Organized charity and the civic ideal in Indianapolis, 1879-1922

Badertscher, Katherine E. January 2015 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / The Charity Organization Society of Indianapolis experienced founding, maturing, and corporate phases between 1879 and 1922. Indianapolis provided the ideal setting for the organized charity movement to flourish. Men and women innovated to act on their civic ideal to make Indianapolis a desirable city. As charity leaders applied the new techniques of scientific philanthropy, they assembled data one case at a time and based solutions to social problems on reforming individuals. The COS enjoyed its peak influence and legitimacy between 1891 and 1911. The organization continually learned from its work and advised other charities in Indianapolis and the U.S. The connected men and women engaged in organized charity learned that it was not enough to reform every individual who came to them for help. Industrialization created new socioeconomic strata and new forms of dependence. As the COS evolved, it implemented more systemic solutions to combat illness, unemployment, and poverty. After 1911 the COS stagnated while Indianapolis diversified economically, culturally, ethnically, and socially. The COS failed to adapt to its rapidly changing environment; it could not withstand competition, internal upheaval, specialization, and professionalization. Its general mission, to aid anyone in need, became lost in the shadow of child saving. Mid-level businessmen, corporate entities, professional social workers, service club members, and ethnic and racial minorities all participated in philanthropy. The powerful cache of social capital enervated and the civic ideal took on different dimensions. In 1922 the COS merged with other agencies to form the Family Welfare Society. This dissertation contributes to the scholarship of charity organization societies and social welfare policy. The scientific philanthropy movement did not represent an enormous leap from neighborhood benevolence. COSs represented neither a sinister agenda nor the best system to eradicate poverty. Organized charity did not create a single response to poverty, but a series of incremental responses that evolved over more than four decades. The women of Indianapolis exhibited more agency in their charitable work than is commonly understood. Charitable actors worked to harness giving and volunteering, bring an end to misery, and make Indianapolis an ideal city.

Pettersson, Amanda, Moestam, Karin January 2017 (has links)
Social media is an important channel for charitable organisations to reach potential donors and volunteers by communicating who and what requires their aid. This thesis aims to explain how a charitable organization can use these channels to its advantage through creating more reactions from their readers in the form of likes, comments and shares. This subject is explored under the following main research question:  Which aspects of a charity’s communication in social media creates the most and the least amount of reactions from those who receive the communication?  The research question is answered using an abductive approach in a netnographic observation of posts and comments on the Swedish Red Cross Facebook-wall during the months of September 2012 and September 2016. Data from two months with four years in between was observed in order to create further understanding of how this phenomenon has changed over time. Additionally, an interview was conducted with two employees at the Swedish Red Cross to supplement the netnographic observation.  The results of the study indicate that four overarching themes were essential in determining the reaction a post receives: Drama, a connection to news and sharing values led to more reactions, whilst urging the readers to take action led to fewer reactions. The results also show that whilst the Swedish Red Cross’ use of Facebook has become more professional since 2012, the themes determining how many reactions a post receives remain the same. The results were analysed using the theories of compassion fatigue, clicktivism and intertextuality.  Lastly, this thesis offers a discussion about how progressing towards increasingly striking messages in social media may result in people caring less. And furthermore, how the underlying mechanisms affecting people’s choices on social media may have consequences for society as a whole.

Finding Margaret Haughery: The Forgotten and Remembered Lives of New Orleans’s “Bread Woman” In the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries

Luck, Katherine Adrienne 16 May 2014 (has links)
Margaret Haughery (1813-1882), a widowed, illiterate Irish immigrant who became known as “the Bread Woman” of New Orleans and the “Angel of the Delta” had grossed over $40,000 by the time of her death. She owned and ran a dairy farm and nationally-known bakery, donated to orphanages, leased property, owned slaves, joined with business partners and brought lawsuits. Although Haughery accomplished much in her life, she is commonly remembered only for her benevolent work with orphans and the poor. In 1884, a statue of her, posed with orphans, was erected by the city’s elite, one of the earliest statues of a woman in the nation. This thesis argues that it was Haughery’s willingness to engage in the mundane business practices of the day, including slaveholding, that made her veneration as a benefactress possible. Using acts of sale, property records, wills, newspaper articles, advertisements, and representations of Haughery, this thesis explores the life behind the image of the “Bread Woman.”

Sociální činnost náboženských obcí (CČS) od jejího vzniku do padesátých let 20. století / Parish Social Works in the Czechoslovak Church from 1920 to 1955

Tichá, Františka January 2011 (has links)
SOCIÁLNÍ ČINNOST NÁBOŽENSKÝCH OBCÍ ( CČS) OD JEJÍHO VZNIKU DO PADESATÝCH LET 20. STOLETÍ PARISH SOCIAL WORKS IN THE CZECHOSLOVAK CHURCH FROM 1920 - 1955 Autor: Františka Tichá In this work, I pursued the parish social works in the Czechoslovak church from its rise to 1950's. I partially captured an origin of the roots of the Christian church's social works in chapter two. Chapter three describes the rise of the Czechoslovak church and its social works development. The views of some of the Czechoslovak church's theologians on social concerns are captured in chapter four. Chapter five analyzes the social works in three selected parishes. In chapter six, I explained how the Czechoslovak church's teachings were implemented in parishes. Chapter seven discusses the downfall of the social works within the Czechoslovak church after February 1948. In conclusion, I have arrived at an opinion that the social works unions laid out an admirable effort in this field. It is unfortunate that due to the political changes in 1948 the social works unions had to undergo a liquidation.

Pobreza e alianças: análise das relações entre uma comunidade de vida e aliança no Espírito Santo e a cidade de São Paulo / Poverty and alliances: an analysis of the relations between a life and alliance within the Holy Ghost community and the city of São Paulo

Jacinto, Pierina Angélica Soratto 21 February 2011 (has links)
This dissertation examines the mutual construction of religion and the city. More specifically, the analysis is focused in how catholic activities, houses and beliefs conceive and are related to urban spaces and actors, articulating circuits, patches and turfs in São Paulo. On the other hand, this approach also analyses how the city, as a social reality historically constructed, framed formatted the establishment, as well as how it reflects on the catholic activities, houses and beliefs observed. The empirical object of this research consists of a religious organization usually classified as a life and alliance within the Holy Ghost community, called Mercy alliance, anthropologically analyzed by means of the ethnographic theoretical and methodological resource (method). The Mercy Alliance is constituted as a religious actor, which establishes its houses and activities, therefore relating itself to the city, by means of a broad notion of poverty. This Christian notion of poverty is responsible for the making of several alliances, on which the observed community legitimates and supports its actions in different urban domains. Finally, the notion of poverty developed by the Mercy Alliance engenders the demonization of certain urban spaces and actors, classified as poor in a material sense, thus articulating a definition of the city as hell that shall be evangelized by new and different methods.

Honremos a pátria senhores!

Nesse sentido, uti / This paper investigates the historical trajetory of the Portuguese Beneficent Societies, from 1854 to 1910, in the cities of Porto Alegre, Rio Grande, Pelotas and Bagé. It discusses their importance as entablishments of hospital assistance crated by Portuguese immigrants, based on the institucional model of Mercy in Portugal, as well as constructors of Portugueses identify. The research approaches the existent relationships between the assistance provided by the institutions and formation of the local upper-class. It evidences how the assistance work, through solidary functions, gift exchanges among institutions and entities, were ptomoters of the social visibility. With a dualist comprehension of charity, sometimes guided by the Christian faith, representing the Catholic concepts, sometimes guided by the power relations, this investigations tried to clarify the Benefit´s Societies representations as groups of support willing for self-approval. Les établissements de soins, d’accueil et d’assistance à Paris du XIIe au début du XVIe siècle : implantation, architecture et aménagements / Healthcare, reception and charity institutions from the twelfth to the beginning of the fifteeth century : location, architecture, functional and spatial organisation

Gourbière, Justine 05 December 2015 (has links)
From the twelfth to the first half of the fourteenth century, the Parisian monumental creation was characterised by an unprecedented profusion of assistance institutions. In this survey, important consideration has been given to topographic registration: as whole components of the urban landscape, these complexes influenced the space organization of the city. Although their establishment resulted from various acquisition strategies, it proceeded from a clear set of criteria, and entailed big changes which altered both the land parcel plan and the built landscape in their environment. The integration of care and residential facilities into the Parisian society of the Middle-ages also favoured numerous interactions that can be measured to the scope of their economical, social and religious relationships. A properly monumental dimension was added to the topographical dimension of the topic, and the study of the establishments in their spatial and structural integrity was given detailed consideration. Their general organisation was closely examined, together with the architecture and function of their components. This resulted in a most complex collection of buildings, with various degrees of specialisation, which makes it impossible to define any standard plan or architecture. Not a single trace remains of these buildings nowadays : scanning an extensive, though unbalanced, documentation, cross-referencing the available sources and drawing comparisons with other establishments outside the Parisian framework has then been a crucial task . Medieval hospitals have been dealt with according to a multidisciplinary approach, and they are no longer seen from a purely monographical or historical point of view. Our survey is intended to be a comprehensive approach, including the buildings, the men, and the city in which they fit.
