Edna Pontellier: una ou múltipla?

Our theory and critical resources are supported by works written by Per Seyersted(1979) and Nadilza Moreira(2003) both references names for Chopin's scholarship.Besides, we used Beauvoir' (1970), Woolf' (2012) and Showalter's(1979) critical studies to help us to develop our understanding of the 19th century social-hisorical women's context in the USA. For the study of representation we used the concept fromAna Gabriela Macedo e Ana Luisa Amaral(2005). To support our analysis on the role of the narrative voice we used Chris Baldick(1991) Our conclusion is that: Edna Pontellier represents a multiplicity of images and they are presented to the reader as the narrative develops itself showing Edna's multiples “awakenings” as a woman in transition. / O foco de nossa pesquisa está voltado para Edna Pontellier, a protagonista da novela, O Despertar; Edna uma dona de casa do século XIX que lutou pela emancipação como sujeito. Nossa fundamentação teórica se apóia nas obras escritas por Per Seyersted (1979) e Nadilza Moreira (2003) ambos nomes de referências nos estudos sobre Chopin. Além disso, usamos Beauvoir '(1970), Woolf’ (2012) e os estudos críticos de Showalter para nos ajudar a desenvolver a compreensão do contexto sócio-histórico das mulheres do século XIX nos EUA. Para o estudo da representação utilizamos os estudos de Ana Gabriela Macedo e Ana Luisa Amaral (2005). Finalmente, para apoiar a nossa análise sobre o papel da voz narrativa na novela nos amparamos nos estudos de Chris Baldick (1991). Concluimos que: a representação da protagonista, Edna Pontellier, não é una, mas múltipla e caminha juntamente com os diversos “despertares” vivenciados pela personagem ao longo da trama narrativa.

A autora norte-americana Kate Chopin (1850-1904) é conhecida por sua vasta produção de contos ambientados no estado de Louisiana, os quais exibem uma representação das peculiaridades locais. Em vários dos contos, Chopin focaliza a cultura Cajun e propõe uma representação ficcional da língua daquela comunidade (língua crioula Cajun) através da fala dos personagens, como ocorre em "No baile acadiano". Dividida em três capítulos, a presente dissertação almeja investigar se a questão da regionalidade, representada por marcas da cultura local e de identidade cultural dos personagens, influencia na permanência de expressões em língua francesa e língua Cajun no processo tradutório do conto At the ‘Cadian Ball para a língua portuguesa: "No baile acadiano". A pesquisa permitiu constatar que houve influência das questões culturais e de regionalidades na tradução do conto, uma vez que o uso da língua transmite informação social, aspecto exemplificado durante a alternância de códigos entre os personagens dependendo do interlocutor. Divided into three chapters, this dissertation aims to investigate whether the issue of regionality, represented by marks of local culture and cultural identity of the characters, influences in the maintenance of expressions in French and Cajun language in the translation process of the short story "At the 'Cadian Ball" into Portuguese: "No baile Acadiano". The research showed that there was influence of cultural issues and regionalities on the translation of the story because the use of language conveys social information, aspect that was exemplified during the code-switching process among characters, depending on the interlocutor. So, it is noticeable that the translator's attitude (Denise Mariné) can be considered as respectful in relation to the author and to linguistic aspects that would be lost if such sentences and/or expressions/phraseologisms were translated into Portuguese.

Cette thèse permet de mettre en lumière divers aspects de l’interprétation pianistique contemporaine. Pour cela, trois concours internationaux ont été choisis – Chopin de Varsovie, Long-Thibaud de Paris et Tchaïkovski de Moscou – de façon à exposer au mieux, à travers des épreuves de ce genre, la situation de l’art pianistique à une échelle mondiale sous des rapports divers : social et historique en relation avec chacune de ces compétitions, technique dans la chaîne compositeur-interprète-auditeur, et artistique sur la base de l’étude des interprétations des finalistes durant la période 1985-2010, sans oublier les enjeux de l’évaluation dans ce cadre.L’analyse générale de la situation actuelle a mis en évidence l’utilité de ces concours dans la vie musicale contemporaine. Si les valeurs esthétiques du monde actuel ne stimulent pas réellement la formation de personnalités d’une grande force et d’une réelle profondeur, un certain nombre de signes positifs semblent toutefois se dégager de ces manifestations. / The scientific work reveals various aspects of contemporary piano performance. Three international piano competitions were chosen – Chopin in Warsaw, Long-Thibaud in Paris and Tchaikovsky in Moscow – because it is through events like these ones that is exposed to its best the situation of pianistic art on a global scale. Given the complexity of our questions, we have shared our research in several areas: social and historical related to each analyzed musical competition, technical according to the chain composer-performer-listener, and artistic based on the study of interpretations of the finalists during the period 1985-2010, preceded by issues evaluation in this context.The general analysis of the current situation has highlighted the need of these competitions in contemporary musical life. If the aesthetic values of the modern world do not actually stimulate the formation of deep and strong personalities, a number of positive signs, however, seem to emerge from these events.

Cette thèse s’intéresse à une période stylistique particulière du compositeur Frédéric Chopin. Les années 1840 manifestent une évolution importante dans son langage musical et correspondent à un tournant esthétique marqué par un contexte historique et biographique difficile. Tout au long de ce travail, nous allons tenter d’ériger une définition transversale du « dernier style » de Chopin, en recherchant les éléments caractéristiques récurrents de cette période. Dans ce but, un corpus de vingt-deux œuvres musicales sera analysé selon plusieurs niveaux (traditionnel et formel, sémiotique, narratif et thymique) afin de saisir tous les enjeux de la dernière période du compositeur polonais. / This thesis focuses on a particular stylistic period of Frederic Chopin. The 1840s show an important evolution of Chopin’s musical language and correspond to an aesthetic turning point, characterized by a difficult historical and biographical context. All along our research, we will try to build a transversal definition of Chopin’s last style by highlighting the recurrent characteristics of this period. In this purpose, a corpus of twenty-two works will be analyzed through several levels (traditional and formal, semiotic, narrative and thymic), to grasp all the issues of the last period of the polish composer.

In the 19th century, ¡§Character Piece¡¨ became a new trend in piano composition. Without using large-scale formal structure, it illustrates successfully the individualities of emotional expression in music among different composers. ¡§Barcarolle¡¨¡Xfeaturing special rhythmic patterns¡Xrepresents unique elegancy and lyricism in this category. The historical development of ¡§Character Piece¡¨ in the 19th century leads as an introduction in this thesis, followed by the compositional characteristics of ¡§Barcarolle¡¨ in the second chapter. The major part of this topic focuses on ¡§Barcarolles¡¨ written by four dominant composers in the 19th Cencury: F. Mendelssohn, F. Chopin, G. Faure and S. Rachmaninoff. This dissertation examines the relationship between women and economics in American Progressive Era through the discussion of selected works by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Kate Chopin, and Edith Wharton. The authors and texts included in the study together demonstrate how women responded to the economic development and the concept of the separate spheres at the-turn-into-the-twentieth-century America. Based on Thorstein Veblen¡¦s socio-psychological theory of the leisure class and the institutional economics and Gilman¡¦s analysis on the sexual-economic relationship in marriage, my discussion aims to investigate the interconnection between human relationships, women¡¦s economic values, and economic exchanges in business, focusing on the methods the three women writers employ to re/present how middle/upper-class women redefine womanhood and construct female subjectivity in an economic system that favors men. In my introductory chapter, I explain the historical background of the period, general concepts in Veblen¡¦s economic theory, and the motivation, methodology, and organization of the dissertation. Chapter Two, ¡§Veblenian Workmanship and Gilman¡¦s Woman-Made Land,¡¨ purports to cross-examine Gilman¡¦s Women and Economics and her utopian fiction Herland, aiming to show Gilman¡¦s optimistic view on women¡¦s emancipation from the private to the public. In Chapter Three, ¡§Barbarian Status of Women and Chopin¡¦s Feminism,¡¨ I discuss by Chopin¡¦s The Awakening the tension between women¡¦s growing sense of an autonomous self and men¡¦s adherence to the institutionalized habits of thought. My fourth chapter, ¡§Conspicuous Consumption and Society Women in Edith Wharton,¡¨ is a study on the relationship between the display culture in the consumer society and woman¡¦s role as the non-productive consumer in Edith Wharton¡¦s The House of Mirth and The Custom of the Country. The concluding chapter, along with general comparisons of the heroines, outlines major arguments in the whole thesis.
