Effects of Teacher Consultation on Evidence-Based Classroom Management Strategies: Teacher and Student BehaviorFunk, Kristin Marie January 2013 (has links)
The American Psychological Association (APA) conducted the online 2005-2006 Teacher Needs Survey wherein 52% of first year teachers, 28% of teachers with two to five years of experience, and 26% of teachers with 6 to 10 years experience ranked classroom management as their greatest need. Difficulty managing student behaviors leads to higher stress and burnout for teachers (Smith & Smith, 2006) as well as less instructional time, lower grades, and poorer performance on standardized tests for students (Shinn, Ramsey, Walker, Stieber, & O'Neill, 1987). When teachers are charged with managing their own classrooms in the field, they are often inadequately prepared (Bergeny & Martens, 2006) and professional development workshops and inservices on classroom management are often ineffective (Allen & Forman, 1984, Fixsen, Naoom, Blasé, Friedman, & Wallace, 2005). The focus of the current study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a checklist of evidence-based classroom management strategies both by itself and coupled with feedback and an action plan. Effectiveness was measured by the percentage of strategies from the checklist that were implemented by the teacher as well as the percentage of disruptive behavior by students in the classroom. The checklist consisted of 17 evidence-based classroom management strategies that were divided into three areas: Beginning of Class; During Instruction; and Responding to Student Behavior. The study consisted of four conditions: Baseline; Checklist; Checklist, Feedback, and Action Plan; and Maintenance. During the Checklist condition, the investigator and teacher read through evidence-based classroom management strategies on the checklist and reviewed examples and non-examples of the strategies. During the Checklist, Feedback, and Action Plan condition, the investigator and teacher reviewed the graphed data on the teacher's use of the strategies during Baseline and Checklist conditions. After reviewing the data, the teacher and investigator identified a maximum of three strategies from the checklist to implement and an action plan for how to implement those strategies was created. Then, after each observation, a checklist scored by the investigator was given to the teacher. During Maintenance, the teacher no longer received a scored checklist following the observations. Three elementary, self-contained classroom teachers of students with emotional and behavioral disorders participated in the study. During Baseline, the teachers used an average of 20% to 30% of the evidence-based classroom management strategies and the percentages of disruptive behavior ranged from an average of 60% to 90%. During the Checklist condition, the level of the data immediately increased for percentage of strategies used and the level of the data for disruptive behavior decreased, for two of the teachers. The changes in level for both percentage of strategies used and percentage of disruptive behavior, however, did not remain. One teacher returned to baseline levels for both percentage of strategies used and percentage of disruptive behavior. The other teacher showed a slight increase from baseline levels for percentage of strategies used, but the percentage of disruptive behavior returned to baseline levels. For the third teacher, no significant change in level was observed for percentage of strategies used and percentage of disruptive behavior. All three teachers, however, demonstrated increased use of the strategies and decreased percentages of disruptive behavior, when the checklist was coupled with feedback and an action plan. From Baseline to the Checklist, Feedback, Action Plan condition, the average percentages of strategies used were: Teacher A, 24% to 93%; Teacher B, 23% to 93%; and Teacher C, 33% to 88%. During Maintenance, Teacher A used an average of 92% of evidence-based classroom management strategies and Teachers B and C used 94% of evidence-based classroom management strategies. From Baseline to Maintenance, the average percentages of disruptive behavior were: Teacher A, 76% to 17%; Teacher B, 91% to 13%; and Teacher C, 64% to 12%. All three teachers found the intervention to be acceptable. Specifically, the teachers reported that: this intervention would be beneficial and appropriate for a variety of students; they were likely to use this intervention in the future; they liked the procedures used; and they were more likely to stay in their current teaching position after using this intervention. / Educational Psychology

Bad Faith and Checklist Tourism: A Sartrean AnalysisLaSusa, Danielle Marie January 2010 (has links)
This project offers a unique contribution to the scholarship on Jean-Paul Sartre's concept of bad faith by providing a sustained exploration of bad faith in the context of contemporary tourism. More specifically, I explore the bad faith of what I call "checklist tourism," which defines the tourist trip as a rapid succession of visits from one "must-see" site to the next, snapping photos and collecting souvenirs along the way. I argue that checklist tourism offers a safe and comfortable structure for travel that protects tourists against Sartrean anguish--that is, the experience of alienation, fear, freedom, and responsibility--that travel can sometimes evoke. This analysis contributes to the literature on bad faith in three main ways. First, I provide an extended analysis of the Sartrean spirit of seriousness, highlighting part of this concept that has thus far been underdeveloped in the scholarship. I argue that checklist tourism manifests the spirit of seriousness, which accepts the obligation of "must-see" sites and belief in the transcendent value of the material objects seen on the tour. Second, I explore the embodied bad faith of the possession and appropriation of the material world (rather than studying the possession of people, as most scholars have done), arguing that the tourist attempts to appropriate tourist sites through bodily engagement with them. Third, I develop a theory of play as authenticity, and I offer a systematic investigation of it as a rejection of the ontological bad faith project to be self-identical (i.e. to be God), and a reflective conversion to self-recovery. I then explore the character of the "post-tourist," which has been developing in the tourism literature and which represents a way of touring that rejects the seriousness of the "must-see" sites in favor of an attitude of levity, spontaneity, and playfulness. / Philosophy

The vegetation of Tocantins is predominantly Cerrado (91%), and less than 10% correspond to ombrophilous formations and seasonal forest. The easy removal of vegetation from the soil, from savannas, converting it to extensive use of monocultures and livestock intensifies the loss of microhabitats. The present study made possible a checklist through the collection of primary data, in loco, for the localities of Taquaruçu (District of Palmas) and Araguaína, these represent the two biomes present in the state – Cerrado and Amazon, respectively – and secondary ones through registers And the compilation of local and border studies that present a faunal interaction of snakes to the Tocantins. The list of snakes reached 96 species distributed in 9 families: Anomalepididae (1 sp.), Leptotyphlopidae (6 spp.), Typhlopidae (1 sp.), Aniliidae (1 sp.), Boidae (8 spp.), Colubridae (17 spp.), Dipsadidae (53 spp.), Elapidae (4 spp.) and Viperidae (5 spp.), of the snake families in Brazil were not represented only Tropidophiidae. There is a predominance of species typical of the Cerrado, also being observed the existence of species of the confronting biomes, with some Amazonian representatives registered in the central and southern regions of the state following the gallery forests of the Araguaia-Tocantins basin. Other data that deserve importance are for the species Siagonodon acutirostris that has geographic distribution restricted to Tocantins; The extension of distribution to Araguaína of the species Apostolepis nelsonjorgei, previously recorded in Tocantins at the Serra Geral do Tocantins and Porto Nacional Ecological Station, and Corallus batesii being the third record in the north of the state. The total richness of recorded species is similar with the results of studies from other points in the Cerrado. The state map was elaborated using geoprocessing programs to characterize the 63 municipalities, where records were obtained, and also to demonstrate which points are without studies or records, for future surveys of data that will aid in a broader and more complete list for Tocantins. This characterization of local species, besides creating a way to guide people about the species of snakes that inhabit the environment where they live, evaluates the wealth contributing to the knowledge of the local fauna and, above all, aim at a more harmonious relationship so that the valorization of nature progresses in humans.

Avaliação das condições higienicossanitárias e análise de parâmetros microbiológicos, físico-químicos e sensoriais de filés de Polaca do Alasca (Gadus chalcogrammus) congelados expostos à venda em supermercados da Grande São Paulo / Evaluation of hygienic-sanitary conditions and analysis of microbiological, chemical and physico-chemical parameters of Walleye Pollock (Gadus chalcogrammus) frozen fillets exposed for sale in supermarkets of Greater São PauloLange, Tarcila Neves 06 February 2015 (has links)
Introduction - Fish products are widely used for food production based on raw material of animal origin. In the last decades, technological innovations enabled a raise in the commercialization of frozen fish fillets that turned the temperature control throughout the food chain into essential for its quality maintenance. The import trade of fish products, amongst them the Walleye Pollock, is increasing year after year, being the supermarkets and hypermarkets of São Paulos Metropolitan Region responsible for 49,0 per cent of all Brazilian imported fish products demand. Objective - To evaluate the hygienic-sanitary conditions of packaged frozen fish exposed for sale in supermarkets of Greater São Paulo in accordance with legal regulations. Methodology - This study was based upon two approaches: case study research and laboratory analysis. It was selected 30 supermarkets of four counties of the Greater São Paulo region for the evaluation of products and equipments hygienic-sanitary conditions by the application of a specific checklist and sample collection, from 7 to 29 September 2013. It was collected 30 samples, which one comprised of 3 - 1 kg packages of Walleye Pollock frozen fillets from the same brand, batch number, manufacturing and expiration date, representing 3 kg by sample and totaling 90 kg of analyzed product. A share of these samples, 30 - 1 kg packages, was accommodated and transported in temperature-controlled isothermal box to the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science of USP laboratory for the microbiological (Coagulase positive Staphylococci and Salmonella spp) analysis. The other 60 - 1kg packages were sent, under the same conditions, to the Fishery Institute for physico-chemical (pH, N-BVT and N-TMA and sensory (colorimetry and texture) analysis. Results - The non-compliance acts more frequently observed in the checklist, in descending order, were: presence of ice crystals (100,0 per cent ) and abusive temperature above - 12°C (100,0 per cent ) of the products, absence of SIF imprint (83,3 per cent ); lack of truthfulness in the temperature indicated on the equipment thermometer (66,6 per cent ) and presence of food remains at the bottom of the equipment (50,0 per cent ). The physico-chemical analysis for N-BVT and N-TMA; and, the microbiological analysis for Salmonella spp/25 g and the coagulase positive Staphylococci counts indicated 100,0 per cent of compliance with legal regulations. The totality of the samples were inadequate for the pH parameter, with measurements ranging from 6,86 to 8,57. The sensory analysis shown values of fillet firmness of 9,02 to 2,52 N, in an average of 5,3 &177; 1,6 N and the colorimetry indicated that the walleye pollock fillets were darkened and yellowish. Conclusion - The checklist results pointed out to deficiencies in controlling the temperature and freezers operations and did not offer the ideal conditions to frozen fishs quality maintenance throughout its storage. Although the microbiological analysis results showed that the frozen fish fillets were appropriate for consumption, the physic-chemical analysis, particularly the pH parameters, were not in accordance with values indicated in the current regulation.

Translation, psychometric evaluation, and preliminary validation of a Zulu version of the SCL-90-R.Shanahan, Sean Francis. January 1998 (has links)
This study is seen as a step towards addressing the acute
shortage of psychometric instruments that can be validly and
reliably used in the assessment of Zulu-speaking individuals.
The Symptom Checklist-90-Revised (SCL-90-R) , a 90-item
multidimensional self-report symptom inventory, was translated
into Zulu. A multistage translation procedure, involving back-translation,
decentering, and the committee approach was
employed. The translated instrument was pretested on a group of
Zulu farm workers (N = 12) and revisions made in order to improve
its comprehensibility and acceptability to Zulu respondents. The
psychometric equivalence of the Zulu and English versions of the
SCL-90-R was investigated with bilingual Zulu students (N = 61) .
Scale-level factor analysis yielded similar factor structures for
both versions, and suggests that the Zulu SCL-90-R may be best
utilised as a global measure of psychological distress. Scores
at the scale- and item-level were reasonably comparable for the
two language versions, although retest effects and apparent
bilingual response sets suggest that the bilingual technique may
not be a valid means of assessing translation equivalence.
Acceptable test-retest reliability and internal consistency
measures were obtained, indicating that the translation into Zulu
did not adversely affect the reliability of the SCL-90-R. The
concurrent validity of the Zulu SCL-90-R was investigated with
samples of male psychiatric inpatients (N = 23) and nonpatients
(N = 26). The global severity index of the SCL-90-R demonstrated
moderate diagnostic efficiency, with a sensitivity of 70% and a
specificity of 77%. These results suggest that the Zulu SCL-90-R
may be validly utilised for the purpose of screening for mental
illness. / Thesis (M.Soc.Sci.)-University of Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 1998.

This study aimed to study the comparison between the protocol and the protocol Couto Strain Index, Moore and Garg, for ergonomic work analysis in two positions in the industry turning the machining of a medium-sized industry, metallurgical industry. To this end, we carried out a theoretical basis for presentation of methods, protocols are not equivalent (although they are applied as such). It was an applied research, whose results were submitted to quantitative analysis, in order to understand the mechanisms of injury that are subject to the operators of lathes in this particular case, a metal industry, which has two turning stations, one for larger parts that need the use of lifting devices and other station dedicated to smaller parts, capable of being handled by the operator. It was concluded that the relationship between work and health requires the establishment and implementation by organizations and prevention policies, building an organizational culture that is conducive to achieving the mission of the organization with the guarantee of quality of life and fulfillment of people.

Adaptação transcultural e confiabilidade do questionário 12 item Allodynia Symptom Checklist para o Brasil / Cross-cultural adaptation and reliability of the 12 item Allodynia Symptom Checklist for the Brazilian populationFlorencio, Lidiane Lima 22 February 2013 (has links)
Since there was no portuguese questionnaire to evaluate cutaneous allodynia in migraine population, which has been pointed out as a central sensibilization flag and as risk factor of migraine chronification we aimed to perform the cross-cultural adaptation of the 12 item Allodynia Symptom Checklist for the Brazilian population and to test its reliability. It consisted in six stages: translation, synthesis, back translation, revision by a specialist committee, pretest, and submission the documents to the committee. In the pretest stage, the questionnaire was applied to 30 migraineurs of both sexes, who had some difficulty in understanding it. Thus, a second version was applied to 30 additional subjects, with no others difficulties being reported. The mean filling out time was 336and the internal consistency was considered adequate showing a good interrelation between items (Cronbachs = 0,77). To test reliability, 30 other subjects filled out the questionnaire at two different times, 15 of them in a self-report administration and 15 in a structured interview. It was classified as moderate (linear weighted kappa = 0.58) and as excellent (linear weighted kappa = 0.84) respectively. In this study, it was possible to make available in portuguese a valid, reliable and easy tool for cutaneous allodynia assessment in Brazil.

Assessing Patients' and Radiation Therapists’ Perceptions of Safety in Radiation Therapy and Using a Patient-provider Collaborative Checklist to Engage PatientsCrupi, Michael Kyle 21 November 2013 (has links)
Approximately 52% of cancer patients require radiation therapy during the progression of their illness. Radiation therapy is a safe procedure; however, errors may occur and have the potential to harm patients. Recent studies have looked at patient engagement as a means of preventing errors in healthcare. Through interviews and focus groups, this study looks at patients’ and radiation therapists’ current perceptions of safety in radiation therapy and whether they feel that patient engagement in the form of a patient-provider collaborative checklist can improve its safety or the perception of safety. Through workflow observations and literature reviews, a patient-provider collaborative checklist was developed. Furthermore, STAI surveys were conducted to document the progression of patient anxiety through treatment. Feedback from radiation therapists demonstrated their opinions on the usability of the final iteration of the patient-provider collaborative checklist and how it could fit into the clinical setting.
