Forme romanesque et contestation de l’histoire dans La fille de Christophe Colomb de Réjean DucharmeHobbs, Sandra Claire 05 1900 (has links)
La Fille de Christophe Colomb (Paris: Gallirnard, 1969) is a novel written by
Rejean Ducharme in rhyming verse resembling an epic poem In this thesis, it will be
shown that the form of the novel serves to emphasize the contestation of History evident
in the novel's content. While this novel is certainly unusual in Ducharme's work it fits into
the ambiant literary discourse of Quebec in the 1960's, where the theories of
decolonisation influenced writers and critics alike. In particular, History was seen to be
imposed on Quebec from the outside; Quebec must necessarily reject this History and
begin to make its own. This underlying assumption for the analysis proposed in this thesis
will be demonstrated in Chapter One through reflections by Ducharme's contemporaries,
existing criticism of La Fille de' Christophe Colomb, and by current theories of
postcolonial writing. In Chapter Two, the epic form of the novel will be studied in detail.
On the surface, the author appears to respect the "rules" of the genre, but a close reading
of the text will show that this respect is only superficial, and that the rules are subverted to
create tension between literary norms and Ducharme's writing. It is the narrative structure
of the novel, however, that proves to be the most subversive deviation from the norms of
the epic poem: although the majority of the novel is narrated in the third person, a
substantial fragmentation of the narrative voice occurs which will be demonstrated in
Chapter Three. The net impact of this fragmentation is to produce a conflict between the
codes of the epic poem and the novel. At the end of the analysis of the relationship
between literary form and contestation of History in La Fille de Christophe Colomb, it
will be shown that the form, as an element separate from the content, conveys a
problematic relationship between this text and History. The novel contributes to the
contestation of History as practised in the literature of Quebec in the 1960's by subverting
the literary code, thereby linking literary history to History as colonizing factors that are
questioned in this novel. / Arts, Faculty of / French, Hispanic, and Italian Studies, Department of / Graduate

Approches textométriques de la notion de style du traducteur : Analyses d'un corpus parallèle Français-Chinois : Jean-Christophe de Romain Rolland et ses trois traductions chinoises / Textometric Approaches to the Notion of Translator's Style : Analysis of a French-Chinese parallel corpus : Romain Rolland's Jean-Christophe and its three Chinese translationsMiao, Jun 20 April 2012 (has links)
We tried to explore the notion of translator's style combining the analysis of translationstudies and the multilingual textometric methods (quantitatifs textual methods applied in thecorpora of aligned texts). Our corpus research is composed of three Chinese translations of one original text in French, namely Jean-Christophe by Romain Rolland (1904-1917), translated by Fu Lei (1952-1953), Han Hulin (2000) and Xu Yuanchong (2000), respectively. After describing the difficulties in building the French-Chinese parallel corpus, we conducted successively various textometric measures on the corpus in order to highlight the specificlexical and syntactic uses of each translator. The re-contextualization in the paral corpus of thestatistical differences of linguistic phenomena between translations and the consideration of socio-cultural factors at each time reveal the indicators of each translator's style. The detailed research on Chinese particles in translations studies, based on textometric comparisons, provides rich results revealing each translator's specific approaches in his work. The results garnered from the comparison of three Chinese translations of the same text between them, then with the French original text lay the groudwork for our proposition of the analyticalmodel on translator's style. We think that our present work offers a methodology for ascientific and systematic exploration to the notion of translator's style within the translationstudies.

Mimicry, Multiple Voices and the Construction of Cultural Identity in Derek Walcott's The Haitian TrilogyChang, Shu-ting 21 August 2008 (has links)
This thesis aims to interpret the construction of cultural identity of the Caribbean islands in Derek Walcott¡¦s The Haitian Trilogy: Henri Christophe, Drums and Colours, and The Haitian Earth. To rely on the postcolonial and cultural critics¡¦ study on mimicry, multiple voices and identity construction, I take the construction of cultural identity as a transitional process to fabricate a way to identify with the land that people live on. The colonial background and the postcolonial exploration in the Caribbean islands combined with its diverse racial components, the Caribbeans always experience the predicament in identity construction. Derek Walcott composes his writings from this complex environment and represents the identity formation through continuing observation and exploration. In Introduction, the historical context and the literary development in the Caribbean islands introduce the theme of history and cultural as the common consideration of Caribbean writers; therefore, among their writings, the construction of cultural identity situates a significant position in their writings. The Haitian Revolution plays a significant role in the cultural identity formation in the Caribbean literary writings, since it is the turning point to lead this area from colonization to postcolonial situation, and it inspires writers to review the historical incident and to rewrite the history that they, at this time, write by themselves. Derek Walcott¡¦s The Haitian Trilogy comes not from a planned writing sequel, but from spontaneously reiterative consideration of the Haitian Revolution as a means to write the history of one¡¦s own land and to construct the cultural identity from the self-articulation. Chapter Two¡XHenri Christophe examines the means of mimicry to loosen the colonial control over the colonized and furthermore subvert the colonial power. Chapter Three¡XDrums and Colours portrays the colonial and postcolonial subject relation by way of writing the colonial history and juxtaposing multiple voices of the different classes of characters. Chapter Four¡XThe Haitian Earth aims to demonstrate the struggle to free from the colonization in order to construct the cultural identity from the identification with the land rather than with the remorse of the suffering past. The conclusion collocates the above discussion about the trilogy for the transitional process of the cultural identity formation and illuminates Walcott¡¦s position on the construction of the cultural identity in the Caribbean islands and other similar areas.

Representation d'une " neo-humanite " chez Maurice Dantec, Michel Houellebecq et Jean-Christophe RufinJanuary 2012 (has links)
In this dissertation, we first propose to look at science-fiction as literary genre and consider the forefathers of Francophone science-fiction, determine the role of the twenty-first century writer and the role of literature in our society and future society. Secondly, we attempt a detailed textual analysis of selected works by authors Maurice Dantec, Michel Houellebecq and Jean-Christophe Rufin. Our focus lies primarily on the importance of language, its potential decline and how humans can still hope to redeem their lives with the medium of art. Finally, we consider the concepts of post-humanity, "end of humanity" and "end of history" in order to help establish criteria for a neo-humanity as described by the aforementioned novelists.

Paulina Bonaparte como sinécdoque de Europa en la novela El reino de este mundo / Pauline Bonaparte as a synecdoche for Europe in the novel The kingdom of this world (English)Lilak, Zeinat January 2016 (has links)

"Your Majesty's Friend": Foreign Alliances in the Reign of Henri ChristopheConerly, Jennifer Yvonne 18 May 2013 (has links)
In modern historiography, Henri Christophe, king of northern Haiti from 1816-1820, is generally given a negative persona due to his controlling nature and his absolutist regime, but in his correspondence, he engages in diplomatic collaborations with two British abolitionists, William Wilberforce and Thomas Clarkson, in order to improve his new policies and obtain international recognition. This paper argues that the Haitian king and the abolitionists engaged in a mutual collaboration in which each party benefitted from the correspondence. Christophe used the advice of the British abolitionists in order to increase the power of Haiti into a powerful black state, and Wilberforce and Clarkson helped the king position Haiti as a self-sufficient nation to fuel their abolitionist argument of the potential of post-emancipation societies.
