Experimental Investigation of Steel Pipe Pile to Concrete Cap Connections

Eastman, Ryan S. 19 April 2011 (has links) (PDF)
Piles are often used to resist vertical and lateral loads when shallow foundations are inadequate or uneconomical. A critical part in designing pile foundations is the pile-to-cap connection. When a moment resisting connection is desired, reinforcement is typically used between the pile and the cap. A pile-to-cap connection with sufficient pile embedment depth, however, may provide similar results. One model that is currently used to determine the capacity of a pile-to-cap connection was developed by Marcakis and Mitchell for steel members embedded in concrete. This model considers an embedment mechanism that resists rotation at the connection. Recent testing has shown, however, that this model is conservative and that additional mechanisms contribute to the strength of the connection. An experimental study was conducted to investigate pile-to-cap connections for pipe piles without reinforcement. Three pile-to-cap specimens with varying pile embedment depth were loaded laterally to failure. The results from the testing confirm that pile-to-cap connections with shallow pile embedment depth have significant stiffness. An improved model was developed to estimate elastic and ultimate capacities of embedded connections. In addition to the embedment mechanism used by Marcakis and Mitchell, this model includes a bearing mechanism at the end of the pile. For pile-to-cap connections with a large pile bearing area to pile embedment depth ratio, this bearing mechanism provides more strength than the embedment mechanism. For pile-to-cap connections with a small pile bearing area to pile embedment depth ratio, this bearing mechanism has little contribution to the strength of the connection.

Goodwill och dess påverkan på lönsamhet / Goodwill and its impact on profitability

Hultberg, Victor, Rehn, Patrik January 2015 (has links)
Goodwill represents 16.5 percent of Swedish listed companies' total assets. The trend is increasing, and in some cases exceeds the goodwill equity. Goodwill represents such a large part, implies a risk since amortization of goodwill strikes directly against equity. The discussions about goodwill have been many and has been a hot topic in the accounting industry. Accounting Researchers are dual of goodwill shall be recognized as an asset or not. Some argue that goodwill does not fit the definition of an asset, others argue that goodwill may contain components that not contributes to profitability. Furthermore, other research found that goodwill is used as a tool for earnings manipulation. Studies in Great Britain, Germany and the USA show that goodwill tends to generate returns and supporting the case for goodwill is a rent generating asset. No previous research has specifically studied the Swedish market and how goodwill affects profitability, which is the focus of this paper. The purpose of this paper is to improve the knowledge of goodwill by examining whether it is possible to identify goodwill as a rent generating asset. In relation to the purpose of this paper, a quantitative survey conducted in which 106 companies on the Large Cap and Mid Cap has been studied 2010-2013, to see if company with goodwill has better profitability than companies without goodwill. The main result of this paper is that companies with goodwill have better profitability than companies without goodwill. This result is also consistent with earlier research in other countries. However, this paper result shows that there is no significant correlation between goodwill and profitability when only the Mid Cap companies are analyzed. The size of the company may be of importance on whether goodwill is a rent generating asset or not. Furthermore, this paper also examined if companies that are already profitable, acquires more and consequently increases their goodwill more than other companies. This paper results cannot confirm this fact since there is no significant correlation.

The Effect of Calcified Plaque on Stress Within a Fibrous Thin Cap Atheroma in an Atherosclerotic Coronary Artery Using Finite Element Analysis (FEA)

Nagy, Ellerie 01 September 2010 (has links) (PDF)
Atherosclerosis causes hundreds of thousands of deaths in the US alone every year. Fibrous cap rupture is one of the leading causes of these fatalities. Thin cap atheromas are commonly regarded as vulnerable plaque, however the effect of calcium upon a thin fibrous cap with lipid pool is poorly understood. Some studies have shown that calcium adds to stability of the lesion, while others have proven otherwise. An article by Li et al. 2007 suggests location is the key factor. By varying the percentage of calcium and lipid within a defined region, the stress on the cap was estimated using an idealized finite element arterial model. Also the thickness of the fibrous cap was varied to determine whether the stress was solely a function of lipid percentage or a combination. Plaque, arterial wall, lipid, and calcium were modeled using linear elastic, isotropic, and incompressible material properties. The first test varied the thin cap thickness from 65 to 500 microns and tested the calcified lipid model at varying lipid/calcium percentages. The lipid/Calcium pool increased/decreased 10% each test. As the cap thickness becomes thinner than 100 microns, the stress level increases rapidly. The second test compared a model with lipid pool and calcium behind the lipid with a thin cap of 65 microns to a model with lipid pool of the same size and thin cap of 65 microns but only fibrous tissue surrounding (no calcium). The lipid pool increased from 10 to 90% lipid. The result of this test found that at higher lipid percentages, the calcium increased the stress on the cap. By understanding the material properties of plaque and the structure of the lesion, future developments may be able to evaluate rupture risk. This idealized study illustrates the ability of computation models to provide insight into clinical situations.

Investigation of the Resistance of Pile Caps to Lateral Loading

Mokwa, Robert L. 02 October 1999 (has links)
Bridges and buildings are often supported on deep foundations. These foundations consist of groups of piles coupled together by concrete pile caps. These pile caps, which are often massive and deeply buried, would be expected to provide significant resistance to lateral loads. However, practical procedures for computing the resistance of pile caps to lateral loads have not been developed, and, for this reason, cap resistance is usually ignored. Neglecting cap resistance results in estimates of pile group deflections and bending moments under load that may exceed the actual deflections and bending moments by 100 % or more. Advances could be realized in the design of economical pile-supported foundations, and their behavior more accurately predicted, if the cap resistance can be accurately assessed. This research provides a means of assessing and quantifying many important aspects of pile group and pile cap behavior under lateral loads. The program of work performed in this study includes developing a full-scale field test facility, conducting approximately 30 lateral load tests on pile groups and pile caps, performing laboratory geotechnical tests on natural soils obtained from the site and on imported backfill materials, and performing analytical studies. A detailed literature review was also conducted to assess the current state of practice in the area of laterally loaded pile groups. A method called the "group-equivalent pile" approach (abbreviated GEP) was developed for creating analytical models of pile groups and pile caps that are compatible with established approaches for analyzing single laterally loaded piles. A method for calculating pile cap resistance-deflection curves (p-y curves) was developed during this study, and has been programmed in the spreadsheet called PYCAP. A practical, rational, and systematic procedure was developed for assessing and quantifying the lateral resistance that pile caps provide to pile groups. Comparisons between measured and calculated load-deflection responses indicate that the analytical approach developed in this study is conservative, reasonably accurate, and suitable for use in design. The results of this research are expected to improve the current state of knowledge and practice regarding pile group and pile cap behavior. / Ph. D.

Verville, Jean-François 16 April 2018 (has links)

Morphology and dynamics of storm-time ionospheric density structures

Thomas, Evan Grier 04 March 2016 (has links)
Accurate knowledge of the electron density structure of the Earth's upper atmosphere is crucial to forecasting the performance of transionospheric radio signals. For this research, we focus on storm-time structuring in the mid- to high latitude ionosphere where large gradients in electron density can cause severe degradation of communication and navigation signals. We begin in Chapter 2 with a review of the primary data sets and methods used to accomplish the collaborative, multi-instrument studies described in this dissertation. In Chapter 3, we compare observational techniques for tracking polar cap patches during a moderate geomagnetic storm interval. For the first time, we monitor the transportation of patches with high spatial and temporal resolution across the polar cap for 1--2~h using a combination of GPS TEC, all-sky airglow imagers (ASIs), and Super Dual Auroral Radar Network (SuperDARN) HF radar backscatter. Simultaneous measurements from these data sets allow for continuous tracking of patch location, horizontal extent, and velocity even under adverse observational conditions for one or more of the techniques. A focus is placed on the structuring of patches, particularly on the nightside ionosphere as they become wider in the dawn-dusk direction and develop narrow finger-like structures. In Chapter 4, we perform a superposed epoch analysis to characterize the average response of GPS TEC in the North American sector during more than 100 geomagnetic storms over a 13-year interval. For the first time a rigorous approach is used to fully separate storm-time, local time, longitudinal, and seasonal effects at midlatitudes where dense ground receiver coverage is available. The rapid onset of a positive phase is observed across much of the dayside and evening ionosphere followed by a longer-lasting negative phase across all latitudes and local times. Our results show clear seasonal variations in the storm-time TEC, such that summer events tend to be dominated by the negative storm response while winter events exhibit a stronger initial positive phase with minimal negative storm effects. A prominent magnetic declination effect is identified and examined in terms of thermospheric zonal winds pushing plasma upward/downward along magnetic field lines of opposite declination. Finally in Chapter 5 we summarize several co-authored studies which examined various storm-time phenomena utilizing GPS TEC mapping tools developed for this dissertation research, with topics including subauroral polarization stream (SAPS), storm enhanced density (SED), tongue of ionization (TOI), and polar cap patches. / Ph.

Jean, Steve 13 April 2018 (has links)
