Ideál rytířského panovníka na příkladu alexandrovské epiky českého středověku / The Ideal of Chivalrous Sovereign. The Case of Czech Medieval Alexandrian Epic

Rajterová, Petra January 2013 (has links)
My final thesis, based on study of primary and secondary sources, is focused on the idea of sovereign around 1300 AD. Old-Czech poem Alexandreida and German version Alexander of Ulrich von Etzenbach are used as primary repository of information. Thesis follows both of them and in their comparison shows, how the idea was formulated. Final thesis deals also with works of historians, literary historians and German studies related to its topic. The goal is not an linguistic analysis but to evaluate the poems as an historiographic source, on which we can study medieval notions of rulers and their role in society. Second main task for this final thesis is to reconstruct niveau of bohemian court surrounding King of Bohemia at the end of 13th century, where the poems were originally written. In the end, thesis describes so called "court culture" in the relation to both of Alexandrian poems and their influence in bohemia society.

Par penitence les cumandet a ferir: a legitimação do combate contra os pagãos na Chanson de Roland e na Chanson de Guillaume / Par les penitence cumandet a ferir: the legitimacy of combat against the pagans in the Song of Roland and in the Song of William.

Gouveia, Lucas Bittencourt 26 April 2010 (has links)
The Song of Roland, explored in the nineteenth century as the main text of French literature, was heavily exploited over the past 150 years, often with political uses, not always expressed. Despite extensive work by literary studies, there hardly any historical research on its Christian content and its possible association with the legitimacy of the combat against the pagans. This work investigates how the pagans are represented in the gestas of the late eleventh century, and how they build an otherness through religion, morality, territoriality, and ethnicity. It also investigates how Christians are represented in a pan-European unity, in a superposition of the notions of empire and Christianity, and how their fight against the heathen is legitimated and even sanctified through the martyrdom of their knights.

The owners of their own worlds: a study of Angelica and the narrator in the Orlando Furioso, of Ludovico Ariosto

Corrêa, Fernanda Zambon Nunes 08 August 2014 (has links)
During Italian Renaissance, in the midst of a war situation and uncertainties, in a courtesan society permeated with apparent relationships motivated by political and personal interests comes Orlando Furioso, a novel of chivalry worked for nearly thirty years for Ludovico Ariosto, literati at the court of Ferrara, who dedicates his poem to Ippolito dEste, his master and patron. Despite being a novel of chivalry, Ariosto leaves marks on it that help us understand a little of the society in which author and work were inserted through mainly reflections of the narrator which arises as historically determined character; this spatiotemporal mixture just granted a parodic character to the text of Ariosto. Before that, our study aims to analyze the ambiguous behavior of narrative voice (that either shows itself omniscient, or compares itself to Carolingian knights errant) and the main female character of the Furioso, Angelica, seeking to relate such behavior to the social environment in which it gives the composition of the work to which the narrator demonstrates belong

The emotional rhetoric of the later Crusades : romance in England after 1291

Elias, John Marcel Robert January 2017 (has links)
This thesis offers an assessment of late medieval public response to the crusades through an investigation of emotional rhetoric in the Middle English crusading romances. It argues that the prevailing climate after the fall of Acre in 1291 and the evacuation of the last Christian strongholds in the Levant was characterized by a mixture of enduring enthusiasm and fascination, but also of concern, anxiety, and self-questioning, engendered by the enterprise's failures. The loss of the Holy Land had enduring repercussions on Christian crusading mindsets, marking a culminating point in Islam's seemingly relentless victories in wars believed to be ordained by God, and the collapse of Christendom's ambitions to secure lasting dominion over Christ's patrimony. The late thirteenth century was also a turning point in the history of insular romance, with the progressive displacement of Anglo Norman by Middle English, expanding the genre's audience. Reworking the emotional depictions of their sources, authors or adaptors of late medieval English crusading romances engaged with, and elicited reflection on, the cultural anxieties of the time: man's relation to God, the workings of divine providence, Christianity's ascendency over Islam, human agency, the connection between morality and fortune, the bearing of motives on actions, and the moral limitations of violence.

“Histórias fingidas” : admiração e maravilhamento no Amadís de Gaula

Alberto, Rodrigo Moraes January 2015 (has links)
Reflection from a previous historical process, the chivalric romances do arise at the end of the Iberian medieval a new literary fashion, blending the mythic-chivalric tradition with social changes that characterize the bustling historical period. These novels are wrapped device boggling's appearances. Stemmed from the need to rethink the wonderful study. This study analyzes the admiration and the Iberian world from the sixteenth century construction of the wonder device.

The chivalric Gawain

Leffert, Carleigh 01 June 2007 (has links)
The principal objective of this paper is to analyze Sir Gawain's efforts to balance the conflicting requirements of the Code of Chivalry with the basic needs of human nature to develop insights into the Gawain's character. Using an amalgamated definition of chivalry as the standard, I will examine Gawain's attempts to achieve his goal of being the perfect chivalric knight, determine the nature of his obstacles, and analyze the development of his character. In trying to live up to perfection, Gawain discovers that he is not perfect.
