A Carnivalesque Perspective of Graham Swift's Last Orders

Willis, Catherine Jane 07 January 2009 (has links)
Graham Swifts novel Last Orders has yet to be viewed as containing carnivalesque elements as defined by Mikhail Bakhtin in Rabelais and His World. Through the examination of Bakhtins theory of the carnivalesque and through a corresponding close reading of Last Orders, this article details the carnivalesque nature of the locations visited by the characters in the narrative, of the grotesque incidents that occur in these locations, and of the narrative style and structure of the novel itself.

Narrative structure and philosophical debates in Tristram Shandy and Jacques le fataliste

Whiskin, Margaux Elizabeth January 2012 (has links)
The aim of the present thesis is to analyse how the narrative affects the various philosophical debates in Tristram Shandy and Jacques le fataliste. Contrary to what one expects from a philosophical novel, Sterne and Diderot do not impose upon the reader an authorial and authoritative discourse. Dominant discourses are constantly challenged and contradicted. The philosophical debates in both novels remain open and are left without a conclusion. The author's voice is but one amongst many others, and it is the narrative which maintains the dialogue between them by preventing one particular voice from invalidating the others. My argument hinges on Bakhtinian dialogism, which can be defined as the presence of interacting voices and views. In Tristram Shandy and Jacques le fataliste, dialogism occurs through the narrative structure allowing for the confrontation of the contradictory discourses in the philosophical debates, and enabling them to engage in dialogue, instead of establishing the authorial voice as the sole valid discourse in the text. Through those contradictions, the philosophical content takes on a different form, that of a refusal of systematic discourse. No dogmatic view is forced upon the reader. Sterne and Diderot do not offer a solution to the various philosophical questions debated in their novels. However, they do offer a philosophical method whereby the confrontation of contradictory ideas creates a dynamic for the pursuit of truth.

Passeando entre a comicidade, a paródia e o estranhamento : o riso na série O Bairro, de Gonçalo Tavares

Wetmann, Ariadne Leal January 2009 (has links)
This study intends to analyze the various conceptions of humor and laughter involved in the works of the series The Neighborhood of Gonçalo M. Tavares, specifically O Senhor Henri, O Senhor Valéry and O Senhor Kraus. Tavares is the author of the new generation of Portuguese literature that has puzzled the critics for his rich production, his sharp, precise, style and his discussion of themes that seems to go beyond the broad reflection on the Portuguese identity and post-colonialism that guided the last decades for the writers of Portugal. In the cycle of works discussed, the characters, which carry the name of canonical authors and represent something of the spirit of them, of what it's said about them, interact with their "neighbors" and talk about their peculiar worldviews, prompting laughter in the several passages. However, it is a multifaceted laugh, sometimes subtle and full of strangeness. We believe that there are two fundamental attitudes which define two main types of laughter, laugh at and laugh with. The first is the mockery laughter, which was defined more clearly by Vladimir Propp (1992), and the second is the carnivalesque comic, theorized by Mikhail Bakhtin (1987). We find that the mockery laughter is very creatively worked in Kraus and marks the other works sometimes, renewing what Propp named as "comedy of character." Valéry and Henri are imbued mainly by carnivalesque comic, which, in its ambiguity, degrades and regenerates at the same time, giving positive values to laughter, in which everyone is included. This variety of conceptions and targets of laughter becomes possible through the innovative use of the form of parody, understood as repetition with difference (HUTCHEON, 1989) or as a dimension that dialogues with paraphrase, appropriation and stylization (SANT'ANNA, 2006). The conclusion is that the comic expressed by the characters is significant both in terms of a new paradigm for Portuguese literature, which makes more universal the prior themes without forget or disregard them, since it has a unique relevance to the culture and imagery current of the country; as for the scene of the " waste culture", as postulated by Zygmunt Bauman (2005), in which subjects consume more to escape the idea of finitude. We found a dimension of resistance to this culture, to the exclusion and the redundancy by means of the expression of laughter and peculiar passions and mannerisms of the characters, which represent, to some extent, continuity and infinity. We also emphasize that we don't understand continuity as something monolithic, while the potential for diversity and variety that is usually part of laughter remains.

Larsson, Alfred, Lindskog, Anton January 2021 (has links)
The purpose of this bachelor thesis was to examine how traditional news media vis-à- vis alternative news media in Sweden portrayed the Quran burnings and the riots which followed during august in the summer of 2020. With the basis in framing theory and intermedia agenda setting we examined these research questions: How do the news papers frame the Quran burnings? What discourses are reproduced? How do the traditional news papers and the alternative news papers framing of the Quran burnings differ from each other? The qualitative methods used in this bachelor thesis were Robert Entmans framing theory combined with Rens Vliegenthart & Stefaan Walgraves intermedia agenda setting theory. Also, we used different theories regarding populism, clash of civilizations and freedom of speech in order to find various themes in the reporting. For instance, the study applies Mikhail Bakhtin’s theory of the carnivalesque to examine how the alternative news paper Samnytt framed the Quran burnings. Through examining news articles, we discovered several preexisting frames and some additional ones. The results showed that the traditional news papers framed the Quran burnings in a laconic way as an intolerant act against Muslims, while the alternative news papers framed the Quran burnings as a clash of civilizations and simultaneously as an act of freedom of speech. In relation to the alternative news papers overly dramatic and sensationalistic discourse, the traditional news papers discourse was more moderate. In this way the populist discourse in the alternative news media and their focus on the “man on the street” is an example of how the alternative news media defines itself as an opposition to the hegemonic “elite” news media institutions. In the alternative news papers, we also found one specific frame concerning anti-Semitism in Malmö, which was not given the same amount of attention by the traditional news papers. The result of this study shows differences in framing, in line with previous research regarding alternative news media and populism, that could be an example of how the alternative news media is born and defines itself as an alternative to a narrative they deem wrong or lacking in traditional news media. This is primarily an effect of the fact that the traditional news papers lacked diversity in their interviewees since they mostly relied on authority sources, or in one case their own opinion piece writer, to tell the story. The results of this study highlights processes and effects that lies at the core of several phenomenon in this sphere, therefore it should be used to further the research on framing, alternative news media and populism. /
En kvalitativ analys av traditionella kontra alternativa nyhetsmediers gestaltning av koranbränningarna i Malmö 2020.

Teologie a humor v eposu Pamětná tragoedia Augustina Doležala / Theology and humor in the epic poem "Memorial Tragedy" by Augustin Doležal

Sočuvka, Pavol January 2017 (has links)
This master thesis is concerned with biblical epic poem (or "epos") by Slovak author Augustin Dolezal, called Memorial Tragedy (1791, originally in Czech language). In this type of genre author takes well known biblical stories, such as fall of man or murder of Abel and adds his own fabricated circumstances. In this particular case author is trying to provide reader with catechesis and religious education on top the tale. Tragedy is mainly focused on the nature of sin and its connection to human condition, fall of man and possibility of evil in the world. Method of this paper is mainly theme analysis and comparison with Bible and its well known exegesis throughout the history. It is focused on comicality, which shall be defined in the theoretical part. Practical part attempts to come up with interpretation of the text in such a way, that certain themes, tropes or figures from the literary text are interconnected with certain features of comicality and shown as such. Modely komického v Haškově románu "Švejk" v porovnání s vrcholnými satirickými díly bulharské, ruské a srbské beletrie / Models of the comic in Hašek's novel "Švejk" compared with the top satirical works of the Bulgarian, Russian and Serbian fiction

Dichev, Bogdan January 2012 (has links)
Keywords: literary comic, comic model, theory of carnivalesque, theory of the play, imagination, incongruity The dissertation pursues three main goals: to define the differentiating features of specific comic models (goal A - the differentiation goal); to introduce the principles of the comic in "Švejk", and its polyphony and originality, the technical devices, which shape it, and the semantic procedures of its creation (goal B - the analysis goal); to prove that between Hašek's "Švejk" and the other four works of Bulgarian, Russian and Serbian satirical prose ("Bay Ganyo", "The Twelve Chairs", "The Little Golden Calf" and "Autobiography") there is a stable common basis (a comic model), which is specified in each of those works (goal C - the juxtaposition goal). The conceptual approach in the methodology of the exploration is based on the conviction that the core of the fictional magic in Hašek's "Švejk" is precisely the comic. The methodological approach of the hierarchical systematization wields all known qualifications of the comic in the models displayed here, which have the nature of unifying classification frames. The methodology of the choice and application of the conceptual instruments is based on the taxonomy of the famous Czech cultural critic Vladimír Borecký, whose terminological...

The Subjection of Authority and Death Through Humor: Carnivalesque, Incongruity, and Absurdism in Cormac McCarthy's Blood Meridian and No Country for Old Men

Covington, Ruth Ellen 12 June 2014 (has links) (PDF)
Cormac McCarthy's representation of the comic theories of the carnivalesque, incongruity, and absurdism by the antagonists of Blood Meridian and No Country for Old Men demonstrates the unique and ostensible power of humor over (or at least, its awareness of and reconciliation to the absurdity of) death; it also emphasizes the supreme power and influence of humor as a means for destroying other institutions and philosophies which claim knowledge or authority but fail to sustain individuals in times of crisis. This makes humor a formidable factor in determining and justifying the outcome of human interactions and in defining the strengths and limitations of McCarthy's antagonists.
