Socially developing the man : exploring the perceptions of young, male university students in relation to gender studies.

Osikhena, Igbanoi Leo 01 July 2014 (has links)
The present study set out to explore how male university students perceive their involvement in gender studies and how this intersects with their masculine identities. The research was a qualitative one and semi-structured individual interviews were used to collect data from ten Humanities postgraduate students attending a large, urban university comprising men who do gender studies and those who do not. Two key informants were also interviewed for the study. Qualitative thematic content analysis was employed to analyse the data collected; these reflected themes that bordered around the men and their identities, gender equality, engagement in gender studies, and changing attitudes towards observable gender transformation. In comparing the responses of both categories of men, an inference made was that, although the men mostly expressed positive attitudes towards engagement in gender studies, there does not seem to be a direct relationship between exposing men to gender studies courses or not, and changes in perception towards gender relations. This was evidenced by the fact that both groups of men predominantly upheld traditional hegemonic ideals of masculinity through displays of complicit, accommodating and defensive masculinities amidst a couple of progressive representations. The study affirms the thesis that masculinity is socially constructed based on the contradictory manner in which the men spoke about their identities. This reaffirms the essentiality of speaking about men in diverse ways and rejecting any notions of singularity. Key words: Gender studies, masculinity, hegemonic masculinity, masculinities, university men, changing attitudes

The African National Congress' changing relationship with liberal democracy.

Brooks, Heidi 23 February 2007 (has links)
Student Number : 0510823J - MA research report - School of Social Sciences - Faculty of Humanities / This dissertation traces the changing relationship of the ANC with liberal democracy from the party's inception to the present, and analyses the various influences upon, and shifts within, the ANC's thinking with regard to liberal democracy over this period. The paper argues that the years between 1987 and 1994 represented a critical and dramatic shift in the ANC's relationship with liberal democratic values in which it came to openly state its acceptance of institutionalised pluralism and rights. It also argues, however, that despite the momentous and extremely valuable nature of these commitments for the consolidation of liberal democracy in South Africa, there remain suggestions within the language and discourse of the ANC that are problematic for its full realisation, the essence of which lies in the ANC's own understanding and interpretation of the meaning of liberal democracy

How to get changing patterns on a textile surface by using thermo chromic pigments and an inherently conductive polymer

Maleki, Laleh January 2013 (has links)
With regard to the recent interests in smart textiles, this research activity has been conducted with the aim of producing a pattern changing design on textiles. In order to fulfill the demands of such dynamic patterns a combinationof conductive polymer and thermochromic pigments wereused. The textile substrate was coated by conductive polymer dispersion(PEDOT:PSS) and it was followed with printing thermochromic pigments on the surface of coating. The driving force of such thermochromic reaction has to be provided by the heat generated from conductive layer dueto the current of electricity passing through the conductivelayer. These experiments were continued by changing thecoating recipe in order to achieve the highest possible electrical resistance, which leads to the best initiation ofthermochromic reactions. / Program: Master programme in Textile Technology

Job satisfaction and organisational commitment in a changing environment : insights from employees of Sefako Makgatho health science University

Mukwawaya, Owen Zivanai January 2015 (has links)
Thesis (MBA.) -- University of Limpopo, 2015 / This research report investigated job satisfaction and organisational commitment in a changing environment at Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU). The desire to this enquiry was a result of the recent de-merger and name change experienced at the University hence the researcher developed curiosity to determine if employees are still satisfied with their jobs and whether they are still committed to work for the organisation. The research also investigated the perceptions of employees regarding management of change at SMU. Evidence from the obtained data shows that employees are generally satisfied to work for SMU hence it seems to suggest that they are also committed to work for SMU. The research was quantitative in nature utilising convenient sampling method. A convenient sample size of (114) was utilised in the execution of this research. The sample was drawn from both administrative and academic staff of the institution. Sections A, B and C of the questionnaire were analysed using SPSS version 22 and section D of the questionnaire was analysed using thematic analysis.

Kaum tuatanga the changing roles of kaum tua in Ng ti Rehua: Future directions

Davies, Sydney Henare January 2008 (has links)
This study looks at the roles of kaum tua and investigates how these roles have changed over time. With the ageing Māori population and the reported importance of kaum tua roles in the wellbeing of Māori communities, the findings of this study provide an insight into the possible future direction of these roles. The study was conducted with the assistance of members of one hapu (N=47) that were 65 years of age and over. The study was by interview, utilising a semi-structured questionnaire with both open ended and closed questions. Narratives from participants was analysed and compared to the roles of kaum tua that were found in the literature, namely; Leadership, cultural knowledge, dispute resolution, protection and nurturing of young, provide spiritual and other guidance, social control, provide rituals, preserve te reo Māori and live active and healthy lives. Findings of this research supported the roles found in the literature. The roles of kaum tua still exist but may have diminished over time. The change in roles is in the adaptation to meet the needs of the time period while maintaining the core values of each role and providing a continuation of practices.

Tests of the standard model in photoproduction at HERA and the LHC

de Favereau de Jeneret, Jérôme 03 April 2009 (has links)
Photoproduction has been used at colliders for decades in order to study hadronic properties of matter. The energy and luminosity of recent and future colliders allow probing also the electroweak sector through photon-photon and photon-proton interactions. At the HERA electron-proton collider, studies of the W boson production provide a stringent test of the Standard Model. At the LHC, photoproduction has to be separated from the overwhelming background of partonic interactions. A powerful ‘tagging’ technique can be introduced by adding special detectors placed far from the interaction point to detect forward scattered protons, usually present in photon-mediated processes. The HECTOR software package was written in order to provide accurate simulation of forward protons trajectories in the LHC beam-lines. These tools have been used in order to study the photoproduction of top quarks via flavor-changing neutral currents. This process is practically absent in the Standard Model, while it appears in some of its extensions. Detection of such a process would thus be an evidence for the existence of physics beyond the Standard Model.

Skatternas betydelse vid val och byte av företagsform

Bohlin, Maria, Landås, Sofia, Hellblom-Björn, Sanna January 2012 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to examene which type of organisational form is the most beneficial in regard to taxation as well as examining if there are any tax related consequences associated with changing organisational form. This study is built upon both qualitative and deductive methods. The thesis makes use of primary data from semi-structured interviews with financial advisers and organizations. Secondary data has been collected from text books as well as scientific journals which are related to changing of organizational form.  The results of the study show that if organizations earnings are over the national income tax threshold, then a limited company is the most beneficial organizational form in regards to taxation. We have concluded that if a company is unable to start a limited company then the recommendation for owners is to start as a sole trader rather than a trading company. During the start period of an organization it was found that private law had the greatest impact upon the organization. However, during the reorganization tax related laws were found to be decisive. It was also found that there are tax related consequences associated with changing organizational form however if the reorganization is conducted in the right way these consequences can be avoided.
