In healthcare, personal protective equipment (PPE) are sometimes misused due to improper skill acquisition or skill decay before clinical practice. Training is often didactic or web-based but it is unclear whether these methods transfer to effective physical performance. There is no standard method to evaluate these competencies and scheduling or space restrictions can limit physical practice. A Delphi survey produced relevant checklist and global rating items for evaluating use of PPE. Principles from skill learning and human-computer interaction were combined with the survey results to develop an interactive computer-based simulation for procedural practice of these skills. The assessment tool differentiated between experienced and newly-trained users and demonstrated inter-rater reliability. Learners rated their satisfaction with the simulation similar to a provincial online tutorial and pilot studies with the simulation demonstrated that learners practiced for a longer period when using the simulation as compared to the provincial online tutorial.

ABSTRACTStudying patients' reduced autonomy in acute care is complicated. There are few studies describing the patient's perspective in acute intubations. This was a quantitative literature study, where the primary purpose was to examine if there were evidence based plans of action to improve patient safety with intubations at the emergency room. The main question was if an empathetic approach was included. The theoretical framework is based on Jean Watson and her philosophy of care and basic human needs, in this study concentrating on breathing. The method used was literature searches in the database PubMed/Medline and Cinahl, main search words were patient safety, intubation, checklists complications and nursing. Criteria for inclusion in this study: adult patients in need of acute intubation related to respiratory failure caused by various causes. Children under the age of 18 and intubations that were performed pre-hospital were excluded. 14 studies were included, four randomized intervention studies, five intervention studies without randomization and five observational studies. All studies were rated reasonably strong to very strong on the GRADE review template. The main group of results centered around patient safety that generated three subcategories in the form of checklists, preventive measures and structured work methods. No studies described guidelines that included empathetic approach.The literature identified 7 common factors for increasing patient security during intubation: teamwork, communication, simulation training, body position, pre-oxygenating, medication and experience/technique. Secondarily, results showed that checklists were good for patient security, when combined with a structured way of working.Conclusion: Guidelines were available concerning complications in emergency intubations and patient safety may increase if checklist is used. However, the literature study shows that the checklists lacked an empathetic approach in emergency situations with acute intubation. The literature study may be important as a basis for further research but another study design is proposed / SAMMANFATTNING Studera patienters nedsatta autonomi vid akuta omhändertaganden är komplicerat. Det finns få studier som beskriver patientens perspektiv vid akuta intubationer. Forskningsdesignen var en kvantitativ litteraturstudie, där det primära syftet var att undersöka om det fanns evidensbaserade riktlinjer för att förbättra patientsäkerheten vid akuta intubationer på akutrummet. Den viktigaste frågeställningen var om empatiskt förhållningssätt fanns inkluderat i riktlinjer. Det teoretiska ramverket knöts till Jean Watson och hennes filosofi kring omvårdnad och fundamentala mänskliga behov, i detta arbete ligger tyngdpunkten på andningen. Metoden var litteratursökning i databaserna PubMed/Medline och Cinahl, huvudsökorden var patient safety, intubation, checklist, complications och nursing. Inklusionkriterier var vuxna patienter i behov av akut intubation relaterat till respiratorisk svikt av olika orsaker. Barn under 18 år och prehospitala intubationer exkluderades. Totalt inkluderades 14 studier, varav fyra randomiserade interventionsstudier, fem interventionsstudier utan randomisering samt fem observationsstudier. Samtliga studier bedömdes ha måttligt starkt till starkt vetenskapligt underlag enligt GRADE granskningsmall. Resultatet visade en huvudgrupp med patientsäkerhet som genererade tre undergrupper i form av checklista, förebyggande metoder och strukturerat arbetsätt. Inga studier beskrev riktlinjer som inkluderade empatiskt förhållningssätt. I litteraturstudien identifierades sju gemensamma faktorer för att öka patientsäkerheten vid akuta intubationer; teamwork, kommunikation, simuleringsövningar, kroppsposition, preoxygenerering, läkemedel och erfarenhet/teknik. Sekundärt visade resultatet att checklistor var bra för patientsäkerheten, men att dessa bör kombineras med ett strukturerat arbetsätt. Slutsats: Riktlinjer finns gällande komplikationer vid akuta intuberingar och patientsäkerheten verkar kunna öka om checklista används. Litteraturstudien visar dock att checklistorna saknade ett empatiskt förhållningssätt i vårdsituationer med akut intubering. Litteraturstudien kan få betydelse som grund för vidare forskning men en annan studiedesign föreslås.

Concern of this thesis is a topic of an IT audit on financial institutions. These institutions are subject to severe regulations and considering their purpose -- to provide financial services, it has to be maintained unconditional security of both their information system and data. Therefore, financial institutions belong to the group of the most common customers of IT audit services. Opening part is dedicated to the relationship between financial audit and IT audit. Their history is described until present days. Both local and international contemporary legislation is also described. Then the COBIT methodology is introduced as main methodology concerning IT auditing. Finally, conclusions about relationship between financial audit and IT audit are presented. Following part of this thesis introduce essential requirements on financial institutions controls that are specific for this sector. There are several kinds of assurances and audit is only one of them, so the following part is dedicated to the introduction of each kind with description of their specifics. In the last, practical, part the IT audit checklist for financial institutions is worked out.

OBSERVATIONS OF TEACHER EXPERTISE BEHAVIOR BASED ON A CHECKLIST DEVELOPED FROM STUDENT PERCEPTIONSTimony, David D. January 2009 (has links)
Exploration into teacher competency of various types has gone on for quite some time. An untapped resource regarding teacher expertise is that of the students' perceptions of teacher expertise, particularly the ability of students to identify the types of behaviors that expert and non-expert teachers exhibit in the classroom. The frequency and variety of expert behaviors in the high school classroom were investigated in this study. High school teachers (n = 25) were observed during regular class periods using the Teacher Behavior Checklist, a checklist of behaviors developed for this study from discussions with high school students, teachers, administrators, and existing teacher competency literature. Results suggest discrimination of expert and non-expert teachers similar to Berliner (2001). Agreement among students' perception of expertise, classroom observations, and the literature suggest that high school students are capable of accurately identifying expert and non-expert behaviors of teachers. Further, some data suggest that expert teachers draw from a narrower behavioral scheme and exhibit expert designated behaviors more often than do their non-expert colleagues. This study highlights the need to close the evaluative loop through the utilization of student perception. / Educational Psychology

Developing a Reporting Item Checklist for Studies on the Prevalence of HIV Drug Resistance: A Mixed Methods StudyGarcia, Michael Cristian January 2022 (has links)
Background: HIV drug resistance limits the effectiveness of antiretroviral therapy. Adequate surveillance of HIV drug resistance prevalence is challenged by heterogenous and inadequate data reporting. In this study, we sought to identify a list of reporting items for studies of HIV drug resistance prevalence and an understanding of why these items are important to report. Methods: We used a mixed-methods sequential explanatory design involving authors and users of studies of HIV drug resistance prevalence. In the quantitative phase we conducted a cross-sectional electronic survey (n=51). Survey participants rated various reporting items on whether they are essential to report, producing validity ratios which were used to produce a draft reporting item checklist. In the qualitative phase, two focus group discussions (n=9 in total) discussed this draft item checklist and which of the items should be reported and why. We also conducted a thematic analysis of the group discussions to identify emergent themes regarding items to be considered for the reporting guideline. Results: We identified 38 potential reporting items including participant characteristics, sampling methods, and resistance testing methods. The strongest themes that emerged from the discussions were agreement over the importance of reporting certain items, concerns over the availability and ethics of reporting certain participant data, the importance of interpretability and comparability, and the necessity for reporting guidelines to appreciate context-specific prevalence research. Conclusions: We have identified a list of reporting items for studies of the prevalence of HIV drug resistance along with an explanation of why researchers believe these items are important. The next steps involve further elaborating upon these findings in the reporting guidelines. / Thesis / Master of Science (MSc) / Drug resistant HIV is very challenging to treat and is an important global health problem. It is difficult to know how common HIV drug resistance is around the world because the studies on HIV drug resistance are not reported similarly. This is because there are no standard guidelines for these studies. In this study, we asked HIV drug resistance researchers to complete a survey on what they thought should be reported is studies measuring HIV drug resistance. Then, we had group conversations where we asked them to explain why they believed the items were important. We identified 38 potential reporting items, most of which would require authors of HIV drug resistance studies to clarify the settings, participants and methods used in their research. These items will make up a reporting checklist for authors of HIV drug resistance studies and make research in this area more comparable

Comprehensive Survey of Butterflies at the Sam D. Hamilton Noxubee National Wildlife RefugeGesell, Jordan 25 November 2020 (has links)
In collaboration with the Sam D. Hamilton Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge, I collected detailed information on the butterflies (Lepidoptera: Papilionoidea Latreille, 1802) of the refuge. I produced a comprehensive checklist of butterflies and skippers numbering 60 species. In addition, I collected data on flight periods as well as local plant community associations. Butterfly abundance surveys were conducted to assess seasonal habitat use across six site classes. Special emphasis was placed on pine forest at various stages of management for the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker (Picoides borealis). An exploratory analysis of butterfly diversity and abundance was conducted using non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS). Using a Pearson correlation, I determined that butterfly species richness correlated positively with understory plant morphospecies richness across site classes. A correlation was not found for data solely collected from the pine sites, suggesting factors other than understory morphospecies richness govern butterfly richness within a site class.
