conclusion, Lyra’s development and (hero)-journey are discussed.     The final claim of the study is that His Dark Materials can be considered a Bildungsroman and the patterns of the hero journey are found in the story about Lyra, but with some differences from her male counterparts.

A Hero in Disgrace : The patterns of a hero in David Lurie's twist of fate

Petersson Hjärne, Jon January 2009 (has links)
In this essay I look at J.M Coetzee’s Disgrace from a rather different perspective. I argue that, despite his less than heroic attributes, David Lurie is the protagonist of an adventure and follows Joseph Campbell’s pattern of the hero’s ditto. Furthermore, the goal of David Lurie’s journey lies in self-realization and self-reinvention, which is not typical for the hero’s journey. The Ultimate Boon is usually something else but different times call for different heroes. In J.M. Coetzee and the Ethics of Reading, Derek Attridge suggests that David Lurie grows on the reader throughout the novel and is a better person at the end (Attridge 183). This indicates that David Lurie goes through a process personally that changes him in a positive direction. Besides Campbell’s theory, the theories of Propp and Stanford are presented and put to good use as theoretical background. Since this essay deals with both narratology and structuralism I provide short explanations of these two branches of literature criticism as presented in Peter Barry’s Beginning Theory. I then discuss relevant passages from Disgrace in connection with the different stages of the hero’s journey as described by Campbell. I do so in the order they are presented in Campbell’s book.

Ett slag för monomyten : En komparativ undersökning av monomytens manifestation i Onepunch-man / One punch for the monomyth : A comparative study of the manifestation of the monomyth in Onepunch-man

Löfström, Ludvig January 2016 (has links)
The Hero with a Thousand Faces (1949).

A review on the modeling of fission chambers

Lyric, Zoairia January 1900 (has links)
Master of Science / Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering / Douglas S. McGregor / Fission chambers are ideal neutron flux surveillance instruments to ensure nuclear reactor control and safety. They can provide online, in-core, real-time measurements covering the dynamic range of neutron flux including pulse, Campbell, and current mode over decades of reactor operation cycles. The first patented fission chamber was developed by Baer et al. in 1957. It was a cylindrical assembly thermal fission counter having sensitivity of 0.7 count/neutron cm⁻² for a background measurement of 5 counts/second with ability to operate at a temperature range of 20-80 ºC [3]. Since then, fission chamber technology was developed to come up with miniature and sub-miniature dimensions withstanding high irradiation and high temperature environment making them suitable for in-core online diagnosis. Since the introduction of high temperature fission chamber technology starting in the 1970’s, the need of the advancement in modeling of the fission chambers to improve their performance has become important. The development of modeling depends upon the understanding and consideration of underlying physics of these detectors. The validation of modeling of fission chambers will need the quantification of uncertainty introduced at every stage from neutron-deposit interaction to signal shaping. Based on this objective, a detailed review was performed on fission chamber modeling and simulation covering neutron flux self-shielding, fissile deposit evolution, fission product emission, auto-absorption, electron-ion pair creation, charge recombination and avalanche, space charge effect, charge transport, propagation of electronic pulse and pulse shaping. The analytical methods, algorithmic treatments, simulation, and computation codes used so far in case of modeling different aspects of fission chambers were reviewed. Along with the numerical methods and computer codes for simulating electron drift and charge transport for the usual gas chamber detectors, the use of several fissile material evolution techniques and computation codes were observed in case of fission chamber modeling. The use higher order statistics to handle fluctuation mode and to treat noisy data were observed. In recent years, fission chamber modeling made reasonable improvement in detail physics modeling. Several analytical methods like advanced statistics for Campbellng mode and electric field distortion due to space charge effect need to be incorporated in computation codes. More progress in the areas of evolution of gas behavior, consideration of Penning, recombination, and avalanche effect still needed.

En nattlig resa mot det heliga bröllopet : En studie av indivduationsprocessen i Michael Romkeys roman I, Vampire / A nocturnal voyage towards the holy wedding : A study of the individuation process in Michael Romkey's novel I, Vampire

Törnsten, Tommy January 2017 (has links)
This study attempts to find out if a reading of Michael Romekys novel I, Vampire through the theories presented by psychoanalyst C. G. Jung adds anything to the understanding of the novels narrative. More precisely it attempts to read the novel as an individuation process, a Jungian concept in which an individuals damaged psyche heals itself, of the novels protagonist. This reading is based upon the assumption that the protagonist, David, suffers a trauma when he divorces his wife Clarice. This trauma, and divorce, is read as a split between David ego and his anima, his female aspect. When he is on the brink of suicide, Tatiana shows up, turn him in to a vampire and give his life new meaning. Tatiana is read as his anima, the part of himself that i distanced himself from during the divorce, and he now needs to assimilate with again. This assimilationwhat Jung names the conuncitio, is the goal of the individuation process. In order to success with this individuation process David has to meet and overcome the dark and damaged parts of himself; his shadow aspects to use the Jungian language. These are represented by the evil vampires Jack the Ripper and von Baden. It is only after meeting, and defeating this shadow aspects, and after a rigorous mental training, in order to strengthen his mental abilities, that David can unite with his anima, Tatiana, in the alchemical wedding. The Jungian goal of the individuation process. I find in this study that to read this novel through a Jungian screen show aspects otherwise hidden. The narrative structure, and the symbols in the novel, have a distinct Jungian flavour which give the novel a meaning perhaps not seen on the surface.

Sleep Deprivation in the Intensive Care Unit: Lowering Elective Intervention Times

Ross Purdie, La Von Michelle 01 January 2019 (has links)
Sleep deprivation is a multifactorial phenomenon, occurring frequently in the intensive care unit (ICU) and linked to adverse patient healthcare outcomes. The key practice question of this project focused on determining if retiming of routine laboratory and imaging testing outside of the designated “quiet time” can improve sleep quality among adult patients in the ICU. The purpose was to evaluate the effectiveness of implementing an evidence-based intervention to improve sleep quality in the ICU setting. The theoretical framework was the plan-do-study-act model, which offered a process for implementing a practice change and reevaluation of the intervention’s sustainability within the organization. A thorough literature search of over 100 scholarly journal articles, book references, and expert scholarly reports was completed to gain an understanding of this phenomenon in the ICU setting. The Richards-Campbell Sleep Questionnaire (RCSQ) was the data collection tool used to measure improvement in sleep quality. There were 72 participants that are included in the project. The Wilcoxon rank sum and chi square tests were used for the statistical analysis. The findings did not show statistical significance in the improvement in the RCSQ scores after implementation of the intervention. The recommendations include sleep deprivation training for nursing staff and providers, routine use of the RCSQ for data collection, and repeating the study with an increased number of participants and redefined inclusion and exclusion criteria to be more representative of the ICU patient population. The implication for social change is that this project empowers nursing to embrace a leadership role in using evidence-based practice to change clinical guidelines and improve patient outcomes.
