Automatic Cartoon Generation By Learning The Style Of An Artist

Kuruoglu, Betul 01 September 2012 (has links) (PDF)
In this study, we suggest an algorithm for generating cartoons from face images automatically. The suggested method learns drawing style of an artist and applies this style to the face images in a database to create cartoons. The training data consists of a set of face images and corresponding cartoons, drawn by the same artist. Initially, a set of control points are labeled and indexed to characterize the face in the training data set for both images and corresponding caricatures. Then, their features are extracted to model the style of the artist. Finally, a similarity matrix of real face image set and the input image are constructed. With the help of the similarity matrix, Distance-Weighted Nearest Neighbor algorithm calculates the exaggeration coefficients which caricaturist would have designed for the input image in his mind. In caricature generation phase, Moving Least Squares algorithm is applied to distort the input image based on these coefficients. Caricatures generated by this approach successfully cover most of the caricaturist&rsquo / s key characteristics in his drawing.

The representation of space and cultural memory in Hong Kong independent comics

Huen, Yuk-wan., 禤育昀. January 2012 (has links)
This paper explores the way Hong Kong independent comics encapsulate the essence of the city. Independent comics are distinguished from mainstream comics by their specific mode of production. More significantly they demonstrate an emphasis on subjective personal creativity and craftsmanship, which stands out sharply in the pervasive objective culture in modern society. Adopting an anthropological approach in representing local ways of living, these comics attempt to map an identity of Hong Kong in a way that is free from confusing influences of her postcolonial history, her political subordination to China and the global capitalist forces. The artists of independent comics embrace the essence of local culture by focusing on space and cultural memory and thereby rediscovering the truth and characteristics of life in Hong Kong. As a form of popular cultural text, Hong Kong independent comics package the local identity and history into fashionable goods for cultural consumption. Together with this, the articulation of a shared past creates forces of cohesion that binds the community together and offers a way for the people to negotiate their identity. / published_or_final_version / Literary and Cultural Studies / Master / Master of Arts

Politinių karikatūrų, kaip žodžio laisvės išraiškos, problematika demokratiškoje žiniasklaidoje / Political caricatures as a topic of free speech in democratic media

Pociūtė, Vaiva 05 August 2009 (has links)
[toliau žr. visą tekstą] / The latest local and international conflicts forced to look back to the democratic society’s value – freedom of speech. Satirical imagery of the grotesque body of Louis XIV : pushing the corporeal limits of France

Heinrich, Brittany Nicole. January 2006 (has links)
The establishment of the French Absolutism under King Louis XIV depended in part on pictorial representation generated by the French Academy. As a vehicle and institute of the state, the Academy created a canon of imagery, which was known throughout Europe. This enabled Louis XIV's image to be reversed by the creators of the satirical images. The makers of the reverse image appropriated the institutionalized styles and genres of royal portraiture to create innovative satirical images of the monarch using the very canon Louis XIV sanctioned. In its analysis of a small body of satirical imagery, the thesis draws on various theories about the body of the king proposed by Jean-Marie Apostolides, Ernst Kantorowicz and Louis Marin. A comparison of satirical images with official images of the king demonstrates the successful strategies of satirical imagery and the collective need for these kinds images in the seventeenth century.

Tellebo, Paulina January 2015 (has links)
When is it acceptable to make fun of religion, and when does it become disrespectful? On January 7, 2015, the headquarters of the French satirical news paper Charlie Hebdo was subjected to a terrorist attack that claimed the lives of 12 staff members, due to the publishing of caricatures picturing the prophet Muhammed. The reactions that followed the attack circled around two perspectives; the importance of freedom of expression and the obligation to show respect for certain institutions and traditions in society. How come the caricatures can elicit such completely different reactions? This is the question that this thesis uses as a starting point for the examination of the subject caricatures and satire. The thesis examines caricatures and satire from a rhetorical perspective. It distinguishes four rhetorical aspects of caricature, and discusses if these rhetorical aspects can be what makes the difference regarding how provocative a drawing is considered. The thesis then uses the four rhetorical aspects found, to analyze two caricatures from the French satiric magazine Charlie Hebdo.
