This thesis examines the stress relaxation phenomenon that may occur in stainless steel rods that are used as part of an all-stainless steel externally post-tensioned rod system for strengthening reinforced concrete pier caps in shear. An overview of the stress relaxation phenomenon and its modeling is presented. Previous work on stress relaxation of stainless steel is reviewed and used to select an appropriate stress relaxation model to analyze the stress relaxation data obtained from experiments performed during this research. An experimental program utilizing six specimens of Type 304/304L stainless steel stainless steel rods similar to those likely to be candidates for pier cap rehabilitation is presented, and the data are analyzed using the model identified from the review. This model reasonably captures the behavior of the resulting stress relaxation with time, and calculates stress values that are fairly close to those obtained experimentally. Using this model to predict long-term stress losses in a service environment, guidelines for design and installation of the post-tensioned stainless steel rods are proposed.

L’hydrogène constitue un vecteur d’énergie très important. En effet, il est abondant à l’état combiné et sa combustion est très énergétique et non polluante. En revanche, le mode de stockage le plus sécurisant de ce gaz explosif c’est dans les métaux sous forme d’hydrure. Parmi ces métaux, le magnésium est l’un des plus prometteurs car il possède une capacité massique de stockage élevée (7,6%), un faible coût et une abondance naturelle. Cependant ses cinétiques de sorption sont lentes et son hydrure MgH2 est très stable et mauvais conducteur. L’objectif de ce travail de thèse est de contribuer à la résolution des points faibles du magnésium, en lui ajoutant des fibres de carbone comme renfort soit par broyage énergétique pour assurer une bonne intimité entre les deux, soit par coulage en bande, une technique qui permet d’orienter les fibres, pour un maximum de conductivité thermique. Nous étions donc intéressés à l’étude des cinétiques d’absorption/désorption où une amélioration a été observée après l’ajout du carbone par broyage. Une étude de la conductivité thermique était encore intéressante où le matériau préparé par coulage en bande, comme prévu, a présenté un très bon résultat. D’autre part, nous avons effectué des tests d’hydrolyse pour la production délocalisée d’hydrogène. Ayant comme problème la formation d’une couche imperméable de Mg(OH)2 en surface qui bloque la réaction, différents paramètres ont été modifiés (pH, T°, taille des particules, US) et cela a donné un impact positif sur le rendement en hydrogène et la cinétique de la réaction. Finalement, deux procédés de déformation plastique sévère i) le laminage et ii) l’ECAP ont été appliqués sur du TiH2 et du MgH2. Ces deux techniques ont présenté un pouvoir de déstabilisation des hydrures et donc une diminution de la température de déshydruration. Ils ont encore montré un comportement différent du broyage mécanique de point de vue microcontrainte et orientation des plans cristallins. / Hydrogen is a very important energy carrier. Indeed, it is abundant in the combined state and its combustion, very energetic, is non-polluting. However, the safest storage mode of this explosive gas is in the metal hydride form. Among metals, magnesium is one of the most promising one because its high mass capacity storage (7. 6%), low cost and natural abundance. However its kinetics of sorption are slow and its hydride MgH2 is very stable and has a poor thermal conductivity. The objective of this thesis is to resolve most of the weaknesses of magnesium by adding carbon fibers as reinforcement using the ball milling process, a way to ensure a good contact between the two, either by tape casting, a technique to help in the fibers’ orientation, for a maximum of thermal conductivity. We were therefore interested in the study of absorption / desorption kinetics, where an improvement was observed after the addition of carbon by grinding. A study of the thermal conductivity was also interesting, and the material prepared by tape casting, as expected, gave a very good result. On the other hand, we performed some hydrolysis’ tests to produce hydrogen. Having the problem of Mg(OH)2 formation on the surface, that blocks the reaction; different parameters were modified (e. G. PH, T°, particle size, U. S. ), which showed a positive impact on the hydrogen yield and reaction kinetics. Finally, two severe plastic deformation methods: i) cold rolling and ii) ECAP were applied to the TiH2 and MgH2 samples. Both techniques showed a destabilizing power of hydrides and therefore a decrease in the temperature of dehydrogenation. They even showed different behaviors than the mechanical grinding from microstrain and planes orientation point of view.

Un tiers des urgences dentaires et un pourcentage élevé de maux de dents sont endodontie liés. Instruments rotatifs utilisés dans le traitement endodontique peuvent se briser à l'intérieur du canal radiculaire en raison de la fatigue des matériaux. Une fois cassé, l'extraction de la partie fracturée du canal est un travail difficile et ennuyeux de le patient et le dentiste. Par conséquent, l'alerte d'une fracture imminente lors de l'utilisation clinique ou développer de bonnes stratégies pour augmenter ses propriétés mécaniques sera d'une grande aide pour éviter les complications médicales / juridique. La recherche est étudié à partir de deux parties. La première partie a établi une plate-forme de test standard, simulant plusieurs paramètres de canal, propose une série de stratégies visant à améliorer la vie de la fatigue et des propriétés mécaniques de matériaux. Aussi, un système de surveillance utilisant de réseaux de Bragg (FBG) capteurs a été tentée. la raison de l'utilisation de la glycémie à jeun est sa petite taille qui est très prometteur dans l'intégration avec la pièce à main de l'équipement endodontique. dans le travail actuel, en ramassant et en analysant l'onde de contrainte par transformée de Fourier rapide (FFT), nous peut révéler la variation d'énergie et la fréquence phénomène déplaçant dans certaines fréquences caractéristiques. on espère que, avec ces informations, nous pouvons éviter / atténuer la survenue de fracture inattendue. Contrairement à la fabrication traditionnelle du PPT, qui avait une limitation de sa taille de produits en raison du faible pouvoir lase, taux de redoublement et piézo entraîné stade, nous utilisons résine Ormocer, 130 kHz, 1W puissant laser de 532 nm à l'étape motorisé étage XY pour fabriquer une grande 800 échafaud um cellulaire bio-compatible et 1.2 cm aiguille de hauteur. aussi, pour améliorer la qualité du produit de TPP, l'approche de correction de la puissance du laser avait été tentée. Pendant TPP fabrication, la forme de focalisation laser changé lorsque la surface de la fabrication a été déplacé dans la direction z. Cela se traduit par le fait que nous avons besoin de plus afin d'assurer la taille de voxel est identique à z différent. pour corriger ce défaut, un procédé pour la correction de la puissance du laser et de la formule pour la puissance de correction sont proposées. la formule est dérivé du concept de maintien de conditions d'exposition identiques. / One third of dental emergencies and a high percentage of toothaches are endodontics related. Rotary instruments employed in endodontic treatment may break inside the root canal due to material fatigue. Once broken, extracting the fractured part from the canal is a difficult job and is annoying to both the patient and the dentist. Therefore, warning of an imminent fracture during clinical use or developing good strategies to increase its mechanical properties will be a great help to avoid medical/ legal complications. The research is studied from two parts. The first part established a standard testing platform, simulating several root canal parameters, proposing a series of strategies to improve the fatigue life and material's mechanical properties. Also, a monitoring system employing Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors has been attempted. The reason of using FBG is its small size which is very promising in integrating with the handpiece of the endodontic equipment. In the current work, by picking up and analyzing the stress wave through Fast Fourier Transform (FFT), we can reveal the energy variation and the frequency shifting phenomenon under some characteristic frequencies. It is hoped that with these information, we can avoid/alleviate the occurrence of unexpected fracture. As for the fatigue test, data showed that the fatigue life can be improved when certain heat treatment or reciprocating rotation method applied. Such phenomenon may be closely related to the phase composition in Ni-Ti Alloy and the maximum tension stress is decreased when reciprocating movement applied. Studies showed that the more content of martensite phase in the needle, the more fatigue life can be achieved. However, it may need to take compromise with needle's cutting efficiency. For this issue, we can combine cryogenic treatment and heat treatment to get better fatigue life without compromising with its cutting efficiency. The second part is to fabricate high resolution, large size of new type endodontic needles by employing two-photon polymerization (TTP) technique. The work is done in the university of Joseph-Fourier LiPhy lab, France. Unlike traditional TPP manufacturing, which had a limitation of its products size due to small lase power, repetition rate and piezo driven stage, we use Ormocer resin, 130 kHz, 1W powerful 532 nm laser with step motor driven X-Y stage to fabricate high bio-compatible 800 µm cell scaffold and 1.2 cm height needle. Also, to improve the product quality of TPP, the laser power correction approach had been attempted. During TPP fabrication, the laser focusing shape changed when the fabrication surface was moved up in z direction. This results in that we need more power to ensure the voxel size is the same at different z. To correct such defect, a method of the laser power correction and formula for the correcting power are proposed. The formula is derived from the concept of keeping exposure condition the same.

Biocélulas a combustível (BFCs) são definidas como dispositivos bioeletroquímicos que utilizam componentes biológicos, como enzimas ou microrganismos, para converter energia química em energia elétrica. Neste estudo, reporta-se o desenvolvimento de um bioeletrodo composto por fibras flexíveis de carbono (FFC) modificadas com a enzima álcool desidrogenase (ADH), o qual foi utilizado juntamente com a levedura Saccharomyces cerevisiae , sendo enzima e microrganismos usados como biocatalisadores cooperativos para bioprodução e oxidação de etanol. A glicose é oxidada pelas células de levedura sob condições anaeróbias, e o etanol formado pela fermentação alcóolica é, em seguida, oxidado a acetaldeído pela enzima ADH. A oxidação de etanol pela ADH resulta ainda, na redução da molécula de nicotinamida adenina dinucleotídeo, NAD+ a NADH. Posteriormente, o NADH formado nessa reação é eletroquimicamente oxidado a NAD+ na superfície do bioeletrodo de FFC baseado em ADH (FFC-ADH). Avaliou-se a influência da temperatura e do pH na bioeletrocatálise de etanol pela ADH e a melhor resposta obtida foi em 40 ºC e pH 8,5. Além disso, obteve-se uma excelente correlação linear entre os valores de concentração de etanol e densidade de corrente, indicando que a resposta bioeletrocatalítica da ADH é diretamente proporcional à concentração de etanol produzido a partir da fermentação. O conceito de que microrganismos e enzimas podem trabalhar cooperativamente para produzir uma nova classe de bioeletrodos, foi introduzido nesse trabalho. Por fim, demonstrou-se, que o bioeletrodo cooperativo pode ser aplicado com sucesso em uma BFC, utilizando o biocátodo de difusão de gás contendo a enzima bilirrubina oxidase (BOx) imobilizada em sua superfície. / Biofuel cells (BFCs) are defined as bioelectrochemical devices that use biological components, such as enzymes or microorganisms, to convert chemical energy into electric energy. In this study, we report the development of a bioelectrode composed of flexible carbon fibers (FCF) modified with the enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) together with Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast, being enzyme and microorganisms used as cooperative biocatalysts for bioproduction and oxidation of ethanol. Glucose is oxidized by the yeast cells in anaerobic conditions, and ethanol is produced through alcoholic fermentation and then it is oxidized to acetaldehyde by the ADH enzyme. The ethanol oxidation by ADH also results in the reduction of the nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide molecule, NAD+ to NADH. Subsequently, the NADH produced in this reaction is electrochemically oxidized to NAD+ on the surface of the FCF bioelectrode based on ADH (FCF-ADH). The influence of temperature and pH on the bioelectrocatalysis of ethanol was evaluated and the best performance was found at 40 ºC and pH 8.5. Additionally, the results demonstrated an excellent linear correlation between the ethanol concentration and the current generated, which indicates that the bioelectrocatalytic response of ADH is directly proportional to concentration of ethanol produced from the fermentation. The present study has introduced the concept that microorganisms and enzymes can work cooperatively to produce a new class of bioelectrodes. Finally, it has been demonstrated that the cooperative bioelectrode can be applied successfully to BFC using a gas-diffusion biocathode containing the bilirubin oxidase enzyme (BOx) immobilized on its surface.

A técnica caracterizada pela colagem de polímeros reforçados com fibras de carbono (PRFC) em elementos estruturais de concreto vem sendo aplicada com sucesso no reforço de estruturas em todo o mundo. Resistência à corrosão, elevada resistência à tração, baixo peso, facilidade e rapidez de aplicação, são algumas das características interessantes que têm contribuído para a sua disseminação. Nesta pesquisa propõe-se uma inovação construtiva fundamentada no desenvolvimento de um compósito de alto desempenho à base de cimento Portland e fibras de aço (macro + microfibras), destinado a constituir o que está sendo preliminarmente chamado de substrato de transição. A finalidade desse substrato é a de controlar melhor a fissuração do concreto da viga e retardar ou até evitar o desprendimento prematuro do reforço polimérico. Devido à carência de pesquisas semelhantes a aqui proposta, foi realizado um estudo preliminar em vigotas moldadas com fibras de aço e reforçadas externamente com manta de PRFC, onde se verificou que a concepção do substrato de transição é válida. Partiu-se então para a realização de ensaios visando à obtenção de um compósito cimentício com características apropriadas para constituir o substrato de transição. Os resultados e as análises efetuadas mostram que foi possível desenvolver um material de elevado desempenho, traduzido por um comportamento de pseudo-encruamento, com elevados ganhos de resistência e tenacidade ao fraturamento. A aplicação do reforço com manta sobre a superfície do substrato de transição, formado a partir da reconstituição do banzo tracionado da viga com o compósito cimentício, mostrou melhorar significativamente os níveis de desempenho da peça reforçada. Do estudo realizado foi possível comprovar a eficiência da técnica de reforço proposta, além de reunir uma série de informações que podem ser exploradas para se tornarem úteis como critérios de projeto de estruturas recuperadas e reforçadas. / The technique characterized by bond of the carbon fibers reinforced polymer (CFRP) in structural elements of concrete comes being applied successfully in the strengthening of structures in the whole world. Resistance to the corrosion, high tensile strength, low weight, easiness and rapidity of application, is some of interesting characteristics that have contributed for its dissemination. The objective of this research is to develop an innovate strengthening method for RC beams, based on a high performance cement-based composite of steel fibers (macro + microfibers) to be applied in a transition layer. The purpose of this transition layer is to better control the cracking of concrete and to be late or until avoid the premature detachment of strengthening. Due to lack of similar research here the proposal, was carried through a preliminary study in short beams molded with steel fibers and strengthened with CFRP sheet, where if it verified that the conception of the transition layer is valid. Tests were developed to get a cement-based composite with characteristics to constitute the layer transition. The results shown that were possible to develop a material of high performance with a pseudo strain-hardening behavior, high strength and fracture toughness. The application of the strengthened about the layer transition surface showed significantly to improve the levels of performance of the strengthening beam. Of the carried through study it was possible to prove the efficiency of the new strengthened technique and describe various information that can be explored to become useful as criteria of project of repaired and strengthened structures.

No. of bitstreams: 0 / A reconstrução tridimensional de superfícies de fratura de materiais compósitos do tipo CFRP é apresentada neste trabalho como um método possível para análise fractográfica desse material, cuja superfície de fratura pode apresentar uma rugosidade acentuada, com grande variação em altura. Dois métodos são apresentados para esse propósito: a reconstrução por foco variável, realizada com imagens de microscopia óptica e a reconstrução por paralaxe, realizada com par de imagens estéreo, obtidas por microscopia eletrônica de varredura. Uma avaliação é realizada para cada um dos dois métodos, discutindo seus limites e a eficiência de cada um deles, perante as dificuldades de análise de materiais compósitos unidirecionais e multidirecionais. O método de foco variável apresentou um excelente resultado de reconstrução, mas tem a necessidade de um número grande de imagens, tempo de dedicação do instrumento e limite de ampliação das imagens como fatores a serem considerados na escolha de melhor método. As inclinações da amostra, durante o método da paralaxe, revelam alterações nos histogramas das imagens adquiridas no sentido horário que limitam o uso do método para materiais com alta rugosidade. A obtenção de imagens em um único sentido e a construção de uma região de interesse, posicionada no centro da imagem são sugestões para tornar o método mais abrangente. A linearidade das projeções de características na imagem inclinada também sugere a possibilidade de realizar a reconstrução utilizando, em vez de apenas duas, múltiplas imagens obtidas no sentido anti-horário.
