Ditzen, Thomas 17 June 2019 (has links)
The aim of this study was to evaluate the reliability of different bony landmarks on radiographs after implantation of a total shoulder arthroplasty when the scapula is tilted compared with the ideal ap view. To assess loosening of the glenoid component, serial evaluation of ap radiographs of the scapula has been established as the 'gold standard. This study also verified the incidence of radiolucent lines (RLL) in radiographs and on CTscans to show different measurements of localization and appearance of the RLL. For the first aim of this study glenoid components were implanted into 6 human cadaveric scapulae. Radiographs were taken exactly anterior-posterior in the frontal plane, as well as craniocaudal tilted (±15° and ±30°) and mediolateral tilted (±10° and ±20°). The following landmarks were evaluated: lateral margin of the scapula, medial margin of the scapula, floor of the fossa supraspinatus line, spine of the scapula line, glenoid fossa line, and coracoid base line. In the second part of this study, 10 glenoid components were implanted into human cadaveric glenoids and a CT-scan as well as radiographs were made in an exact anteriorposterior view. The images were compared to evaluate the localization, incidence and form of the RLL. Every X-ray was measured by two different examiners to show the interobserver reliability. Regarding robustness against glenoid tilt, the medial margin of the scapula had the best intraobserver and interobserver reliability, whereas the lateral margin of the scapula had an acceptable intraobserver and interobserver reliability. In measuring medial migration, the glenoid fossa line had a significantly lower intraobserver and interobserver reliability than the coracoid base line. Because conventional radiographs were hardly done in exact ap direction despite the laboratory within, RLL were seen on X-ray although no RLL actually existed. The CT-scans highlighted the existence of artefacts, which looked like RLL on conventional radiography. The curved form of the glenoid component can cause double lines, which look like RLL on X-rays. However, the conventional radiography can still be used to detect an increase of RLL in postoperativ control X-rays. To be absolutely sure whether RLL do exist a CT-scan has to be done. This study shows that, even under best conditions for an implantation of glenoid components RLL can be viewed due to false cementation technique. The results underline that the cement implantation can still be improved to minimize the incidence of RLL.

Effect of carbon activity on microstructure evolution in WC-Ni cemented carbides

Danielsson, Olivia January 2018 (has links)
The aim of this work was to systematically study how the microstructure evolution is affected by the carbon activity in WC-Ni cemented carbides. Seven WC-9.59at%Ni alloys with different carbon activity were sintered at 1500 °C. From investigating these alloys, the carbon window has been experimentally evaluated using light optical microscopy and compared to theoretical carbon window calculated using Thermo-Calc. The overall microstructure of cross sections and raw surfaces have been investigated using scanning electron microscopy. Finally, the WC grain size and distribution have been evaluated using electron backscatter diffraction. It was found that the experimental carbon window was slightly wider than the theoretical carbon window. The WC grain size increased and the grain size distribution got wider with increasing carbon activity. In addition, the largest WC grains showed the largest grain growth by increasing carbon activity. By comparing the present results of grain size and distribution of WC-Ni to previous results of WC-Co, it was found that the WC grain growth was more pronounced and more influenced by the carbon activity.

Strength of Nano-Cemented Paste Backfill Cured in Iso- and Non-Isothermal Conditions

Benkirane, Othmane 20 January 2023 (has links)
One hundred billion tons of mine solid waste are estimated to be produced worldwide each year. In Canada, the mining and oil industries produce the most solid and semi-solid waste in the country, with more than a billion tons each year. In the earlier days of mining, the initial practices that were used to contain these waste materials consisted of surface storage, river dumping or just simple abandonment, while the more recent practices include dam impoundment and underground waste fill. These methods however can potentially cause environmental hazards and geotechnical problems. Against this context and as a result of stricter environmental regulations, cemented paste backfilling has been developed as a solution. This relatively new technology uses the produced waste tailings to backfill the mine stopes, greatly reducing their environmental impact while offering proper structural support in an efficient manner. However, the cost of cemented paste backfill (CPB) is greatly impacted by the binder content which can constitute up to 75% of its total cost. Additionally, the binder is usually mostly composed of ordinary Portland cement, and its production is highly energy-intensive and generates a large volume of carbon dioxide (CO₂). Indeed, it is estimated that the cement industry accounts for approximately 7% of the global anthropogenic CO₂ emissions, which is expected to increase on an annual basis. All of these factors have compelled the mining industry to seek alternatives for cement to enhance CPB strength, in hopes of reducing its carbon footprint. Against this context, this study investigates the effect of the addition of nanoparticles, namely nano silica (SiO₂) and nano-calcium carbonate (CaCO₃), on the strength development of CPB cured at a constant room temperature and in non-isothermal conditions. Nanoparticles have been studied and used as chemical admixtures in different cementitious materials with promising results; non-isothermal curing conditions better reflect the in-situ thermal curing conditions of CPB. Thus, numerous different laboratory tests and analyses, including uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) tests, thermogravimetric/derivative thermogravimetric (TG/DTG) analyses and electrical conductivity monitoring, have been conducted on CPB samples with or without nanoparticles, and cured at room temperatures or under non-isothermal conditions. The non-isothermal conditions replicate the development of temperature in two different sizes of CPB structures in the field. The results show that CPB that contains nanoparticles show a higher UCS over the entire period of curing in all of the tested conditions. The mechanical performance is further enhanced when tested under higher temperatures in non-isothermal temperature profiles. Most of the strength increase takes place at the early ages (3 days) of the testing. The reason for the improvement in the mechanical strength is linked to accelerated binder hydration and the nucleating and filler effects of the nano-material, which is corroborated by results obtained through microstructural analyses and EC monitoring. The use of natural gold tailings affects the mechanical performance of CPB and the accelerating effect of the nanoparticles due to sulphate attacks. Overall, these promising findings can help to contribute to reducing the carbon footprint of mining activities, and improve the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of mine backfilling processes.

The Effect of Alternative Tungsten Carbide Grain Size Distribution on Microstructure and Mechanical Properties in Cemented Carbides

Ivarsson, Filip January 2022 (has links)
In the constant pursuit of better-performing cemented carbides, recent studies suggest that a combination of better hardness and toughness can be obtained by changing its WC grain size distribution. As the area is still rather unexplored, this thesis aims to broaden the knowledge and answer whether mechanical properties can be changed by changing the WC grain size distribution, in the context of mining drill bit inserts. This was performed by producing four dual grained material as well as four single grained reference materials, for which the carbon content and presence of alloying element were varied. The materials were characterised and compared with regard to magnetic saturation, magnetic coercivity, hardness, fracture toughness, wear resistance, energy needed to cause fracture, as well as detailed microstructural analysis obtained through imaging and electron backscatter diffraction analysis The results showed that mining drill bit inserts with alternative WC grain size distribution could successfully be produced, but that a traditional bimodal distribution with two peaks could not be obtained. The distribution instead became significantly wider as well as skewed towards larger grains for the dual grained materials compared with their references. It was further also confirmed that the alternative dual grain size distribution could be used to improve the mechanical properties of fracture toughness and wear resistance, but only for material that was not alloyed, and the magnitude of the improvement may be considered to be small. For the alloyed materials, it turned out to be more difficult to influence the mechanical properties, as the improving effect of analloying element outweighed the effect of grain size distribution.

Wear on Alumina Coated Tools and the Influence of Inclusions when Turning Low-Alloy Steels : Master Thesis - Chemical Engineering

Öhman, Sebastian January 2016 (has links)
In this master thesis, performed at Sandvik Coromant Västberga (Stockholm), a comprehensive study has been made to investigate the wear on textured alumina (Inveio™) coated cutting tools when turning low-alloy steels. Specifically, wear studies have been made on tools’ rake faces when turning two separate batches of SS2541, after an initial turning time of 4 min. A particular focus has been given to elucidate what particular role the inclusions might have for the wear of the alumina coating onthe tools. Evaluation of tool wear has been made by employing several different analytical techniques, such as LOM, SEM, Wyko, Auger-spectrometry (AES), EPMA and XRD. The results shows that the arisen wear marks on both tested tool types may be divided into three separate and highly distinguishable wear zones, denoted here in thiswork as “wear bands”. Largest amount of wear tended to occur initially at the topmost part of the 3rd wear band. This was true for both tested tool types. This area demonstrated a characteristic 'lamellar' wear pattern, composed of narrow andstructured ridges. All the tools tested demonstrated the adhesion of workpiece materials of various composition that formed into smeared layers in these formed ridges. Depth-profiling Auger-spectrometry revealed that a significant amount of calcium was present in the machined alumina coating layers. This suggests that a reaction between the calcium-containing inclusions found in the steel and the aluminacoating layer had occurred during the performed turning tests. These results arecontradictory to the general belief that alumina is chemical inert during machiningand has previously, to the authors knowledge, not yet been published. Based on the results from this thesis and from a literature review concerning thebehavior of α-alumina during deformation, a new theoretical wear model has been developed. In this model, it is emphasised that the sliding of hard inclusions from the steel may activate pyramidal slip systems in the textured alumina coating. This causes a nano-crystallisation and/or amorphisation in the topmost part of the coating, which facilitates the further wear of these coated tools.

Aqueous Processing of WC-Co Powders

Andersson, Karin M. January 2004 (has links)
The object of this work is to obtain a fundamentalunderstanding of the principal issues concerning the handlingof an aqueous WC-Co powder suspension. The WO3 surface layer on the oxidised tungsten carbidepowder dissolves at pH>3 with the tungsten concentrationincreasing linearly with time. Adding cobalt powder to thetungsten carbide suspension resulted in a significant reductionof the dissolution rate at pH<10. Electrokinetic studiesindicated that the reduced dissolution rate may be related tothe formation of surface complexes; the experiments showed thatCo species in solution adsorb on the oxidised tungsten carbidepowder. The surface forces of oxidised tungsten and cobalt surfaceswere investigated using the atomic force microscope (AFM)colloidal probe technique. The interactions at various ionicstrengths and pH values are well described by DLVO theory. Theadsorption of cobalt ions to tungsten oxide surfaces resultedin an additional non-DLVO force and a reduced absolute value ofthe surface potential. It was shown that the adsorption ofpoly(ethylene imine) (PEI) to the WO3 surfaces induces anelectrosteric repulsion. The properties of spray-dried WC-Co granules were related tothe WC primary particle size, and the poly(ethylene glycol)(PEG) binder and PEI dispersant content in aqueous WC-Cosuspensions. The granule characterisation includes a new methodfor measuring the density of single granules. The increase inthe fracture strength of granules produced from suspensionsthat were stabilised with PEI was related to a more densepacking of the WC-Co particles. The AFM was used to study the friction and adhesion ofsingle spray-dried WC-Co granules containing various amounts ofPEG binder. The adhesion and friction force between two singlegranules (intergranular friction) and between a granule and ahard metal substrate (die-wall friction) have been determinedas a function of relative humidity. The granule-wall frictionincreases with binder content and relative humidity, whereasthe granule-granule friction is essentially independent of therelative humidity and substantially lower than the granule-wallfriction at all PEG contents. Long-term success is related to the position and orientation of the acetabular and femoral components. Traditional preoperative planning entails radiographic analysis of the pelvis, in which a template is placed on the image, allowing an analysis of the appropriate size of the Exeter cemented prosthesis. Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of traditional preoperative planning with the use of templating. Patients and Method: Forty-three anteroposterior X-rays were analyzed by three experienced surgeons. The evaluation of each surgeon was compared with the actual prosthesis used in the surgery and also compared with the assessment of the other two surgeons. Cohen's Kappa concordance test and weighted Kappa indexes using quadratic weighting were used for statistical analysis with a confidence interval of 95%. Results: The preoperative evaluations of Surgeons A, B and C were divided into the analysis of the sizes of the acetabular cup, stem and plug of the distal femoral canal. Surgeon A obtained a moderate agreement in relation to the acetabular component and substantial agreements in relation to the stem and plug. Surgeon B had moderate agreement in relation to both the acetabulum and the stem and substantial agreement in relation to the plug. Surgeon C obtained moderate agreement in relation to the analysis of the acetabulum and the plug and substantial agreement for the stem. Experimental Study on the Engineering Properties of Gelfill

Abdul-Hussain, Najlaa 29 March 2011 (has links)
Gelfill (GF) is made of tailings, water, binder and chemical additives (Fillset, sodium silicate gel). The components of GF are combined and mixed on the surface and transported (by gravity and/or pumping) to the underground mine workings, where the GF can be used for both underground mine support and tailings storage. Thermal (T), hydraulic (H), and mechanical (M) properties are important performance criteria of GF. The understanding of these engineering properties and their evolution with time are still limited due to the fact that GF is a new cemented backfill material. In this thesis, the evolution of the thermal, hydraulic, mechanical, and microstructural properties of small GF samples are determined. Various binder contents of Portland cement type I (PCI) are used. The GF is cured for 3, 7, 28, 90, and 120 days. It is found that the thermal, hydraulic and mechanical properties are time-dependent or affected by the degree of binder hydration index. Furthermore, a relationship is found between the compressive strength and the saturated hydraulic conductivity of the GF samples. The unsaturated hydraulic properties of GF samples have also been investigated. The outcomes show that unsaturated hydraulic conductivity is influenced by the degree of binder hydration index and binder content, especially at low suction ranges. Simple functions are proposed to predict the evolution of air-entry values (AEVs), residual water content, and fitting parameters from the van Genuchten model with the degree of hydration index (α). Furthermore, two columns are built to simulate the coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) behaviour of GF under drained and undrained conditions. The obtained results from the GF columns are compared with the small samples. It is observed that the mechanical properties, hydraulic properties (suction and water content), and temperature development are strongly coupled. The magnitude of these THM coupling factors is affected by the size of the GF. The findings also show that the mechanical, hydraulic and thermal properties of the GF columns are different from samples cured in plastic moulds.
