The Effect of Harmonics on the Electrical Grid due to Electric Vehicle ChargersSolander Araúz, Ingemar January 2020 (has links)
In this thesis the effect of harmonics on the electrical grid from electric car chargers, specifically the effect on distribution transformers, is analyzed. The study was performed on the electrical grid of two areas provided by the electrical company Dala Energi. Electric car chargers are added to each customer connected to the electrical grid in both areas to examine the effects of harmonics on the distribution transformers. A model of the electrical grid of each area was recreated and simulated with the open source program OpenDSS. The effects of the added harmonic load on the electrical grid was evaluated in a range from 10% to a 100% of the consumers connected to the grid. The results of this study show an increase in losses due to harmonic distortion. However, the losses are less significant when the added electric car charger load is distributed between all three phases of the grid compared to one phase. All the added harmonics, except the 9th harmonic, maintain acceptable levels set by The Swedish Energy Market Inspectorate. The impact of the 9th harmonic can be reduced by installing filters. The main conclusion of this thesis is that to reduce the effects of harmonic on the grid the harmonic load should be distributed on all three phases. Also scheduling the charging time of the cars can be implemented to further even out the load variations on the electrical grid.

Goal of the study is to reduce the volume of the DCDCcharger which contains a bulky transformer. Thekey point is to use wide band gap transistors (GaN) toincrease the charger switching frequency. High switchingfrequency can improve power density but theinconvenient is the increase of switching and transformerlosses. The PhD dissertation is organized inthree steps. First step is the definition of a charger topology. This topology is optimized to reduce transformerlosses. Second part of the study is the theoreticaldesign of a high power density transformer. A completetransformer parametric model is presented withFinite Element Analysis. Third part present the prototypeand test results of the charger DC-DC. Fast on-board integrated chargers for electric vehicles / Chargeur rapide intégré pour véhicule électriqueSakr, Nadim 27 May 2016 (has links)
To date, the range autonomy of most electric vehicles is still lower than conventional fuel based vehicles and charging times are significantly longer. To overcome this problem, battery capacity could be increased but more importantly high power fast charging should be accessible everywhere. The widespread deployment of public DC fast charging stations is still difficult to achieve. So, in order to have a better spreading of the charge spots and a better coverage, it is also necessary for the vehicle to be charged from an on-board charger that could be plugged into three-phase AC power outlets.Furthermore, because the battery is charged only when the car is parked -except for regeneration at braking-, using the on-board traction system components to form an integrated charging device is possible. This kind of topology is called an integrated charger which allows designing a charger small enough to be embedded in a vehicle at an affordable cost.Several non-isolated on-board integrated charging topologies are proposed in this thesis and the one that best meets some predefined specifications is selected. This topology is studied in details and validated by simulation software. A laboratory prototype is also built to verify the performance of this multi-purpose traction/charger converter.

Phase Shift Modulation Techniques for Bidirectional Onboard Chargers in Electric VehiclesYuan, Jiaqi January 2023 (has links)
Bidirectional onboard chargers (OBCs) are becoming mainstream commercial charging equipment for electric vehicles (EVs) because of their compactness, flexibility, and demand-response capabilities for power backup. This thesis focuses on the novel phase shift (PS) modulation techniques for efficiency improvement for bidirectional OBCs, including two-stage onboard chargers (TSOBCs) and single-stage onboard chargers (SSOBCs).
A comprehensive overview and investigation of the state-of-the-art solutions of bidirectional OBCs are presented. It reviews the current industrial status, industrial applications, and future trends and challenges. A detailed overview of the promising topologies for bidirectional OBCs, including two-stage and single-stage structures, is also discussed in this thesis.
Traditional PS modulation has been widely used in the back-end DC/DC converters of the TSOBCs because of its simple implementation. However, it is challenging to keep high efficiency at boundary operating points within wide specifications. Therefore, to improve efficiency at the boundary point for TSOBCs, the hybrid multiple phase shift (HMPS) modulation technique with minimal peak current optimization is presented to maximize the zero-voltage switching (ZVS) range. Compared to traditional single phase shift (SPS) modulation, the experimental results verify that the presented HMPS modulation strategy provides 1%-2% higher efficiency at the boundary points.
On the other hand, an improved compact SSOBC topology and novel PS modulation techniques are proposed. Since the traditional PS modulation is challenging for AC/DC converters to keep a unity power factor (PF), novel PS modulation techniques are presented for the proposed SSOBC. Firstly, a sinusoidal single phase shift (SSPS) modulation introduces a sinusoidal phase shift to maintain a high PF and high efficiency within a wide operating point. However, due to the high current at the zero-crossing point of the grid voltage of the SSPS modulation, the novel adaptive sinusoidal single phase shift (ASSPS) modulation is presented to address this issue, which reduces conduction loss and increases efficiency. Secondly, based on the ASSPS modulation, the adaptive sinusoidal extended phase shift (ASEPS) modulation with minimal peak current optimization is presented to introduce one more degree of freedom to extend the ZVS flexibility, which reduces switching loss. Moreover, the minimal peak current optimization reduces transformer current, further decreasing conduction losses. Therefore, the power loss is minimized.
Finally, this thesis presents the general design guideline of a 6 kW Silicon Carbide (SiC)-based bidirectional SSOBC, contributing to the further development of bidirectional SSOBC application. Experimental results verify the operating principle and high PF of the proposed SSPS, ASSPS, and ASEPS modulation. 1 kW experimental testing has validated that the peak efficiency is 95.3% with ASSPS modulation and 95.9% with ASEPS modulation. Compared to the existing pulse width modulation (PWM), the ASSPS modulation increased efficiency by 1.1%, and ASEPS modulation further increased by 1.7%. / Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Velocity Control of a Mobile Charger in a Wireless Rechargeable Sensor Network / Hastighetsreglering av en Mobil Laddare i ett Trådlöst Laddningsbart SensornätverkHaltorp, Emilia January 2023 (has links)
Wireless sensor networks (WSN) are one of the most rapidly evolving technical areas right now. They can be used in a lot of different applications, environmental monitoring and health applications being two examples. The sensors can be placed in hazardous and remote environments since there is no need for cabling or manual maintenance. One of the biggest problems and constraints of today's WSNs is the limited energy capacity of the sensor nodes. Eventually they will be power-depleted, and the network will be dead. A solution to this can be wireless energy transfer technology which makes it possible to recharge sensor nodes with the help of a mobile charger and prolong the lifetime of networks. This thesis aims to investigate how the charging completion time can be reduced by considering that the charger can charge while moving and by controlling its velocity. The charging completion time is the time from when the charger starts charging the first node until it returns to that starting point. For this, a two-dimensional WSN was defined that contains sensor nodes and a mobile charger. Anchor nodes, which the charger travels between were defined by choosing the nodes with most neighbors within a defined charging radius. The traveling salesman problem were used to find a path that the charger travels along. A simulation environment was developed in Python to execute tests. The results show that the charging while moving approach with controlled velocity could reduce the charging completion time with up to 20%. It was also ascertained that this approach works better in dense networks than in sparse.

The gradual replacement of the current internal combustion engine vehicles by elec-tric vehicles (EVs) comes up as being an important factor to the improvement of urban centers environmental conditions, since it enables reduction on the emissions of atmo-spheric pollutants harmful to human health. Additional tasks, apart from traction, can be performed by battery and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle powertrain on-board power electronic converters. It is possible to integrate functions such as battery charge, electric distributed power generation and reactive power compensation with few modifications on the EV electronics circuitry. This kind of application is especially interesting under the context of smart grids. The integration of these additional functions to an electric vehicle is a very desirable feature, since it can result on cost reduction (in comparison to the separated implementation of the integrated functions) and revenue to the owner of the vehicle by providing ancillary services to the electric power system.
This work proposes the application of electric vehicles on the compensation of cur-rent harmonic components and reactive power in residential and commercial electricity networks by means of the integration of a shunt active power filter (APF) into their powertrain electronics circuitry, which can simultaneously operate with the EV bat-tery pack charging or during its use as an electric distributed power generator unit (vehicle-to-grid, V2G, operation mode). Since the EV grid connection standard cur-rently adopted by electric automobiles manufacturers is based on a single-phase power supply system (with a possible two-phase power supply connection), this work focuses on the application of an electric vehicle in the compensation of single-phase and two-phase loads under residential and commercial electricity networks typical conditions, in order to meet the compliance to the requirements of such standard. The inclusion of this functionality to EVs can contribute on the reduction of vehicular electrification impact on the electric power system, since the decrease of reactive and harmonic power flow into the grid results in higher available capacity of active power flow in the power conductors, which allows to supply electricity to new electric loads (that can be the EVs themselves).

The goal is to develop an aerosol charger based on a corona discharge for atmospheric concentration measurements (10^3-10^5 cm^-3) within a response time of 100 ms.Two ion sources, point-To-Hole and wire-To-Slit have been characterized. The increase of the ion flow in the post-Discharge by EHD ion confinement in both the discharge gap and the hole has been shown. At first, using an experimental survey driven in two mixing configurations, concentric and face-To-Face, we have confirmed the aerosol diffusion charging law which depends on aerosol diameter and Ni.t product, with Ni, the ions concentration and t, the charging time. Thus, the originality of this charger relies on the very high heterogeneity of unipolar ion densities (Ni0 >10^9 cm^-3) required to compensate the charging time of 50 ms. In these conditions, we have shown that aerosol diameter and the charging dynamic (which depends also on the diameter) control the aerosol trajectory. The chargers have, next, been compared in different operating conditions, mainly in terms of the maximal charging and the minimal losses. In the chosen charger (point-To-Hole ion source and concentric mixing), the relations charge/mobility and losses according to diameter have been characterized. We have also shown the linearity of the charged particles current with the aerosol concentration which allows the current-Concentration data inversionThe preliminary measurement system composed by the charger, the separator and the particle current measurements, satisfies the objectives of the study in terms of the concentration detection limit (10^3 cm^-3) and the response time (100 ms). We have thus shown the feasibility of an atmospheric aerosol concentration measurement system at 10 Hz using a corona discharge charger provided that the separation power is improved. Furthermore, knowing that aerosol losses are negligible and the lower limit of the partial charging, the developed charger is adaptable with other applications.

Optimierung des Motorbetriebsverhaltens und der Abgasemissionen beim Start und Warmlauf eines Ottomotors mit Sekundärluftlader / Optimization of Engine Performance and Exhaust Emissions During the Starting and Warm-Up of a Gasoline Engine with a Secondary Air ChargerHergemöller, Thorsten 13 August 2004 (has links) (PDF)
The paper investigates possible ways of optimizing the cold-start and warm-up performance of gasoline engines with secondary air injection. Due to its size, weight, performance capability, and especially its simple, thermodynamic operation the innovative secondary air injection system used for the investigations and featuring a secondary air charger has the potential to replace the secondary air pump used to date. The experimental investigations are preceded by the development of exhaust emission legislation and a theoretical analysis of the process leading to exhaust emissions. A simulation model is used to illustrate the dependencies of the secondary air charger on boundary engine conditions. Consequently it is possible to make a preselection for the air mass conducting properties of the secondary air charger in various fields of application. The results obtained by measurement in starting, warm-up, and in load changes, were used to analyze the emission improvement processes. The level of raw emissions is affected enormously by the time of injection of secondary air and the acceleration performance of the secondary air system. A comparison of all the measured variants with the secondary air pump and secondary air charger indicates that the secondary air charger system has a distinct emission advantage. In addition, by relieving the vehicle power supply the secondary air charger brings about a reduction in engine load, improved response, and higher secondary air mass flow. The result is a 20% to 30% reduction in raw HC emissions. The significant advantages over the secondary air pump are rounded off by benefits in terms of weight and bulk volume and a reduction in the amount of wiring. Tests conducted at low temperature (-7°C) and under high altitude conditions have also indicated advantages over the secondary air pump.
