Die Kaapse meubelmakers, 1652-1900

Geldenhuys, Hugo Amos 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 1986.

For this we propose the implementation of three Scenarios For Research (Skovsmose, 2008) by which carpenters feel invited to ask questions and to seek explanations within their sociocultural context. The methodological approaches used follow a qualitative research approach, with the use of techniques and procedures coming from ethnography, such as: observation, semi-structured interviews, field diary, photos and footage. Accordingly, we seek the critical-reflective deepening of different ways to understand and deal with the world mathematically, ie, knowing and doing mathematics from different social groups and that manifest themselves in non-academic and non-academic environments. This analysis emerge three categories: the first emphasizes the "do together" and "learning with others" a level of understanding beyond the practical and efficient collective work; the second category reflects the appreciation of knowledge through the oppression of the dominant power, and the third category in the dialogical process never finished, far from being tedious. New perspectives emerge from reflections that flow to a level of understanding of another reality under a critical eye, permeated of impartiality, which is intended to write another story people marked by exclusion and marginalization.

Methods of knowledge transfer : a case study of small and medium-sized handicraft businesses in Germany

Leopold, Stefanie Johanna 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2008. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The study is divided into two major parts: a theoretical research of two knowledge transferring methods headed by a discussion on knowledge and learning, and a case study analysing the presence of mentoring within traditional apprenticeships at carpenter workshops in Germany. The two methods on knowledge transfer are mentoring and the cognitive apprenticeship model, whereas each of the models is discussed in terms of the individual characteristics present and techniques used within the relationship of the parties present. In the past, both methods have been established in modern business organisations to enhance knowledge creation, transfer and archiving though many approaches have failed due to mistakes in the basic conceptual interpretation or lack of support. The question, which underlined this research project, focused on whether positive aspects of the methods or the methods themselves have already been incorporated in the organisational culture of small to medium sized enterprises. Thus, the research explored whether knowledge transferral methods, and particularly mentoring, is apparent within the organisational structure of small to medium sized enterprises and in Germany and whether the size of the company has an influence on the presence of mentoring aspects in the businesses. With particular focus on mentoring, the research has shown that no aspects relating to mentoring have been incorporated. Even though some answers pointed to a correlation in between business size and the incorporation of aspects, no real correlation could be proven.

“Rampant Signs and Symbols”: Artifacts of Language in J.D. Salinger’s “For Esmé—With Love and Squalor” and Glass Family Stories

Sviatko, Courtney 01 January 2014 (has links)
This thesis explores the use of language in J.D. Salinger’s “For Esmé—With Love and Squalor,” “A Perfect Day for Bananafish,” and Raise High the Roofbeam, Carpenters. It establishes a narrative pattern in which sensitive individuals such as Seymour Glass and Sergeant X are isolated by the insensitivity of the superficial modern world, attempt to communicate their concerns to others through an exchange of language in material forms, and ultimately find relief in silence. By analyzing various examples of linguistic artifacts and the impact they have on both sender and receiver, this thesis identifies criteria for successful communication as well as reasons for the failure of language which may be useful for the study of these and other works by Salinger. This thesis also considers the intersection of binaries such as silence and noise, and the ways Salinger presents them both thematically and formally.

Les plafonds peints de Metz (XIIIe-XVe siècles) / The decoration of urban houses of the elite at the end of the Middle Ages. The painted ceilings of Metz (13th-15th centuries)

Pascarel, Nathalie 01 December 2018 (has links)
The city of Metz in France holds an exceptional collection of medieval painted ceilings made between the 13th and 15th centuries. Despite being destroyed, incomplete, missing or still unknown, twenty-seven ceilings were the subject of this research. Their study allowed to follow the artistic evolution and to apprehend the styles of Messinian civil interior decorations, without interruption during two centuries. These unknown ceilings are a priceless source of information for the knowledge of the historical and artistic heritage of the city at the end of the Middle Ages. Indeed, they are the testimony of a know-how of the carpenters, the painters and the active workshops in Metz, but also of the wealth of the patrician houses and the art of living of the members of the urban elite. Research around these decorations allows us to immerse in the heart of a European artistic production of the last centuries of the Middle Ages with the use of iconographic themes of great diversity (plant ornamentation, bestiaries, holy figures, tournaments of jousting, Arms). This study follows a multidisciplinary approach intended to display the scientific, material, historical, heraldic, iconographic and stylistic realities of the painted ceilings, in order to detect, among others, what could be the purpose of these sets and the messages that the landlords, of a high social status, wished to convey to their guests. These luxurious ornamentations are undeniably linked to their financial ease, their knowledge of medieval literature, the local artistic environment and the major diplomatic events they were faced with

Cherfem, Carolina Orquiza 27 February 2009 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-06-02T19:39:01Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 2343.pdf: 2036118 bytes, checksum: 79dc543a6c1eefd5bd58d9161a4db72e (MD5) Previous issue date: 2009-02-27 / Financiadora de Estudos e Projetos / The Present research aimed to investigate the developing process of a self sustained community carpenter s workshop called Madeirarte, from Pirituba II settlement, located in Itapeva / SP. Madeirarte began from a community housing project done in the settlement, where the carpenter s workshop was built in order to make the housing parts and materials. This workshop was led by a group of four agriculturist women aged over forty-five years-old. These women began the community venture assuming that it could provide jobs and profits. In this context, the general concepts in this paper correlated to gender relations on the perspective of a dialogic feminism and the mutual economy in the self sustainable perspective. The first is due to the specificity of the job of women who work in carpentry, which is historically related to a concept of men s job, in the midst of a society where we observe the uneven relation between men and women and also among women themselves. The second is attributed to the context of a undertaking based on the mutual economy. Such economy corresponds to a quest of alternative ways to develop a productive processes that embraces solidariety, being able to connect the business activity to the real possibility of improving their quality of life, hence opposing the predominant capitalist ideology. Thus, this investigation aimed to reflect and dialog about the settlement process of Madeirarte by focusing on the gender relations and identifying the components of transformation and the components that come as obstacles, in order to find ways to improve the everyday life in their carpenter s workshop routine. For that, this paper established the concept of Dialogical Learning as a theoretical-ethodological basis, according to the guidelines of Habermas (1987), about the communicative action and, in the concept of dialogicity, developed by Paulo Freire (1994, 2005), by conceiving persons as essential subjects of a dialog, besides that they are engaged in the social context hence they are able to change it. The methodology used was the critical communicative approach, based on changing perspectives evidenced by the intersubjectivity and reflection as well as the importance of dialog in the knowledge building, which implies explicitness in the interpretation of the research subjects themselves. Thus, from the spaces of dialog established during the research, followed by the data collection structured by the analysis of the field diaries, interviews, participatory observation and communicative groups, the achieved results allowed us to interpret the reality experienced by the women carpenters in their everyday activities, connecting the work possibilities to the personal changes achieved around the settlement as well. The results also let identify the changing elements present at Madeirarte, by disclosing many acquired abilities and educational process built by women on the self sustained job. The research also identified the elements that appears as obstacles in this activity and pointing the possibilities to overcome. Finally, we seek to contribute with other settlement process and contribute through the women s best practices involved in community undertakings, such women who became roler models in their own lives, showing that it is necessary to expose the exclusion process that we live in but also to make known the possibilities of historical changes.
