Study of chic production using HERA-B data

Aleksandrov, Aleksandar 12 August 2010 (has links)
The data used for the analysis have been taken by the fixed-target experiment HERA-B that uses the HERA proton beam to scatter protons off the nuclei of different wire targets. About $122\cdot10^{3}$ recorded muonic $J/\psi$ decays, $J/\psi\rightarrow\mu^{+}\mu^{-}$, resulted in almost $10\,000$ reconstructed $\chi_{c}\rightarrow J/\psi\gamma$. The ratio $R_{\chi_{c}} = \sum_{i=1,2}{\sigma(\chi_{ci}) Br(\chi_{ci}\rightarrow J/\psi\gamma) /\sigma(J/\psi)}$, which is the ratio of $J/\psi$ from $\chi_c$ decays to all produced $J/\psi$, was measured in the kinematical range $-0.35

An ethico-aesthetics of injecting drug use: body, space, memory, capital

Malins, Peta Husper January 2009 (has links)
Harm minimisation approaches to illicit drug use have proven extremely successful in reducing drug-related harm and improving health outcomes for those using drugs, their families and the broader community. Despite these successes, however, many harm minimisation programmes face strong community opposition, and many others are limited in their effectiveness by their reluctance to acknowledge the complex ways in which drug using contexts, social relationships, desire, pleasure and aesthetics are involved in the production and reduction of drug-related harm.[NP] Deleuze and Guattari’s ethico-aesthetic philosophy offers a conceptual framework through which to begin to grapple with the sensory and affective elements of illicit drug use and their implications for an embodied ethics. Following an introduction to their key concepts, this thesis explores the implications of their ontology for understandings of injecting drug use across four inter-related dimensions: the drug using body; urban spaces of injecting; public overdose memorials; and drug referenced, ‘heroin chic’ advertising imagery. It argues that aesthetics and ethics are complexly intertwined, and that ethically positive responses to drug use require an active appreciation of the ways in which aesthetics affect bodies and their capacities to form relations with others

Chica(no) lit : reappropriating Adorno’s Washing machine in Nina Marie Martínez’s ¡Caramba!

Uzendoski, Andrew Gregg 30 November 2010 (has links)
This master’s report presents a literary criticism of the novel ¡Caramba! by Nina Marie Martínez that attends to both genre and mass culture theory. The novel, when recognized as a multigenre text consisting of both chick lit and Chicano literature conventions, reveals how informal economies employ methods of cultural appropriation in order to articulate an oppositional voice. In particular, Martinez’s literary intervention of the trademark symbol subverts dominant forms of consumption (and genre) to expose how her protagonists emerge as subjective, discerning consumers in her fictional Californian town. / text

The Rise of Geek Chic: An Analysis of Nerd Identity in a Post-Cult Market

Reynolds, Renee H., Reynolds, Renee H. January 2017 (has links)
This project is an analytical history of the discourse of media panics that have affected comics-like forms in the mid- to late-1800s, comic books in the mid-1900s, and comics media in 1990s and the contemporary moment. The study of these media panics shapes a theory of nerd culture in general and comics culture specifically in order to better understand the delicate and foundational dialectic that sustains a consumer identity that is paradoxical in its indulgence in and animosity towards popular culture. With its historical formation in mind, this project explores the formation of geek chic as a consumer identity that, in many ways, troubles and even threatens the status quo of nerd culture.

Mario Jorge Nunes Costa 00 September 2018 (has links)

No. of bitstreams: 1 Ricardo Antonio de Souza.pdf: 1542597 bytes, checksum: f061f50caaad575d2edaa18c72092440 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2018-09-28 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / In recent years, we have noticed a large increase in the number of families in Brazil, thinking about how to contribute to the improvement of this situation, we decided to develop this research, which seeks to verify if financial mathematics, when developed by mathematical modeling as a teaching and learning strategy, can contribute to the development of students' financial behavior in a higher technology course in logistics and computer science. In the present research, we hypothesize that when financial mathematics is developed using this strategy, there is a positive influence on the understanding of the content worked and, consequently, influences the financial behavior of the subject. In order to validate our hypothesis, we use the modeling processes, which brings the student closer to the real scientific activity, that is, the student becomes a researcher, testing conjectures, formulating hypotheses, proving, constructing models, concepts, theories and socializing the results. According to this strategy, it is up to the teacher to provide favorable situations, so that the student in this effective action on knowledge, transform it into knowledge in this process of scientific search. Recent research shows that students who have already completed the discipline of financial mathematics in an undergraduate course usually do not use or associate the studied content with their financial life, so we try to answer the following research question: The use of mathematical modeling as a strategy for teaching and learning Financial Mathematics, could contribute to the development of Financial Education ?. As well as the following specific questions: What evidence of financial literacy can be identified after a training on Financial Mathematics centered on the modeling approach? What contributions of mathematical modeling can be identified for the construction of financial literacy? To answer them, we created a questionnaire to be applied to students of two technology courses of a public institution of higher education, located in the great ABC - SP. Being the first, technology in logistics and the second in computing. The students of the first course answered the questionnaire after attending a financial mathematics workshop, structured by mathematical modeling. In order to have a comparative parameter of answers, we apply the same questionnaire to students of the second course, but these without participating in the workshop of financial mathematics.

Reporting Live From Edge City: The Dynamic "Statuspheres" of Tom Wolfe's America

January 2014 (has links)
abstract: During the 1960s, American youth were coming of age in a post–war period marked by an unprecedented availability of both money and leisure time. These conditions afforded young people new opportunities for exploring fresh ways of thinking and living, beyond the traditional norms of their parents' generation. Tom Wolfe recognized that a revolution was taking place, in terms of manners and morals, spearheaded by this latest generation. He built a career for himself reporting on the diverse groups that were developing on the periphery of the mainstream society and the various ways they were creating social spaces, what he termed “statuspheres,” for themselves, in which to live by their own terms. Using the techniques of the New Journalism—“immersion” reporting that incorporated literary devices traditionally reserved for writers of fiction—Wolfe crafted creative non–fiction pieces that attempted not only to offer a glimpse into the lives of these fringe groups, but also to place the reader within their subjective experiences. This thesis positions Wolfe as a sort of liminal trickster figure, who is able to bridge the gap between disparate worlds, both physical and figurative. Analyzing several of Wolfe's works from the time period, it works to demonstrate the almost magical way in which Wolfe infiltrates various radical, counterculture and otherwise “fringe” groups, while borrowing freely from elements across lines of literary genre, in order to make his subjects' experiences come alive on the page. This work attempts to shed light on his special ability to occupy multiple spaces and perspectives simultaneously, to offer the reader a multidimensional look into the lives of cultural outsiders and the impact that they had and continue to have on the overarching discussion of the American Experience. Ultimately, this paper argues that by exposing these various outlying facets of American culture to the mainstream readership, Wolfe acts as a catalyst to reincorporate these fringe elements within the larger conversation of what it means to be American, thereby spurring a greater cultural awareness and an expansion of the collective American consciousness. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.A. English 2014
