Capacidades organizacionais para a inovação frugal / Organizational capabilities for frugal innovationSilva, Itiel Moraes da 03 May 2018 (has links)
In recent years, new types of innovation have emerged in emerging markets. Among them, the concept of frugal innovation has attracted the attention of academics and professionals for its value proposition. Frugal innovation has been considered a new source of innovation, but few scholarly papers discuss the subject in a robust way. This research aims to ascertain the association between certain organizational capabilities that help in the development of the frugal innovation. Prior to this association, it was necessary to demonstrate how the concept of frugal innovation can be measured. In this study, frugal innovation is an endogenous construct of the second order, which manifests the new with fewer resources, reflexively measured by: innovation in cost, sustainable innovation, open innovation and product innovation. Organizational capabilities are the exogenous constructs defined in terms of: production capability, technological capability, human capital capability and marketing capability. These capabilities were considered to be first and second order. To verify the relationship between the defined constructs, the methodological procedures adopted in this research can be classified as formal, descriptive and associative, positivistic and quantitative in nature. For the data collection, the survey method adopted was the survey classified as intersectional. The data were collected is composed of 257 Brazilian companies of different sectors and sizes. The process of sample analysis and consistency of data collected consisted of the use of statistical techniques of univariate and multivariate analysis. The use of Structural Equation Analysis using the Partial Least Square (PLS) method was more adequate for estimation of model parameters. The results have shown that frugal innovation is a strategy that combines cost efficiency and innovation. Frugal innovation can contribute to a better management of non-renewable environmental resources when oriented towards sustainability. The analysis of the results, showed that of the eight hypotheses raised, only two hypotheses were not supported. Human capital and first-order marketing capabilities were not associated with the formation of frugal innovation. The other capabilities used in the research were shown to be associated to the proposed model.

The antecedents and consequences of relational capabilities in strategic alliance management : a study of Thai manufacturing sectorRungsithong, Rapeeporn January 2014 (has links)
This research investigates the antecedents and consequences of relational capabilities in the context of strategic alliance projects between MNE subsidiaries and local suppliers in the Thai manufacturing sector. The need to understand the relational capabilities approach is recognised in management literature, especially the ambiguous effects of the relational and economic dimensions, on relational capabilities in cross-cultural alliance projects. In particular, academics have highlighted the importance of relational capabilities, trust and transaction cost factors in that they play important roles in determining alliance success, especially in the context of cross-cultural alliances. A theoretical framework is developed which, first, explores the antecedents and barriers of relational capabilities and second, examines the multiple mediation effect of these on the link between inter-organizational conditions and alliance performance. The research design is aligned with quantitative methodology. The theoretical frameworks were tested using the data obtained from 156 strategic alliance projects between MNE subsidiaries and local suppliers in the Thai manufacturing sector with hierarchical regression analysis and the bootstrapping technique. The empirical results indicate that inter-personal trust, inter-organizational trust and asset specificity are antecedents of relational capabilities, while HR distance between alliance partners is not a barrier of these capabilities. Moreover, the empirical outcomes in relation to the indirect effect of the relational and economic dimensions on alliance performance through knowledge sharing routines and complementary capability are supported. However, the remaining hypotheses pertaining to the expectation that effective governance mechanisms are mediators on those relationships are rejected. This is explained by the fact that trust-based relationships are so deeply embedded in the Thai manufacturing sector that they predominate over such mechanisms. The contribution of this research is twofold: first, in terms of academic advancement, it combines the arguments of trust and TCE to provide a holistic view in explaining antecedents and consequences of relational capabilities. Second, in terms of practical contribution, it improves the understanding of practitioners both purchasing managers of MNE subsidiaries and sales managers, regarding the alignment of trust and asset specificity with relational capabilities to achieve better performance in cross-cultural strategic alliance projects.

The main theme of this thesis is organizational longevity. Studies about companies located in the united states and in europe indicate that the average organizational life span is decreasing and that the life cycle of organizations is becoming smaller that the average for human beings. Within the brazilian context, specifically, economical turbulences occurred during the 1980s and the 1990s contributed to the closure of many firms. Researches about the brazilian business atmosphere indicate that, in certain sectors, more than 80% of the firms that existed in 1973 and that were in the list of the biggest 500 were no longer present in the 2005 list . One of the most affected sectors was retail. Traditional companies of this segment were not able to face environmental and sectorial changes, and discontinued their activities. Others, however, overcame difficulties and thrive. In order to identify how a firm prospered in an environment in which others failed, the present thesis was designed to perform a longitudinal case study. The main objective was to identify how lojas renner a retail firm that completes 90 years in 2012 faced difficulties and prospered in a sector in which other companies disappeared during the last 30 years. Data collection came mainly from interviews with six top executives that were responsible for the strategic decisions taken during the last 45 years of the history of the firm. Additionally, all annual reports in the period of 1979-2009 were analyzed and a search in newspapers and magazines was performed. The results indicate that the company overcame adversities and prospered not just because it identified a favorable position with respect to competitive forces of the sector, but, also, because it made coherent strategic choices. The firm reorganize activities, developed new capacities and competences and innovated in its base of resources. Furthermore, the firm was able to develop analytic, detailed and properly organized processes based not only in its own knowledge, but, also, in the attraction and acquisition of. The results also showed that the theoretical guideposts, initially considered as alternatives, when adopted together could explain in a more appropriate manner how the firm was able to recover and prosper in a turbulent environment.

CAPABILITIES INSIDE FOUR WALLS : A qualitative field study on the capabilities and freedoms for women in a developing context challenging the approach of Amartya SenJakobsson, Olivia, Kaur Logani, Talvin January 2019 (has links)
The ‘’capability approach’’, developed by the Indian economist Amartya Sen, has been widely used in the field of development and has contributed a perception of development that is different from the traditional understanding of it. Despite this, the theory has received a great amount of feminist critique and it has been concluded that the field lacks empirical data on how women in developing countries can be fully understood from the approach of Sen. This field study aims at filling this gap of empirical data as well as to examine how well Sen’s approach can contribute to the understanding of women in a developing context. Responses such as the one of Martha Nussbaum and other feminist critique of Sen is examined using a field study on poor women conducted in the state of Karnataka, India. The collection of data has been conducted through interviews with urban poor women as well as with women working with women empowerment at a local organization. Participant observation in the field has been complementary to the interviews. This study reveals that Sen’s capability approach is incomplete to some extent in order to understand the situation of women in a developing context. This lack of understanding is further completed with Nussbaum’s work. Finally, the modern feminist critique against both Sen and Nussbaum shows a lack of analysis in them both in terms of intersectionality and power.

High-performance memory safety : optimizing the CHERI capability machineJoannou, Alexandre Jean-Michel Procopi January 2018 (has links)
This work presents optimizations for modern capability machines and specifically for the CHERI architecture, a 64-bit MIPS instruction set extension for security, supporting fine-grained memory protection through hardware-enforced capabilities. The original CHERI model uses 256-bit capabilities to carry information required for various checks helping to enforce memory safety, leading to increased memory bandwidth requirements and cache pressure when using CHERI capabilities in place of conventional 64-bit pointers. In order to mitigate this cost, I present two new 128-bit CHERI capability formats, using different compression techniques, while preserving C-language compatibility lacking in previous pointer compression schemes. I explore the trade-offs introduced by these new formats over the 256-bit format. I produce an implementation in the L3 ISA modeling language, collaborate on the hardware implementation, and provide an evaluation of the mechanism. Another cost related to CHERI capabilities is the memory traffic increase due to capability-validity tags: to provide unforgeable capabilities, CHERI uses a tagged memory that preserves validity tags for every 256-bit memory word in a shadowspace inaccessible to software. The CHERI hardware implementation of this shadowspace uses a capability-validity-tag table in memory and caches it at the end of the cache hierarchy. To efficiently implement such a shadowspace and improve on CHERI’s current approach, I use sparse data structures in a hierarchical tag-cache that filters unnecessary memory accesses. I present an in-depth study of this technique through a Python implementation of the hierarchical tag-cache, and also provide a hardware implementation and evaluation. I find that validity-tag traffic is reduced for all applications and scales with tag use. For legacy applications that do not use tags, there is near zero overhead. Removing these costs through the use of the proposed optimizations makes the CHERI architecture more affordable and appealing for industrial adoption.

The aim of the present study is to analyze the approach of the capabilities in the work of Amartya Sen to identify how these capabilities influence in human and social development. We will try to understand the reasons that led Amartya Sen to defend freedom as the key to development. We will look at the opportunities, rights and freedoms that are present in his capability theory, starting from his formulations expressed in the text ‘Equality of What?` - written in the year of 1979 - in order to arrive at the work ‘The Idea of Justice’ - published in Brazil in 2011. During this course, we will visit his formulations expressed in his writings ‘Reexamined Inequality’; ‘Development as capacity expansion’ and ‘Development as freedom’. The general objective of this work is to study Sen’s capabilities to delineate its evolution and identify in what proportion the capabilities contribute to development. The analysis will be limited to a philosophical approach and will be important for us to understand the needs and values that justify people's individual choices. For the success of the investigation we will try to answer the following questions: I) What is equality according to Sen's theory? (ii) How did Amartya Sen present his idea of capabilities throughout his work? (iii) Is it possible to affirm that there were substantial interpretative modifications in Sen’s theory of capabilities? (iv) What is the sense of freedom to Amartya Sen? (v) In what aspects does the Capabilities approach allow us to understand development as freedom? The central methodological strategy of this study is essentially theoretical and the analytical procedures will occur through a review of the literature around the researched topic. Besides reading the indicated works of the author we will seek dialogue with his critics. As a result we intend to clarify how freedom when associated to social, political and economical activities can be considered as an instrument for measuring progress and also a social efficacy ratio, extrapolating the gaps of evaluation of other theories.

Dynamic Capabilities is an approach that explains how companies can obtain competitive advantage along the time trough of perceiving, seizing, and reconfiguring their internal and external competencies in high volatility environments. The objective of this research is to identify and analyze how companies inserted in a low volatility environment operationalize the elements of dynamic capabilities. A descriptive qualitative research was conducted through semi-structured interviews with two textile companies in a region of Santa Catarina, the state which is responsible for a large part of Brazilian production. The history and relevant facts that occurred in these companies and contributed for changes were analyzed, verifying in these moments, the occurrence of the objective. Through the analysis, it was verified that the companies need dynamic capabilities, independent of the environment they are inserted, and that they are important in the companies even in environments of low volatility. But in this type of company, this does not occur disruptively, they are incremental and happen informally, through the intuition of the partners. Companies that operate dynamic capabilities are able to integrate their resources and competencies, creating and sustaining advantages over competitors.

Dynamic capabilities, defined as “the firm’s ability to integrate, build, and reconfigure internal and external competences to address rapidly changing environments” (TEECE et al., 1997 p.516), are associated with innovation and firm performance. Extant conceptual work also highlights that the role of dynamic capabilities must be examined in connection with organizational environment and context, such as firm strategy (Wang and Ahmed, 2007). However, little empirical evidence exists regarding the above relationships. Motivated by this research gap, this paper aims to investigate the relationship between dynamic capabilities and innovation performance, taking in account the influence of environmental turbulence and firm strategy, drawing on quantitative data based on a large-scale survey in the Brazilian chemical and electronics sectors. A telephone survey resulted in a total of 471 firms operating in the Chemical and Electronic sectors in Brazil. The data collected were tested using the Structural Equations Modeling and Regression Analysis from which the model from Wang and Ahmed (2007) was tested. The key research constructs were validated using multidimensional scaling and demonstrated reasonable reliability and validity. The results of this study found a positive and significant relationship between all variables, with all hypothesis been confirmed, which implies that the environmental turbulence is an antecedent of dynamic capabilities and that dynamic capabilities positively influence the innovative performance. The study also showed that compared with adaptive, innovative and integrative capabilities, the clarity of organizational goals and absorptive capacity had stronger influence on innovation performance. This suggests that, in addition to sensing environmental change, acquiring and absorbing relevant information from the environment, the individuals in the firm must also have a sense of what the firm’s objectives are in order to improve innovation performance. The mediating effect of dynamic capabilities in the relationship between the environmental turbulence and firm’s competitive strategy was also proved, suggesting that as the environment becomes turbulent, the importance of dynamic capabilities increases and organizations adapt their strategy accordingly. These findings contribute to the understanding of the aspects towards dynamic capabilities, concerning its antecedents and effects on firm’s strategy, which is step forward in filling the gap found in the literature on innovative performance at firm level. Although the constructs built on dynamic capabilities and on innovative performance presented good reliability and validity, it is suggested further test for its consolidation.

The expansion of international offshoring of services is a business opportunity for companies established in countries with qualified human resources at competitive costs, but studies show that reducing costs is not the only factor which motivates offshore services. It is understood by offshoring business operations developed abroad, particularly in countries with emerging economies. In addition to a search for cost savings through offshoring operations, companies have attempted to search capabilities, as a way to sustain and even lead to competitive advantage over competitors. This study aimed to analyze how does the integration of Brazilian service providers happens in projects of international companies in the chain of information technology (IT). The literature on offshoring and outsourcing operations services was explored, as well as studies on skills related to IT services. As a research strategy, a case study was developed. A Brazilian IT company, Qualitá, was investigated, whose services are provided for a major international company, HP. The data obtained suggests that the outsourcing relationship established between HP and Qualitá was established based on the capabilities revealed by the service of Qualitá, both in levels of technical and management capabilities. The data also show that the operation was replaced by an investment of HP in a captive offshoring operation, which may mean low maturity of local companies on receiving services in a wide offshoring perspective.

Previous issue date: 2011-03-31 / CAPES - Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The main objective of this dissertation is to understand how companies develop capability to manage and implement offshore operations. Even though offshore operations is not a new subject – it has been practiced by companies for a long time, and is a growing operations practice employed by companies worldwide – academic efforts are still needed to achieve a full understanding of this phenomenon. One of those efforts is the comprehension of the strategic aspects of offshore. Offshore has implications for the strategic management field because it can instigate a firm to develop new capabilities and resources. In addition, companies have also moved high skill and core business activities overseas, requiring implementation of new organizational measures. For instance, literature has suggested that capabilities development is important to undertake more complex offshore processes and to overcome managerial challenges and implementation barriers. Thus, this study integrates Dynamic Capabilities as a main theory lens and offshore operations as organizational context. More specifically, this study takes Dynamic Capabilities as the “firm's ability to integrate, build, and reconfigure internal and external competences to address rapidly changing environments” (Teece, Pisano, & Shuen, 1997, p. 516). This concept emphasizes Dynamic Capabilities as a set of organizational processes, which result in the development of specific capabilities in order to fit with environmental conditions. This study also takes offshore operations as “the movement or relocation of domestic firm activities and operations abroad” (Bunyaratavej, Hahn, & Doh, 2008, p.227). Thus, the study offers a twofold contribution to the field. First, it explores how companies develop capability to manage offshore operations. Second, it explores the role of three dynamic capabilities elements (paths, positions, and processes) in the development of such capabilities. In order to achieve its objectives, eight case studies with manufacturing companies that have implemented captive offshore 6 operations were carried out. The qualitative data were collected through semi-structured interviews. The interview protocol was developed to cover elements related to dynamic capabilities and offshore based on a literature review. Using theory building through case studies, it was possible to obtain research outcomes such as types of offshore operations implemented by the companies; strategic roles of offshore operations; barriers to implement offshore operations; coordination mechanisms, resources, and capabilities developed by companies to implement offshore operations; and the role of dynamic capabilities elements (paths, positions, processes, and firm-specific DC processes) on the development of capability to manage and implement offshore operations. We also suggest propositions and an integrated model. Finally, this study contributes to practitioners by suggesting methods used by companies that have been developing capability to manage offshore operations. / The main objective of this dissertation is to understand how companies develop capability to manage and implement offshore operations.
