Institutional commitments, integration and student persistence in the NCV Safety in Society at a TVET College in the Western Cape

Magister Educationis (Adult Learning and Global Change) - MEd(AL) / Student dropout, certification and retention rate has played a pivotal role for academic institutions globally. There are various factors that affect student persistence which inevitably leads to a student’s failure to graduate. These factors may also result in voluntary withdrawal from institutions which could impact on the status and funding of tertiary institutions. To deal with such critical issues, there is a need to understand the reasons for the decline in student retention and the factors that influence goals and student departure. The aim of the current study was to explore the factors that may or may not contribute to persistence, which eventually has an influence on the retention rate. In the current qualitative study, Tinto’s longitudinal model was comprehensively explored. Therefore, the current study was located within Tinto’s longitudinal model of student departure. The researcher was prompted to explore the factors that influence student goals, institutional commitments, social and academic integration and persistence. The South African government expected that the role of the TVET colleges would become the cornerstone of the skills development landscape. According to the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET, 2013b), it was estimated that the growth in the sector would escalate as follows: the projection of 345 000 students in 2010, 630 000 students in 2013. The total projection for 2030 was that 2.5 million students would be certified (DHET, 2013b). Unfortunately, the 2030 projection has been adversely affected by the poorly performing institution and the high dropout rate. (DHET, 2013b) Therefore, the setting for the research was a Technical Vocational College in Cape Town which offers the National Certificate Vocational NCV. The single institutional study linking academic integration, goal influencers, institutional commitments social and academic integration and persistence was based in a college in Cape Town. Thus the study has an overarching research question and three sub-questions. The college was selected conveniently and the researcher purposively selected the participants. A total of twenty participants (20) were interviewed after providing assent and consent. The qualitative design utilized in the current study allowed the researcher to identify themes. Therefore, thematic analysis was employed in the data analysis section. The researcher is currently an insider in this sector. The unique experience and academic background of the researcher has afforded the opportunity to ethically gain access to past results in the TVET, specifically, in a NCV programme at a Cape Town College.

Environmentálně vyspělá budova - pro sportovní aktivity / Environmentally advanced building - for sports activities

The task of the master project is to design a building for sports activities in Sehradice, Zlín region. First the documentation was elaborated, the second part HVAC was designed and the last part focussed on daylighting. The building has one floor and flat green roof. The building includes a fitness, a yoga room, a relax room, two saunas, changing rooms and staff room. The superstructure is designed using Heluz ceramic block walls and Spiroll panel floor structure. Façade is insulated with ETICS. HVAC is provided by two gas boilers, two mechanical ventilation units (indoors) and a cooling unit (outdoor). Domestic hot water is provided by the gas boiler and solar panels. The building uses LED lights. Electricity consumption is partially covered by photovoltaics on the roof. The building plot also includes a large carpark in front of the building. The designs were elaborated in Revit, AutoCAD and energy assessment in Deksoft software.

Environmentální řešení objektu domu s kavárnou v Zaječí / Environmental solution of a house with a café in Zaječí

In my master's project I design a nearly zero energy consumption house with a café in Zaječí. The 1ST part of this project deals with a structural part of the building, which has two above-ground floors and basement. On the basement are storerooms and rooms for technical equipment, on the ground floor is café and living room with kitchen, and on the second floor are bedrooms, bathrooms and cloakrooms. Footings are from cast-in-place concrete, the load bearing walls on basement are from formwork blocks with cast-in-place concrete, on above-ground floors are from ceramic blocks and every non-load bearing walls are also from ceramic blocks. On whole floor are reinforced concrete floor slab and flat green roof. The 2ND part deals with technical equipment of the building. There are gas boiler, floor heating, air conditioning, mechanical ventilation (HVAC), photovoltaics panels with energy storage, retention tank, external blinds and biodynamic lighting. The 3RD part compares several options for using solar energy in combination with different heat sources in terms of energy and economic efficiency of the building.

This dissertation thesis attends to problems of electronic registry for VUT. It deals with the principal of electronic registry functioning, electronic signature and it compares offer of the commercial registries. It goes in for the proposal and implementation of the electronic registry for VUT. Since the using of the e- registry on all public service Office was legalized the people can avoid long queues and the employees are avoided from the stress before dead lines. By the communication through the electronic registry is very important the electronical signature. It is almost a full-valued and lawful alternative to the physical signature. For its safety and utility this system employes asymmetric codes and hash algorithm. Presently in many states, where the electronical signature is legalized it is used together with standard X 509 which defines the format of certificates, organization and action of certification authorities. The certification autority ensures safe connection of the person and general key for using of the electronical signature.

Energy efficiency in glass buildings : A study about the energy efficiency of glass buildings in Stockholm and how related demands are met

The building and property sector stands for one third of the final energy usage in Sweden and this should be diminished, in order to reach goals within environmental sustainability. Glass is a poor thermal insulator but nevertheless a popular choice of material when constructing new buildings. The contradiction between need of energy efficiency and the wish for “glass buildings” led to the subject of this report. This Bachelor’s thesis examines how demands on energy efficiency is met in nine glass buildings in Stockholm. Glass buildings and the current legislation is discussed from a perspective of environmental sustainability. This was done by investigating the demands stated by Boverket from a historical perspective, executing quantitative measurements of heat transfer on elected objects, and interviewing stakeholders linked to the buildings and the Swedish legislation. The study shows that the construction of glass buildings has been possible due to a restructuring of the demands on energy efficiency and technical development. It was found, in most cases, that the shares of glass were in fact lower than apparent. A larger share of glass in the building envelope required creative measures to achieve energy solutions, within legislative demands. Nevertheless, the inlet of solar radiation heat is the greatest challenge. Despite the challenges, the desire for glass is rooted in well-being and aesthetic values, which insinuate that glass buildings will be included in the cityscape henceforth. The conclusions drawn from these results are that the energy performance of glass buildings is still weaker than conventional “solid wall buildings”. Enhancement regarding insulation abilities and improvements of excluding solar radiation must be realized to strengthen the environmental sustainability of this category of buildings. / Bygg- och fastighetssektorn står för en tredjedel av den slutliga energianvändningen i Sverige, vilken måste minimeras för att nå miljömässiga hållbarhetsmål. Att bygga i glas är populärt bland moderna byggnader, trots att glas har relativt låg termisk isolationsförmåga. Motsättningen mellan behovet av energieffektivitet och efterfrågan på “glashus” skapade ämnet för denna rapport. Detta kandidatexamensarbete utforskar hur energieffektivitetskrav möts i nio olika glasbyggnader i Stockholm. Glashus och nuvarande lagstiftning diskuteras ur ett miljömässigt hållbarhetsperspektiv. Detta gjordes genom undersökningar av Boverkets krav ur ett historiskt perspektiv, kvantitativa mätningar av värmeflöden, samt intervjuer med aktörer kopplade till byggnaderna och svensk bygglagstiftning. Studien visar att byggnation av glashus har blivit möjlig på grund av en omstrukturering av energieffektivitetskraven samt teknisk utveckling. Det visade sig att andelen glas i de undersökta byggnaderna oftast var lägre än det såg ut. Större andel glas i klimatskalet krävde kreativa åtgärder för att uppnå energilösningar inom lagstiftningen. Det visade sig också att solinstrålning var den största energiutmaningen för glasbyggnaderna. Trots utmaningarna finns värden anknutna till estetik och välmående som skapar en efterfrågan på glashus, och detta leder till att glashus fortfarande kommer inkluderas i stadsmiljön framöver. En slutsats från arbetet är att energiprestandan i glasbyggnader är svagare än för konventionella “tätväggsbyggnader”. Förbättringar av glaskonstruktionen gällande isolationsförmåga och utestängning av värme från solinstrålning måste realiseras för att stärka den miljömässiga hållbarheten för denna byggnadskategori.

Understanding adult education: Case-studies of three University-based adult education certificate programmes.

Philosophiae Doctor - PhD / By the mid 1980s the Nationalist Party had sought to salvage almost four decades of apartheid policies that were based on white supremacy. In this regard it engaged in dual strategies of repression and reform. The state's strategies were challenged by organisations and movements within civil society. In this regard a number of community-based organisation mushroomed both nationally and regionally. These organisations were co-ordinated by adult political activists most of whom were perceived to lack the necessary skills to manage organisation more effectively. In this conjuncture, the Adult Education Departments at five South African universities developed certificate-level programmes to address this gap. This study focuses on three such programmes, the Community Adult Education Programme, based at the University of Cape Town, the Certificate for Educators of Adults at the University of the Western Cape, and the Community Adult Educators Training Course based at the University of Natal- Pietermaritzburg. This study investigates the social and political conditions that gave rise to the three certificate programmes. It also investigates the relationship between the external social and political conditions and the internal curriculum practices of the certificates. In this process it analyses the nature of the relationship and identifies shifts in the programmes and the curriculum practices between 1986 and 1996. The study uses a qualitative approach and draws on elements of critical theory and social constructionism to understand the data gleaned from interviews and documents. This study argues that all three certificate programmes have directly been tied into the social political context in South Africa between 1986 and 1996. In this decade the study argues, there are three distinct political periods, namely repression/reform, negotiations and fragile democracy. It argues that distinct features from each period have shaped the certificates in different ways. Along with the national political conditions as manifest at the level of the state, the private sector and civil society there are local and institutional dynamics that contribute to the different forms assumed by these certificates. The study further argues that the external social - political conditions from each period have demarcated and fixed the boundaries for the certificates as a social practice. In this process the curriculum practices for each period permitted certain words and practices in preference to others. Consequently, it argues that the external and internal social and political dimensions together construct the certificates as a discourse. This study is based on a belief that the role of a certificate practitioner is to creatively locate the day to day practices within different theoretical frameworks in order to advance studies into sites of adult education practices. This study represents a step in such a direction.

Detta examensarbete gjordes i samarbete med Riksbyggen där träffsäkerheten hos energiberäkningar i Miljöbyggnad studerades. Beräkningarna för den kommande energianvändningen jämfördes med mätningarna när byggnaden är i bruk. Vi ställde oss frågan om betygen i Miljöbyggnad påverkades av en avvikande energianvändning.Syftet med studien var att ge en bredare kunskap om miljöcertifierade byggnaders verkliga och förväntade energianvändning. Detta gjordes genom att identifiera och statistiskt säkerställa differenser mellan beräknad och uppmätt uppvärmnings-, varmvattens- och fastighetsenergi. Metoden som användes var en kartläggning av sekundärdata ur dokumentation från certifieringsprocessen för 116 stycken byggnader. Avvikande indikatorbetygs påverkan på områdes- och byggnadsbetyget i Miljöbyggnad undersöktes.Studien visade att det är svårt att beräkna - hälften av objekten hade en differens på mer än 10% och den årliga energianvändningen ökade i genomsnitt med 3,7 kWh/m2. Störst avvikelse hade uppvärmningsenergin med 9,7 kWh/m2, med sänkta indikatorbetyg till följd. En fjärdedel av dessa hade en vanskligt liten marginal till betygsgränsen.38% av flerbostadshusen hade ett förändrat betyg hos indikatorn för energianvändning, varav 4% fick ett bättre betyg medan 34% fick ett sämre betyg. En tredjedel av de med försämrade betyg fick sänkta områdesbetyg för energi, men behöll trots det byggnadsbetyget i Miljöbyggnad. Lagstiftande krav på minskad energianvändning fick delvis önskad effekt, samtidigt som differensen mellan beräkning och mätning ökade. Revideringar av indikatorbetyg tyder på att installationssystemen för ventilation och uppvärmningsenergin inte var korrekt intrimmade och behöver följas upp. I vilken omfattning man avsiktligt eller oavsiktligt frångått de ursprungliga planerna under byggprocessen lämnas till mer djupgående studier att ta reda på. / This thesis was created with collaboration from Riksbyggen where the accuracy of energy calculations in Miljöbyggnad were studied. Calculations for the upcoming energy use was compared with measurements of the energy of the building when in use. We asked ourselves whether the grades in Miljöbyggnad were affected by a deviating energy use.The purpose of this thesis was to provide a wider knowledge of the actual and expected energy use of buildings with an environmental certificate. This was achieved by identifying and statistically ensuring differences between calculated and measured energy of heating, hot water and real estate use. The method used was a survey of secondary data from the documentation of the process of certification of 116 buildings. The impact of a deviating indicator rating on the field and building rating in Miljöbyggnad was investigated.The study showed that it is difficult to calculate – half of the buildings had a difference of more than 10% and the annual energy use increased by an average of 3,7 kWh/m2.The most significant deviation was the energy used for heating with 9,7 kWh/m2, with decreasing indicator ratings as a result. A quarter of these had a precariously small margin to the limit of the rating level.38% of the residential buildings had a changed rating of the indicator of energy use, whereof 4% got a higher rating and 34% got a lower rating. A third of the ones with lower ratings also got decreased ratings in the field of “Energi”, but nevertheless retained their overall building rating in Miljöbyggnad.Legislative requirements for reduced energy use partly had the desired effect, though at the same time, the differences between calculations and measurements increased. Revisions of indicator ratings suggests that installation systems of ventilation and heating were not properly tuned and needs to be adjusted. To which extent they intentionally or unintentionally abandoned the original plan during the construction process is left to more thorough studies to look into.

This thesis analyzes Application Layer security protocols for certificate enrollment and management. EDHOC, Ephemeral Diffie-HellmanOver COSE, is a recently developed key exchange protocol whichis designed to provide authentication and key-exchange functionality with compact message sizes and minimum round-trip-time. The workof this thesis extends the EDHOC protocol with a certificate enrollment functionality, targeting IoT constrained devices and it has been implemented for analysis and evaluation purposes. The main scope of this document is to study the security, performance and scalability (in descendingorder of importance) of enrollment over EDHOC compared to other certificate enrollment protocols. / Detta examensarbete analyserar säkerhetsprotokoll av typen ApplicationLayer för certifikatregistrering och hantering. EDHOC, Ephemeral Diffie-Hellman Over COSE, har implementerats, analyserats och utvärderats. EDHOC är ett nyligen utvecklat Application Layer-protokoll som är utformat för att tillhandahålla autentiserings- och nyckelfunktionsfunktioner med kompakta meddelandestorlekar och minimala rundturstider, inriktat på IoT-begränsade enheter. Huvudområdet för examensarbetet är att studera säkerhet, prestanda och skalbarhet (i fallande ordning av betydelse) hos EDHOC jämfört med andra föreslagna Application Layer-säkerhetsprotokoll som utför certifikatsskrivning.

Efficient, Scalable and Secure Vehicular Communication System : An Experimental Study

Awareness of vehicles’ surrounding conditions is important in today’s intelligent transportation system. A wide range of effort has been put in to deploy Vehicular Communication (VC) systems to make driving conditions safer and more efficient. Vehicles are aware of their surroundings with the help of authenticated safety beacons in VC systems. Since vehicles act according to the information conveyed by such beacons, verification of beacons plays an important role in becoming aware of and predicting the status of the sender vehicle. The idea of implementing secure mechanisms to deal with a high rate of incoming beacons and processing them with high efficiency becomes a very important part of the whole VC network. The goal of this work was to implement a scheme that deals with a high rate of the incoming beacon, preserve non-repudiation of the accepted messages which contains information about the current and near-future status of the sender vehicle, and at the same time keep the computation overhead as low as possible. Along with this, maintaining user privacy from a legal point of view as well as from a technical perspective by implementing privacy-enhancing technologies. These objectives were achieved by the introduction of Timed Efficient Stream Loss-Tolerant Authentication (TESLA), periodic signature verification, and cooperative verification respectively. Four different scenarios were implemented and evaluated, starting and building upon the baseline approach. Each approach addressed the problems that were aimed at this work and results show improved scalability and efficiency with the introduction of TESLA, periodic signature verification, and cooperative verification. / Medvetenheten om fordons omgivande förhållanden är viktig i dagens intelligenta transportsystem. Ett stort antal ansträngningar har lagts ned för att distribuera VC system för att göra körförhållandena säkrare och effektivare. Fordon är medvetna om sin omgivning med hjälp av autentiserade säkerhetsfyrar i VC system. Eftersom fordon agerar enligt den information som förmedlas av sådana fyrar, spelar verifiering av fyrar en viktig roll för att bli medveten om och förutsäga avsändarfordonets status. Idén att implementera säkra mekanismer för att hantera en hög frekvens av inkommande fyrar och bearbeta dem med hög effektivitet blir en mycket viktig del av hela VC nätverket. Målet med detta arbete var att implementera ett schema som behandlar en hög hastighet för det inkommande fyren, bevara icke-förkastelse av de accepterade meddelandena som innehåller information om den aktuella och närmaste framtida statusen för avsändarfordonet och samtidigt håll beräkningen så låg som möjligt. Tillsammans med detta upprätthåller användarnas integritet ur juridisk synvinkel såväl som ur ett tekniskt perspektiv genom att implementera integritetsförbättrande teknik. Dessa mål uppnåddes genom införandet av TESLA, periodisk signatur verifiering respektive samarbets verifiering. Fyra olika scenarier implementerades och utvärderades med utgångspunkt från baslinjemetoden. Varje tillvägagångssätt tog upp de problem som riktades mot detta arbete och resultaten visar förbättrad skalbarhet och effektivitet med införandet av TESLA, periodisk signatur verifiering och samarbets verifiering.
