Technology challenges faced by rural women in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa: a case study in the Chris Hani MunicipalityChisango, Grasia 06 1900 (has links)
The study sought to explore technology challenges faced by some rural women in Intsika-Yethu and Emalahleni local municipalities, under the Chris Hani District Municipality, in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. Available literature reveals that some rural women in South Africa and other developing parts of the world face technology challenges. The study is qualitative and focuses on two municipalities. Thirty-two women participated in the study. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and focus group interviews. Data were presented, analysed and discussed according to the themes derived from the sub-research questions. It emerged from the study that while most women in both municipalities were aware of ICT, they are however facing ICT access challenges in most areas of the municipalities. The findings do not depict the South African government national ICT policy goals which realises the importance of technology in the integration of services for the development of rural areas. Designing intervention programs for secondary school girls and some rural women, as well as monitoring and evaluating ICT programs in rural areas are recommended. / Communication Science / MA ( Communication)

Previous issue date: 2012-06-13 / The main objective of this research is to trace a line of reasoning since the time of
the first machines to reproduce the illusion of movement, through the film until the
1960s where did my object of study: the French short film, fiction, La Jetée. From
then on it was a brief technical analysis on the a esthetic film that Chris Marker (the
author of the film) used in his narrative. Not leaving out a list of photofilmes produced
in Brazil for a better contextualization of this type of animation pictures today. Finally,
we elaborate on the practice, a movie production, using the same format as that
quoted above short film: photographs. This visual narrative, the genre of fiction, has a
structure in its cinematic language.

Three professional mixing engineers and their workflow : How do you learn to mix on a professional level?Gustavsson, Jacob January 2020 (has links)

A study to explore the impact of socio-demographic factors on the response to antiretroviral therapy in Gauteng Department of HealthMajuru, Hellen 04 November 2008 (has links)
Objectives
The study aims to describe the socio-demographic characteristics, clinical outcomes of the patients in the Gauteng public sector roll-out programme and establish the association between these. There are contradictory results from international studies on these associations, in the absence of SA results.
Methods
This is a retrospective cohort, exploratory, secondary data, record review study and a comparison between two sites. Routinely collected socio-demographic data and clinical data were used to establish the impact of socio-demographic factors on response to HAART. This was collected for patients who enrolled from April 2004 to August 2004. Chris Hani Baragwanaath (CHB) had 494 records, Helen Joseph (HJ) had159 records collected. Exposure variables (age, sex, marital status, education level, residential area, employment, baseline viral load and baseline cd4 count). Outcome variables were (CD4 and Viral load at 3 months, 6 months and 12 months).
Data Analysis
T tests were used for comparing means; logistic regression was used to find the effect of ordered exposure variables and binary outcome. Chi square and fishers exact were used to find frequencies and association between the categorical variables. Regression was used to find the association between the continuous exposure variables and the continuous outcome variables. In a multivariate model, to assess the effect of the exposure variables to the outcome variables Multivariate regression was used.
Statistical significance was assessed at the 5% significance level, giving 95% confidence interval.
Results
The majority of the patients (653) were female, African, unemployed and were literate.
At CHB, at the end of the first year, three quarters were still on treatment however; just under a fifth (19%) had died. The majority responded well to treatment and had a mean baseline CD4 count of 58.9cells/mm3 (CHB) and 78.4cells/mm3 (HJ) and mean CD4 count of 245 (CHB) and 268 (HJ) after 12 months. increasing age, and being widowed, lowers the immunological response. Employment, education, sex and had no impact on response.
Conclusion
• There is positive virological and immunological response to HAART in Gauteng ARV roll-out programme despite the low socio economic status of the majority of the patients.
• Provision of free antiretroviral drugs and access to the disability grant has assisted in mitigating the effects of HIV/ AIDS on the socio-economically disadvantaged.
• The elderly and the widowed might need close monitoring as their response appears to be lower than the others.
• The group with no schooling is not well represented in this sample; the question is whether the HIV/AIDS prevention messages and treatment is accessible for this group. This needs further research.

Ethical, Legal and Social/Societal Implications (ELSI) of Recall-by-Genotype (RbG) approaches in the Cooperative Health Research in South Tyrol (CHRIS) study on genetic risk factors of Parkinson’s disease (PD)Tschigg, Katharina 21 December 2023 (has links)
Recall-by-genotype (RbG) strategies are bottom-up approaches to conducting targeted follow-up studies or substudies with eligible participants. They use specific genetic information derived from pre-vious genome-wide association studies or whole-genome sequenc-ing enabled by next-generation sequencing. Genetic information may be partially disclosed when certain partici-pants are recalled for RbG studies, and information on the study design and eligibility criteria is provided. These distinguishing pecu-liarities of RbG approaches have ethical, legal, and social/societal implications (ELSI). In this thesis, we present and discuss the results of research on the ELSI aspects of RbG approaches and within the Cooperative Health Research in South Tyrol (CHRIS) studies (RbG1, RbG2) on genetic risk factors of Parkinson's disease (PD). We used various qualitative and quantitative methods, including in-terviews, surveys and focus group discussions (FGD). Thereby, we sought to address the need for qualitative data from diverse stake-holders, including critical voices in the CHRIS research ecosystem, such as participants, researchers, ethics board members, and study assistants, to develop effective recall and communication strategies through a collaborative approach refining the CHRIS RbG policy. The exploration began with a literature review revealing the explicit and implicit ELSI of RbG study designs. It uncovered a consensus on the significant ethical challenges RbG poses while highlighting the diversity in consent models and Return of Research Results (RoRR) policies employed in different research and biobanking con-texts. Then, a secondary analysis of interviews and surveys from a mixed-methods study with CHRIS RbG participants from the RbG pilot study (RbG1) followed. Alongside the second follow-up RbG study (RbG2) study, we then designed a survey, informed by the results of RbG1, to gather further perspectives on their experience of an RbG study, and other fundamental considerations pertinent to en-gagement and communication in RbG studies. Then, to explore the operational and practical aspects of RbG studies, we identified the relevant stakeholders who shape and decide on RbG study designs. Consequently, we designed and conducted FGD to examine stake-holder perspectives on the RbG study design, communication, and disclosure strategies. Further, we collected feedback and views from CHRIS study personnel and coordinators who accompanied the RbG1 and 2 study process. Finally, we conducted a large-scale sur-vey with CHRIS participants to strengthen the conclusions of previ-ous empirical research. This collaborative approach aims to refine the CHRIS RbG policy, develop effective recruitment and commu-nication strategies, and promote transparency. The study's findings underscore the value of personalised engage-ment and sensitive communication through tailored disclosure and communication strategies. Stakeholder views on ELSI in RbG stud-ies reveal diversity, highlighting the need for adaptable approaches aligned with study contexts. Overall, the results suggest that partici-pants are highly interested in receiving information on carrier status on the genetic variations investigated by the RbG study, but views and motivations were heterogeneous. This adds to the complexity of integrating these insights into communication strategies and disclo-sure policies. More research is necessary to investigate the effects of various disclosure strategies, the impact of disclosure on awareness, and how framing affects participants' reception of study-specific information.
